Parole Movie Review: An engrossing tale of sibling rivalry

North Madras has been a favourite backdrop for Tamil filmmakers when it comes to narrating gritty, raw crime stories. Debutant Dwarakh Raja also picks this familiar setting to present a tale of two brothers set amidst bloodshed and gruesome murders. The two central characters in this film are named after historical figures — Karikalan (Linga) and Kovalan (RS Karthik). It is the rivalry between these two brothers that form the film's crux.

Sibling rivalry because of a parent being over-affectionate towards one of the children is a tried-and-tested template in our cinema. Parole follows this same idea, but it's also a crime thriller and briefly, an interesting courtroom drama. The film begins with the death of Aarayi (Janaki Suresh), who was living with her younger son Kovalan while the elder one, Karikalan, is serving a double life imprisonment. Kovalan, who hates his brother, plans to cremate his mother without informing Karikalan. However, circumstances force him to apply for his brother's parole. But wait... the parole is just a sham as both of them have bigger plans to execute.

Parole follows a non-linear narrative, which might seem disjointed in the beginning, but that's how flashes of memories are supposed to be. There is even a dialogue in the film to justify this creative choice —  nyabagam endrathu cinema-la vara maari ner koda varaadhu.  What would have otherwise been a generic story of a dysfunctional family and their internal dynamics, is made intriguing by narrating it through multiple chapters that are rich in drama. The structuring of these scenes is fascinating with a frequent dose of unexpected moments.

Parole gets to its best during the compelling courtroom scenes. Vinodhini Vaidyanathan's realistic performance and TSR as the no-nonsensical judge make these scenes effective. It is probably the first time in Tamil cinema that the legal procedures that are followed in a parole hearing are shown in such great detail, and it is such novel moments make the film somewhat unique. Despite the complex screenplay in Parole , the proceedings are largely comprehensible courtesy of some smart editing, which occasionally borders on spoon-feeding too. Raj Kumar Amal's music is also apt, particularly the rousing score during the build-up scenes for Karikalan.

The two lead actors, Linga and RS Karthik, hold the film together with their solid performances. Though both Karikalan and Kovalan are equally important characters, it is the former who gets a more well-defined arc. During his early days in the juvenile home, he becomes a victim of sexual abuse, which has a harrowing effect throughout his life. It is appreciable that the makers chose to address such uncommon topics, but wish they handled it with more sensitivity. The film has an abundance of graphic visuals, ranging from sexual violence to gratuitous physical violence. It only reiterates the wrong notion that for a film to be raw and gritty, it should have such gory, uncomfortable visuals.

The posters of Parole were called out for copying the Stranger Things font. Incidentally, the film also has plenty of strange things in it. Both Karikalan and Kovalan have romantic interests in the film and there is absolutely no reason why the girls would be interested in these unruly men. It also has one of the strangest proposal scenes of all time — a bunch of goons is about to stab Karikalan when a girl, out of nowhere, screams 'I Love You'. It distracts the goons and helps Karikalan escape from them. He then confronts the girl, who he is seeing for the first time. What's even more strange is that the scene ends with them falling in love and kissing each other.

Parole suffers heavily from a hasty ending. The redemption angle towards the end is rushed and unconvincing. It would have worked better with a bit more clarity in writing. There are still some memorable moments like Karikalan's explanation of why he wants to escape jail. The reason is simple — for fan kaathu.  It might sound lame, but it's a big deal for someone who is about to be robbed off the comfort of a fan's breeze for the next 28 years. It is such simple but meaningful moments that make Parole  an appreciable attempt from Dwarakh Raja and his young team.

Parole movie review: Mammootty is the saving grace of this melodramatic film

Malayalam superstar Mammootty plays a hardcore communist in his new film Parole, which is the directorial debut of ad filmmaker Sharrath Sandith. Apparently inspired by a true story, the film follows Comrade Alex’s (Mammootty) life. Sharrath has employed a simple narrative structure for Parole. He begins the story in a high-security jail, where Alex is the most loved inmate. His co-inmates adore him, and he’s a sweetheart for the prison officials.

At one point, when Alex’s parole application gets suspended, a gloomy mood envelopes the entire prison compound. And one top cop says something like it was the most emotionally difficult situation he had to face in his entire service. The character that works at a prison, which is a culminating point for all the crimes and tragedies of life, wants us to believe when he says a convict getting his parole suspended is the biggest tragedy of all. That’s the problem with Sharrath’s film, he tries to spoon feed the audience on how to feel about the incidents and characters that we see on the screen. And he aspires to achieve it with his lousy writing.

Alex begins to tell his life’s story upon being asked by a curious inmate lodged next to his cell. A teenage Alex is introduced to the ideology of communism by his father played by Alencier Ley Lopez. He grows up on teachings of P Krishna Pillai, the revolutionary who was the founder of the Communist movement in Kerala. It is Alex’s father who begins the Communist movement in a small town in Kottayam, where the rich decided the value of goods produced by the farmers. Alex continues to spearhead the movement even after his father’s death. Alex has a stepsister Kathreena (Miya), who is dissed by other members of the family for obvious reasons. However, Alex loves her more than his own life.

Alex allows Varghese, a member of the Indian Army (Suraj Venjaramoodu), to marry Kathreena. Varghese turns out to be a scoundrel later. He gets court-martialed for peddling drugs. And when he returns to Alex and Kathreena’s life, he slowly begins to destroy them.

Alex blinded by the love for his sister loses his property and family and ends up in jail too. It’s interval and we are back to the prison. From there on the film follows Alex’s life into the future, where another series of unfortunate incidents await him.

The narration and Mammootty’s performance is better in the second half. Mammootty’s performance as Alex, a defeated middle-age person who is resigned to his fate, comes as a saving grace. He has staged a subtle performance in scenes where he’s longing to meet his son or the scenes where he swallows the insults hurled at him, gets our attention for a while. Alex is powerful when it comes to helping people in distress, but he becomes powerless and helpless when it’s time to provide for his family.

Mammootty’s efforts to save the film soon vanishes into a thin air due to Sharrath’s cluelessness about what to do with a stellar star cast, including Iniya, who has essayed the role of Alex’s wife Annie.

While we can spot lazy writing in every scene, the film’s cinematography by Loganathan Srinivasan is noteworthy. Each frame looks like a painting, especially the scenes set in the backdrop of scenic mountains of Kerala. Loganathan’s work is only among a few good things in the film, apart from Mammootty.

Sharrath has been consistent in maintaining a melancholy mood throughout the film. But, it leaves us wondering what was the need of Prabhakar’s bad prisoner act? How did Kathreena die? Or why do all prisoners in this film look so happy like they are on a vacation?

Sharrath makes life at the prison look as if it is not bad after all.

Linga goes to juvenile jail at an early age and is treated inappropriately by the inmates. Enraged by this, he brutally murders them.

He is released after six years following the efforts made by his mother Janaki Suresh.

Linga’s younger brother K S Karthik thinks that his mother is partial towards him.

Linga becomes a paid killer gets caught by police and is given double life imprisonment.

Janakai tries to release his son by giving mercy petition to Governor.

But she passes away before that. Karthik tries to bring Linga out on parole to perform their mother’s funeral rites.

What happens next forms the crux of the story.

The way in which director Dwarakh Raja has narrated the story is very impressive. The plot which the director has took is new and has delivered it in a convincing manner.

Linga and Karthik fit their respective roles aptly and have delivered one of their best performances till date.

They have conveyed through emotions about the wrong decisions people make the impact they have.

Janaki Suresh gets a heavy character and is the backbone of the movie.

Vinodhini as the advocate as usual delivers a neat performance.

Kalpika Ganesh and Monisha Murali are okay with their performances.

Special mention should be made about Mahesh’s camerawork. Rajkumar Amal’s music is adequate.

Synopsis/Plot : Kovalan and Karikalan are brothers, Karikalan is in jail for the crimes he has committed however during his prison period their mother passes away. Whether Karikalan came out of jail in Parole for the last rites, did the divided brothers come together forms the crux of the story. It is told as an action-crime drama which is rooted in a cut-throat atmosphere. Parole also has a lot of characters who are primarily outlaws.

Solid flick, a complete surprise.

Though it could have been made as a more simpler and crisper flick, a tight narrative that focuses on the story with a striking screenplay puts on a worthy show. Raw, dark and quirky, yet manages to excite with many mighty moments. (more)

Unconventional narration and layered plot make Parole an interesting watch

Rajkumar Amal's background score and Magesh Thirunavukarasu's cinematography really help in elevating certain emotions. Parole is not a great film, but definitely a very good attempt that deserves an applause for its power-packed writing. (more)

In fact, sports action films have been making good money in India. It is even breaking records and making fresh records after surpassing its entire budget with the opening day collection of the re-release.

Surpasses Lal Salaam In The UK

The film is being watched by fans all over the world, and it has surpassed the collection of many fresh releases, including Rajinikanth ‘s Lal Salaam in the UK. After a massive opening of 55 lakh , it has collected around 1.05 crore from the territory, surpassing Lal Salaam and taking the number 3 spot.

Highest Grossing Re-release In India?

Reports suggest that the film might have turned into the highest-grossing re-release at the Indian box office. It has already surpassed the box office numbers of Sholay 3D (11 crore) and Titanic re-releases in India. It is just a matter of time before it gets the official tag for the highest-grossing re-release!

Ghilli’s Other Achievements

The film might cross the 3 crore gross collection estimate on Sunday, April 28, as per the early trends. Meanwhile, it has already surpassed the 1 crore mark in Karnataka. Waiting for the official breakdown to declare the re-release a blockbuster!
