Even if you are going out for just some groceries, the scale that is used for weighing them has maths, and the quantity like ‘dozen apples’ has maths in it. Mathematics, as a subject, is one of the most important subjects in our lives. Irrespective of the field, mathematics is essential in it. Be it physics, chemistry, accounts, etc. mathematics is there. The use of mathematics proceeds in our daily life to a major extent. It will be correct to say that it has become a vital part of us. Imagining our lives without it would be like a boat without a sail. It will be a shock to know that we constantly use mathematics even without realising the same.

From making instalments to dialling basic phone numbers it all revolves around mathematics.

Let’s take an example from our daily life. In the scenario of going out shopping, we take an estimate of hours. Even while buying just simple groceries, we take into account the weight of vegetables for scaling, weighing them on the scale and then counting the cash to give to the cashier. We don’t even realise it and we are already counting numbers and doing calculations.

Without mathematics and numbers, none of this would be possible.

Hence we can say that mathematics helps us make better choices, more calculated ones throughout our day and hence make our lives simpler.

Mathematics is what we call a backbone, a backbone of science. Without it, human life would be extremely difficult to imagine. We cannot live even a single day without making use of mathematics in our daily lives. Without mathematics, human progress would come to a halt.

Maths helps us with our finances. It helps us calculate our daily, monthly as well as yearly expenses. It teaches us how to divide and prioritise our expenses. Its knowledge is essential for investing money too. We can only invest money in property, bank schemes, the stock market, mutual funds, etc. only when we calculate the figures. Let’s take an example from the basic routine of a day. Let’s assume we have to make tea for ourselves. Without mathematics, we wouldn’t be able to calculate how many teaspoons of sugar we need, how many cups of milk and water we have to put in, etc. and if these mentioned calculations aren’t made, how would one be able to prepare tea?

In such a way, mathematics is used to decide the portions of food, ingredients, etc. Mathematics teaches us logical reasoning and helps us develop problem-solving skills. It also improves our analytical thinking and reasoning ability. To stay in shape, mathematics helps by calculating the number of calories and keeping the account of the same. It helps us in deciding the portion of our meals. It will be impossible to think of sports without mathematics. For instance, in cricket, run economy, run rate, strike rate, overs bowled, overs left, number of wickets, bowling average, etc. are calculated. It also helps in predicting the result of the match. When we are on the road and driving, mathetics help us keep account of our speeds, the distance we have travelled, the amount of fuel left, when should we refuel our vehicles, etc.

We can go on and on about how mathematics is involved in our daily lives. In conclusion, we can say that the universe revolves around mathematics. It encompasses everything and without it, we cannot imagine our lives.

Essay on Mathematics In Daily Life

Students are often asked to write an essay on Mathematics In Daily Life in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look

100 Words Essay on Mathematics In Daily Life

Counting money.

Every day, we use math when we spend or save money. Whether buying a candy bar or saving for a new toy, we need to know how much things cost. We add up prices and make sure we get the right change back. Without math, it would be hard to use money wisely.

Time Management

Math helps us manage our time. We look at the clock to decide when to wake up, go to school, or watch our favorite show. Schedules are all about numbers. We divide our day into hours and minutes to keep everything on track.

Cooking and Baking

When we cook, we use math to measure ingredients. A recipe might need 2 cups of flour or 1 teaspoon of salt. If we want to make more or less food, we have to adjust the numbers correctly. Math makes sure our food tastes good.

Playing Sports

Playing sports often involves math. We keep score, count points, and calculate distances when we play games like basketball or soccer. Knowing how many points we need to win can make the game more exciting.

Travel and Navigation

250 words essay on mathematics in daily life, math and shopping.

When we go shopping, math is our silent helper. We use it to check if we have enough money to buy things. We also compare prices and figure out discounts. If something costs $50 and there’s a 10% off sale, we need to calculate how much we save. That’s math too!

Cooking with Numbers

Cooking is like a tasty math problem. We measure ingredients, like cups of flour or teaspoons of sugar. If we’re making half a recipe, we need to divide the amounts. And cooking time is all about numbers. If a cake bakes for 30 minutes, we set a timer so we don’t forget.

Our day is full of schedules. We wake up at a certain time, go to school, and have classes that start and end at specific times. Planning our day means we’re using math to understand and manage time.

In sports, scores tell us who’s winning. And angles are everywhere! When kicking a soccer ball or shooting a basketball, the way we angle our foot or hand can make a big difference. That’s math in action.

Travel and Math

When we travel, we use math to plan the trip. We need to know how far we’re going and how long it will take. If we’re driving, we calculate how much gas we’ll need. All this planning involves math.

500 Words Essay on Mathematics In Daily Life

Mathematics: everywhere in our lives.

Math is not just a subject we study in school; it is a vital part of our everyday lives. From the moment we wake up until we go to sleep, math is there, even if we don’t always see it. In this essay, we will explore how math shows up in different parts of our day-to-day activities.

Shopping and Budgeting

Think about when you go to the store with your parents to buy groceries. The prices of items, the total bill, and the change you get back – all involve math. When your family plans how much money to spend on food, clothes, or games, they are using a budget. A budget is a plan for how to spend money, and making one requires adding and subtracting to make sure you don’t spend more than you have.

We use math to manage our time without even thinking about it. When you plan your day, you decide how many hours you will spend on school, homework, playing, and sleeping. If you have two hours to play and you want to play two games, you have to figure out how long you can spend on each game. This is dividing time, which is a math skill.

Sports and Games

If you play sports, you keep track of scores and points, which is math. Understanding how many points you need to win or how your team is doing in a tournament involves adding and subtracting. Even board games and video games often require players to count spaces, collect points, or manage resources.

When you go on a trip, math helps you get where you’re going. If you’re driving, you need to know how far you’re going and how long it will take. This involves math calculations like speed and distance. Reading maps and using GPS devices also require understanding scales and coordinates, which are math concepts.

Building and Creating

If you like to build models or create crafts, you are using math. You measure materials to make sure they fit together. When you draw or design something, you use shapes and symmetry, which are part of geometry, a branch of math.

Math is not just about numbers and equations we learn in school. It is a tool that helps us with everyday tasks. From managing money to playing games and cooking, math is a part of what we do and how we solve problems. Next time you do something routine, take a moment to see how math is helping you. You might be surprised at how often you use it without even realizing it.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

How Mathematics Changed Me

Illustration of the sky through a hole in graph paper

I have written about mathematics for The New Yorker and, lately, also in my book “ A Divine Language: Learning Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus at the Edge of Old Age ,” and I thought that I had said everything I had to say about mathematics and my simple engagement with it, but I find I can’t stop thinking about it.

Five years ago, when I was sixty-five, I decided to study adolescent mathematics, because my first encounter with it had left me feeling stupid and defeated. Also unsettled, privately, about my fitness for a successful life, since I hadn’t ever lost so profoundly to anything like I lost to math. It led me to wonder how many more losses might await me and how many might result from similar, not-yet-come-upon insufficiencies.

Studying simple mathematics a second time changed how I apprehended the world, which was an outcome I didn’t expect. I used to feel that I saw something divine in nature, and now I think that what I saw was an intimation of mathematical structure, of pattern and motion and symmetry and scale, among other things, and that these produced a sense of the divine. Is it possible that existence reduces to numbers, that things in themselves are numbers or, at least, can be described by them? It is an ancient conjecture that still has potency. Numbers originally described simple quantities then later showed themselves capable of describing grand aspects of nature intimately—the orbits of planets, for example. Mathematics is the language of science because it is the most efficient means we have for precisely describing complex material and even ineffable things. The theory of relativity can be expressed in prose, but E=mcÂČ is more succinct.

I did not expect that studying a childhood discipline would lead me to wonder about divine matters, but the possibility of a divine entity is threaded throughout mathematics, which, in its essence, so far as I can tell, is a mystical pursuit, an attempt to claim territory and define objects seen only in the minds of people doing mathematics. Why do I care about abstract possibilities and especially about God, when I have no idea what such a thing might be? A concept? An actual entity? Something hidden but accessible, or forever out of reach? Something once present and now gone? Something that ancient people appear to have experienced at close hand?

I seem temperamentally drawn to the idea of a divinity. As a child, I sometimes had the feeling of an accompanying presence, usually when I was by myself in the woods, a feeling of something infinite behind everything. It was an awareness of the world itself as somehow animated. This is a manner of thinking called immanence, in which the divine is believed to be among us, as it were, obscurely present, felt but not seen. I think so many people experience this that it seems quaint to regard it as original or even unusual. I simply add myself to those who have perceived it. There is a period of childhood when the balance between the conscious and the unconscious is not weighted so much toward consciousness, a period when one receives sensations differently and is less inclined to analyze them.

I feel this presence still, often in nature, in the vicinity of the infinitely large and the infinitely small, as in the night sky. Also, in the contemplation of the number line, which embodies both the infinitely small and the infinitely large. Infinity itself occasionally contradicts intuition. There are as many fractions as there are whole numbers, for example, but there are also an infinite number of fractions between any two whole numbers. Between any two fractions, no matter how tightly bound, there is sufficient room to place an infinite number of other fractions. An infinite collection of numbers exists, but there is also an infinite collection of numbers that haven’t been imagined yet. In “ Two New Sciences ,” Galileo noted the discordance in considering two line segments of unequal length. Each segment consists of an infinite number of points, but the longer segment would seem to have more points. He speculated that, on the one hand, the concepts of less, greater, and equal didn’t apply to infinite things, and, on the other hand, that there might also be a greater circumstance than infinity.

Something is infinite when it includes collections that have as many terms as it does, Bertrand Russell writes. Something is also infinite when you can take things from it without making it smaller. Such observations, while concisely Western, also seem to have the purpose of confounding the mind in a Zen-like way.

If one is inclined toward mysteries, mathematics can lead one to the conclusion that behind the veil of life there is a structure and an order. Among certain mathematicians, some of the great ones historically and presently, there is the belief that, at its highest ranges, mathematics seems to converge toward a unity and that this unity is God. The German mathematician Georg Cantor, the inventor of set theory, in the late nineteenth century, wrote that what surpasses all, the infinite set, was “the single, completely individual unity in which everything is included, which includes ‘the Absolute,’ incomprehensible to the human understanding. This is the ‘Actus Purissimus,’ which by many is called ‘God.’ ”

Further than that it is difficult to go. Human beings have only finite means for approaching God, and, since God is unknowable and absolute, it made sense to Cantor that any finite system would collapse into paradox as one comes near to the divine. Furthermore, in the region of absolute infinity it also made sense that the terms of the spatiotemporal realm would no longer hold. As Rilke notes in “ Worpswede ,” a monograph on landscape painting, “We shall often have to call a halt before the unknown.” None of what I studied illuminated anything for me so much as the idea that I don’t know, that there is more to life than I think.

I had sensed that in the design of the world, there was more than I had imagined there to be—an order, of a kind, if ephemeral, if imagined, still somehow real to me. It suggested that there was something at hand worth looking out for. It gave me a belief in a structure of some kind, elusively apparent, but present somehow. A thing behind the things. An unfolding moment by moment. Something not to be interrupted. A trembling quality to life, concealed or only intermittently revealed but entirely vital, and this thought was obscurely calming. I felt grateful for the knowledge and the opportunity to inhabit as well as I could and for as long as I can the modest standpoint of my life.

I don’t mean that I know this with certainty. It is a theistic apprehension. I cannot convince anyone else of it; it’s a matter of my experience. I would hope others might recognize it, but I might be just a crank indulging private and pointless notions. Regardless, where the world had seemed chaotic and even malign, brute, and mechanical, it now seemed to have the intimation of a pattern, like a design worked into a rug or the grain in a piece of wood. This is of course no observation of my own, but it is comforting, and mathematics, by my slight acquaintance, delivered me to it.

I had also hoped that math would make my thinking, such as it was, more rigorous, that it would lend it clarity and orderliness, and that since I never felt that I had this ability, I looked forward to acquiring it. I saw math as a kind of boot camp that I might have benefitted from had I been through it earlier. Instead, learning math broadened me in a way that I hadn’t anticipated. I had always approached arguments from the point of view of thinking that there was a winning position, and I worked, sometimes irrationally, to establish it. Irrationally, since prevailing was what mattered and sometimes one insists more emphatically when one’s points are less substantial. I learned instead to approach an argument for what I might learn from it. Whatever vanity I felt about having to be right seemed to fall away when I became more interested in knowing more.

I find myself now framing questions as forms of interrogation—if this is true, is it possible that one can assume this next step? Instead of resisting an idea, I find myself receptive to thinking, I didn’t know that. Things shift within me rather than line up in opposition. I assume that a problem has elements that I haven’t yet grasped or am even unaware of and only a patient interrogation can advance the matter, always with the awareness that where I arrive is only where I am now and that everything is subject to revision.

This affects how I move through the world. It locates one in the present, and it lessens the abrasion. It encourages tolerance and engagement and nurtures the capacity to see the world as complex and not merely in terms of one’s advantage. It enables me to be more attentive to another argument, instead of rejecting it before I understand it.

I recognize that I have a capacity that I didn’t have before, not to solve the time of the train’s arriving in Nebraska from Illinois and how long it took but to see the complexity of life and my circumstances. Life and its thousand and one things. I am enlarged beyond what I was, even if modestly.

There isn’t a reliable vocabulary for being beyond what one knows. The experiences are intensely personal, but they have also been enacted among all human beings in all our history. The circumstances are individual, but the experience is not. Now, I wonder, where do I go from here? ♩

Introduction

Mathematics is applied in every aspect of this life be it in our personal or professional lives. Mathematics is used to budget money and time, these aspects do not require formulas. People do not even realize they are applying mathematical concepts when budgeting. As a child I used to enjoy counting the number of stairs, this is whenever I went up the stairs. Mathematics was interesting by then; it involved simple concepts that did not require complex formulas.

As I grew up, I realized that mathematics was not as simple as I thought. My high school teacher could introduce new concepts now and then; with time I realized that with mathematics a lot of practice was required. Mathematics during my childhood was interesting; the teacher could make us practice until it became almost automated without us realizing it. Allen (2001) says that teachers use this tactic at elementary level to make mathematics interesting.

I compare mathematics to climbing a wall, sometimes it is very easy while it can prove to be very hard sometimes. One of my mathematics teachers used to describe mathematics as ‘a voyage of discovery. I am opposed to this, this is because sometimes we attempt to find solutions to mathematical problems but do not get to arrive at the correct answer, instead, we get more and more confused.

At one point, I remember our elementary teacher telling us that one divided by zero equals zero, this concept however changed when I joined high school, we were told that the answer is infinite. Could be that the elementary teacher did not want to go into detail about this since it would have been hard for us to understand.

In his book Overcoming Math Anxiety Tobias (2002), states that most people enjoy learning mathematics when they fully understand the concept. This statement is agreeable, it is common to find students doing calculations and arriving at an answer but if asked questions, they cannot infer anything from the answer they have gotten. I have experienced this severally, at some point; I could completely get absorbed when solving some mathematics problems that I even forget the time factor. This is when I can comfortably state what the answer means.

When it becomes hard to understand a mathematical concept, I spend less time trying to understand the concept since the efforts are not in most cases rewarding. A topic such as ordinary differential and linear algebra gave me a hard time. It is interesting to note that most students will have varying ideas of a topic; this just shows that the topic has not been well presented or is too hard for the students to understand (Tobias, 2002).

One thing that I love about mathematics is that the formulas do not change. Formulas that were introduced by Plato are still being used today (Allen, 2001). This field of study cannot be compared to other fields such as business and arts where ideas keep changing with time. Some simple formulas that were applied in elementary levels are still used in higher levels of learning. I have realized that with a good mastery of most of the formulas, it can be easy to solve most of the problems. To some extent I love mathematics. The main reason is that when it becomes too easy for concepts, I get absorbed and enjoy doing the calculations.

Mathematics was very enjoyable during my childhood years. The teacher was very dedicated when it came to teaching this subject. I had good mastery of the simple concepts taught and one thing that I enjoyed doing most is counting the number of stairs as I climbed up. Today, mathematics has ceased to be my favorite subject; this does not however mean that I hate it. The thing is that I only enjoy dealing with simple concepts. Hard concepts give me a hard time. I must admit that I was not born a mathematician like some people. The little concepts that I have are enough since they enable me to go about my budgeting without any problems.

Math Matters in Everyday Life

mathematics in my life essay

Dear Parents,

Math is very useful in everyday life. Math can help us do many things that are important in our everyday lives. Here are some daily tasks for which math is important:

  • Managing money $$$
  • Balancing the checkbook
  • Shopping for the best price
  • Preparing food
  • Figuring out distance, time and cost for travel
  • Understanding loans for cars, trucks, homes, schooling or other purposes
  • Understanding sports (being a player and team statistics)
  • Playing music
  • Home decorating
  • Gardening and landscaping

Parents can help teens connect math they learn in school and their everyday lives. As a parent, you could talk to your teen about how you use math in your daily life. You could also ask family members and friends how they use math in their daily lives. Please talk to your teens about these math connections to real world. Share with your child the examples of everyday math applications, which are listed below. When your teens hear how math can be used every day, they will be more likely to view math as important and valuable. They may also become more interested in mathematics. Remember that you as a parent can greatly influence how your child thinks about mathematics.

The testimonials included on this website give brief examples of how people use math in their daily lives. Please watch these. You can share information from these videos with your teen.

Examples of Math Connections to Daily life

Managing money.

Your teen will learn skills in algebra class that will help them with money. One important skill they will learn is how to calculate interest and compound interest. Your teen can use this skill to manage their money now and when they grow up. This skill also will help them pick the best bank account. It will also help them decide which credit card is best to have. People who take out loans need to understand interest. It will also help them figure out the best ways to save and invest money.

Recreational Sports

Geometry and trigonometry can help your teens who want to improve their skill in sports. It can help them find the best way to hit a ball, make a basket or run around the track. Basic knowledge of math also helps keep track of sports scores.

Home Decorating and Remodeling

Calculating areas is an important skill. It will be useful for your teen in remodeling future homes and apartments. It will help your teen find how much paint they need to buy when repainting a room. It is also an important skill for anyone who wants to install new tiles in a bathroom or a kitchen. Knowing how to calculate perimeters can help your child when deciding how much lumber to buy for floor or ceiling trim.

People use math knowledge when cooking. For example, it is very common to use a half or double of a recipe. In this case, people use proportions and ratios to make correct calculations for each ingredient. If a recipe calls for 2/3 of a cup of flour, the cook has to calculate how much is half or double of 2/3 of a cup. Then the cook has to represent the amount using standard measures used in baking, such as ¼ cup, 1/3 cup, ½ cup or 1 cup.

Your teen will use math when buying different items. When buying a new computer, your child will need to figure out which store offers the best price or best financing. Math is useful in finding the best deal for food items. For example, your teen will need to decide which pack of soda to buy when given a choice of 20 oz., 2-liter, 12 pack, or 24-pack. Stores often have sales that give a percentage off an original price. It is helpful for people to know how to figure out the savings. This math skill is very useful because it helps us calculate discounts so we can buy an item for the best price offered.
