What are Motion Graphics? (Beginner’s Guide with Templates and Examples)

  • what are motion graphics

motion design presentation

By 2022, 82% of all internet traffic will be video views, according to a report by Cisco. It’s safe to assume that many of them will be content marketing videos, aimed at engaging audiences and interesting them to take an action, make a purchase, or see a concept with fresh eyes. It is also safe to assume that many of these videos will be motion graphic videos.

So, why are “motion graphic” and “video” used as sometimes distinct, sometimes interchangeable terms? How do you choose which type of video (or motion graphic) is right for you? And how can you create one that will engage your audience and achieve your goals? We know you have plenty of questions, so let’s get right to it. Whether you’re a marketer, a C-suite exec, or a brand builder, this is your complete guide to understanding and learning motion graphics and video.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

1. What are motion graphics? 2. What is the difference between animation and motion graphics? 3. When should a brand use motion graphic video? 4. Types of motion graphics 5. What are examples of motion graphics? 6. Softwares used for motion graphics 7. How to make motion graphics- the easiest way in 2022

1. What are motion graphics?

Motion graphics refer to animated graphic design. They are pieces of animation or digital footage which create the illusion of motion. Graphic designers usually combine them with audio for multimedia projects. Have a look at this motion graphic video featuring the title sequence of a film called Big Fish.

Here's a motion graphic template by InVideo for the Netflix show "Dark".

Want to animate characters to bring a children’s fairy tale to life like Disney does? That’s actually not motion graphics. It’s a completely different type of animation.

While there are many types of content that can engage people, motion graphic videos are particularly suited to help brands tell their stories. Here are a few qualities that make motion graphic videos so suitable for storytelling and brand building:

A. Motion graphic videos help establish a point or drive an action

Motion graphic videos usually have animated text at the least. They can also have mood setting music, voiceovers, and other animated shapes and more. These videos successfully emphasise a point or drive a certain action by appealing to human emotions and needs. An interesting motion graphic example is this video by The School of Life on our human need for connection.

B. Motion graphics make it easier to understand content

From graphs to bar charts, timelines, or even abstract, intangible concepts, motion graphic videos make it easy for us to understand a concept of a situation. A lot of explainer videos end up being motion graphic videos. For example, check out this short video explaining the production of the COVID-19 vaccine by Vox.

C. Motion graphic videos require little from the viewer

Most motion graphic videos are short. So viewers can just sit back, relax and watch a motion graphic or an animated video to learn or understand something in a short amount of time. For example, check out this 3 minute explainer video on Bitcoin.

D. Motion graphic videos are easy to repurpose

Like any other video, a motion graphics video too can be cut into smaller snippets. You can make promotional cuts for Facebook , Instagram , Twitter, and more from a single video. For instance, The School of Life once again has shared a small highlight of their short documentary on “How To Find Fulfilling Work?” as an IGTV video . You can watch the entire motion graphic video on YouTube here .

So how do motion graphics differ from animation? Let's understand this next.

2. What is the difference between animation and motion graphics?

Motion graphics , as explained earlier, involve animating a graph, an infographic, or even web design. Check out this GIF featuring motion graphic elements denoting the city of London. As you can see, motion graphics are associated with setting abstract objects, text, and other graphic elements, into motion.

In contrast, animation as a specific art form focuses more on cinematic effects and storytelling techniques to craft a narrative. Check out this video talking about the famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. While this video is animated, it does not use motion graphics.

So, if your video uses motion graphics to make a point, it would be motion graphics animation. But if your video is more like a Pixar film, taking the character on an emotional journey, this falls more under the label of animation.

3. When should a brand use motion graphic video?

Let’s see when your brand can go with a motion graphic video:

- Motion graphics are best for outlining or emphasizing facts and illustrating a point you’re trying to make.

- Motion graphics are used when there’s no need for narrative or complex storytelling.

- Motion graphic videos can break down your services or products and present them poignantly.

- Remember, motion graphics are at their core visual aids, so they excel at teaching hard-to-understand ideas through visuals.

- If you want to highlight the emotional aspects of a story, provide a complex narrative or if you need to connect with your audience on a deep, emotional level, you want to go with other kinds of animation. You can still include motion graphic elements, but you can go for other animation effects too, in such a case.

As an example of a powerful motion graphic video, check out this animated retelling of Carl Sagan’s famous address after coming back from space, The Pale Blue Dot.

You’ll notice that they have used motion graphics with Carl Sagan’s voiceover to illustrate the speech. The background music adds depth. But the video is devoid of any other type of animation.

4. Types of motion graphics

There are various types of motion graphic videos. Let’s look at some popular types of motion graphic videos.

A. Explainer Videos

Motion graphic explainer videos are used by brands to explain everything from how their systems work to processes and products. Motion graphic videos can also explain concepts and create awareness. For example, check out this video explaining the history of coffee.

Motion graphic explainer videos take a complex process or situation, and use animation to break down the process to manageable chunks that tell the complete picture. It is a way to help people emotionally connect with your brand because you can bring storytelling to the mix. A video can package your sales/product into a nice emotional and engaging story that increases your bottom line. Create your own explainer motion graphic videos super quick and easy using InVideo’s free explainer templates .

B. UI Animations

Motion graphics can be used to create UI (user interface) animation prototypes. UI refers to a series of screens, pages, and visual elements like buttons or icons, that make up an app or a website.

Designing UI is an important skill that is the base you need when building a website from scratch. Motion graphic designers work on “wireframes” or mock sketches of how a website page, or other elements will look. They then animate these sketches to show how a menu would pop up, how something slides in or out, and more. For example, check out this UI animation of an expense tracker app. It shows how much money each family member spent and their total expenses through the animation.

UI animation can be especially useful when talking to developers on how you want a website to look.

C. Icon/ Element Animations

Motion graphic designers can also animate elements like icons on your website, in your video, and more. For example, check out these motion graphic animations of different icons.

These individual elements like icons, line animations, and more are available as templates online for designers. They can simply download and reuse in their own videos and other properties. Download your own free elements to be used in videos here .

You know all those times when you watch a YouTube video these days, and you see an interesting logo before the video starts off? These logo sequences are also motion graphic animations. Motion graphics bring personality to your design, and in this case, logo design. One of the most popular motion graphic logos we look at daily, check out one version of the Google doodle with motion graphic animation.

These playful, event-based animations are now synonymous with the Google brand, right!? There’s a ton of logo motion graphic templates on InVideo that you can use for free to create your own stunning, effortless, logo reveals. Check them out here .

E. Short Films

While they usually make short animated films using different animation techniques, motion graphics are also a part of this process. The advantage of using motion graphics in short films is that it helps create and enter a world that is totally imaginary. You can create a visual representation of emotions, feelings and other intangible quantities using motion graphics animation. For example, check out this short film explaining the scientific reason for life by Kurzgesagt - In A Nutshell.

F. Title Sequence

Title and credit sequences for films and even YouTube videos are made using motion graphics. One of the most popular graphic designers to work with title sequences, when the art had just taken off, was Saul Bass. He created the famous title sequence for the film “Anatomy of A Murder.” Have a look at this early example of a motion graphic video.

You can now create your own stunning and powerful title sequences using InVideo ’s many motion graphic logos and introduction templates .

G. Presentation & Infographics

Motion graphics can animate your presentations , graphs, bar charts, and more. This makes your work look more professional and sophisticated. One can even create a CV video using motion graphics! Creating animations for interactive infographics can be key for an engaging experience. For example, check out this motion graphic video sharing information about Omega Pharma.

Motion graphics can help solidify how the animation should occur. Another option with infographics, is to turn your infographic into an explainer video .

So these are the various types of motion graphic videos you’ll see online. Next let’s look at some beautiful examples of motion graphic usage.

5. What are examples of motion graphics?

6. Softwares used for motion graphics

If you are interested in a career as a motion graphic designer, you’ll need to use professional-level softwares that you need proper training in. As a beginner, you have 2 major options to get started. Let’s see what they are:

Option 1: Get hands-on with multiple complex softwares. Let’s look at what softwares you will need:

- You have to first work on resizing images or creating images with textures and colours, etc using Adobe Photoshop .

- You can also use Adobe Illustrator to work with transparent or vector based images you get online. You can use Illustrator to directly draw your graphics before animating them as well.

- Finally, to animate your still images, use Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere Pro . After effects is a software created just for motion design, while Premiere Pro is an overall video editing software.

- Apart from these softwares, there are also softwares like Cinema 4D and Mocha AE that motion graphic designers use.

But these tools are complex and need dedicated practice to master. If you want to create a quick motion graphic design video without all the brouhaha of learning these softwares, check out the easier option.

Option 2: Create your motion design video online for free!

This is the option that a majority of marketers, designers, and creators are switching to right now.

Motion graphics & video presentations.

An innovative way to communicate, motion graphics blends storytelling and design with audio and movement to create eye-catching content that audiences want to consume. Stand out with 2D and 3D hand-drawn digital illustrations and advanced animations that bring your story to life.

Demo Videos

The classic how-to video reinvented, demos show your customers how something works step by step.

  • This instruction-led, educational approach allows your viewer to follow along visually as you show them how to use your platform, software or mobile app in full detail.
  • This is usually done using a screencast, which displays the user interface a viewer can expect to see, where to navigate in order to find key features, and how to gain the most from the product.
  • Demos can also be animated, and used to showcase the functions of a physical product.
  • Commonly used to tackle Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) or to onboard new customers and employees, a demo video will no doubt create an outstanding brand experience.

PowerPoint Explainer Videos

Quick and simple, explainer videos beautifully describe your business, product, or service in 2 minutes or less by highlighting key benefits, leaving your audience engaged and ready to take action.

  • Think of an explainer video as an elevator pitch for your company—something you can use again and again, that turns complex ideas into easy-to-understand explanations.
  • Watching a video with both audio and visuals makes it easier for your viewers to remember you than if they were reading a text description. In fact, audiences are 10x more likely to engage with video content than a text-only post.
  • With or without animated characters, use this quick, informative and effective way to identify with your customers’ pain points, and offer your solution.

Video Infographics

Information transformed, video infographics bring data to life, using motion graphics to package dense content into an interesting, logical, and easy-to-digest format.

  • Using storytelling to take the viewer on an engaging journey, custom illustrations represent information in a way that is exciting and most importantly, memorable. When a relevant image is paired with information, people retain 65% of the information three days later, as opposed to retaining only 10% when there isn’t an associated visual.
  • All kinds of information can be conveyed in a video infographic—findings from a report, industry stats and current trends, or high-level conclusions from research. Upgrade a static infographic to a video infographic, and grip your audience in a highly shareable blog post or email newsletter.

Animated Presentation Process

From initiation to final delivery, we ensure the highest quality service.

Scriptwriting

Storyboarding, illustration.

We kick off with an in-depth conversation about your brand, audience, and story. It’s important that we understand your requirements and preferences upfront to ensure the most successful result. At this stage, we go through a few questions, which form the brief we use to get the creative juices flowing!

Here, our talented wordsmiths weave together the perfect story. Based on our initial discussions, we develop a video script that meets your project objectives, including the desired length, personality and tone. We rely on your revisions and feedback to craft an award-winning script.

Conceptualization

With a strong understanding of your business objectives, we collaborate to develop a stand-out visual concept. This is where the fun begins: mood boards, color palettes, icon styles and potential character development all begins here! The result? A strong theme we’re proud to present to you.

We select the best combination of voiceover, sound effects, and music to give your video a personality of its own. By sifting through a library of options, we choose a few of the best suited audio options for your video and, together with you, decide on the right fit.

Once the concept is a go, we create digitally hand-drawn sketches that lay out the  story, frame by frame. In conjunction with the script, the storyboard brings the theme to life, demonstrating a tangible aesthetic which hints at the final product.

Illustration takes the storyboard to the next level. By combining elements of the mood board, color palette and styles we agreed on in the conceptualization phase, custom characters, backgrounds, and other visual elements add the detail required to take us into our most exciting phase: animation!

This is where the magic happens! We bring the video to life with sophisticated design and motion graphics. We check in regularly to update you on our progress and direction, listening to any input and feedback you may have.

Final Delivery

Once every detail is perfected, watch it all come together in the home stretch. We deliver the final product in HD, in any file type you require. Whether for your website, social media pages, or your next email marketing campaign, get ready to debut your final video and impress your audiences!

Innovations in class action settlements.

Flowing from screen to screen, this video displays the ease with which claimants can be paid and the impact on the speed and efficiency of the judicial process.

With a wide range of findings in the report, it was our task to bring this data together and portray it in a way that viewers could quickly understand the information, as well as its relevance. To do so, we leveraged off the report’s key findings to create a detailed video infographic that tells the story of what motivates employees to work for one brand over another.

Dos and don'ts for creating a motion design portfolio

Zoe

For an animator or motion designer, a portfolio is a must.

You can't send a PDF or Dropbox link of videos to a potential employer. They need to see them in action – in an environment where you control the quality, timing and presentation of every piece.

Carbonmade is made for animation & motion work. Here's how to make a portfolio that moves your audience:

❌  DON’T embed videos from external platforms

Your portfolio is about you – why have YouTube’s logo all over it? External embeds from somewhere like YouTube or Vimeo look cluttered, clunky and spammy on a website. Plus, they can be taken down from YouTube at any moment for licensing or other reasons, leaving you with an empty site.

✅  DO upload high-res videos to your site

In Carbonmade, you can drag & drop video files from your computer straight into your portfolio. We support 4k video , meaning your videos will be as fast, crisp and liquid smooth. And with auto-play, looping videos and customizable player controls, it’s going to look 10x better than those clunky video embeds.

✨ PRO TIP: If you want to call attention to specific parts of a scene, cut the video or trailer into auto-playing GIFs. Take us through the story GIF by GIF, pointing out details with short captions.

❌ DON’T leave anything to guesswork

The video looks great, but where was it used? What was the goal of the campaign? What restrictions were you working within?

✅ DO set the scene in short case studies

This is your chance to show off: What should we know to fully appreciate the visuals we’re about to see? What special details would we miss if you didn’t point them out?

Set the scene with a short description of the project, your goals, and how you contributed (you can use the Description & Info block in Carbonmade for that). Then, using the Experience & Details block, list the client name, platform, results and any other important context for the project.

❌ DON’T settle for a portfolio template

Templates limit your possibilities and make it harder for your site to evolve. If you want to update your design or change your layout, you need to start from scratch with a new template. Which means most portfolios fall by the wayside and look dated quickly.

That’s not the case with Carbonmade.

✅  DO use Carbonmade to build a site that evolves with you

In Carbonmade you build your site with blocks, meaning it takes minutes to switch up your site anytime you want. No templates locking you in, no daunting redesigns.

Not feeling your homepage? Just change your portfolio grid style, or swap out your navigation. Sick of your site colors or typography? Update them in seconds.

All visuals here were created by Aran Quinn. You can see his full portfolio here, made with Carbonmade.

What is Motion Design? A Complete Guide For Beginners

motion design presentation

Table of Contents

Motion design is a unique branch of graphic design that integrates motion to breathe life into animated graphics. Considering that a larger percentage (65%) of the human population are visual learners who comprehend and retain information much better when presented visually, motion graphic design presents a more electrifying visual experience by adding animation into the mix.

The exciting features and capabilities of motion design have made it ubiquitous, taking center stage in various domains, including film, television, websites, applications, advertising, marketing, and across all social media platforms to captivate and engage audiences. Consequently, understanding the steps involved in creating motion graphics is becoming increasingly essential.

This guide will explain the definition and history of motion design and its future prospects. If you have an interest in pursuing a career as a motion designer, we will also provide a brief overview of the role and guide you on how to embark on this professional path.

What is Motion Design?

Motion Design

Motion graphics, otherwise called motion design, is a creative field that blends graphic design with animation to bring visuals to life. It’s the art of adding movement, dynamics, and storytelling to static graphics, making them engaging and captivating for various media.

Motion design can be found in a wide range of applications, from movie credits and commercials to animated logos, video game development, explainer videos, and even user interface animations in apps and websites. It’s all about using animation techniques to convey information, evoke emotions, and create memorable visual experiences. So, motion design is the magic that turns still images into moving, attention-grabbing visuals.

Brief History of Motion Design

The history of motion design is a fascinating journey that has evolved alongside advancements in technology, communication, and artistry. Here’s a brief overview of its key milestones:

Early Animation (Late 19th to Early 20th Century)

Motion design’s roots can be traced back to the late 19th century with the invention of devices like the Zoetrope and the Phenakistoscope. These early optical toys created the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of static images in rapid succession.

The first animated film, “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” by J. Stuart Blackton, was created in 1906 using stop-motion techniques.

Golden Age of Animation (1920s to 1960s)

The 1920s saw the emergence of iconic characters like Mickey Mouse and the development of the multiplane camera by Disney, which added depth to animation.

In the 1930s and 1940s, animation studios like Disney, Warner Bros., and MGM produced classics like “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Looney Tunes.”

Introduction of Computer Graphics (1960s to 1980s)

The 1960s brought the advent of computer graphics, with pioneers like Ivan Sutherland creating computer-generated animations. In 1982, John Lasseter created the first 3D computer-animated short film, “The Adventures of André & Wally B,” a precursor to the Pixar revolution.

Digital Revolution (1990s to Present)

The 1990s witnessed a digital revolution in animation with the release of Pixar’s “Toy Story” in 1995, the first feature-length computer-animated film.

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the rise of motion graphics in web design as designers started using Flash and other tools for interactive animations. In recent years, motion design has become increasingly prevalent in advertising, marketing, user interfaces, and social media, with an emphasis on creating engaging and visually appealing animations.

Current State (21st Century)

Motion design has evolved with the proliferation of modern computing technology, leading to stunning visual effects in films, immersive video games, and interactive multimedia experiences.

The integration of motion graphics in user interfaces, explainer videos, and social media content has made it an essential element of modern communication and branding.

Today, motion design continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements and the creative innovation of designers and animators. It plays a pivotal role in captivating and engaging audiences across a wide range of media.

Motion Design vs. Animation: What’s the Difference?

Motion Design vs. Animation

Motion design and animation are related fields that involve creating moving visuals, but they have distinct differences in terms of purpose, scope, and techniques. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences between motion design and animation:

Motion Design

Motion design focuses on creating motion within static or existing visual elements. It often involves animating typography, graphics, logos, and other design elements. It aims to enhance these elements’ visual appeal and storytelling capacity while maintaining their original design.

Motion design is often used to convey information, enhance branding, or add visual interest to various media, including websites, presentations, advertisements, and user interfaces. It is heavily used in user interface (UI) design, where subtle animations can improve the user experience and guide user interactions.

3. Techniques

Motion designers use animation software and tools to create animations but focus on integrating motion seamlessly into existing designs. They often emphasize principles like timing, easing, and rhythm to ensure that the motion feels cohesive with the overall design.

4. Examples

Examples of motion graphics include the following:

  • An animated logo that transitions smoothly from one state to another.
  • Typography animations that make text elements more engaging in videos or presentations.
  • Animated infographics that explain complex data visually.

Animation is a broader field that encompasses the creation of characters, objects, or scenes from scratch and bringing them to life through movement. It includes techniques such as traditional hand-drawn animation, 3D animation, stop-motion animation, and more.

Animation is often used to tell stories, create characters, and build entire worlds in movies, television shows, video games, and short films. It is not limited to enhancing existing designs but is the primary medium for storytelling and entertainment.

Animators use a wide range of techniques and software specific to their chosen form of animation, whether it’s traditional drawing, computer-generated imagery (CGI), or stop motion. Character design, rigging, and keyframe animation are common practices in animation.

Examples of animations include the following:

  • Animated feature films like Pixar’s “Toy Story.”
  • Cartoons and animated series like “The Simpsons” or “SpongeBob SquarePants.”
  • 3D character animations in video games.

In summary, motion design focuses on enhancing the motion of existing visual elements, while animation involves creating visuals from scratch and bringing them to life through movement. Both fields require creativity and technical skills, but their applications and objectives differ significantly.

Film and Video Production

The original home of motion graphics lies in the film industry, making it possible to transform still images into moving characters. But like the other examples, motion graphics are best used in creating:

  • Title Sequences : In movies and TV shows, motion design is often used to create film titles that set the tone for the story.
  • Visual Effects (VFX) : Motion graphics play a vital role in enhancing visual effects, from futuristic interfaces to otherworldly landscapes.

4. E-learning and Training

E-learning and Training

Motion graphics are not only useful in advertising, marketing, and entertainment, but they are also very effective in enhancing learning. Unlike shooting actual learning videos, motion graphics offer instructors a cost-effective and engaging option to convey their message. They are widely used in creating:

  • Interactive Learning Modules : For e-learning platforms, motion design helps create interactive modules that engage learners and make complex topics easier to understand.
  • Training Videos : In corporate training, motion graphics make instructional videos more engaging and memorable, improving knowledge retention.

5. Event Promotion

Event Promotion

Finally, Promotional motion graphics can be an excellent option for promoting events and driving audience engagement ahead of the event. They can be used to create:

  • Event Teasers : Motion design creates excitement for upcoming events with dynamic teaser videos, event logos, and promotional materials.
  • Live Event Graphics : During live events, motion graphics are used for presentations, digital signage, and on-screen animations to enhance the overall experience.

These are just a few examples of how motion design elevates visual communication across various industries. Its ability to convey information in an engaging and memorable way makes it an invaluable tool in today’s visually-driven world.

Types of Motion Design Used By Marketers

Here are the three specific types of motion graphics animations used by marketers:

1. Explainer Motion Graphics

Explainer motion graphics are short animations designed to simplify complex ideas, products, or services. They aim to educate and engage the audience by breaking down information into easily digestible visual elements.

Explainer motion graphics are widely used in marketing to introduce a new product, explain its features, or showcase how a service works. They can be found on websites, social media, email campaigns, and in presentations. By providing clarity and a compelling narrative, explainer motion graphics help marketers connect with potential customers and drive conversions.

2. Promotional Motion Graphics

Promotional motion graphics are dynamic animations created to promote products, services, events, or special offers. They are attention-grabbing and often convey a sense of urgency or excitement to encourage action from the audience.

Marketers leverage promotional motion graphics across various platforms, including social media, websites, digital advertisements, and email marketing campaigns. These animations can be used to highlight limited-time offers, product launches, discounts, and upcoming events. By adding motion and visual appeal, promotional motion graphics entice viewers to explore further and make purchasing decisions.

3. Emotive Motion Graphics

Emotive promotional graphics focus on evoking specific emotions or feelings in the audience. They use motion and visual storytelling to create a powerful emotional connection between the brand and the viewer.

These graphics are often employed in branding campaigns to convey the brand’s values, mission, and ethos. They can be featured in commercials, brand videos, and social media campaigns. By appealing to viewers’ emotions, emotive promotional graphics aim to establish a deep and lasting bond with the audience, fostering brand loyalty and engagement.

Each of these motion graphic types serves a unique purpose in marketing. Explainers clarify promotional entice, and emotive graphics connect deeply emotionally. Marketers strategically deploy these motion graphics to achieve specific campaign goals and effectively engage with their target audience.

How To Create Motion Graphics

Creating motion graphics involves a combination of artistic creativity, technical skills, and a well-structured workflow. Here’s a dive into the process of creating motion graphics:

Step 1: Conceptualization and Storyboarding

It starts with clearly understanding your project’s objectives and target audience. What message are you aiming to convey? Storyboarding comes next, where you sketch out the visual sequence, transitions, and key elements, providing a visual roadmap for your motion graphic.

Step 2: Asset Creation

Once your concept is solidified, it’s time to gather or create the necessary assets. Depending on your project’s requirements, this could include text, graphics, images, or even characters. These elements serve as the foundation for your animation.

Step 3:Animation

The heart of motion graphics lies in animation. Choosing the right animation software, such as Adobe After Effects. Organize your elements using layers, with each layer representing a visual element. Keyframing plays a significant role, as it defines animations’ starting and ending points, including properties like position, scale, opacity, and rotation. Don’t overlook timing and easing; these aspects ensure smooth and realistic motion. Visual effects and transitions can also be added to enhance the overall look and feel of your motion graphic.

Step 4: Audio Integration

If your motion graphic incorporates audio, it’s essential to synchronize it with the visuals. Ensure that voiceovers, music, or sound effects complement the animation. Audio editing may be necessary to fine-tune tracks to match the timing and mood of your animation.

Step 5: Review and Feedback

Internal review is crucial to scrutinize your work for details, timing, and overall coherence. Seek external feedback from colleagues or clients to gain valuable insights and make refinements as needed.

Step 6: Export and Rendering

Choose the appropriate export settings based on your intended platform, whether it’s for the web, social media, or presentations. Rendering your animation generates the final video file.

Step 7: Testing and Optimization

Before deployment, it’s essential to ensure your motion graphic functions seamlessly on various devices and browsers if it’s web-based. Optimization efforts balance visual appeal with loading times.

Step 8: Deployment

Finally, publish your motion graphic on the intended platform. This could involve uploading it to a website, sharing it on social media, or incorporating it into a presentation. The deployment phase brings your creative work to your audience, allowing them to engage with your motion graphic.

Creating motion graphics is a dynamic and creative process that combines artistic vision with technical expertise. Attention to detail, timing, and storytelling are key factors in producing engaging and impactful motion graphics for various applications, from marketing to entertainment and education.

6 steps every motion graphics project should follow (before animation)

motion design presentation

Follow this step-by-step guide to learn the modern process of planning a motion graphics project in Milanote, a free tool used by top creatives.

Great motion design doesn't spring fully formed from a designer's mind, there are many steps to the pre-production process. Yet so many people jump straight into animating things, only to run into issues that could be avoided by better planning. Whether you're making a TV commercial, music video, animation, or online video, a solid pre-production plan will set your project up for success.

In this guide you'll learn the critical steps of motion design pre-production...

  • 1. Project plan Set up a place to plan your project
  • 2. Brief Define the concept and goals
  • 3. Brainstorming Generate ideas for your project
  • 4. Moodboard Organize inspiration & references
  • 5. Storyboard Visualize the sequence of your animation
  • 6. Style frames Share visual concepts with your team

1. Project plan

Traditionally, a project plan might be scattered across various emails, to-do lists, spreadsheets, and documents, making it hard to keep track of everything. A central project plan combines these artifacts into one easy-to-access place. It will evolve over the lifespan of your project but usually includes:

  • Inspiration and moodboards
  • Storyboards
  • Workflow checklist
  • Style frames

Motion graphics guide step01

Create a new board for your film project plan

Create a new board

Drag a board out from the toolbar. Give it a name, then double-click to open it.

Choose the Motion Design Plan template

Choose a template

Each new board gives you the options to start with a beautiful template.

It’s crucial to set a strong foundation from the start. A clear, inspiring, and informative brief provides the structure and direction for designers to do their best work. Motion graphics briefs typically include background information, goals, deliverables, visual and animation references, creative direction, and a style guide.

Motion design brief guide step06

First, open the Brief board

You’ll find the board to create your brief on the Motion Design Plan board. Double-click the Brief to open it and start adding the goals, concept and defining the audience.

motion design presentation

Double-click the  Brief  board to open it.

Define the project

What do you want your animation or video to communicate? Is there a specific message or concept you have in mind? What do you want the viewer to feel when they see it? Use emotive words to communicate the brand style and tone of voice you want to express within the project.

motion design presentation

Add a note to outline the key messages.

Drag a note card onto your board

Start typing then use the formatting tools in the left-hand toolbar.

List the deliverables

What are the specific outputs you require? Is it a TV spot, an animation for a game, or a video for Youtube? Try and provide as much detail as possible. The technical constraints will help inform the design and production process, costs, and timeframe for the project.

motion design presentation

Add a note to describe the deliverables.

Describe the target audience

This is where you describe a specific type of audience and detail what’s important to them. What do they care about? What inspires them? Include any relevant research or stats you have. All this helps the designer choose a mood or animation style that speaks to your audience.

motion design presentation

Add a note to describe your audience.

Start typing then use the formatting tools in the left hand toolbar.

Share the finished brief with your team

Once you’ve made any final tweaks, it’s time to share the completed brief with your team, organize a kickoff meeting, and get started. If you want to learn more about writing a motion design brief, check out our in-depth Motion Design Brief guide .

motion design presentation

Publish and share the brief with your team.

Add a welcome message to your board.

Write a welcome message under the "Publish & share" menu. This will display the first time someone views your board.

3. Brainstorming

When a new motion design project kicks off, your starting point is often just a rough concept or idea. So how do you transform that idea into something bigger? Brainstorming!

Brainstorming is a classic creative technique for generating new ideas quickly. You can use it to explore animation styles, dream up new characters, locations, or even the visual style you're after. It’s best thought of as a way to light up our imagination.

motion ideas brainstorm step06

First, open the Ideas board

You’ll find the board for brainstorming on your Motion Design Plan board. Double-click the Ideas board to open it and start brainstorming.

motion design presentation

Double-click the Ideas board to open it.

Start with your central topic

What's the key message or idea your want to communicate through your project? This is your starting point. It might be just a rough idea at the moment or a topic that you want to explore, but this process will help you see how far you can take it. Add a note that describes your topic in 1 to 2 sentences to get started.

motion design presentation

Add a note to describe the topic of your project.

Your initial idea doesn't need to be something groundbreaking, you'll transform it over time. As Steven Spielberg says "All good ideas start out as bad ideas, that's why it takes so long."

Add as many ideas as you can

Now it's time to get creative. Start adding any ideas that relate to your main topic. Think about different ways to communicate your message, animation styles you could use, characters, or even the history of your topic. Explore every thread until you fill the board.

Don't worry about evaluating your ideas yet, that will come later. Just add as many as you can. Setting a timer for 5 minutes is a great way to create a sense of urgency and prevent people from judging their thoughts.

motion design presentation

Invite others to add their ideas.

Invite editors to your board

Open the "Editors" menu from the title bar of your board. Add email addresses of the people you'd like to collaborate with—they'll receive an invitation via email.

Add a note for each idea.

Add inspiring imagery, motion & sound

Sometimes it's easier to communicate an idea with an image or video, especially if it's a mood or style you're trying to express. Gather reference imagery, videos and sound and add them into the mix. These can become the foundation for a moodboard as your project evolves.

motion design presentation

Use the built-in image library.

Use the built-in image library

Search over 500,000 beautiful photos powered by Unsplash then drag images straight onto your board.

Drag images from your computer onto the board.

Upload a image or document

Click the "Upload file" button or just drag a file onto your board. You can add images, logos, documents, videos, audio and much more.

Finally, group your ideas into themes

Once you've explore tangents and shared feedback, the next step is to make connections. This is where you see the magic of brainstorming.

Start by grouping similar ideas to uncover patterns in your thinking. Add a title to each group so it's easy to scan. You might find your ideas fall into groups like characters, key messages, styles or aesthetics but there are no rules about how you do it. Now you should start to see your initial concept coming to life.

motion design presentation

You're done brainstorming

Now that your brainstorming session is complete, you have a strong foundation for your motion design project! Remember, just as creativity and inspiration are constantly evolving, so are ideas. Come back and add to the brainstorm when inspiration strikes.

4. Moodboard

During brainstorming, you imagined the different parts of your project. It's time to start exploring some visual directions with a moodboard. Moodboards can help you visualize any aspect of your project. You could focus on how you want the finished design to look. Or they could be centered around collecting references for animation styles. You can create a moodboard for each of these separately or mix them all into one board. There are no strict rules.

Your moodboard will also be a fantastic reference for your team—from the client to the animators—it helps everyone visualize the end result.

motion design moodboard step09

First, open the Moodboard

You’ll find the board to make your moodboard on the Motion Design Plan board. Double-click on the Moodboard to open it and start adding your inspiration.

motion design presentation

Double-click the  Moodboard to open it.

Collect existing material

Start by adding any existing material you have—this could include examples from previous projects, client references or images you've saved as inspiration. These might not make it into the final moodboard, but they're still a great place to start.

motion design presentation

Drag files from your computer.

Upload a file or document

Add inspiring imagery and video.

The imagery you bring into your moodboard is what helps you express the look and feel of your project. Images can define things like character style, font choices, colors, scenes, and more.

You can start by saving visual references from around the web. There are lots of fantastic sites where you can find great visual inspiration for free, like Dribbble , Behance , and Designspiration .

motion design presentation

Install the  Milanote Web Clipper

Save images from other websites straight to your board.

Save content from the web

Roll over an image (or highlight text), click Save, then choose the destination in Milanote. Return to your board and find the content in the "Unsorted" column on the right.

Transform your board from messy to organized

Once you have all your inspiration in one place, the next step is to arrange your ideas to create the perfect layout. Start by exploring composition and introducing hierarchy. Place a key element to anchor your board, and change the size and position of the remaining elements to indicate their importance and relationships to one another.

motion design presentation

Resize your images to add hierarchy.

Resize images

Drag the corner of an image to resize it. Double-click the corner to return it to its original size.

Crop images.

Crop images

Double-click an image and press edit to crop or rotate it.

You’ve finished the moodboard!

Now that your moodboard is complete, you have a powerful visual reference for the style and animation of your project. Remember, you can create multiple moodboards to explore different directions at any time.

Next, we'll create a storyboard to map out the sequence of your animation.

5. Storyboard

Storyboards are a powerful way to visually organize the composition, action and look of a project before you start bringing it to life. As director, producer and screenwriter Martin Scorsese said, “The storyboard is the way to visualize the entire movie in advance.”

Many people devote their entire careers to storyboarding as it combines disciplines and techniques such as illustration, writing and production. Traditionally, a storyboard would be created with analog sketches, but with a modern digital tool you can use photography, animation, color and notes to highlight key characters, scenes and objects.

Motion designers Megaguide step05b

First, open the storyboard

You’ll find the empty Storyboard on the Motion Design Plan board. Double-click the Storyboard to open it and start adding the mapping out the key scenes.

motion design presentation

Double-click the  Storyboard to open it.

Map out the key scenes

When creating a storyboard, it’s crucial to know what story you’re telling. The best starting point is to break up the script or narrative you’ll be working from. Identify the key scenes and start to map them out on your storyboard.

motion design presentation

Add a column for each frame.

Drag a column onto your board

Name it, then drag any relevant notes or images into your column

Add images or sketches

Now it’s time to begin visualizing each scene. Some storyboard artists might begin sketching with a pen and paper first, but you can use reference photography, illustrations, screenshots, location shoots, and even motion to communicate each scene.

motion design presentation

Upload images for each frame.

Describe what happens in each frame

While each frame is a static image, try to communicate how it's going to look and feel as a moving sequence. Describes the style, mood, and behavior of any characters. Consider how you'll transition from one scene to the next. Add details about the sound or voice-over to help your team imagine the emotion and drama you're trying to create.

motion design presentation

Add a note to describe each frame.

Share it with your team

When you're ready, invite your team to review your storyboard and share their feedback. This is the perfect moment to see how others interpret your vision for the story. It's also a great opportunity to make any final tweaks while in pre-production. Adjust the order of your frames or edit the content based on everyone's feedback.

motion design presentation

Share the storyboard with your team.

Start a comment thread.

Start a comment thread

Drag out a comment from the toolbar on the left and place it on your board. Other editors can reply to your comment.

Mention teammates to get their attention.

Mention teammates to get their attention

Type '@' in any text field to mention someone who has access to your board. They'll receive a notification and be able to respond to your comment.

Your storyboard is done!

Now that your storyboard is complete, you have a clear vision for the sequence of your animation! Let's move on and create style frames to help you present the visual direction to your team.

6. Style frames

Style frames are a simple, visual representation of how the final animation will look, they're a critical step in the motion design process.

Motion designers, animators, and creative directors use them to present options to clients and teams before they start an animation. This gives everyone an opportunity to provide feedback and agree on a visual style early in the creative process.

Motion graphics guide step011

First, open the style frames board

You’ll find the Style Frames board to on Motion Design Plan board. Double-click on the Style Frames board to open it and get started.

motion design presentation

Double-click the  Style Frames board to open it.

Upload your concepts

Start by uploading the concepts you've designed so you can share them with your team. These are often 2D or 3D renders of a scene from a  storyboard  you've created earlier. It's best to present variations of the same scene side by side so your team can focus solely on the visual style rather than the contents of the scene.

motion design presentation

Upload images to your board.

Explain your thinking

Next, include some written notes about each option. This will help you explain your ideas and keep everything in context. You don’t have to go into too much detail—the goal is to explain the differences between the options you're presenting. Remember to give each concept a name so they're easy to reference.

motion design presentation

Add a note to describe each option.

Choose a final direction

Share the style frames with your team and get together to choose a final direction. Ensure that everyone on your team agrees on the final direction before you start animating. It's much easier to revise the style in this phase of the project compared to production, where simple changes can take days.

motion design presentation

Publish and share the board with your team.

Start a conversation about the options.

Mark your favourites using reactions.

Add emoji reactions to your content

Select an image or note and choose "Add reaction" from the left toolbar.

You're all done!

Compelling and Moving: A Guide to Motion Design Principles

By Micah Bowers

Micah helps businesses craft meaningful connections through branding, illustration, and design.

Motion has a profound impact on the user experience of digital products, but if interface elements don’t exhibit basic motion design principles, usability is undermined. In the context of user interfaces, motion is more than a visual garnish. It is a compelling force that bolsters product engagement and extends the reach of design communication.

Our world is one of movement. Even in still moments, leaves tremble and lungs expand. In the realm of digital product design, it would seem that motion is second nature, an extension of the everyday to be leveraged with little effort. If only that were true.

Just ask anyone who’s animated UI elements for the first time. Hours of effort yield amateur results. Something as simple as a card sliding onto the screen looks awkward. Why is that?

In theory, making UI elements move is easy. Define points on a predetermined path, and software tweens the gaps. In reality, it doesn’t work that way. Tools and techniques are essential, but they derive their power from motion principles. If motion is to enhance the usability of digital products, it must be founded on unchanging rules of behavior that apply to an infinite number of use cases.

The Origins of Motion Design

The marriage of motion design and UX is relatively new, but its roots are in Disney. Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston were among Walt Disney’s most valued animators and key contributors to classics like Pinnochio , Bambi , and Fantasia . Their 12 Basic Principles of Animation remain influential in motion graphics for film, television, and digital content.

The Disney principles distill the essential laws of physical motion for the sake of animated storytelling. They empower drawn characters to move and emote, but they don’t adequately address the interactive motion needs of modern user interfaces .

Contemporary designers have attempted to bridge this gap. One of the more illustrative examples is the 10 Principles of Motion Design , a Disney adaptation by animation expert Jorge R. Canedo Estrada . Still, the motion design basics call for translation if they are to be applied holistically to digital product design.

The most ambitious attempt to reorient motion principles around interactive UI elements (and their UX significance) is Issara Willenskomer’s UX in Motion Manifesto . Its depth is astounding, but it’s not light reading.

In establishing the 12 Principles of UX in Motion , Willenskomer:

  • Distinguishes motion design from UI animation
  • Articulates how motion aids usability
  • Unpacks the inner workings of core motion behaviors

Motion Design and UX: Important Distinctions

Before addressing the principles of motion graphics, it’s important to highlight key distinctions that appear throughout Willenskomer’s manifesto.

Motion Is More Than Ornamentation

Motion design is not synonymous with UI animation. This is crucial because UI animation is almost always treated as a cosmetic afterthought with no bearing on UX (except to add charm). Motion isn’t ornamentation, it is behavior, and behaviors can only help or hinder the user experience.

Two Interaction Types: Real-time vs. Non-real-time

Motion design is concerned with two fundamental interactions: real-time and non-real-time.

  • Real-time interactions provide immediate feedback when users manipulate UI elements on-screen. In other words, motion behaviors respond instantly to user input.
  • Non-real-time interactions occur after user input, meaning that users must briefly pause and watch the resulting motion behavior before continuing.

Motion Supports Usability

When it comes to UX, motion design must support usability in four distinct ways.

  • Expectation: When users interact with UI elements, what motion behaviors do they expect to see? Does motion meet the expectation or cause confusion?
  • Continuity: Do interactions produce consistent motion behaviors throughout the user experience?
  • Narrative: Are interactions and the motion behaviors they trigger tied to a logical progression of events that satisfies user intent?
  • Relationship: How do the spatial, aesthetic, and hierarchical attributes of UI elements relate to each other and influence user decision-making? How does motion impact the various element relationships that exist?

12 Motion Design Principles for Digital Products

Easing mimics the way real-world objects accelerate and slow down over time. It applies to all UI elements exhibiting motion.

The opposite of easing is linear motion. UI elements displaying linear motion go from stationary to full-speed, and full-speed to stationary, instantaneously. Such behavior exists nowhere in the physical world and appears halting to users.

2. Offset and Delay

When several UI elements move at the same time and speed, users tend to group them together and overlook the possibility that each element may have its own functionality.

Offset and delay creates hierarchy between UI elements that are moving at the same time and communicates that they are related, yet distinct. Instead of complete synchronization, the timing, speed, and spacing of elements are staggered, resulting in a subtle “one after another” effect.

As users journey between screens, offset and delay signals that multiple interaction options exist.

3. Parenting

Parenting links the properties of one UI element to the properties of others. When a property in the parent element changes, the linked properties of child elements also change. All element properties may be linked to each other.

For instance, the position of a parent element can be tied to the scale of a child element. When the parent element moves, the child element increases or decreases in size.

Parenting creates relationships between UI elements, establishes hierarchy, and allows multiple elements to communicate with users at once. For this reason, parenting is most impactful when used in real-time interactions.

4. Transformation

Transformation occurs when one UI element turns into another. For example, a download button transforms into a progress bar, which transforms into a completion icon.

From a UX perspective, transformation is an effective way to show users their status in relation to a goal ( Visibility of System Status ). This is especially helpful when the progression between UI elements is linked to a process with a start and a finish (e.g., downloading a file).

5. Value Change

Representations of value (numerical, text-based, or graphic) are abundant in digital interfaces, appearing in products ranging from banking apps to personal calendars to eCommerce sites. Because these representations are tied to datasets that exist in actuality, they are subject to change.

Value change communicates the dynamic nature of data representations and informs users that data is interactive and may be influenced to some extent. When values are introduced without motion, users’ willingness to engage with the data decreases.

Masking is the strategic revealing and concealing of parts of a UI element. By altering the shape and scale of an element’s perimeter, masking signals a change in utility while allowing the element itself to remain identifiable. For this reason, detailed visuals like photographs and illustrations are ideal candidates.

From a usability perspective, designers can implement masking to show users that they are progressing through a series of interactions.

In 2D space, there is no depth, and UI elements may only move along the X or Y axis. Overlay creates the illusion of foreground/background distinction in the 2D space of UIs. By simulating depth, overlay allows elements to be hidden and revealed according to user needs.

Information hierarchy is an important consideration when employing overlay. For example, the first thing users should see in a note-taking app is a list of their notes. Then, overlay could be used to unveil secondary options for each message—like Delete or Archive .

Cloning is a motion behavior wherein one UI element splits off into others. It’s a clever way to highlight important information or interaction options.

When UI elements materialize within an interface, they need a clear point of origin that links to an element already on-screen. If elements simply burst or fade into existence out of nowhere, users lack the context needed for confident interactions.

9. Obscuration

Picture a frosted glass door. It requires interaction to open, but it’s possible to discern (to some extent) what awaits on the other side.

Obscuration works the same way. It presents users with an interface that calls for interaction while simultaneously revealing a hint of the screen to follow. Navigation menus, passcode screens, and folder/file windows are common examples.

10. Parallax

Parallax is displayed when two (or more) UI elements move at the same time but at different speeds. Here again, the intent is establishing hierarchy.

  • Interactive elements move faster and appear in the foreground.
  • Non-interactive elements move slower and recede to the background.

Parallax steers users toward interactive UI elements while allowing non-interactive elements to stay on-screen and preserve design unity.

11. Dimensionality

Dimensionality makes it seem as though UI elements have multiple interactive sides, just like objects in the physical world. The behavior is achieved by making elements appear as if they are foldable, flippable, floating, or bestowed with realistic depth properties.

As a narrative device, dimensionality implies that the different sides of a UI element are linked and makes for seamless screen transitions.

12. Dolly and Zoom

Dolly and zoom allow users to “travel” through UI elements spatially or increase their scale to reveal greater levels of detail.

  • Dolly: Dolly occurs when the user’s point of view gets closer to (or further from) a UI element. Imagine a person with a camera walking up to a flower to get a closer shot.
  • Zoom: With zoom, the user’s point of view and the UI element remain fixed, but the element increases (or decreases) in size within the user’s screen. Now imagine that the person stays put and uses the camera’s zoom feature to make the flower appear larger.

Motion Is Communication

Interactive experiences demand motion in all its spry and subtle forms. When the principles of motion design are upheld, even the most rudimentary UI elements become sophisticated agents of human communication. When motion design guidelines are ignored, movement embodies characteristics not found in the natural world. No amount of aesthetic splendor can overcome the resulting clumsiness.

The relationship between motion design and the UX of digital products is rapidly maturing. A principled approach to motion prevents undue reliance on the fleeting utility of trends, tools, and techniques. Better still, it spans the divide between the abstract motion of elements on 2D screens and the perception of movement in a 3D world.

Understanding the basics

What is the difference between graphic design and motion graphics.

Motion graphics are animated, meaning they exhibit movement. This is not the case in traditional graphic design. By adhering to motion design principles, like easing and parenting, motion graphics make 2D screens come alive by mimicking movements found in the real world.

Why are motion graphics important?

In the context of user interfaces, motion aids usability by providing experiential continuity, creating outcome expectations, and leading users to their desired goals. Motion design principles, such as offset and delay, inform users of interaction possibilities and help them find important information.

Which software is best for motion graphics?

An increasing number of design programs are capable of producing motion graphics animations, and popular programs like Figma and Sketch support animation timeline integrations. However, the standard-bearer is Adobe After Effects, especially when it comes to experimentation and developing novel motion behaviors.

Where are motion graphics used?

Motion graphics animations are used in a diverse and growing set of digital media. Before 2007 brought a global influx of mobile devices, motion graphics were more commonly associated with film and television. Today, they are an integral part of the user experience of digital products and apps.
