Creative Writing Certificate Requirements

• The Certificate in Creative Writing is a 4-course, 4 c.u.* credit program of study taught by University of Pennsylvania faculty.
• To earn a certificate, students complete any four courses offered, in any order. 
• Students who complete the basic certificate may pursue an advanced certificate (6-course, 6 c.u.*) by adding two additional creative writing courses.

Stanford Creative Writing Program

The Stanford Creative Writing Program , founded in 1946 by Wallace Stegner, has become one

of the nation’s most distinguished creative writing institutions. After almost 80 years, the

program continues to evolve while also respecting its original vision of recruiting and supporting

talented writers, offering exceptional creative writing instruction and mentorship, and inspiring

undergraduates to develop their own unique creative written expression.

In the 1940s, E. H. Jones generously created the Wallace Stegner Fellowship, now considered

the most prestigious creative writing fellowship in the U.S. for emerging writers. Dr. Jones also

made possible the Jones Lectureships, which are limited, fixed-year teaching appointments,

allowing exceptional Stegner Fellows some time and support to prepare a manuscript for

publication, hone their teaching skills, and transition to a longer-term teaching career elsewhere.

The original framework of term-limited appointments allowed for a consistent flow of selected

Stegner Fellows into the Jones Lectureship. However, over time this framework of term-limited

appointments was not followed.

In the past two years, the School of Humanities and Sciences leadership and the Creative

Writing Academic Council faculty have been working to formulate necessary changes in the

program and to identify additional resources to meet its growing needs. A Working Group of

Creative Writing Academic Council faculty held listening sessions and discussions.

Now, after thoughtful deliberation, the Working Group has recommended restoring the original

intent of the Jones Lectureships: one-year appointments with the possibility of renewal for a

limited term. This change will again allow Stegner Fellows the opportunity to apply to be Jones

Lecturers once they have completed their fellowships.

The university, school, and numerous generous donors are committed to not only the excellence

of the program but also its growth. This means increasing the number of Creative Writing

Develop creative writing skills in multiple genres of interest including fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and more. This customizable program culminates in a capstone project in which students make significant progress on a polished collection of work. This certificate can be completed online or in the classroom.

The Certificate in Creative Writing is fully customizable. You may follow a Writers’ Program sample curriculum plan based on specific writing goals, or design your own program of study.

Courses in this program are open enrollment, and each course is paid for individually.

Sequential courses should be taken in numerical order, starting from the lowest course number and progressing to higher numbers.

You may take Creative Writing courses without committing to the entire program.* However, by establishing candidacy in the program, you will receive  many benefits exclusive to our certificate students such as priority placement on waitlists and access to the UCLA Career Center's job board. Creative Writing Certificate students can also receive a customized curriculum tailored to your writing goals.

Students who complete the Certificate in Creative Writing can receive Advanced Standing in Antioch University Los Angeles’s MFA in Creative Writing .

Advanced Standing allows a student to enter the MFA program with the equivalent of one semester completed. In addition, you may be eligible for Antioch’s fellowships and scholarships.

Creative Writing Degrees  Degrees Also known as an undergraduate or bachelors degree. Internationally respected, universally understood. An essential requirement for many high-level jobs. Gain a thorough understanding of your subject – and the tools to investigate, think critically, form reasoned arguments, solve problems and communicate effectively in new contexts. Progress to higher level study, such as a postgraduate diploma or masters degree.

• Credits measure the student workload required for the successful completion of a module or qualification.
• One credit represents about 10 hours of study over the duration of the course.
• You are awarded credits after you have successfully completed a module.

Beginning Writer's Workshop

If you have a story that needs to be written, an online writing workshop is a great place to start. This course will help improve your writing skills and discover new ways to stretch your creative muscles.

Requirements

Some of the best works of fiction and nonfiction were crafted in a writer's workshop. This online course will help you write your own creative piece. Like a true writing workshop, you will learn literary techniques, peer review a classmate's work, and receive constructive criticism on your work.

In addition, you will learn how to move your work from the prewriting stage to editing and final revision. You will also learn how to use literary devices, meaningful dialogue, and imagery in your different drafts. By the end of this online workshop, you will have a thoroughly developed creative writing piece. You might even be ready for publication!

Lesson 1 - Preparing to Write

Lesson 2 - brainstorming, lesson 3 - literary devices, lesson 4 - genres, lesson 5 - peer review/workshop, lesson 6 - story, plot, and narrative, lesson 7 - characters and dialogue, lesson 8 - points of view and tense, lesson 9 - descriptive writing, lesson 10 - overcoming writer's block, lesson 11 - editing vs. revision, lesson 12 - getting published.

There are no prerequisites to take this course.

• PC: Windows 8 or later.
