Academic Rigor, Real-World Relevance

When you study at the undergraduate level, you are introduced to a field and gradually become aware of its unexpected nuances and complexities. At the doctoral level, you acquire an intellectual framework that allows you to embrace and accommodate that complexity as you strive to make sense of the world. As you progress, your novel insights help others make sense of the world as well. When that occurs, you are contributing to knowledge. Doctoral study is rigorous and immersive—but it is rewarding.

In the Kellogg PhD program, you will master an academic discipline—economics, psychology, sociology, operations research, or data science—and apply that mastery to real world problems facing managers and policy makers. This discipline-based approach prepares you to challenge conventional wisdom with new ideas, models, and empirical findings that have enduring impact on businesses, organizations, and communities. After leaving Kellogg, you can look forward to a career leading and inspiring others through teaching and research.

  • Kellogg’s distinguished faculty includes trailblazing scholars whose research has redefined the study of management and has set a standard for new ideas and innovation. Currently there are 139 tenure-track, research-based faculty, of whom 68 hold endowed chairs. The faculty’s commitment to scholarly inquiry is evidenced by the school’s many research centers, as well as by sustained scholarly output. Their work is published in peer-reviewed journals , and many Kellogg professors serve in editorial positions at leading research journals.  The Kellogg faculty is deeply committed to PhD education. Within the past five years, over 60 different faculty have served on at least 3 PhD dissertation committees, and a phenomenal 26 faculty have chaired at least 2 committees!
  • Kellogg faculty carefully balance their dedication to research with their commitment to teaching and mentoring PhD students, recognizing that both activities contribute to the quality of the education our students receive. The richness of the curriculum within this collegial environment encourages close working relationships between students and faculty across disciplines. We believe that this approach helps magnify our students' insights and perspectives as they are exposed to new ideas, possible thesis topics, and avenues of research. Collaboration does not stop at the walls of academia. As a world-class business school, Kellogg also offers tremendous opportunities to connect to real businesses, government organizations, and NGOs, which can translate into ideas and data for research. And Kellogg will provide you with the resources you need for data acquisition, technical support, research labs, and field study, so that you can turn your research ideas into reality.

In 1920, the University of Minnesota became the 18th school to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). AACSB accreditation assures quality and promotes excellence and continuous improvement in undergraduate and graduate business education worldwide.

AACSB International is an association of educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations devoted to the advancement of higher education in management education. It is also the premier accrediting agency of collegiate business schools and accounting programs worldwide.

Located at the University of Minnesota on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, and part of one of the leading public research land grant universities in the country, the Carlson School of Management has a rich history of preparing and educating the world's current and future business leaders.

Since its founding in 1919 as the University of Minnesota School of Business, the school has grown, changed names, and moved locations, all while maintaining a continued commitment to excellence. This evolution has been helped through the generosity of many business partners, most notably Curt Carlson and Herbert M. Hanson, Jr.

In 1986, Curt Carlson (founder of Carlson Companies and namesake of the Carlson School) made a $25 million gift to the University of Minnesota, which at the time was the largest single gift ever given to a public university. In his honor, the School of Management was renamed the Curtis L. Carlson School of Management. His gift established several endowed chairs and marked the beginning of Carlson School's ascent into the upper echelon of business schools. In 1993, Carlson made the lead gift for the Carlson School building, sparking gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations, as well as a legislative commitment. The building was dedicated in 1998.

In 2007, the Carlson School became one of the first business schools in the nation to require that undergraduate students participate in a global learning experience.

In 2008, Herbert M. Hanson, Jr., benefactor and University of Minnesota alumnus, supported the construction of Hanson Hall, effectively consolidating the school’s undergraduate classrooms, services, and programs in one location.

The University of Houston is, once again, demonstrating its strength as a global leader. UH has 18 programs ranked among the top in the world according to the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject , released today by QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

UH’s hospitality programs in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership led the way with a world rank of No. 35. The petroleum engineering program in the Cullen College of Engineering also ranked in the top 100 worldwide (51-100).

In its annual list, QS evaluated 55 narrow academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas by analyzing the reputation and research output of almost 5,000 institutions worldwide. In total, it provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 16,400 individual university programs in 96 locations around the world.

“We are pleased to have yet one more accolade confirming the quality of our programs. Our faculty members are at the forefront of groundbreaking research spanning various fields, positioning UH as a global leader in advancing societal progress and fostering innovation,” said Diane Z. Chase, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

In addition to the 18 individual subjects that were ranked, UH’s earned an overall world ranking in three of the five broad disciplines: engineering and technology, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

Using five key metrics— academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, research impact and cross-border research collaboration. Of the almost 5,000 institutions evaluated, fewer than a third of the institutions earned a published world ranking. The U.S. led the rankings with 213 institutions, followed by the United Kingdom (103) and China (101).

“QS’ analysis of performance trends across nearly 16,000 university departments worldwide continues to illuminate factors influencing the quality of higher education institutions globally,” said QS senior vice president Ben Sowter. “An international outlook remains paramount, manifested through diversity of students, faculty body and research relationships. Additionally, universities experiencing upward mobility have benefited from sustained, targeted investment, highlighting the importance of government support. Meanwhile, the development of partnerships with industry correlates with improved performance in employment and research.”

April 9, 2024 MBA programs see surge in rankings

Students in a classroom at Fisher.

Two of Fisher’s graduate business degrees were highlighted as among some of the best in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s  2024-25 Best Graduate School rankings released on April 9.

The Working Professional MBA ( WPMBA ) was ranked #5 among part-time programs at public colleges and universities (#10 overall) ― marking the third time in the last five years it was selected as a top-10 program.

Fisher’s Full-Time MBA ( FTMBA ) program saw significant improvement in its standings in the annual rankings, climbing to #11 among public institutions (#30 overall).

“We are proud that the hard work of so many associated with our MBA programs is reflected in these rankings,” said Anil K. Makhija, dean and John W. Berry, Sr. Chair in Business. “We have been intentional in how we have enhanced both programs to provide students with graduate business degree experiences that leverage the strengths of our college. The result is an MBA that’s more flexible, experiential and career-focused than ever before.”

“We look forward to building on this momentum and finding additional ways to innovate within the graduate business degree space.”

The WPMBA’s flexibility, coupled with its focus on preparing students with ready-to-use managerial and leadership skills, continue to differentiate it as a popular Part-Time MBA program nationally. Students can take classes entirely online, on-campus or via a mix of both ― and they have opportunities to control the pace of the program and take semesters off. Although most complete their degrees in 2.5 years, students have up to six years to complete their coursework.

The flexibility and “employer-ready” programming has sparked a recent jump in enrollment. With more than 500 students currently enrolled in the program, the program has grown by more than 60% since the 2021-22 school year.

Fisher’s Full-Time MBA continues its evolution into a degree that not only prepares students with the skills and perspectives to succeed, but it does so with a focus squarely on student outcomes.

Recent enhancements , which were driven by feedback from alumni and recruiters and part of the college’s commitment to continuous innovation in programming, focus on professional development and building interpersonal skills. The creation of Career and Industry Immersion Academies will give students defined opportunities to specialize in disciplines related to four highly relevant industries: finance; marketing; operations; analytics and supply chain; and strategy, leadership, and consulting.

Academic specialties within Fisher’s graduate programs also garnered positive rankings: accounting (#4 among publics), production/operations (#4); supply chain (#5); marketing (#6); finance (#6); and management (#15).

The graduate programs were among many other degree offerings at Fisher that have been recently recognized in U.S. News & World Report rankings, including: Undergraduate (#7 among publics), Executive MBA (#10) and Online Non-MBA program, namely Specialized Master in Business – Analytics (#20).

School of Business Graduate Program Surges in Top Rankings

The UC Riverside School of Business’ Master of Business Administration (MBA) program ranked No. 90 on the U.S. News & World Report graduate school ranking  released Tuesday, April 9. Though 506 accredited institutions were canvassed, only 124 U.S. graduate-level business programs provided sufficient information on post-graduation earnings and job placements to merit inclusion on the U.S. News list. Among public universities, UCR’s full-time MBA came in at No. 49, which places the School of Business in the top 50 for this category for 2024-2025. The school’s undergraduate program is ranked No. 70 in the nation in the current U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges, Undergraduate Business Program ranking.

“The school’s ascent in the rankings is a testament to its strategic initiatives, such as the expansion of its facilities and the enhancement of its academic offerings, which align with the evolving demands of the global business landscape,” said Rami Zwick, associate dean of graduate programs for the School of Business.

The rankings released this week are based in part on reputational surveys sent to more than 15,000 academics and industry professionals, including corporate recruiters. In the surveys, deans, program directors, and senior faculty are asked to judge the academic quality of a program.

In addition to the surveys, scoring factors selectivity — gauged by graduate exam test scores; undergraduate GPA, and acceptance rate. About half of the score is based on a change this year that places greater emphasis on earnings — assessing post-graduate salaries by profession — and successful job placement. The revised job placement metric rewards business schools when their graduates get jobs quickly — either when they graduate or within three months of graduation.

Separately, the business school’s part-time MBA program was ranked No. 73, an increase of three positions from the past year. That ranking was among 269 universities.

In fall 2024, the School of Business will mark the 55th anniversary of its founding and the 30th anniversary of the A. Gary Anderson School of Management with the opening of a new 63,400-square-foot academic building .

U.S. News & World Report , the standard-bearer among college rankings, publishes its anticipated undergraduate rankings every fall. In the most recent rankings, released in fall 2023, UCR climbed 13 positions to No. 76 overall among U.S. private and public universities. UCR was ranked No. 2 nationally in social mobility, which considers the degree to which a university elevates its graduates to a higher standard of living.

UCF is a leading metropolitan research university known for helping students unleash their potential and advancing innovation in our community and state. Led by world-class faculty members with unrivaled industry experience, UCF’s graduate programs continue to earn top national recognitions for accomplishing those goals and more.

More than 9,000 UCF students enroll in UCF’s graduate programs to advance their careers or launch new ones. And many are thriving on campus and after graduation in programs ranked among the best in the nation.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCF’s exceptional faculty and graduate programs in its 2024 list of Best Graduate Schools. UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and four programs rank in the top 25. Nine graduate programs placed in the top 50 nationally, including five in public affairs, three in education and one in health. U.S. News will release rankings for the engineering and medicine categories at a later date.

“UCF’s world-class faculty excel at providing our graduate students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive as innovative leaders and creators,” says President Alexander N. UCF Grads Shape Emergency Responses Nationwide

UCF has a proven track record in emergency management. The university’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program — which is offered the College of Community Innovation and Education — has climbed the rankings over seven consecutive years. The homeland security program and its faculty researchers enable students to navigate increasingly complex manmade and natural disasters, while learning from past disasters to improve their preparedness and response in the future.

Graduates of the program go on to become leaders in directing and implementing emergency responses in Florida and throughout the country, including in Boston and Washington, D.C. They are saving lives, helping communities prepare as well as possible to navigate disasters, and putting into practice the lessons they learned from outstanding faculty who contribute to  national research and regional solutions related to crises .

“Our students are equipped to assist communities and organizations in every phase of emergency management — from preparedness and mitigation to response and recovery,” says  Claire Connolly Knox, professor in UCF’s School of Public Administration.

“We are thrilled to be ranked No. 1 and nationally recognized again as a leader in emergency and crisis management,” she adds. “This honor highlights the innovative and community-focused research by our faculty and continuous engagement with community partners invested in our outstanding students and alumni.”

Other highlights include:

  • 12 in Education — Student Counseling and Personnel Services
  • 15 in Public Affairs — Nonprofit Management, up three spots since last year
  • 21 in Public Affairs — Public Management and Leadership, up five spots since last year
  • 27 in Public Affairs — Public Finance and Budgeting
  • 32 in Education — Curriculum and Instruction
  • 41 in Health — Physical Therapy
  • 42 in Best Education Schools, up four spots since last year
  • 47 in Public Affairs
  • 59 in Nursing — Doctor of Nursing Practice

UCF’s many strong rankings are a testament to the excellence of UCF’s faculty, who bring to the classroom extensive experience in academia, industry and research, as well as to the university’s commitment to help students unleash their potential in a culture focused on collaboration and finding solutions that benefit our society.

UCF students who have graduated from the nonprofit management program have gone on to make a big impact by helping communities in Florida and beyond. In one example, more than 12 years ago, program graduate Eric Camarillo ’16 ’19MNM launched faith-based nonprofit organization SALT Outreach Inc. in Central Florida to help provide services to the homeless, including mobile shower trailers, laundry, clothing, haircuts, mail services and help with employment. SALT has grown to more than 30 staff members who help hundreds of people every day.

“Throughout the School of Public Administration, our faculty, staff and advisory boards have worked hard to ensure we are offering students in Central Florida, across the country and around the globe a world-class, innovative education,” says Doug Goodman, professor and school director. “We are honored to be recognized as leaders in emergency management, nonprofit management, public leadership management and public finance and budgeting, fields that are critical to the health and well-being of our citizens and the success of our communities.”

The Best Graduate Education Schools category includes graduate-level educator preparation and advancement programs, such as teacher education, school counseling and psychology, educational leadership, and curriculum and instruction, all offered through the College of Community Innovation and Education. The college offers graduate students numerous opportunities to collaborate closely with expert faculty, from receiving mentorship and support in research and scholarship to engaging in robust internships and field experiences with school district, nonprofit and agency partners. Some faculty members also lead federally funded projects that offer tuition assistance and prepare students to work with students in high-need schools.

UCF’s continued rise has also drawn praise from other outlets:

  • In February, U.S. News & World Report released its best online program national rankings, which placed UCF tied at No. 7 in the nation for best online bachelor’s programs. Of the 14 UCF national rankings from U.S. News , six online programs made the top 10, two made the top 15 and three were in the top 50. UCF has ranked in the top 20 overall Best Online Programs for the past seven years.
  • In March, The Princeton Review and PC Gamer recognized UCF’s game design programs among the best in the world. The graduate Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy is ranked No. 1 in the world for the fourth time in five years. The undergraduate game design program, Games and Interactive Media (GaIM) in UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, achieved its highest ranking ever, advancing to No. 5 in the world.
  • Sports Business Journal named Orlando the No. 1 Best Sports Business City for event hosting, including the NBA, Orlando City and Orlando Pride Soccer, the nation’s premier tennis center, college football bowl games, the NFL Pro Bowl, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the Arnold Palmer Invitational — and, of course, the UCF Knights. With its inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, UCF has skyrocketed to unprecedented success as the youngest Power Four program in the country. With one of the country’s  top graduate sports business programs , UCF has also provided a pipeline of talented graduates to some of the nation’s biggest sports brands.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 11, 2024

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., April 11, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- For the third consecutive year, Supply Chain Management graduate programs in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, placed No. 3 among public schools and No. 4 nationally in U.S. News and World Report 2024 Best Graduate Business Schools specialty rankings. The full-time Haslam MBA program ranked No. 22 among publics and No. 47 nationally.

The Haslam College of Business has one of the most comprehensive, forward-thinking and highly regarded supply chain programs in the world. U.S. News & World Report and Gartner consistently rank it among the top five programs. An advisory board of more than 40 industry professionals informs its curriculum, and students develop applied skills to help improve organizational performance through supply chain management.

Haslam MBA students continue to enjoy robust career outcomes, including high placement rates and favorable salaries. In 2022, 95 percent of MBA students accepted positions within three months of graduation, up from 93 percent in 2021 and 87 percent in 2020. The average MBA starting salary was $110,914 in 2022, up from $101,408 the prior year, and the average signing bonus was $17,608, up from $14,833 in 2021.

Stephen L. Mangum , dean of the college and Stokely Foundation Leadership Chair, called the rankings a product of the college's commitment to delivering a world-class academic experience.

"Strong corporate connections and ongoing academic research drive our content delivery and our student outcomes," Mangum said. "Graduate students find an outstanding learning environment at Haslam, where they are immersed in the most current, relevant knowledge and tools by faculty who are leaders in their disciplines. Multiple opportunities for experiential learning and professional development are focused on enabling them to be leaders in the business world upon graduation."

Mangum added that the supply chain management graduate programs' long standing in the rankings shows that prospective and current students, alumni and peer institutions recognize their standing in the discipline.

"Haslam's supply chain graduate and executive education programs are some of the most popular on campus," Mangum said. "Their presence in U.S. News' top five indicates that the supply chain department is at the forefront of its field. Our faculty are dedicated to nurturing the strongest student outcomes through innovative, yet practical, course content, growing industry partnerships and pursuing relevant research. Through these efforts, they are helping businesses worldwide create more resilient and responsive supply chains."
