Gazette Bengal, 1970 | In India, a British Englishman named James Augustus Hicky started a newspaper in Bengal. The year was 1780 and the paper was called Gazette Bengal. It was followed by the printing of many other newspapers such as the Madras Gazette, Calcutta Gazette and Bombay Herald.

Pre- Independence | During the pre-independence period, many newspapers were published secretly. They played a prominent role in sharing the news and activities of Indian leaders. Various articles and poems were published which ignited the spark of independence in the minds of the common man.

Bruce Drysdale 5th-grade student advances to national finals in DAR's essay contest

Bruce Drysdale fifth grader Lia Martinonis has advanced to the national finals in the Daughters of the American Revolution 2024 Essay Contest, and each time her essay has advanced, her family has celebrated with a cake.

She is anxiously hoping for more cake. Martinonis is one of eight fifth-grade finalists in the nation, and so far, she's won three awards for her essay — one at the local level, one at the state level and the latest for the Southeastern Division.

"I am unbelievably proud. I have felt both shocked and pleased each time I learned that I had won," she said.

And there's prize money involved: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. The winners will be recognized at the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Continental Congress, which is being held June 26-30 in Washington, D.C.

The topic for the contest was “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Essay writers were asked to imagine they were a newspaper reporter for The Philadelphia Times on May 14, 1897, and the newspaper's editor asked them to attend and report on the first public performance of John Philip Sousa’s new march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The students were to tell about Sousa’s life and the story behind the song.

Lia was with her family on April 20 in Durham to receive the state award, her mother, Andrea, said.

"This essay contest has been an incredible experience for Lia. My daughter aspires to be a writer when she grows up," Andrea Martinonis said. "This opportunity has given her the confidence to pursue that dream. Lia researched the essay subject, learned about American history, honed her writing skills, and read her speech to a large audience at the initial award ceremony.

"As an educator, I couldn't be more pleased that DAR sponsors this contest, encouraging students to write essays and learn about our nation's past. As a parent, I am thrilled that my daughter chooses to spend her free time reading and writing and that her interests and skills are being recognized."

Lia said her teacher, April Summey, assigned the essay contest to her class.

"I remember being frustrated when drafting my essay, but now I am so glad my hard work paid off. I still cannot believe this is all happening," Lia Martinonis said.

This part of her essay describes Sousa talking about composing his new march:

"...Sousa said that he composed the song in his head on his return to America as he grieved the death of his beloved band manager, David Blakely. Sousa said, “In a kind of dreamy way, I used to think over old days at Washington when I was leader of the Marine Band…when we played at all public functions, and I could see the Stars and Stripes flying from the flagstaff.” He also stated, “And that flag of ours became glorified… And to my imagination it seemed to be the biggest, grandest flag in the world, and I could not get back under it quick enough.”

Summey called Lia a phenomenal, gifted student who "always goes above and beyond."

"She thrives on a challenge and is an avid learner. Her contagious curiosity shines brightly as she lights up upon acquiring new knowledge," Summey said. "Every year, my fifth grade students work on the DAR essay. They are given a prompt and required to read multiple primary and secondary sources about the topic in order to prepare. I am very passionate about the contest, because it helps students learn history and get excited about it."

We'll not allow police in schools during Grade 6,9 CBC assessments – PS Belio

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has said no police officer will be allowed in schools when learners sit for their Grade 6 and 9 assessments.

Belio said police officers will only collect and deliver the examination papers.

"Police officers will not be allowed in examination centres during CBC assessments for Grades 6 and 9," the PS said.

The PS spoke on Thursday when he attended the inaugural Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment.

He said as Grade 6 learners sit for KPSEA summative test, they usually have 60 per cent of their marks from KPSEA formative tests done in Grades 4 and 5.

"The 60 per cent was between the learner and the teacher. So why should we be so worried that we must get somebody else to support us in that assessment?" he posed.

"As we move forward from Grade 6 we shall allow the teacher to take the lead in their progress and work."

He said the teachers have already been administering assessments to learners from Grade 4 accumulatively.

"It is a continuation of the school-based assessment so the people who have been engaged in that assessment have only been the teacher and the pupil. So we shall leave the teacher and the learner to continue what they have been doing," he said.

"At Grade 12, because of the stake we still place there we shall continue having police officers, but in assessments, we shall run away from that."

Belio said it is important to allow the learners to be children and freely act as so.

Further, Belio noted that the ministry will avail 16,000 new classrooms to accommodate the first cohort of Grade 9 learners in 2025.

Belio said the classes will be ready by January 2025 when schools will enrol Grade 9 learners.

“By the time our schools open in January we shall have availed 16,000 classrooms to accommodate Grade 9 learners. As government this is a responsibility we shall ensure is done,” Belio said.

The PS said it is key to have learners in a conducive environment.

Additionally, he said the government is committed to availing human resources to ensure quality learning.

“As we go into the next financial year we shall be recruiting 20,000 teachers which will go a long way in supporting us in implementing junior school curriculum,” Belio said.

AUSTIN — Arrests were continuing into early Wednesday evening at the University of Texas after hundreds of students walked out of class to protest the war in Gaza and demand that the university system divest from companies that manufacture machinery used in war.

Dozens of state troopers and police officers in riot gear — many carrying zip ties and pepper spray — were on the Austin campus shortly after the pro-Palestine protest began around midday.

The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a statement saying that as of 9 p.m., 34 individuals had been arrested at the state’s flagship public university. However, later in the evening, George Lobb, an attorney with the Austin Lawyers Guild, said at least 54 people were arrested.

Officials had said that many faced charges of trespassing. A post from DPS also noted that state troopers responded to campus at the request of Gov. Greg Abbott.

Students began walking out of class just before noon, meeting outside the Gregory Gym. They eventually made their way to the South Mall, in front of the UT Tower, advancing even as officers tried to stop them.

Some state troopers carried assault rifles and others were stationed on horses. Periodically, officers could be heard ordering students to leave or face arrest.

Students chanted back to the officers, “Off our campus!”

Abbott posted on social media late Wednesday that “arrests being made right now & will continue until the crowd disperses. These protesters belong in jail. Antisemitism will not be tolerated in Texas. Period.”

He went on to say, “Students joining in hate-filled, antisemitic protests at any public college or university in Texas should be expelled.”

In addition to protesters, a video journalist was arrested while covering the events.

Student organizers of the UT rally shared on social media that they planned to walk out of class, “reclaiming our space as we demand divestment now.”

Huzi Sid, 23, a senior studying business, said today’s protest was about bringing awareness to the fact that people in Gaza are being “killed and massacred for just existing, for being born into a certain place.”

Sid said what is happening in Gaza is genocide and that he wants the killing to stop.

“Imagine leaving your house to go to work every single day and one day you come to the barricades there and you have to pass through a checkpoint,” he said. “[Palestinians] have been discriminated against nonstop in the West Bank, in Gaza, in Israel itself.”

UT President Jay Hartzell issued a statement late Wednesday noting that the university “held firm, enforcing our rules while protecting the Constitutional right to free speech. Peaceful protests within our rules are acceptable. Breaking our rules and policies and disrupting others’ ability to learn are not allowed.”

Hartzell said that the student group leading the protest made clear ahead of time that they were going to “occupy” the campus, which violates rules of the institution.

“The protesters tried to deliver on their stated intent to occupy campus. People not affiliated with UT joined them, and many ignored University officials’ continual pleas for restraint and to immediately disperse,” Hartzell said. “The University did as we said we would do in the face of prohibited actions.”

Erick Lara, 20, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering, said he was on his way to the gym in the afternoon when he ran into the protest. He said it seemed to transform within minutes from a peaceful rally to one in which he saw people being arrested.

“I didn’t think it would escalate this far,” he said. “And I didn’t think there would be this much police intervention from what’s supposed to be a peaceful protest. Not very peaceful when there’s a bunch of aggressors around, especially on horses.”

UT officials sent out a letter earlier saying they would not tolerate disruptions “like we have seen at other campuses.” A spokesperson for the university’s division of student affairs said in the statement that, “This is an important time in our semester with students finishing classes and studying for finals, and we will act first and foremost to allow those critical functions to proceed without interruption.”

Lara added that students have been upset with UT President Jay Hartzell for not speaking up about the war in Gaza, which is part of the reason why they were protesting.

KXAN news reported that a letter sent to the student organization Palestine Solidarity Committee from UT’s Office of the Dean of Students informed the group on Tuesday that the students were not permitted to hold their event on campus.

“Refusal to comply may result in arrest,” the letter read. It went on to note that the group had “declared intent to violate our policies and rules, and disrupt our campus operations” with Wednesday’s planned rally.

Meanwhile, in North Texas, dozens of students at the University of Texas at Arlington also walked out at that school on Wednesday, gathering in front of the campus library. Social media videos showed students with signs and a banner that read “Stop arming Israel.”

On Tuesday, about 100 students at UT Dallas occupied the administration building for several hours also calling for officials to pull university investments from companies that are supplying weapons to the conflict in Gaza.

At that gathering, students were seen singing, writing to school officials and even doing homework as the night went on before an announcement was made that the campus president would meet with them. The UTD students had noted they were also protesting against Abbott’s executive order that the governor said was aimed at fighting antisemitism, charging schools with updating their free speech policies.

In the order, issued in early April, Abbott noted that he wants college officials to establish punishments — including expulsion — and to “ensure that groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Committee and Students for Justice in Palestine are disciplined for violating these policies.”

The Texas protests this week come days after students at Columbia University in New York were arrested and charged with trespassing.

Campuses nationwide have had protests since Oct. 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking around 250 people hostage, according to the Israeli government . In the months following, Israel bombed the Gaza strip multiple times, killing over 34,000 people, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza . The Dallas Morning News cannot independently verify these numbers.

At UT, many students wore keffiyehs — a scarf that has been a symbol of support for Palestinians. Some students began setting up tents on the south mall.

“You don’t scare us,” the student crowd chanted, facing the officers. “We are the people!” “We pay your paychecks.”

Jasmine Santilla, 20, a sophomore studying accounting, said she saw students protesting peacefully when law enforcement showed up.

“They weren’t throwing anything around, not harming anyone,” she said. “And the cops came in and arrested a good amount of people. For what?”

Meanwhile, dozens of students with Israel flags and signs watched from the sidelines, among them freshman Corey Taitel, 19.

“It’s great that [the police] are on our side,” the business major said. “They see the things happening in the Ivy League, and it’s extremely scary. So I feel overall safe.”

Taitel said his mother has been calling him worried for his safety as a Jewish student.

“Today three girls started screaming at me. They told me I need to burn my flag,” he said of the small Israeli flag he had. “I don’t think they should be arrested if they’re just standing there. But everybody that’s been arrested has [done something].”

By the early evening, the south mall was cleared off with a wall of officers prohibiting access.

Organizations and politicians across the country are watching the protests evolve at UT and other campuses.

“Though we fully respect the need for the campus to maintain security and keep individuals on the campus safe, what we saw today was far beyond that and caused fear and intimidation to many people on the University campus,” Gary Bledsoe of NAACP Texas and Brian Evans of American Association of University Professors Texas said in a joint statement.

“This is a deeply alarming and sudden escalation at UT-Austin, seemingly on the basis of the behavior of students on other campuses,” said Kristen Shahverdian, campus free speech program director at PEN America, in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

Law enforcement must prioritize deescalation tactics and constructive dialogue during peaceful demonstrations, Shaimaa Zayan, operations manager of the Council on American-Islamic Relations chapter in Austin, said in a statement.

“Arresting students advocating for peace sends the wrong message and only exacerbates tensions further,” Zayan said.

When asked by a reporter whether the White House has any concern regarding police response during protests, spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that since events at UT were happening as she spoke, she didn’t know how it was being dealt with on the ground.

“But, look, we’ve been very clear we want to see this be peaceful. We understand it’s deeply concerning,” she said. “It should not be violent.”

2025 4-Star Guard to Potentially Visit Michigan State

Jerry Easter, a class of 2025 4-star guard from La Lumiere School, is considering visiting Michigan State.

Michigan State men's basketball and Coach Tom Izzo continue to make progress in the 2025 recruiting class.

According to Jamie Shaw of On3, 2025 four-star guard Jerry Easter is considering a visit to Michigan State.

Easter, a 6-foot-4 combo guard who will be entering his senior year at La Lumiere School/IN, is the No. 28 player in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking.

Per Shaw, "Easter averaged 18.2 points and 5.9 rebounds playing on Nike's EYBL Scholastic Circuit this high school season."

According to 247Sports, Easter has nearly 40 offers, including Michigan State's fellow Big Ten rivals (current and soon-to-be) Illinois, Ohio State, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Michigan, and Washington.

Easter told Shaw he has already officially visited Oregon and Georgia Tech and is "going to look at visits to Ohio State and Michigan State next school year."

“It’s Coach (Tom) Izzo for me," Shaw said of his interest in the Spartans . "Every time I go there for an unofficial visit, he is just fun to be around. He has so much energy. I went to a couple of games and he just brings a lot of energy on and off the court, I like that about him. I like how he coached AJ Hoggard and Tyson Walker. Coach Izzo is a legendary coach. I’m definitely considering Michigan State as well, they have a high profile and a great coaching staff.”

That's some notable praise for the legendary Spartans coach.

Understandably, the Spartans don't have any 2025 commits yet, but they have some great talent coming from the class of 2024.

Jase Richardson, their top 2024 recruit and 247Sports' No. 4 combo guard in the country, is the son of Michigan State basketball legend Jason Richardson. Next is four-star shooting guard Kur Teng and three-star power forward Jesse McCulloch.

Izzo will have his hands full with the competition surrounding Easter's recruitment, but if development is what is catching the young guard's eye, Izzo is his guy. Hoggard and Walker are only two of some of Michigan State's best guards in recent seasons, and there could even be more before Easter moves on to the college level.

Fans of Taylor Swift often study up for a new album, revisiting the singer’s older works to prepare to analyze lyrics and song titles for secret messages and meanings .

“The Tortured Poets Department” is getting much the same treatment, and perhaps no group of listeners was better prepared than the students at Harvard University currently studying Ms. Swift’s works in an English class devoted entirely to the artist . The undergraduate course, “Taylor Swift and Her World,” is taught by Stephanie Burt, who has her students comparing Ms. Swift’s songs to works by poets and writers including Willa Cather, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.

On Thursday night, about 50 students from the class gathered in a lecture hall on campus to listen to Ms. Swift’s new album. Mary Pankowski, a 22-year-old senior studying history of art and architecture, wore a cream sweatshirt she bought at Ms. Swift’s Eras tour last year. The group made beaded friendship bracelets to celebrate the new album, she said.

When the clock struck midnight, the classroom erupted into applause, and the analysis began. First, the group listened through the album once without discussing, just taking it all in.

Certain lines, however, immediately caused a stir, said Samantha Wilhoit, a junior studying government — like a reference to the singer Charlie Puth and the scathing lyrics to the song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” Ms. Wilhoit, 21, said.

A line from the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” in which Ms. Swift sings, “I cry a lot but I am so productive,” also seemed to resonate, Ms. Wilhoit said, laughing.

A smaller group of students, including Ms. Pankowski, stuck it out until the early hours of the morning waiting to see if Ms. Swift would drop additional music. At 2 a.m., they were rewarded with an additional “volume” of 15 tracks called “The Anthology.” Ms. Pankowski said she didn’t go to sleep until hours later.

Speaking with The New York Times together on a video call Friday morning, several students from the class discussed their thoughts on the 31 new songs and brainstormed their final papers, which are due at the end of the month.

“The song ‘Clara Bow’ reminded me of ‘The Song of the Lark,’” Makenna Walko, 19, said, citing the Willa Cather novel that follows the career of an aspiring opera singer, Thea Kronborg. “She’s talking about a girl trying to make it out of her small town and trying to get to Manhattan, and what it’s like to have these big, musical dreams and try to pursue them,” she continued. “That’s a narrative that has shown up a lot in Taylor’s own life, over the course of her own career. In a lot of ways, it’s Taylor’s story, too.”

Lola DeAscentiis, a sophomore, zeroed in on the song “But Daddy I Love Him,” comparing it to the Sylvia Plath poem “Daddy.” She plans to explore the link in her final paper.

“I hesitate to say that the song was anywhere near the genius of Sylvia Plath — no offense to Taylor Swift — but I can definitely see some similarities in the themes, like sadness, depression and mental health,” Ms. DeAscentiis, 20, said. (Ms. DeAscentiis also drew a distinction between being a fan of Ms. Swift and being a devoted Swiftie. She said she identified as the former.)

“The way that Taylor overlays her relationship with the significant other that she’s talking about in the song with the relationship that she has with her father — I think that was very Plath,” she added.

Another student, Ana Paulina Serrano, echoed Ms. DeAscentiis, noting that the class had learned about the genre of confessional poetry. “Is Taylor considered a confessional poet?” Ms. Serrano, a 21-year-old junior majoring in neuroscience, asked the group on the call. In support of her own position, she offered as evidence Ms. Swift’s song “Mastermind,” a track off “Midnights,” in which Ms. Swift reveals herself to have calculated and plotted the outcome of a relationship.

“Sometimes she’s confessing things that we, like, already knew or assumed, but she often seems to feel this need to explicitly tell us,” Ms. Serrano added.

Isabel Levin, a 23-year-old senior studying integrative biology, said she thought Ms. Swift’s delivery on several tracks had a spoken-word quality. She wondered if maybe some of the lyrics had initially begun not as songs but as more traditional poems.

Ms. Swift has said she categorizes her songs by the type of pen she imagines using to write each. A “frivolous, carefree, bouncy” song is a glitter gel pen song, while a fountain pen song might be more “brutally honest,” according to Ms. Swift . Quill pen songs are “all old-fashioned, like you’re a 19th-century poet crafting your next sonnet by candlelight,” she explained during her acceptance speech as songwriter-artist of the decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards in 2022.
