Any new business should have a business plan in place prior to beginning operations. In fact, banks and venture capital firms often want to see a business plan before they'll consider making a loan or providing capital to new businesses.

Even if a business isn't looking to raise additional money, a business plan can help it focus on its goals. A 2017 Harvard Business Review article reported that, "Entrepreneurs who write formal plans are 16% more likely to achieve viability than the otherwise identical nonplanning entrepreneurs."

Ideally, a business plan should be reviewed and updated periodically to reflect any goals that have been achieved or that may have changed. An established business that has decided to move in a new direction might create an entirely new business plan for itself.

There are numerous benefits to creating (and sticking to) a well-conceived business plan. These include being able to think through ideas before investing too much money in them and highlighting any potential obstacles to success. A company might also share its business plan with trusted outsiders to get their objective feedback. In addition, a business plan can help keep a company's executive team on the same page about strategic action items and priorities.

While it's a good idea to provide as much detail as necessary, it's also important that a business plan be concise enough to hold a reader's attention to the end.

While there are any number of templates that you can use to write a business plan, it's best to try to avoid producing a generic-looking one. Let your plan reflect the unique personality of your business.

Many business plans use some combination of the sections below, with varying levels of detail, depending on the company.

The length of a business plan can vary greatly from business to business. Regardless, it's best to fit the basic information into a 15- to 25-page document. Other crucial elements that take up a lot of space—such as applications for patents—can be referenced in the main document and attached as appendices.

These are some of the most common elements in many business plans:

  • Executive summary: This section introduces the company and includes its mission statement along with relevant information about the company's leadership, employees, operations, and locations.
  • Products and services: Here, the company should describe the products and services it offers or plans to introduce. That might include details on pricing, product lifespan, and unique benefits to the consumer. Other factors that could go into this section include production and manufacturing processes, any relevant patents the company may have, as well as proprietary technology . Information about research and development (R&D) can also be included here.
  • Market analysis: A company needs to have a good handle on the current state of its industry and the existing competition. This section should explain where the company fits in, what types of customers it plans to target, and how easy or difficult it may be to take market share from incumbents.
  • Marketing strategy: This section can describe how the company plans to attract and keep customers, including any anticipated advertising and marketing campaigns. It should also describe the distribution channel or channels it will use to get its products or services to consumers.
  • Financial plans and projections: Established businesses can include financial statements, balance sheets, and other relevant financial information. New businesses can provide financial targets and estimates for the first few years. Your plan might also include any funding requests you're making.

The best business plans aren't generic ones created from easily accessed templates. A company should aim to entice readers with a plan that demonstrates its uniqueness and potential for success.

2 Types of Business Plans

Business plans can take many forms, but they are sometimes divided into two basic categories: traditional and lean startup. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) , the traditional business plan is the more common of the two.

  • Traditional business plans : These plans tend to be much longer than lean startup plans and contain considerably more detail. As a result they require more work on the part of the business, but they can also be more persuasive (and reassuring) to potential investors.
  • Lean startup business plans : These use an abbreviated structure that highlights key elements. These business plans are short—as short as one page—and provide only the most basic detail. If a company wants to use this kind of plan, it should be prepared to provide more detail if an investor or a lender requests it.

Why Do Business Plans Fail?

A business plan is not a surefire recipe for success. The plan may have been unrealistic in its assumptions and projections to begin with. Markets and the overall economy might change in ways that couldn't have been foreseen. A competitor might introduce a revolutionary new product or service. All of this calls for building some flexibility into your plan, so you can pivot to a new course if needed.

How frequently a business plan needs to be revised will depend on the nature of the business. A well-established business might want to review its plan once a year and make changes if necessary. A new or fast-growing business in a fiercely competitive market might want to revise it more often, such as quarterly.

What Does a Lean Startup Business Plan Include?

The lean startup business plan is an option when a company prefers to give a quick explanation of its business. For example, a brand-new company may feel that it doesn't have a lot of information to provide yet.

Sections can include: a value proposition ; the company's major activities and advantages; resources such as staff, intellectual property, and capital; a list of partnerships; customer segments; and revenue sources.

A business plan can be useful to companies of all kinds. But as a company grows and the world around it changes, so too should its business plan. So don't think of your business plan as carved in granite but as a living document designed to evolve with your business.

11 Key Components of a Business Plan

Somebody asked me what the key components of a good business plan were, and I’m glad they did—it’s one of my favorite topics.

It gives me a chance to review and revise another of the lists that I’ve done off and on for years (such as the one from yesterday on  common business plan mistakes ).

  • 1. Measure a business plan by the decisions it causes

I’ve written about this one in several places. Like everything else in business, business plans have business objectives.

Does the plan accomplish its objective ? Whether it is better management, accountability, setting stepping stones to the future, convincing somebody to invest, or something else?

Realistically, it doesn’t matter whether your business plan is well-written, complete, well-formatted, creative, or intelligent. It only matters that it does the job it’s supposed to do. It’s a bad plan if it doesn’t.

  • 2. Concrete specifics

Dates, deadlines, major milestones, task responsibilities, sales forecasts, spending budgets, and cash flow projections.

Ask yourself how executable it is. Ask yourself how you’ll know, on a regular basis, how much progress you’ve made and whether or not you’re on track.

  • 3. Cash flow

Cash flow is the single most important concept in business. A business plan without cash flow is a marketing plan, strategic plan, summary, or something else—and those can be useful, but get your vocabulary right.

A business model, lean canvas, pitch deck, and so on can be useful in some contexts, like raising investment. But those aren’t business plans.

  • 4. Realistic

While it is true that all business plans are wrong , assumptions, drivers, deadlines, milestones, and other such details should be realistic, not crazy.

The plan is to be executed. Impossible goals and crazy forecasts make the whole thing a waste of time.

  • 5. Short, sweet, easy-to-read summaries of strategy and tactics

Not all business plans need a lot of text.

The text and explanations are for outsiders, such as investors and bankers; however, many companies ought to use business planning to improve their business operations. If you don’t need the extra information, leave it out.

Define strategy and tactics in short bullet point lists. Tactics, by the way, are related to the marketing plan, product plan, financial plan, and so on. Strategy without tactics is just fluff.

  • 6. Alignment of strategy and tactics

It’s surprising how often they don’t match.

Strategy is focus, key target markets , key product/service features, important differentiators, and so forth. Tactics are things like pricing, social media, channels, and financials, and the two should match.

A gourmet restaurant (strategy) should not have a drive-through option (tactics.)

  • 7. Covers the event-specific, objective-specific bases

A lot of components of a business plan depend on the usage.

Internal plans have no need for descriptions of company teams. Market analysis hits one level for an internal plan but often has to be proof of market or validation for a plan associated with investment. Investment plans need to know something about exits; internal plans don’t.

  • 8. Easy in, easy out

Don’t make anybody work to find what information is where in the plan. Keep it simple.

Use bullets as much as possible, and be careful with naked bullets for people who don’t really know the background. Don’t show off.

  • 9. As lean as possible

Just big enough to do the job . It has to be reviewed and revised regularly to be useful. Nothing should be included that isn’t going to be used.

  • 10. Geared for change

A good business plan is the opposite of written in stone. It’s going to change in a few weeks.

List assumptions because reviewing assumptions is the best way to determine when to change the plan and when to stick with it.

  • 11. The right level of aggregation and summary

It’s not accounting. It’s planning.

Projections look like accounting statements, but they aren’t. They are summarized. They aren’t built on elaborate financial models. They are just detailed enough to generate good information.

6 essential elements of a good business plan

Entrepreneurs, executives and venture capitalists discuss how to craft a business plan that will impress investors and be a good road map for your company..

Whether you are just starting out and need startup investment or are looking to expand your business and raise capital, a business plan is a must. Indeed, a business plan is not only essential if you want to get people to invest in your idea, it can help you articulate what it is you hope to accomplish with your business – your mission, goal(s) and values – and plot the company’s growth trajectory.

However, to be successful, a business plan cannot just be a bulleted list of an entrepreneur’s thoughts and musings, hopes and dreams. It needs to be a serious business document with the following six elements.

1. Executive summary

“An executive summary is the ‘elevator pitch’ of your business plan,” explains David Mercer, founder, SME Pals , a blog dedicated to helping entrepreneurs. “More often than not, landing a new investor relies on hooking them with a great elevator pitch. Without grabbing their attention, your business plan, no matter how well researched and presented, may not stand out enough.”

The executive summary should, in brief, describe the “problem you are going to solve, and why that problem needs to be solved right now,” by you, says Peter Arvai, CEO, Prezi presentation software. “If you aren’t able to communicate that deeper purpose to others, you will have a very hard time convincing investors to fund your idea and people to join your team.” 

Tip: Write the Executive Summary last, after you’ve done all your research and put everything down on paper.

2. Description and bios of your leadership/executive team

“The entrepreneur should clearly demonstrate what they are bringing to this venture – the idea, the technical ability or the passion,” says Hossein Rahnama, founder & CEO, Flybits . “Investors want to understand how you will execute using your personal strength.”

You should also “talk about the leadership team,” says Andrew Witkin, CEO, StickerYou . “If the leadership team has a previous track record of building and delivering businesses, this should be highlighted. Business plans serve multiple purposes, but one of them is to build trust, and the team is as important as the product to potential investors and partners.”

“Investors bet on jockeys, not horses, and knowing about who will execute on an idea is key to an investor making an investment decision,” says Richard J. Foster, president, Foster Management & Holdings. “Very frequently I’ll see multiple companies with the same idea, but the one to invest in is the one with the team who has the experience and the credentials to succeed. Having the best idea with the wrong team is a recipe for failure, but proving that your team is the [right] one to execute [your idea] can make all of the difference.”

3. Description of your product(s) or service(s)

“When developing a business plan, it’s crucial to clearly [explain] the need your product or service is trying to address,” says Elena Filimonova, senior vice president, global marketing and strategy, CGS . “Your business plan should highlight how the product or service will address the need, what is unique about your offering and why it would be difficult to replicate. To do this, you should outline key differentiators, features and why the product or service is something that stands out in the market.”

4. Market/competitive analysis

“Every business plan should have a section that defines the target sales market – who you are selling to,” says Victor Clarke, owner, Clarke Inc. “This is the part that requires considerable research into areas such as industry sales data related to the service or product you are selling and trends within the industry. You should look at competitors and see who they are targeting, look at your current customer base and create a profile of an ideal customer or client for your product.”

“For a business plan to be effective and attractive to investors and partners, you must be able to provide tangible data and information that supports the notion that your demographic is strong and growing, and that market trends support the continued need for your service or product offering,” says Brock Murray, cofounder & COO, seoplus+ .

“Sequoia Capital has a great framework that every business plan should use: separate your Total Addressable Market (everyone who conceivably needs your product category), Serviceable Addressable Market (everyone who needs your specific product or service, limited by factors like where you can do business) and Serviceable Obtainable Market (the portion of the market you can realistically capture),” says Christopher S. Penn, vice president, Marketing Technology, SHIFT Communications . “For example, lots of companies say everyone is a customer, and while that may be a TAM, if the company has only one salesperson, their SOM is significantly smaller. VCs and investors especially want to understand what’s realistically obtainable, and splitting out your addressable markets… shows them you’re not just presenting pipe dreams.”

Also be sure to “include a competitive analysis section,” says Bryan Robertson, founder & chief revenue officer, Mindyra . “Every business has competition, so it’s a good idea to research companies in your industry who are fighting for the same customers. You should include specific details about their strengths and weaknesses. This forces you to become very familiar with your market. It also encourages you to think of ways to differentiate your business [from] the competition.”

5. Financials (how much cash you need and when you’ll pay it back)

“Make sure that the plan goes into exacting detail about how much startup capital will be needed, where it will come from and how it will be paid back,” says Bruce Stetar, executive director, Graduate Business Programs, SNHU .  “Equal importance should be given to how you [plan to] pay back capital as how you acquire it. Investors want to know when they will see a return.  Failing to plan adequately for capital acquisition and payback is one of the chief reasons that new businesses fail.” 

“Whether you’re hoping to receive funding to build a brick-and-mortar shop or a technology venture, you must have your numbers straight,” says Erica Swallow, founder & CEO, Southern Swallow . “For tech entrepreneurs, I’m a big fan of the  startup financial model template  developed by startup investor David Teten, in collaboration with a couple of colleagues. Based in a nearly fully-automated Excel worksheet, it enables early-stage entrepreneurs to map out their financial plan, without being too overwhelming. It’s the best startup financial model I’ve encountered over the past five years.”

6. Marketing plan

“It is critical to have a plan [for] how you are going to spend your marketing budget,” says Deborah Sweeney, CEO, MyCorporation . “Assess different options (paid search, salespeople, flyers, [social media], etc.) and the associated ROI with each.”

“The plan should cover both sales and advertising strategies and costs,” says Stetar, as well as customer acquisition costs. “Be conservative here since you will look good if your over achieve but it will cost you investor confidence if you under achieve.”

A successful business plan is one is easy to read and follow

You need to make your business plan easy to read and follow. “There’s nothing more daunting than to receive an all-text business plan, 30 pages in length,” says Swallow. “Keep your potential investors engaged by including product and user photos, team headshots, colorful headings, financial graphs, charts, tables, anything to make reading more of a pleasure. Even bullet points help.”

Indeed, “don’t underestimate the importance of visuals,” says Arvai. “Researchers have found that presentations using visual aids are, on average,  43 percent more persuasive  than those without.”

Finally, before you go public with your plan, “have trusted mentors and expert peers look over it [and give you] their feedback,” says Sam Lundin, CEO, Vimbly . “Having [someone] review your business plan [before you present it to investors] is crucial.”

Lastly, be sure to outline the steps or milestones that you’ll need to hit to successfully launch your business. Step 1: Executive Summary

The executive summary will always be the first section of your business plan. The goal is to answer the following questions:

Step 2: Description of Business

The goal of this section is to define the realm, scope, and intent of your venture. To do so, answer the following questions as clearly and concisely as possible:

  • What does our business do?

Step 3: Market Analysis

In this section, provide evidence that you have surveyed and understand the current marketplace, and that your product or service satisfies a niche in the market. To do so, answer these questions:

  • Who is our customer? 
  • What does that customer value?

Step 4: Competitive Analysis

In many cases, a business plan proposes not a brand-new (or even market-disrupting) venture, but a more competitive version — whether via features, pricing, integrations, etc. — than what is currently available. In this section, answer the following questions to show that your product or service stands to outpace competitors:

  • Who is the competition? 
  • What do they do best?

Step 5: Description of Organizational Management

In this section, write an overview of the team members and other key personnel who are integral to success. List roles and responsibilities, and if possible, note the hierarchy or team structure.

Step 6: Description of Products or Services

In this section, clearly define your product or service, as well as all the effort and resources that go into producing it. The strength of your product largely defines the success of your business, so it’s imperative that you take time to test and refine the product before launching into marketing, sales, or funding details.

Questions to answer in this section are as follows:

  • What is the product or service?
  • How do we produce it, and what resources are necessary for production?

Step 7: Marketing Plan

In this section, define the marketing strategy for your product or service. This doesn’t need to be as fleshed out as a full marketing plan , but it should answer basic questions, such as the following:

  • Who is the target market (if different from existing customer base)?
  • What channels will you use to reach your target market?
  • What resources does your marketing strategy require, and do you have access to them?
  • If possible, do you have a rough estimate of timeline and budget?
  • How will you measure success?

Step 8: Sales Plan

Write an overview of the sales strategy, including the priorities of each cycle, steps to achieve these goals, and metrics for success. For the purposes of a business plan, this section does not need to be a comprehensive, in-depth sales plan , but can simply outline the high-level objectives and strategies of your sales efforts. 

Start by answering the following questions:

  • What is the sales strategy?
  • What are the tools and tactics you will use to achieve your goals?

Step 9: Funding Details (or Request for Funding)

  • How much capital do you currently have? How much capital do you need?

  • Keep It Simple: Avner Brodsky , the Co-Founder and CEO of Lezgo Limited, an online marketing company, uses the acronym KISS (keep it short and simple) as a variation on this idea. “The business plan is not a college thesis,” he says. “Just focus on providing the essential information.”
  • Do Adequate Research: Michael Dean, the Co-Founder of Pool Research , encourages business leaders to “invest time in research, both internal and external (market, finance, legal etc.). Avoid being overly ambitious or presumptive. Instead, keep everything objective, balanced, and accurate.” Your plan needs to stand on its own, and you must have the data to back up any claims or forecasting you make. As Brodsky explains, “Your business needs to be grounded on the realities of the market in your chosen location. Get the most recent data from authoritative sources so that the figures are vetted by experts and are reliable.”
  • Set Clear Goals: Make sure your plan includes clear, time-based goals. “Short-term goals are key to momentum growth and are especially important to identify for new businesses,” advises Dean.
  • Know (and Address) Your Weaknesses: “This awareness sets you up to overcome your weak points much quicker than waiting for them to arise,” shares Dean. Brodsky recommends performing a full SWOT analysis to identify your weaknesses, too. “Your business will fare better with self-knowledge, which will help you better define the mission of your business, as well as the strategies you will choose to achieve your objectives,” he adds.
  • Seek Peer or Mentor Review: “Ask for feedback on your drafts and for areas to improve,” advises Brodsky. “When your mind is filled with dreams for your business, sometimes it is an outsider who can tell you what you’re missing and will save your business from being a product of whimsy.”

And as with any sales pitch, you need to strike the right tone and hit a few emotional chords. This is a little tricky in a business plan, because you also need to be formal and matter-of-fact. Remember, you’re providing the big picture overview of your business - the detail is in the rest of the document and in the appendices.

2. Write your business overview

This section of your business plan needs to be more than just a list of what your business does. Its purpose is to excite those you’re hoping will work with you or help to fund your business.

Information to address includes:

What's the purpose of your business?

What problem does your business’ product or service solve?

What niche could it fill?

What’s different about your offering?

How are you better than anyone else at what you do?

Consider what your customer value proposition is by deciding what you want to achieve and what your number 1 benefit is for your customer.

3. Identify your USP

Think about what your unique selling points (USP) or differentiators are, and what proof-points you can provide to back them up.

For example, you can use terms like “market-leading” but if you don’t provide any evidence to back up your claims, your reader will take them with a big pinch of salt!

You should certainly reference any awards or endorsements that position you as the best person to provide your product or service, as well as any client testimonials. Make sure you include any education or experience that makes you an expert in your field as well.

4. Describe the market opportunity

Show you understand your industry, market and where you fit in it. While no-one can predict the future, offer up where you think the opportunity is for your business and make sales projections based on that. 

For example, imagine your business is selling personalised cookies - there's little competition in your area and you see your market opportunity to create designs for all calendar and holiday events. You expect to increase sales by 30% in one year and 50% in three years, driven primarily by word-of-mouth referrals.

Make sure you also consider macro trends that may create opportunities for you, such as social, environmental, or technological changes that may affect buying behaviour.

5. Include a SWOT analysis

Whatever your business strengths or opportunities, they’ll always be known and unknown weaknesses and threats; there’s no such thing as certainty in business or in life!

However, you can demonstrate that you’ve examined your business through different lenses and have a thorough understanding of it by doing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis.

Don’t worry about drawing attention to your business’ shortcomings - every opportunity has them and it’ll give investors and partners confidence in you that you won't bury your head in the sand. Naturally, it's important that you specify what you’re going to do to address these weaknesses and counter these threats.

Here are some areas you can think about to get started: reputation, technology, location, experience, staff, overheads, competition, suppliers and price.

6. Present a competitor analysis

Let’s face it, no matter what industry you’re in, or what you’re selling, there’s going to be other businesses offering the same thing. But instead of worrying about the competition, use this as a positive opportunity to up your game and work out the unique advantages you have that will keep you competitive.

Identify your top 3 competitors and analyse what they're doing well and where they’re coming up short. Try to be as objective as possible and identify how to differentiate yourself from them.

You should also look into who the industry leaders are and what the benchmarks are for your industry so that you can set yourself targets for continuous improvement.

7. Create a customer persona

A customer persona is a fictional person who represents your company's ideal customer. Naturally, the persona can be based on a real person - the more you get to know your ideal customer, the more targeted and successful your marketing efforts will be.

To create a customer persona, you need to conduct research into your ideal customer’s age, sex, income, employment, daily activities, interests and hobbies. If you’re feeling unsure about your customer persona, you may need to give your ideal customer further thought and download the customer persona template to get started.

8. Write your marketing strategy

When you’ve created your customer persona, you need to work out how you’re going to reach them. Do they hang out on social media apps, like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter or LinkedIn? Or are they more used to local, traditional marketing like free local papers or high foot traffic areas?

Once you’ve figured where your audience is likely to hang out, you can outline your strategies for promoting and advertising your products or services in the next 12 months.

Make a list of the marketing channels you’ll use to achieve your advertising strategy and be sure to include your budget. How much can you set aside for advertising? And where are you most likely to see a return on your efforts? Paid ads on Facebook? Half or full paid spreads in an industry magazine? Or even a direct mail out?

9. Design your customer retention strategy

Business success relies heavily on the relationship you’re able to build with your customers. What techniques will you use to keep them coming back? Consider the following:

What can your business do to increase the number of repeat customers? 

Does your business have a referral or loyalty program? 

Do you have a post-purchase follow up in place?

Will you use surveys to track customer satisfaction?

What ways can you continue delivering outstanding service?

Is there a way to continue educating and adding value to your customers?

10. Present your financials

Most people who are looking at investing their time and/or money in your business will want to see your financial statements - your performance to date and your projections over the short and medium term. They'll also want to know how much you’ve received in funding to date and what these other sources of funding are - including your own investment.

Current finances

You need to show how your business has performed financially over the last year, highlighting metrics such as positive cashflow , net profit and assets.

Financial forecasts

You should also provide a balance forecast projecting total assets, total liabilities and net assets over 1, 2 and 3 years, and a profit and loss forecast for the same periods detailing gross profit /net sales, total expenses and net profit/loss. Finally, you should also provide a cash flow forecast month by month over the next year.

It’s also a good idea to speak to an expert like an accountant or bookkeeper about your finances and get advice on how best to present them in this all-important section of your business plan.

11. Detail how much funding is needed

Naturally, you also need to be very clear about how much money you’re looking for and what you plan to do with it. If you’re looking for a loan , you need to detail what it’s for, over what period it’ll be repaid, and what collateral you have to secure it.

12. Propose an exit strategy

Any financial stakeholder in your business will want a return on investment. If you’re pursuing this type of funding, you should include some detail on your proposed exit strategy . For example, do you want to sell the company at some point or go public?

Similarly, you should outline your succession plan so the business can continue to operate if you decide to step away from it. Likewise, you need a plan for what happens if the business loses money and can’t sustain itself. Documenting this means that everyone is on the same page and potential investors have this information upfront.

This is placed as number one on our list of components of a business plan , but it can easily be the final stage. That's because sometimes it's easiest to write your summary after you've covered all the other details.

A great summary is one of the key features of a business plan. It serves as an overview of your entire business and the elements surrounding it.

Be sure to outline succinctly the 5 "W"s (Who, What, Why, When, Where) as well as the mission statement . Think about why you started the business along with where you would like it to be in the future, how will you get there? Your mission statement is the start of creating a culture that people in your organisation will live and work by.

This section should contain details of things such as your goals and the customers you will service. What are the products and services you will offer to your customers? You'll need to provide an overview of them and how they will address customers' needs and wants?

You've come up with this great business idea , but how will it do in the market? Or, more importantly, what is the market for it? How well do you know the market? What does a typical buyer look like, what is their income level? Does the business have the hallmarks of disruptive innovation ?

This is the time to research and determine who your target market is and ask specific questions that relate to your product or service. Put you idea to the test. What have others done before you and what can you do differently and better? Analyse what information you've uncovered and outline it's potential impact in your plan.

Create a detailed list of your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. This needs to be done with an open and honest approach, keep emotions out of it, focus on being objective when analysing your business and those of your competitors.

Any strengths you uncover will represent internal, positive factors in your business that are within your control. Weaknesses are also internal, but are negative factors that need to be improved.

Both opportunities and threats are external factors. While opportunities will potentially positively impact on your business, threats represent negative factors beyond your control. For example, are there high barriers to entering the market? Does a competitor have the market cornered due to brand loyal customers? These could harm your enterprise, so you need to strategise for it in your plan.

5. The management team and personnel

Who will run the business, who are the directors in the business? What are the skills of the management team and how do their different responsibilities make maximum use of their abilities. What is the chain of command in terms of decision making?

Also use this section to identify how the management team, and taking on employees will help maximise strengths, while addressing identified weaknesses to help improve the business.

Finally, which of the UK's business structures will you choose to operate through?

  • Limited company
  • Partnership
  • Limited liability partnership

In this section you need to detail what will be produced and how it will be sold. You should  explain how your product or service will meet a particular need in the marketplace, and how you'll get customers returning to make repeat purchases. Repeat custom is after all the lifeblood of many a good business.

Who will you rely on, in terms of suppliers, to help you assemble your products? What intellectual property, patents or copyright do you own, or might you be at risk of potentially infringing?

What is the branding to your business? What are the key messages you want to communicate with your target market and how will you go about reaching them? How will you achieve market share and at what cost in terms of your budget?

8. Let's talk money: A financial plan

Ideas are great, but how will you make them a reality and sustain a viable business. Creating a financial plan will give you the opportunity to address your financial concerns and talk money, think about start-up costs, financial projections , funding and investor pitches.

You'll need to list how much your start-up will cost, everything from stationary to leases should be outlined and balanced against your financial projections.

Don't fear change, your business plan isn't written in stone

It’s important to remember that your business plan isn’t written in stone. This is a document that you and your staff can improve and update as the business grows and changes. Your plan should be reviewed regularly.

Consider implementing a monthly review to track progress or make adjustments to your strategy. Accountability and motivation are key in making sure your goals are met, think about the people involved and what can you do to keep them inspired.

SEP IRA vs. Qualified Retirement Plan: Which Is Better for a Small Business?

The SEP IRA is a great starter plan for a small business because it is easy to set up and maintain. Also, it provides funding flexibility with discretionary contributions. But sometimes, a small business needs more from its employees’ retirement plan, and this greater need might be met with a qualified retirement plan , or QRP. But not all plan features carry the same weight. Business owners might need to give and take by choosing the features that meet their greatest needs and giving up those of lower importance. The following are some features to consider.

This article is the third in a series that explains the features and benefits of popular retirement plans that small businesses can offer at low cost and the key questions business owners must answer to determine the most suitable.

Should Employees Share in Funding Their Retirement?

If an employer wants employees to share in the funding of their retirement accounts, the employer must choose a plan with a salary-deferral feature.

Since only employer contributions are allowed for SEP IRAs, an employer must choose a 401(k) plan to allow participants to make salary-deferral contributions to their accounts.

Participants may defer 100% of compensation up to $22,500 (the limit for 2023) to their 401(k) account. Participants age 50 and older as of the end of the year may make catch-up contributions of up to $7,500 (2023 limit) in addition to their regular salary-deferral contributions. These salary-deferral contributions can be made on a pretax basis, an aftertax basis to a designated Roth account available under the plan, or split between both.

Suitability Planning Tip: Savings incentive match plans for employees, or Simple IRAs, also allow salary-deferral contributions, allowing employees to defer 100% of their compensation up to $15,500 (2023 limit). Participants who are age 50 and older as of the end of the year may make catch-up contributions of up to $3,500 (2023 limit). An employer that places a high value on employees making salary-deferral contributions should compare a 401(k) with a Simple IRA. The Simple IRA contribution limits are lower but so are the administrative costs.

Which Plan Allows for the Highest Contribution Limits

The maximum contribution amount that may be made to an employee’s SEP IRA is 25% of the employee’s wages.

For 2023, the maximum for a QRP 2023 is:

  • For a defined-contribution plan, the lesser of (a) 100% of the employee’s compensation or (b) $66,000.
  • For a defined-benefit pension plan, the amount needed to provide an annual benefit no larger than (a) $245,000 or (b) 100% of the participant’s average compensation for the highest three consecutive calendar years, whichever is less.

Using the national average salary of $57,200 per year, the maximum contributions for W-2 wage earners based on the type of retirement plan is:

Suitability Planning Tip : Calculate the contribution amount for all employees. This calculation will help to determine how much each employee may contribute and how much the employer would be required to contribute to the plan.

Consideration should also be given to the fact that SEP IRA contributions are discretionary, allowing the employer to choose whether to make contributions for a year. Employer contributions to pension plans are mandatory but can be discretionary for profit-sharing plans depending on how the plan is designed.

A discretionary feature is a saving grace for years when an employer cannot afford to make contributions.

Is a Vesting Schedule an Option?

A vesting schedule can help to reduce short-time employee turnover, thus saving on the cost of training new hires. See the Using a Vesting Schedule section in “ How Retirement Plans Can Aid Your Client’s Small-Business Growth .”

Contributions to SEP IRAs are always immediately vested, which allows employees to withdraw those amounts at any time.

Employer contributions to a QRP can be subject to a vesting schedule.

Loans vs. Distributions

Withdrawals (distributions) may be made from QRPs only by employees who experience a qualifying event as defined by the plan’s terms. This restriction can be concerning for participants who need access to their savings during financially challenging times. However, a QRP can include a loan provision, allowing participants to borrow the lesser of $50,000 or (generally) 50% of the employee’s vested account balance. Loans may generally be repaid according to an amortization schedule within five years, or longer if the loan is used to purchase or build a primary residence for the participant.

Loans may not be made from SEP IRAs. However, participants may make distributions at any time.

If eligible, distribution amounts can be rolled over to an eligible retirement plan within 60 days of receipt, or longer if the account owner qualifies for a waiver of the 60-day deadline.

Administrative Costs and Responsibilities

A SEP IRA can be established by completing IRS Model Form 5305-SEP , which asks the employer only five questions. QRPs are more complex and require more information. Most financial institutions simplify the setup process by providing off-the-shelf kits for establishing and amending plans.

Administrative responsibilities for a SEP IRA can be limited to communicating the features, eligibility requirements, and plan contribution amounts, and operational requirements to employees. On the other hand, QRPs require nondiscrimination and top-heavy testing for plans that cover employees who are not highly compensated—in addition to those that apply to SEP IRAs.

QRPs must file Form 5500 Annual Return/Report of Employee Benefit Plan each year unless the QRP is a nonterminating plan that covers only the business owner and has a balance of $250,000 or less. Form 5500 is not filed for SEP IRAs.

For QRPs, other administrative requirements must be considered.

Choosing a Plan and Keeping Compliance

A business owner should work with an advisor to get a recommendation based on a suitability assessment. The assessment results should show the plan that fits based on the employer’s most desired features.

A reassessment should be done periodically to determine if the employer should switch to a different retirement plan.

An employer must ensure that its retirement plan maintains compliance with applicable requirements. Working with a plan administrator is an ideal compliance solution, but those who want to handle the process themselves may use the checklists provided by the IRS .

Coordinating content around product launches and promotional campaigns can garner more sales. You can add content ideas to your calendar that warm your audience up to your offer. 

For instance, a fitness coach selling coaching services may want to write an article explaining the benefits of working with a coach instead of embarking on your fitness journey alone. Another article can detail how to take the DIY route while offering resources and suggesting that the reader jumps on a strategy call with you. 

It’s more difficult to connect your content with your brand if you come up with content ideas on a whim and guess what readers want. A content calendar gives you time to map out your content production for the next few months.

7 Steps to create a content calendar

A content calendar offers several advantages, but it can feel overwhelming for someone who is getting started. This 7-step process simplifies the process and can help you craft a solid calendar for your business.

Businesses produce content with the hopes of getting more leads, attracting clients, and boosting revenue. Content itself doesn’t achieve that goal, but it is a means to an end.

Business owners should establish their core offerings before working on a content calendar. For instance, you may have a book, training course, service, and other offers, but it’s important to prioritize your most profitable offers.

Map out any promotional dates in your content calendar where you want to double down on a product launch, service, discount, or another offer. Some businesses run monthly promotions while others space them out further. It depends on your business, but you should know the dates of those promotions before getting started.

Business owners can use Google Calendar, Excel, and other tools to create calendar templates. A template should give you enough space to write down content ideas and how you plan to promote a piece of content. These templates are free, and once you have a template that you like, you can continue to use it each month.

You have the calendar template and know when you plan on promoting your core offers. The next step is to list content ideas that warm up prospects. It’s similar to the fitness example from earlier where a coach writes an article that covers why you may want to work with a fitness coach and another article that covers the DIY side.

You’ll have to do this for your business, but don’t stop at two ideas. During a brain dump, it’s good to spend 15-30 minutes listing content ideas that bring prospects along the customer journey. Business owners should come up with at least 10 content ideas, but it’s even better if you can come up with 20-30 ideas. That way, you can choose from the best ones and get started on them.

A content marketing strategy can involve several content formats, but you don’t have to use them all. Articles, videos, podcasts, shorts, and images are some of the content formats you can incorporate into your calendar. 

Focusing on what works best for your business can help you avoid spreading yourself too thin. Some people and businesses use all of these content formats but also have deeper budgets. 

Knowing your strengths as a content creator and reviewing your analytics can help you decide which content formats to prioritize in your calendar. Once you know the content formats and have your ideas listed, you can fill out your calendar.

Once you have your ideas laid out on your content calendar, the next step is to create your core content. This step involves writing articles, recording videos, and creating podcast episodes. You can choose as many or as few formats as you desire for this step.

It’s good to get ahead of your production schedule if you can, and content batching is a great way to do it.   • Post in three Facebook Groups about your content piece 1-2 weeks after publication

39K Student Loan Borrowers Just Got Forgiveness. Here’s How To Get in Line

The Education Department is extending a key student loan forgiveness deadline and delaying the relief rollout.

Borrowers now have through June 30 to consolidate certain types of federal student loans to qualify for the one-time income-driven repayment (IDR) account adjustment , which counts more past periods of repayment toward IDR forgiveness. The account adjustment will be fully implemented in borrowers’ accounts sometime in September.

So far, the Education Department has approved roughly $51 billion in IDR account adjustment forgiveness for more than one million borrowers — including a recent wave of $1.9 billion in forgiveness for 39,200 longtime borrowers, announced on May 22.

The new consolidation deadline lengthens the program’s timeline by two months. Previously, the consolidation deadline was April 30, and the account adjustment was slated to wrap up by July 1.

“The department is working swiftly to ensure borrowers get credit for every month they’ve rightfully earned toward forgiveness,” U.S. Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal said in a statement.

Though the delay means a second chance for borrowers who didn’t consolidate by the previous deadline, it may also mean the Education Department is buying itself some time to finish implementing the forgiveness, says Karen McCarthy, vice president of public policy and federal relations at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.

“They don't expect to finish their work as early as they thought they were, so the window to apply to consolidate into the [direct loan] program has now been extended a little bit as well,” McCarthy says.

These types of loans require consolidation by June 30 to qualify for the maximum benefits of the IDR account adjustment:

Commercially held FFELP loans . (These are part of the Federal Family Education Loan Program; most federal student loans taken out prior to 2010 fall into this category.)

Federally held FFELP loans, but only if you're working toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) . 

Perkins loans . 

HEAL loans .

Parent PLUS loans in repayment for less than 25 years (or 10 years, if eligible for PSLF). 

Direct loans with different past payment counts.

If your loans aren’t on this list, you likely don’t need to take action to benefit from the IDR account adjustment — you’ll automatically get forgiveness either by the end of September, or sooner than you otherwise would.

“Without this extension, millions of borrowers who could benefit from the IDR account adjustment will be cut off from relief. For many, this extension could make the difference between being debt-free and years of additional payments,” says Persis Yu, deputy executive director and managing counsel at the Student Borrower Protection Center, a nonprofit organization that advocates for student debt relief.

Don’t count on another deadline extension. If you need to consolidate your loans to benefit from the IDR account adjustment, here’s how to do it by June 30.

Check your loan types

Confirm which types of loans you have before attempting to consolidate.

“The really challenging part for some borrowers is the first step in identifying all of the loans that you want to be included in the consolidation and who those loan holders are,” McCarthy says.

To start that first step, log in to your StudentAid.gov account. Once logged in, select “loan breakdown” from your dashboard to see a list of your loans, along with their names and servicers. If the loan says “Direct,” it’s a direct loan. If you have a different loan type, “FFELP,” “Perkins” or “HEAL” may be in the name. You can also see how long you’ve been paying your loans, and how much you owe.

If your servicer name starts with “Dept. of Ed” or “Default Management Collection System,” your FFELP loans are held by the government — not a commercial lender — so you don’t have to consolidate, unless you’re pursuing PSLF.

If your FFELP loans do not include either of those terms, they are commercially held and you must apply to consolidate by June 30 to get credit for IDR forgiveness.

Complete the consolidation application

The free consolidation application is available online at StudentAid.gov/loan-consolidation . When logged in, this online form will automatically populate most borrowers’ contact and loan information. Confirm accuracy. Next, you’ll be prompted to:

Select which federal loans you want to consolidate. 

Preview the amount of your new direct consolidation loan and its interest rate. 

Choose a repayment plan, even if you’ll be eligible for forgiveness. (If you aren’t eligible for forgiveness now, you’ll want to sign up for an IDR plan going forward to keep earning credit toward forgiveness. The form will direct you to the IDR application, which requires you to input or recertify your income information.) 

Choose a federal student loan servicer for your consolidation loan.

Provide contact information for two references who can be contacted if the Education Department is unable to reach you. 

The entire process can take less than 30 minutes, and it does not need to be completed in one sitting. For assistance or to apply for consolidation over the phone, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 800-433-3243.

The loans you consolidate will be paid off and replaced with a single “direct consolidation loan.” The Education Department says most consolidation loans are disbursed to borrowers within 60 days of applying.

“It does take a little bit of time for the consolidation to go through,” McCarthy says. “Make sure that you understand that it will take some time, because the Department of Ed is literally paying off your previous loans.”

After consolidation, your payment count may temporarily show as zero in your StudentAid.gov account. Don’t worry: Your payment count will be accurately updated by September.

Sign up for an IDR plan if you don’t get forgiveness

If you’ve been in repayment long enough to qualify for IDR forgiveness, and you consolidate if needed, your remaining balance will be erased by the end of September and you won’t have to make further student loan payments.

Generally, you must have the following repayment history to qualify for forgiveness under the IDR account adjustment:

At least 10 years of repayment, if you qualify for PSLF. 

At least 20 years of repayment, if you have undergraduate loans only.

At least 25 years of repayment, if you have loans for graduate school or parent PLUS loans. 

You could also get forgiveness after 10 years of repayment if you originally borrowed $12,000 or less, as a result of the new IDR plan, called SAVE . You must enroll in SAVE to qualify for this accelerated forgiveness.

Even if you think you’ll reach forgiveness after the adjustment in September, it’s a good idea to make payments in the meantime. Any overpayments made after consolidation will be refunded.

If you haven’t spent the required amount of time in repayment, you must enroll in an IDR plan, like SAVE, to continue making progress toward IDR forgiveness. You’ll be much closer to forgiveness after the account adjustment, because it will count more past repayment periods — including forbearances and payments not made on an IDR plan — toward the time needed to earn IDR forgiveness.

Know the implications of consolidation

Consolidation is irreversible, so consider the pros and cons of consolidation before taking this action. Outside of the IDR account adjustment, consolidating certain types of loans can open the door to PSLF and IDR plans that can shrink your monthly bills. It can also simplify your payments if you have loans with multiple servicers. On the other hand, the process could lengthen your repayment period, which could increase the amount of interest you pay over time.

The following loan types require additional considerations, ahead of the June 30 consolidation application deadline.

Perkins loans

Think twice before consolidating your Perkins loans if you’re eligible for Perkins loan cancellation , which can forgive your debt if you work a public service job for at least four to seven years — much faster than PSLF or IDR.

The government shuttered the Health Education Assistance Loan (HEAL) Program in 1998, but some borrowers are still repaying old HEAL debt. Unconsolidated HEAL loans aren’t eligible for IDR plans or the account adjustment.

If you consolidate a HEAL loan by June 30, your new consolidation loan will get credit toward IDR forgiveness for the oldest non-HEAL loan it includes.

If you have HEAL loans only, you should still consolidate them if you want to access IDR plans or PSLF. After consolidation, your IDR forgiveness clock will start at zero.

Parent PLUS loans

If you’ve been repaying parent PLUS loans for at least 25 years (or 10 years if you, the parent, are eligible for PSLF), you should automatically get forgiveness of your remaining debt under the IDR account adjustment. You don’t need to consolidate.

If you’ve been in repayment for close to 25 years, but you’re not there yet, consolidate by June 30 to get IDR credit for past periods of repayment for the oldest underlying loan. To keep making progress toward forgiveness, you must enroll in the Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) plan, which is the only IDR option for consolidation loans containing parent PLUS loans.

Consider consolidation carefully if you’re far from the 25-year finish line; the ICR plan could increase your monthly bills. Use the Education Department’s loan simulator to gauge different repayment scenarios.

Microsoft continues to move forward with its twice-yearly release wave plans for its business applications lineup, and Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management customers must follow those plans carefully as they roll out during the four planned service updates per year. Microsoft representatives shared updates with DynamicsCon Live 2024 attendees on some of the key changes coming in the latest release wave and the upcoming service update periods that will bring both new features and deprecations that some customers will need to plan for.

Dynamics 365 Finance: Business Performance, invoice, and more

Microsoft showed off 50 new and improved features of D365 Finance, coming in 2024 release wave 1 at the event. The area of Business Performance Planning, or BPP, refers to features of financial planning and analytics in the product that aim to improve data management and visualization. Those reports and dashboards can be published via Power BI for reporting with granular controls for who gets access to what information. 

BPP now comes with reports and templates out of the box that users can use or modify when they want to upload data from a range of sources including accounting and other enterprise systems or even spreadsheets. 

“Individual users … can do what-if analysis in those reports,” explained Microsoft principal program manager Rachel Profitt in a roadmap session at the event. “The out of the box reports that we have provided so far with business performance analytics include a balance sheet, a budgets versus actual financial performance, GL dimension details, GL transaction details and profit and loss statements.”

Security remains a key element of deploying reports, and the BPP capabilities include steps that allow administrators to secure reports and data so they can be shared with the right users and groups.

Among the dozens of feature enhancements coming Finance in this release wave, Profitt discussed the new vendor invoice automation workspace, which provides a new way of finding and managing the processing of all types of invoices. Within the workspace, AP teams can see approval status, track any failed items, and understand the formats coming in. Other invoice automation improvements include the ability to use custom models for invoice recognition, the ability to add a PO’s requester and orderer as the invoice’s approver, and improved document type settings for transferred invoice documents from invoice capture.

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management: Features, deprecations, and service update changes

Within Microsoft’s broader cadence of two release waves per year, the D365 Supply Chain Management team has recently changed their update model to include four updates per year for their cloud customers, and they can only pause one update, meaning they must take the subsequent one.
