Watching movies is a part of almost everyone’s life. They entertain us, teach us lessons, and even help us socialize by giving us topics to talk about with others. As long as movies have been produced, everyone has patronized them.  Essays about movies  are a great way to learn all about the meaning behind the picture.

Cinema is an art form in itself. The lighting, camera work, and acting in the most widely acclaimed movies are worthy of praise. Furthermore, a movie can be used to send a message, often discussing issues in contemporary society. Movies are entertaining, but more importantly, they are works of art. “Films encourage us to take action. Our favourite characters, superheroes, teach us life lessons. They give us ideas and inspiration to do everything for the better instead of just sitting around, waiting for things to go their way. Films about famous personalities are the perfect way to affect social behaviour positively. Films are a source of knowledge. They can help learn what’s in the trend, find out more about ancient times, or fill out some knowledge gaps.”

In this movie essay, Rathod gives readers three ways watching movies can positively affect us. Movie writers, producers, and directors use their platform to teach viewers life skills, the importance of education, and the contrast between good and evil. Watching movies can also help us improve critical thinking, according to Briggs. Not only do movies entertain us, but they also have many educational benefits. “Many people involving children and adults can effect with their sleeping disturbance and anxiety. Myths, non-realistic, fairy tales could respond differently with being in the real world. Horror movies bring a lot of excitement and entertainment among you and your family. Horror movies can cause physical behavior changes in a person by watching the films. The results of watching horror movies shows that is has really effect people whether you’re an adult, teens, and most likely happens during your childhood.”

In his essay, Briggs acknowledges why people enjoy horror movies so much but warns of their adverse effects on viewers. Most commonly, they cause viewers nightmares, which may cause anxiety and sleep disorders. He focuses on the films’ effects on children, whose more sensitive, less developed brains may respond with worse symptoms, including major trauma. The films can affect all people negatively, but children are the most affected.

“This was the message of Casablanca in late 1942. It was the ideal opportunity for America to utilize its muscles and enter the battle. America was to end up the hesitant gatekeeper of the entire world. The characters of Casablanca, similar to the youthful Americans of the 1960s who stick headed the challenge development, are ‘genuine Americans’ lost in a hostile region, battling to open up another reality.”

In this essay, the author discusses the 1942 film  Casablanca , which is said to be the greatest movie ever made, and explains why it has gotten this reputation. To an extent, the film’s storyline, acting, and even relatability (it was set during World War II) allowed it to shine from its release until the present. It invokes feelings of bravery, passion, and nostalgia, which is why many love the movie. You can also check out these  books about adaption .

4.   Dune Review: An Old Story Reshaped For The New 2021 Audience by Oren Cohen

“Lady Jessica is a powerful woman in the original book, yet her interactions with Paul diminish her as he thinks of her as slow of thought. Something we don’t like to see in 2021 — and for a good reason. Every book is a product of its time, and every great storyteller knows how to adapt an old story to a new audience. I believe Villeneuve received a lot of hate from diehard Dune fans for making these changes, but I fully support him.”

Like the previous essay, Cohen reviews a film, in this case, Denis Villeneuve’s  Dune , released in 2021. He praises the film, writing about its accurate portrayal of the epic’s vast, dramatic scale, music, and, interestingly, its ability to portray the characters in a way more palatable to contemporary audiences while staying somewhat faithful to the author’s original vision. Cohen enjoyed the movie thoroughly, saying that the movie did the book justice.

“Those travelers added around 630 million New Zealand dollars ($437 million) to the country’s economy in 2019 alone, the tourism authority told CNBC. A survey by the tourism board, however, showed that almost one in five Kiwis are worried that the country attracts too many tourists. Overcrowding at tourist spots, lack of infrastructure, road congestion and environmental damage are creating tension between locals and visitors, according to a 2019 report by Tourism New Zealand.”

The locations where successful movies are filmed often become tourist destinations for fans of those movies. Goel writes about how “film tourism” affects the residents of popular filming locations. The environment is sometimes damaged, and the locals are caught off guard. Though this is not always the case, film tourism is detrimental to the residents and ecosystem of these locations. 6. Moonage Daydream:  “Who Is He? What Is He?” by Jonathan Romney

“Right from the start, Brett Morgen’s  Moonage Daydream  (2022) catches us off guard. It begins with an epigraph musing on Friedrich Nietzsche’s proclamation that “God is dead,” then takes us into deep space and onto the surface of the moon. It then unleashes an image storm of rockets, robots, and star-gazers, and rapid-fire fragments of early silent cinema, 1920s science fiction, fifties cartoons, and sixties and seventies newsreel footage, before lingering on a close-up of glittery varnish on fingernails.”

Moonage Daydream  is a feature film containing never-before-seen footage of David Bowie. In this essay, Romney delves into the process behind creating the movie and how the footage was captured. It also looks at the director’s approach to creating a structured and cohesive film, which took over two years to plan. This essay looks at how Bowie’s essence was captured and preserved in this movie while displaying the intricacies of his mind.

7. La Bamba:  American Dreaming, Chicano Style by Yolanda Machado

“A traumatic memory, awash in hazy neutral tones, arising as a nightmare. Santo & Johnny’s mournful “Sleep Walk” playing. A sudden death, foreshadowing the passing of a star far too young. The opening sequence of Luis Valdez’s  La Bamba  (1987) feels like it could be from another film—what follows is largely a celebration of life and music.”

La Bamba  is a well-known movie about a teenage Mexican migrant who became a rock ‘n’ roll star. His rise to fame is filled with difficult social dynamics, and the star tragically dies in a plane crash at a young age. In this essay, Machado looks at how the tragic death of the star is presented to the viewer, foreshadowing the passing of the young star before flashing back to the beginning of the star’s career. Machado analyses the storyline and directing style, commenting on the detailed depiction of the young star’s life. It’s an in-depth essay that covers everything from plot to writing style to direction.

5 Prompts for Essays About Movies

Simple and straightforward, write about your favorite movie. Explain its premise, characters, and plot, and elaborate on some of the driving messages and themes behind the film. You should also explain why you enjoy the movie so much: what impact does it have on you? Finally, answer this question in your own words for an engaging piece of writing.

From horror to romance, movies can fall into many categories. Choose one of the main genres in cinema and discuss the characteristics of movies under that category. Explain prevalent themes, symbols, and motifs, and give examples of movies belonging to your chosen genre. For example, horror movies often have underlying themes such as mental health issues, trauma, and relationships falling apart.

Without a doubt, special effects in movies have improved drastically. Both practical and computer-generated effects produce outstanding, detailed effects to depict situations most would consider unfathomable, such as the vast space battles of the  Star Wars  movies. Write about the development of special effects over the years, citing evidence to support your writing. Be sure to detail key highlights in the history of special effects.

Movies are always made to be appreciated by viewers, but whether or not they enjoy them varies, depending on their preferences. In your essay, write about what you look for in a “good” movie in terms of plot, characters, dialogue, or anything else. You need not go too in-depth but explain your answers adequately. In your opinion, you can use your favorite movie as an example by writing about the key characteristics that make it a great movie.

Essays About Movies: The evolution of movies

From the silent black-and-white movies of the early 1900s to the vivid, high-definition movies of today, times have changed concerning movies. Write about how the film industry has improved over time. If this topic seems too broad, feel free to focus on one aspect, such as cinematography, themes, or acting.

Why We Watch Movies

The ritual of cinema adds to its appeal..

Posted June 21, 2021 | Reviewed by Davia Sills

It is illuminating to consider how religion and belief have been transformed into seemingly secular activities in the modern world. One way to approach this is to identify our rituals, to think about what people do at night, in the darkness beyond the demands of labor and domestic life. We are thus led to the spaces we set aside for communal behaviors that are unique from prosaic life. These sacred spaces are separate from the everyday, the profane. As Émile Durkheim wrote over a hundred years ago, sacred spaces are those in which powerful, transformative events take place for individuals as part of a collective.

Rituals, like a sacrifice, occur in the enclosed space of the ritual arena. In these spaces, different rules apply. They bring about different ways of relating to the community, to ancestors, time, and fundamental notions of meaning and significance. In this essay, I claim cinema is such a sacred space and discuss how and why it works so effectively.

i love watching movies essay

Movies and the power of ritual

Myth and ritual are central to how every society collates, creates, and perpetuates the core of its significances, values, aspirations, origins, goals , and ethical lineaments. Over the last 80 years, cinema has become a reliable, effective medium for telling stories. In other words, cinema is a preeminent mode for the generation of participation in the myths of our times. The emotional intensity of the ritual, of contact with mythology, is what draws belief, salience, and importance into the encounter.

In movies , the scale of human action takes on mythic proportions. Not only in size but also in terms of the importance of gesture, storyline, character, emotions, settings, and scenes. Archetypal characters bring to life finely-wrought scripts wherein storylines illustrate moral reflections, aspirational narratives, and the dramatization of historical events. The finely selected dialogue in movies is so crucial that it resembles the manifest content of dialogue in dreams . Freud of course claimed that every word uttered in a dream is of utmost importance since the medium of dreams is visual, and thus any words that sneak through the censor must be vital.

The art of filmmaking is extremely difficult; one look at the credits tells you hundreds of people and hundreds of thousands of dollars have gone into any given movie. The layers of censors from investors to editors to distribution companies (and so many more) make every scene highly improbable. Relative to the stories of all the people in the theater and the people who made the film, the production necessary to make a film demonstrates that it functions at a higher level of proportionality. Granted, not all movies are effective and worthy of the treatment I describe here, but many are—those are the movies to which I apply these reflections.

It is also the atmosphere of cinema that creates a form of ritual space. The movie theater, a room with no windows suffused with darkness but for the light burning through translucent celluloid. We sit among strangers with whom we share emotional reactions to shared events. By sharing reactions, we share and reinforce a cultural lens.

The communal setting of the ritual arena of theater itself elevates the event. It confirms us as a community and builds our shared history and interpretation of reality out further and further. Light flickers on the screen, which is 45 to 65 feet wide and as tall as 30 feet. Cinema is larger than life; that is how it can represent life to us in a mimetic ritual of drama . We understand something about ourselves by becoming other, by being taken in by the story and coming out the other end in a slightly different form.

Then there is the narrative, the aesthetic charm poured into the dramatic form. That distillation of life into moments, sieved into distinct tales of definite memorability. The overwhelmingly melodramatic format of the journey, the love triangle, the conflict, etc., pushes us to identify with the characters. We are brought into an empathetic mood. Some movies bring us into the community of the characters such that plot development resembles nothing so much as gossip.

Time is transformed in the cinematic state; for us, it is an escape , a vacation, a portal out of the world and the uncontrollable nature of time. The liminality of being out of time in a dark room doing nothing allows for separation from so much that binds us. We are freed from speaking, from the dense maze of active interactions that make up public life. Here we are voyeurs who participate emotionally even when nothing is asked of us. The filmmaker does it all: through montage, a story comes together; through casting, we are directed to recognize characters; through lighting and sound, we are immersed in environments. All we have to do is keep our eyes and ears open. If we give our attention , the screen creates the illusion of four dimensions. It offers them to us; it takes them all up and drags us in its wake.

i love watching movies essay

After the liminal space of the ritual of cinema, we walk out of the room discombobulated, sensitive to light and motion. We reaggregate ourselves after having become part of a different reality. We reflect upon what we saw and heard, in groups or in internal dialogue. The movie becomes part of our memory ; sometimes we get confused about whether the stories we remember come from cinema or stories we’ve heard about people. We take the movie in through the sacred space of the theater and leave with its messages.

When the ritual is over, when the crow and the raven are silent, we return to each other with stories and characters, memories of events that never happened. We want to share them further; we recommend movies, talk about their virtues and failures, and interleave them into our memories of all the other movies and stories we have lived through. The myth has been received, the experience has become a part of us.

Why Do We Love the Movies?

There are few hobbies as popular as watching a movie. Whether you prefer to Netflix and chill or see a film on the big screen, movies have been a large part of our personal and social lives since they were invented. Let us investigate what truly contributes to their appeal.

Part of Our Evolution

Asking why we love entertainment is similar to asking why we love ice cream and pizza. Just like food that is laden with sugar, salt, or fat, entertainment stimulates our most basic neurological hardware. Even when our ancestors were living in caves, they probably entertained themselves and the people around them with drawings and storytelling.

The way entertainment ties in with our cognitive neuroscience may have contributed to how humans have endured so well through the ages. Stories like ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ engaged our innate ability to imagine ourselves in other people’s shoes. This understanding, in turn, helped us respond to our environment in a way that enabled our species to survive.

While gene transfer is limited to once per generation, cultural anecdotes and practices can be transferred multiple times. The influence of entertainment can spread much further and faster than genetic evolution. Therefore, songs, plays, stories, and movies have not only amused us but allowed our species to teach each other how to adapt and thrive.

An Appealing Escape

Entertainment is a way for us to escape an overwhelming world. Watching movies allows us to switch off from the troubles that weigh on our minds and be transported to another reality. A light-hearted movie can make us laugh and feel joy; a romantic movie can alleviate loneliness; an exciting movie can get our adrenalin pumping.

Movies allow us to view the world from a variety of different perspectives. You could be an ant, a mob boss, or a superhero. This bevy of characters ignites our imaginations and opens our minds to infinite possibilities and fantasies. Through watching movies, we can learn about foreign cultures, meet intriguing people, and visit far-flung and exotic places.

Our love for movies is very rarely solely about avoiding real life, though. Most movies commonly have themes that reflect reality. Even disaster or post-apocalyptic movies are fundamentally about the traits that make us human. Hence, our attraction toward movies may not be about leaving reality as much as it is about seeking out a clearer picture of humanity.

Representation & Inspiration

While movies are a fantastic avenue for escapism, they can also provide important representation. The characters and circumstances that movies feature often reflect the general sentiments of society at large. As minority performers are getting more airtime and foreign-language movies are entering the mainstream, the world is turning towards diversity.

When ‘Black Panther’ came out in 2018, its proud and purposeful depiction of African culture was a critical moment in cinema. Black people and women were not cast as villains, hoodlums, sidekicks, or accessories. They were strong, intelligent, kind, and powerful characters—things that are obviously true in real life but not shown enough on screen.

For children and teenagers who were watching and for colored people who had been played down in all aspects of society, this representation was inspiring. The same applies to movies about single mums, gay lovers, struggling immigrants, or unruly retirees. Being seen and centered in an honest and positive light reminds them that they matter too.

Whether we believe that art imitates life or life imitates art, there is no doubt that changes on the big screen are a catalyst for the same in the real world. As our movie screens continue to become more diverse and inclusive, we are given hope that we are building a world where people of color and minority groups are seen, respected, and celebrated.

Fantasies Personified

We love movies so much that performers who star in them are frequently elevated to celebrity status. This is a throwback to primitive times when the actors in mythical stories were thought to retain certain traits of the spirits or deities that they portrayed. Today, we still affix larger-than-life personas to performers and treat them as cultural icons.

The cult of personality is nothing new in human society. Millions of people follow Bigg Boss Tamil to learn about the latest movies and celebrity gossip. The characters that actors play are painstakingly designed to be exceptionally attractive or interestingly flawed. So, it is no wonder that many people idolize the actors, even after the movie is over.

Unless you are bordering on obsession, there are no harmful effects to fandom. In fact, being a fan of a performer can increase your enjoyment of their movies. Many movies become box office hits simply because of the famous actors on the billing. With so much ugliness in life, surely a bit of eye candy should not be begrudged.

Movies are fun. They take us away from our everyday lives and remind us that there is a world out there that is much bigger and more fascinating than we think. Movies can inspire us to heroism or make the mundane magical. And that is why we love them.

Step By Step Guide to Writing an Essay on Film

By Film Threat Staff | December 29, 2021

Writing an essay about a film sounds like a fun assignment to do. As part of the assignment, you get to watch the movie and write an analytical essay about your impressions. However, you will soon find that you’re staring at an empty sheet of paper or computer screen with no idea what to write, how to start writing your essay, or the essential points that need to be covered and analyzed. As an  essay writing service proves, watching the movie countless times isn’t all there is to write a film analysis essay. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you with an essay service :

i love watching movies essay

1. Watch the Movie

This is the obvious starting point, but surprisingly many students skip this step. It doesn’t matter if you’ve watched the movie twice before. If you’re asked to write an essay about it, you need to watch it again. Watching the film again allows you to pay more attention to specific elements to help you write an in-depth analysis about it.

Watching the movie is crucial because it helps you not specific parts of the movie that can be used as illustrations and examples in your essay. You’re also going to explore and analyze the movie theme within your structured plan. Some of the critical elements that you have to look out for while watching the movie that may be crucial for your essay are:

  • Key plot moments
  • Editing style
  • Stylistic elements
  • Scenario execution
  • Musical elements

2. Introduction

Your introduction will contain essential information about the film, such as the title, release date, director’s name, etc. This familiarizes the reader with the movie’s primary background information. In addition, researching the filmmaker may be crucial for your essay because it may help you discover valuable insights for your film analysis.

The introduction should also mention the movie’s central theme and explain why you think it was made that way.

Do not forget to include your thesis statement, which explains your focus on the movie.

3. Write a Summary

According to an  essay writing service  providing students   help with essays , a movie summary comes after the introduction. It includes the film’s basic premise, but it doesn’t have to reveal too many details about the film. It’s a summary, after all. Write the summary like your readers have not heard about the movie before, so you can mention the most basic plots but assume you have minimal time so you won’t be going into great details.

i love watching movies essay

4. Write Your Analysis

This is the central part of the essay in which you analyze the movie critically and state your impressions about the film. Ensure to support your claims with relevant materials from the movie.

There are also several creative elements in a movie that are connected to make the film a whole. You must pay attention to these elements while watching the movie and analyze them in this part of the essay.

In this, you are looking out for the dialogs, character development, completion of scenes, and logical event sequences in the film to analyze.

Ensure you try to understand the logic behind events in the film and the actor’s motives to explain the scenario better.

The responsibility of different parts of the movie, such as plan selection and scenario execution, falls on the director. So, your analysis here focuses on how the director realized the script compared to his other movies. Understanding the director’s style of directing may be crucial to coming up with a conclusion relevant to your analysis and thesis.

The casting of a film is a significant element to consider in your essay. Without a great actor, the scriptwriter and director can’t bring their ideas to life. So, watch the actor’s acting and determine if they portrayed the character effectively and if their acting aligns with the film’s main idea.

  • Musical element

A movie’s musical element enhances some of the sceneries or actions in the film and sets the mood. It has a massive impact on the movie, so it’s an essential element to analyze in your essay.

  • Visual elements

This includes special effects, make-up, costumes, etc., which significantly impact the film. These elements must reflect the film’s atmosphere. It is even more crucial for historical movies since it has to be specific about an era.

Ensure to analyze elements relevant to your thesis statement, so you don’t drift from your main point.

5. Conclusion

In concluding your essay, you have to summarize the primary concepts more convincingly to support your analysis. Finally, you may include a CTA for readers to watch or avoid the movie.

These are the crucial steps to take when writing an essay about a film . Knowing this beforehand prevents you from struggling to start writing after watching the movie.

Colourful collage of images from popular Oscars nominees including Bohemian Rhapsody, Black Panther and A Star is Born

Although streaming services provide on-demand entertainment that would've been unthinkable even a few years ago, seeing a film with friends remains an important ritual for many of us.

In fact, if you're like most Australians, you're spending more time in the cinema than you did 10 years ago.

It's not just that we're going to the movies more often. We're also just as interested in film culture as we've ever been. Online searches for "Oscars nominations" have almost doubled in the past ten years, Google Trends data shows.

So what's behind our ongoing love of movies? And is it just about being entertained, or do we get something deeper from the films we watch?

Going to the movies is not only about blowing off steam and having a laugh, explain the five experts interviewed for this article. Watching a film can also be a way of appreciating art (in a format more accessible to many of us than a gallery) and learning lessons about ourselves and the world.

Here's how.

Films help us learn

"We can learn a huge amount about certain moments in time or certain perceptions of moments in time" from watching films, says Adrian Danks, lecturer and associate dean of media in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University.

In other words, films can shape the way we're making sense of the world we're living in right now — regardless of the period they're set in.

Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, an Oscars Best Picture nominee about a black police officer who infiltrates the local Ku Klux Klan branch, for example, uses footage from Trump-era rallies at the film's conclusion, positioning the film as a meditation on contemporary politics.

"It's obviously a film set in the 1970s and it's able to bring some of those issues or relationships to connect to something that's happening in the current moment," says Dr Danks.

How "fiction can explore historic events in different ways to a documentary" is a theme that has underpinned the career of Robert Connolly, the Australian director whose credits include Romulus, My Father (2007) and Balibo (2009). The former uses the story of a father-son relationship to say "something about that period of time, the immigrant experience, in that part of Australia," he tells ABC Everyday.

Mr Connolly points to Oscars nominee Roma — another biographical memoir, in this case inspired by filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón's upbringing in 1970s Mexico City — as an example of "an amazing film" that tells a real-life story in different ways to a documentary. The movie follows the story of a family's relationship with its live-in maid to raise issues concerning race, culture and class that remain relevant today.

Films can drive social change

Films have always inspired social change due to their ability to teach viewers about experiences outside their own perspective, inspire empathy, and raise politically charged questions.

"That's kind of their role, to be provocative," says Dr Danks.

In 2004, The Day After Tomorrow helped increase awareness on climate change, Yale researchers found . The 2013 documentary Blackfish sparked public outcry that culminated in SeaWorld announcing the closure of its controversial orca show, and in Australia, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (1994) was pivotal in introducing LGBT themes to mainstream audiences.

More recently, calls for action on racial hegemony and sexual harassment in Hollywood (see: the #OscarsSoWhite and #TimesUp movements) sparked new debates about racial and gender equality.

This led to audiences becoming "much more attuned to a non-binary understanding of gender, of different sexualities, of the importance of diverse communities," explains Scott McQuire, a media and communications professor in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne.

A character in Black Panther looks courageously ahead

"There's now an awareness that if you want diverse stories told, it's not just about hiring different actors," says Dr McQuire.

"You've got to have a diverse group of writers and other people involved in production."

Oscars Best Picture nominee Black Panther reflects that progress. According to #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign , it "shatters the notion that black films can't travel".

What does all this mean for viewers?

When we buy a ticket to a film made by a diverse team, telling a story of a group of people not often represented on screen, we're encouraging Hollywood to continue making diverse films, says Dr McQuire.

Films help us process difficult life lessons

"Of course stress relief is a key function of films, and it's a major function for large audiences of blockbuster films," says Dr Danks.

But the therapeutic benefits of films can extend further.

Jillian Lynch, a psychotherapist based in Sydney, says films provide "an opportunity for viewers to recognise themselves in a character or some part of a film's narrative in order to undergo change".

Dr Lynch completed her PhD thesis on 'cinematherapy' — the practice of psychotherapists and psychologists using film in their clinical practices as an adjunct to therapy (a practice well known to anyone who's bought tickets to a comedy for some light relief or switched on a tragic love story to cry to after a relationship breakdown).

In other words, films can be "a safe space" where we can find alternative role models to identify with, and observe those characters' behaviours as they tackle challenges similar to our own.

Some viewers also find metaphors or symbols in films that help them grapple with major life challenges.

Dr Lynch's research found the symbol of the ring in Lord of the Rings, for example, has been used by recovering addicts as a way of understanding their struggle. (Frodo is "on that journey to destroy that ring, to overcome that ring, and he never does, he never overcomes it," one interview subject told Dr Lynch. "Even though he's able to get away from it, it still tempts him, it's still there.")

Films are (still) a social experience

Box office ticket sales are on the rise globally — and the fact we still pay $20 to go to the movies, despite the popularity of streaming services, shows just how important movie-going remains to our social lives, explains Dr McQuire.

"The other growth area has been what you'd call 'para-cinematic exhibition experiences' — movie events in bars, or rooftop cinemas," says Dr McQuire. "There is a real flourishing of this sort of thing."

A still from the film A Star is Born showing Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper

Even where we do stream movies at home, we increasingly find ways to connect with friends and communities over films — including on social media, online forums or pop culture websites.

Streaming has also facilitated some films to find a more mainstream audience than they otherwise would have.

"A film such as Roma, which otherwise might have been seen by considerably less people — through streaming is being seen by audiences from around the word. And that's certainly been critical to its popular recognition," says Dr Danks.

Films help us appreciate art

Films are often seen primarily as a form of entertainment, but it's worth remembering cinema is also an art form.

Because the medium can be understood as a "combinatory art form" (a type of art that combines other mediums) watching a movie can allow us to appreciate elements of, say, costume and sound design, architecture and theatre.

Simply watching a film can be a way of appreciating art and heightening your cultural awareness — in a format that is more accessible to many of us than a gallery.

Movies are simply "easier to take in" than books or other forms of storytelling, says Ian Davidson, president of the Australian Council of Film Societies.

When we watch a film, we're not just being entertained: We're also admiring something beautiful; learning about the world and ourselves; connecting with communities; and contributing to positive social change.

And, as Mr Davidson points out, "it's all over and done with in two hours."

To put it simply, film analysis implies watching a movie and then considering its characteristics : genre, structure, contextual context, etc. Film analysis is usually considered to be a form of rhetorical analysis . The key to success here is to formulate a clear and logical argument, supporting it with examples.

🚦 Film Analysis Essay Types

Since a film analysis essay resembles literature analysis, it makes sense that there are several ways to do it. Its types are not limited to the ones described here. Moreover, you are free to combine the approaches in your essay as well. Since your writing reflects your own opinion, there is no universal way to do it.

  • Semiotic analysis . If you’re using this approach, you are expected to interpret the film’s symbolism. You should look for any signs that may have a hidden meaning. Often, they reveal some character’s features. To make the task more manageable, you can try to find the objects or concepts that appear on the screen multiple times. What is the context they appear in? It might lead you to the hidden meaning of the symbols.
  • Narrative structure analysis . This type is quite similar to a typical literature guide. It includes looking into the film’s themes, plot, and motives. The analysis aims to identify three main elements: setup, confrontation, and resolution. You should find out whether the film follows this structure and what effect it creates. It will make the narrative structure analysis essay if you write about the theme and characters’ motivations as well.
  • Contextual analysis . Here, you would need to expand your perspective. Instead of focusing on inner elements, the contextual analysis looks at the time and place of the film’s creation. Therefore, you should work on studying the cultural context a lot. It can also be a good idea to mention the main socio-political issues of the time. You can even relate the film’s success to the director or producer and their career.
  • Mise-en-scene analysis . This type of analysis works with the most distinctive feature of the movies, audiovisual elements. However, don’t forget that your task is not only to identify them but also to explain their importance. There are so many interconnected pieces of this puzzle: the light to create the mood, the props to show off characters’ personalities, messages hidden in the song lyrics.

Film analysis types.

To write an effective film analysis essay, it is important to follow specific format requirements that include the following:

  • Standard essay structure. Just as with any essay, your analysis should consist of an introduction with a strong thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The main body usually includes a summary and an analysis of the movie’s elements.
  • Present tense for events in the film. Use the present tense when describing everything that happens in the movie. This way, you can make smooth transitions between describing action and dialogue. It will also improve the overall narrative flow.
  • Proper formatting of the film’s title. Don’t enclose the movie’s title in quotation marks; instead, italicize it. In addition, use the title case : that is, capitalize all major words.
  • Proper use of the characters’ names. When you mention a film character for the first time, name the actor portraying them. After that, it is enough to write only the character’s name.
  • In-text citations. Use in-text citations when describing certain scenes or shots from the movie. Format them according to your chosen citation style. If you use direct quotes, include the time-stamp range instead of page numbers. Here’s how it looks in the MLA format: (Smith 0:11:24–0:12:35).

Even though film analysis is similar to the literary one, you might still feel confused with where to begin. No need to worry; there are only a few additional steps you need to consider during the writing process.

✔️ Reread the prompt twice! It’s crucial because your thesis statement and main arguments will be based on it. To help yourself at this stage, try an . It will make your efforts more productive.
✔️ Take your time and watch the film as many times as you need so that you don’t miss anything. You might find it helpful to take notes or even use a screenplay if you can find one.
✔️ You should write down a thesis statement and organize the main ideas. Don’t forget to support your arguments with evidence and make sure they align with the assignment requirements.
✔️ The last step is writing the first draft of your essay. The text doesn’t necessarily have to be perfect since you still need to take some time to edit and to proofread it.In the next sections, there are more detailed descriptions of how to get every step done quickly. And remember that you can always ask your supervisor for help if you have any questions!

Starting Your Film Analysis Essay

There are several things you need to do before you start writing your film analysis paper. First and foremost, you have to watch the movie. Even if you have seen it a hundred times, you need to watch it again to make a good film analysis essay.

Note that you might be given an essay topic or have to think of it by yourself. If you are free to choose a topic for your film analysis essay, reading some critical reviews before you watch the film might be a good idea. By doing this in advance, you will already know what to look for when watching the movie.

In the process of watching, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Consider your impression of the movie
  • Enumerate memorable details
  • Try to interpret the movie message in your way
  • Search for the proof of your ideas (quotes from the film)
  • Make comments on the plot, settings, and characters
  • Draw parallels between the movie you are reviewing and some other movies

Making a Film Analysis Essay Outline

Once you have watched and possibly re-watched your assigned or chosen movie from an analytical point of view, you will need to create a movie analysis essay outline . The task is pretty straightforward: the outline can look just as if you were working on a literary analysis or an article analysis.

  • Introduction : This includes the basics of the movie, including the title, director, and the date of release. You should also present the central theme or ideas in the movie and your thesis statement .
  • Summary : This is where you take the time to present an overview of the primary concepts in the movie, including the five Ws (who, what, when, where, and why)—don’t forget how!—as well as anything you wish to discuss that relates to the point of view, style, and structure.
  • Analysis : This is the body of the essay and includes your critical analysis of the movie, why you did or did not like it, and any supporting material from the film to support your views. It would help if you also discussed whether the director and writer of the movie achieved the goal they set out to achieve.
  • Conclusion: This is where you can state your thesis again and provide a summary of the primary concepts in a new and more convincing manner, making a case for your analysis. You can also include a call-to-action that will invite the reader to watch the movie or avoid it entirely.

Writing & Editing Your Film Analysis Essay

We have already mentioned that there are differences between literary analysis and film analysis. They become especially important when one starts writing their film analysis essay.

First of all, the evidence you include to support the arguments is not the same. Instead of quoting the text, you might need to describe the audiovisual elements.

However, the practice of describing the events is similar in both types. You should always introduce a particular sequence in the present tense. If you want to use a piece of a dialogue between more than two film characters, you can use block quotes. However, since there are different ways to do it, confirm with your supervisor.

For your convenience, you might as well use the format of the script, for which you don’t have to use quotation marks:

ELSA: But she won’t remember I have powers?

KING: It’s for the best.

Finally, to show off your proficiency in the subject, look at the big picture. Instead of just presenting the main elements in your analysis, point out their significance. Describe the effect they make on the overall impression form the film. Moreover, you can dig deeper and suggest the reasons why such elements were used in a particular scene to show your expertise.

Film Analysis Example #1: The Intouchables

Raising acute social problems in modern cinema is a common approach to draw the public’s attention to the specific issues and challenges of people facing crucial obstacles. As a film for review, The Intouchables by Oliver Nakache and Éric Toledano will be analyzed, and one of the themes raised in this movie is the daily struggle of the person with severe disabilities. This movie is a biographical drama with comedy elements. The Intouchables describes the routine life of a French millionaire who is confined to a wheelchair and forced to receive help from his servants. The acquaintance of the disabled person with a young and daring man from Parisian slums changes the lives of both radically. The film shows that for a person with disabilities, recognition as a full member of society is more important than sympathy and compassion, and this message expressed comically raises an essential problem of human loneliness.

Movie Analysis Example #2: Parasite

Parasite is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller movie directed by Bong Joon-ho and is the first film with a non-English script to win Best Picture at the Oscars in 2020. With its overwhelming plot and acting, this motion picture retains a long-lasting effect and some kind of shock. The class serves as a backbone and a primary objective of social commentary within the South Korean comedy/thriller (Kench, 2020). Every single element and detail in the movie, including the student’s stone, the contrasting architecture, family names, and characters’ behavior, contribute to the central topic of the universal problem of classism and wealth disparity. The 2020 Oscar-winning movie Parasite (2019) is a phenomenal cinematic portrayal and a critical message to modern society regarding the severe outcomes of the long-established inequalities within capitalism.

Is Watching Movies A Hobby Or Interest? (Explained With Benefits)

A hobby is simply defined as an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.

With that in mind, watching movies is certainly both a hobby and an interest. In fact, watching movies comes with quite a few benefits that you might not even be aware of.

Love watching movies? Then be sure to keep reading on as I talk about why we love watching movies so much and the positive influence that they can have on us.

Watching Movies Is A Hobby: 4 Great Benefits

is watching movies a hobby

Movies offer more than just a great way of passing the time. Here are four great reasons to keep enjoying the process of kicking back, relaxing, and watching a movie (especially if it’s with others).

1) Watching Movies Is Great For Date Night

I will be the first to admit that watching a movie with a special someone, is amongst one of the best date-nights that you can partake in. I say this from a lot of experience, too.

When I was a little younger, my two best go-to dates were:

  • Mini-golfing as a date.
  • Watching a movie together.

Heck, I still go have date nights with my girl when it comes to those two activities (because they are still a lot of fun).

The fact of the matter is that not only is watching movies a great hobby, but you even get a much better experience when you share it with someone else.

Movie nights are also great first-dates because it takes a lot of the pressure off of you. Most of your time will be spent watching the movie, but you’ll still be able to be close to each other.

2) Watching Movies Is An Inexpensive Hobby

There is a wide variety of ways that you can watch a movie, all of which are going to be relatively inexpensive.

I almost completely forgot to mention that this is a great thing when it comes to hobbies. After all, there are plenty of hobbies, activities, or even sports that cost a pretty penny to partake in.

Here’s a good idea of what you can expect to pay when it comes to watching movies:

  • Redbox rental is around $2.00
  • Cable TV (which is going to fluctuate).
  • Netflix pricing is as low as only $8.99 per month.
  • I would say that the average movie ticket is around $10 (depending on when you go).

Keep in mind that if you go to see a movie in the theater, you’re most likely going to get some food and refreshments as well. Unless you bring snacks to the theater with you 😛

Overall, getting some type of movie subscription is always going to be your best bet. Netflix is relatively cheap and there are plenty of other alternatives that are even cheaper.

Lastly, there is always the option of purchasing movies for a deep discount. If you’ve ever been flea-marketing or tag-sale shopping, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Plus, you can always re-sell movies, which I talked about in the related article that I added below.

When it comes to garage sales and purchasing movies from others, I’ve seen prices such as:

  • Ten cents (usually if bought in bulk).
  • Twenty-five cents.
  • Fifty-cents.
  • One-dollar.

And many other prices that are extremely low, especially for being able to purchase movies. In many instances, buying movies can actually be much cheaper than renting them.

3) Watching Movies Offers A Wide Variety Of Emotions

I’ve personally seen thousands of movies throughout my lifetime, so it’s very easy to see that watching movies can provide you with a rollercoaster of emotions.

This is also true regardless of the genre that you’re watching. Heck, even watching cartoons as a hobby comes with a wide variety of emotions.

Even better, you can watch a movie based upon how you are feeling, or how you want to feel. I embedded a great clip up above from the movie Mallrats, where Stan Lee relates comics to love, as well as his life. As Jason Lee states:

So you created each character as a way to deal with your one big regret.

What Stan Lee ends up telling Jason Lee (no relation), ends up being a joke. However, there’s a whole lot of truth in regards to what he tells him.

Movies aren’t just created to bring out emotion, but they are also created to share stories and inspire people. They allow you to connect with characters, even if they aren’t real.

That’s yet another big benefit of watching movies, aside from the emotions, are the connections that you create with some of your favorite characters. And just because you can’t actually see these connections, doesn’t mean that they aren’t there.

4) Watching Movies Is Great For Bringing Family And Friends Together

So I’ve covered the aspect that watching movies is one of the best date-night activities that you can participate in. What’s also great about watching movies is that you can do it with friends and family.

I don’t know about you, but I have more memories than you can shake a stick at when it comes to watching movies with friends and families.

For me personally, I’ll never forget gathering around the television and watching movies that are forever timestamped in my head:

  • Shedding a tear when Apollo died in Rocky 4 (don’t act like you didn’t).
  • My dad spoiling The Sixth Sense and telling everyone Bruce Willis is dead (lol).
  • Repeat watching the original Indiana Jones movies (not so much the Crystal Skull).
  • I’ll never forget watching the original Scream when I was young and being scared stupid.

Ironically enough, Scream was one of the horror movies that didn’t get bad reviews. I’m not sure if you’ve ever noticed it, but critics seem to have an ax to grind when it comes to horror movies.

Anyways, I’m sure that you have plenty of fond memories as well. These are the types of memories that you can create when watching movies with friends and family, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

Can Watching Movies Be A Hobby In A Resume?

Absolutely! Watching movies can be added as a hobby to your resume. However, this isn’t going to be the best option when it comes to listing your favorite hobbies.

The reason for this is that employers usually want to see hobbies that showcase a wide variety of interests, skills, or characteristics. While I’m all about kicking back and relaxing to watch a movie, I wouldn’t put this on a resume (unless it was beneficial).

Speaking of being beneficial, this is something that you’d want to put on your resume if:

  • You wanted to become a movie review or critic.
  • You’re looking at working at a movie theater or in the movie industry.

And any other examples where the employer is going to want to know that you are pretty much obsessed with movies and watching them. Aside from that, it’s best to talk about other hobbies that are more creative and can showcase some type of critical thinking or desirable skills.

What Is The Hobby Of Watching Movies Called?

A person who has a big passion for cinema or anything movie-related is called a cinephile. Those who are cinephiles, also tend to see movies from a different lens (so to speak).

This is according to Wikipedia , which also uses the term movie buff (which is something that I personally characterize myself as).

My Hobby of Watching Movies

Growing up, movies were always a big part of any downtime I had. Generally, they were for most people my age. Typical movies were the Disney classics and the unforgettable Pixar films. The moment when Marlin found Nemo touched us almost as much as when Woody and Buzz became the best of friends. The best part was that movies were common and everyone was watching them so it was a great topic to relate to. It was a general consensus that movies were just pleasurable and not meant to be taken so literally.

Now, they represent advertising rather than leisure. The common trends in the movies recently released and viewed by teens have strayed from delivering motivational messages to a focus on alcohol, partying and who is the most popular kid in school. From the introduction of the ever-so-famous Cady Heron from the teen classic Mean Girls to the banger bash at Thomas’s house in the newly released phenomenon Project X, films have taken the idea of teen drinking and twisted the festivity in reality.

In other words, why is an illegal drug presented as the most sought-after social event for teens? In a study on alcohol use in top-grossing American films featured in the Journal of Community Health, researchers took 110 films, with over 50% of them being rated PG-13 or higher, and found that 96% of the movies had at least one pro-alcohol event (Everett, Schnuth, Tribble 3). With this change in media comes change seen in the lives and behavior of those viewing these types of films from the big screen to their smart phones.

“ KarrieWrites did such a phenomenal job on this assignment! He completed it prior to its deadline and was thorough and informative. ”

Instead of guiding these lost individuals down a path more appropriate, PG-13 movies create negative effects on the behavior of these teens through their representations and exposure to alcohol in society.

First of all, the accessibility of R-rated movies is now easy and is one of the many reasons why movies have such a strong impact on teens growing up. Featured in the Journal of Health Communication, Susannah R. Stern, a member of the Department of Communication Studies at The University of San Diego, conducted a sample study covering the messages teen films deliver regarding on teen drinking. Stern states that teens from the ages of 12 to 17 account for 19% of total movie theater admissions (Stern 333). Movies can additionally be viewed in cinema complexes, on DVDs and Blu Ray Discs, on movie channels on televisions, on their smart phones and devices, and through rental programs, such as Blockbuster, Netflix, and On Demand. Ratings have limited control which is an issue being that rated R movies are commonly viewed by individuals younger than seventeen. Teens have developed ways around the systems of society in order to get what they want. Some would like to think they are not permitted to without adult supervision. However, underage teens are frequently sneaking into R movies. For example, they can buy a ticket for a movie they are allowed to see and sneak into the theater playing the R movie. Therefore, it is not surprising that in a recent study featured in the journal Pediatrics, national K-12 education reporter for USA Today, Greg Toppo, estimated that over 2.5 million teens from ages 10 to 14 watch R-rated movies (Toppo). As you can see, rules and regulations are becoming less and less of something to follow being that it is just not what teens are wanting these days. Instead, they are looking to view what is considered to be “cool”. Not only are they looking to see the biggest parties, the hottest actors and actresses, and no rules, but they are also looking for clues on how to be themselves.

Adolescence is a time where individual thoughts and desires begin to form. It is also when teens begin to stray away from constant parental guidance, a part of the development phase. However, the recent influence in assisting such kids is not so much their parents or peers, but is rather now the media. In the Handbook of Children and the Media, Psychologists explain that “an area commonly studied is a child’s identity development and how the media is analyzing the gender-role learning” (Huntemann Morgan 308). It was also stated that the boom of computer and technology use impacts the search for identity being that people are now seen relying on the big screen to help them become comfortable with growing up, sexual encounters, relationships and identity (Huntemann Morgan 313). Movies, in particular, are generating films targeted to these kids who are looking to learn about themselves. These types of alcohol movies are widely accepted by the teenage population, but negatively affect their behavior and identities. One major message that movies illustrate is that drinking is cool. It is not the good student or the religious kid who is focused on, but rather the person who got drunk and did something wild over the weekend. For example, in the 2001 comedy Mean Girls 2, the character of Abby was a timid girl who was loathed by a very popular and vindictive girl. Abby’s friend, Jo, did not want her shy friend to be bullied anymore for reason being she wasn’t like the rest of those in the “in crowd”. In an attempt to change the situation, she threw a party at Abby’s house. With this party, Abby was seen as “more cool” (Mayron). Another example of a film whose message states that drinking is cool is the 2012 comedy Project X. With his parents away, the main character, Thomas, and his two friends planned to have a party in an attempt to be noticed. It was aimed to be small, but one of his friends, Costa, was urging for him “not to be a loser anymore” and throw a huge bash (Nourizadeh). When returning to school after the party, Thomas was then rewarded and acknowledged with huge ovations and hellos. Both movies’ messages imply that one who is seen as a “loser” in society could change that reputation if desired by simply having a party.

As you can see, being a reserved individual was not condoned whereas partying was. Teen films encourage the consumption of alcohol when searching for what is considered to be cool. The psychological issues here that arise for adolescents are those that regard themselves and the problems found with them. Combining the effects of alcohol with the vulnerable psychological state of teenagers is even more dangerous. Moreover, when someone drinks, they lose self-control, common sense, and stability. This makes for opportunity for poor decision making and can hurt a person’s reputation, identity, and their lives. To elaborate further, teen movies are dangerous to identity development because it changes adolescent values away from what they have already been taught to believe what they see on screen is more perfect. Drinking is not helpful to finding adolescent identities, but rather unconstructive. As teens keep viewing these types of films all while continuing to grow up, their views start to alter and behaviors tend to worsen. If someone doesn’t know exactly who they are and need guidance, many teens tend to look at those on the big screen and take the fiction being showed as reality. When the characters who party often are the ones who have a lot of friends, have fun, and are happy, teens will then try parting as the answer to being cool.

The “coolness” on the big screen commonly linked with partying also affects their view of what is popular. So if the messages movies are pushing for include partying to be the way into the “in” crowd, no “wimp” gets the girl, and being drunk is the most fun one could have with their friends, teens will judge others this way and encourage each other to drink. Drinking is often portrayed as positive. Nearly 40% of the major teen characters in Stern’s sample were shown drinking at least once, and 14.4% more than once. (Stern 339). Movies often illustrate parties where massive consumptions of alcohol occurring in one sitting, more commonly known as binge drinking (Urban Dictionary). Drinking, in other words, equals giant parties, as seen in Project X and Mean Girls 2 already.

To discuss further, in the previously mentioned film, Project X, stressed the importance of popularity and partying. Thomas and Costa were amongst those hardly noticed in school. This film focused predominantly on the fact that the party that was thrown in order to gain some sort of popularity (Nourizadeh). In review of the film, Peter Travers of the Rolling Stone comments, “Project X is an unholy mess that reaches down to the age-irrelevant drive in all of us to just get shitfaced and run amok” (Travers). Additionally on the big screen in 2009, the comedy 17 Again illustrated how the partying and popularity combination go hand in hand. Seventeen-year-old Mike O’Donnell was transformed from an adult to his teenage-self due to a wish. Mike takes this opportunity of being a teen again to become popular and well more liked than he is as an adult. Seen as merely the new, weird kid, he decided to get more popular by having a party. Instead of taking fixing his life like he had originally intended, society skewed him otherwise as he then aimed to provide more “happiness” for him by becoming popular. The party was Mike’s key to spiking his status. Both movies’ messages represented the common attitude scene in movies that partying was thing to do, especially when looking for popularity growth.

This coolness seen in drinking also connects to the change in how adolescents view and treat others. Some teens face behavioral changes as they become more open or cocky being that they now find themselves to be cool because they drink. A further example of a teen film whose main character became popular due to partying and as a result treated others differently is the 2004 comedy Mean Girls. Protagonist Cady Heron was the new girl at school, but when she joined a group of three popular girls, she began to hang out with them in school and attended their parties. The girls’impacted Cady so much that she was even pushed to lie to her parents and best friends and throw a big party at her house. This came with her new found popularity (Waters). Partying and popularity influenced Cady’s relationships negatively. This doesn’t necessarily aid the self-identity search process. If anything, it stunts it. Partying movies affect the view of others additionally being that what is seen in movies may be completely different as to how their life is and they look to change that. Adolescents watch these movies and become motivated to be more like what is on screen and strive to do so with their new found attitudes. Another factor that plays a part in relationship issues is that partying doesn’t involve the consent of parents.

In Mean Girls, Project X, and 17 again, the parents were not home. Instead, they were surrounded by their peers. In a sample study featured in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, Mark D. Wood, from the University of Rhode Island, examined the “influences of peer and parent variables on alcohol use and its problems”. It was found that “as young adolescents begin to assert their own independence from the family, additional extra-familial socialization influences become more incorporated into their sense of identity” (Wood 19). “Active” and “passive” social influences were also observed and linked to adolescent drinking. To be actively influenced would be if a drink was offered whereas passive influences consist of someone’s view and beliefs on drinking based on their surroundings (Wood 20). Wood’s sample study concluded that “both active and passive peer influences were uniquely associated with heavy episodic drinking and alcohol-related negative consequences” (Wood 25). As you can see, movies support the idea that a drink in their hand leads to a foot in the door. With this said, it is extremely rare that movies portray the bad that accompanies drinking. This is part of the problem and contributes to the negative impact PG-13 movies have on the behavior of adolescents watching them. Teens fail to see the problem in drinking because they are blinded by the attraction of partying. Teens look to stray away from rules and more towards the alcohol because they see nothing telling them otherwise.

Project X is an example of a film where consequences of teenage drinking are absent. Thomas and Costa’s party ended in havoc as cops were everywhere, the house went up in flames and kids ran through the streets to get away. After being caught by his parents, however, Thomas was not portrayed as losing out when he is punished by being grounded (Nourizadeh). Film critic, Wesley Morris, of The Boston Globe writes, “This one [production) downplays the legal and personal consequences of the party and celebrates the glory of having achieved it” (Morris). In Stern’s sample study of substance use and messages in teen movies, it was found that 22% of characters who appeared to be under the age of 18 drank, with 60% of them not experiencing consequences as a result of their consumption. (Stern 334). As seen in Project X, the film industry fails to shine light on the consequences of drinking. Yes, there are a few scenes out there that show a teenager “learning their lesson”, but what consequences are actually shown? Movies choose to not display the consequences that are to occur if the events on screen take place in reality, but rather the depicted “fun” and amusement that comes with getting drunk. These teenage movies create problems in society because there are actual negative consequences that come from consuming alcohol and they are not being shown. When studying the connection between movies’ exposure to alcohol and related problems in adolescents, Doctor of psychology, Thomas A. Wills, states, in the journal Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, that alcohol related problems can vary from relationship problems, difficulties in school, or even as extreme as accidents. (Wills 24). In addition, Wood came across “a number of negative alcohol related consequences” in his previously mentioned sample study. “Hangovers and becoming sick from drinking were the most frequent occurrences, reported by 45.7% and 44.2% of respondents, respectively. Alcohol related memory impairment (33.7%), saying things that were later regretted (31.5%), becoming rude and obnoxious (23.4%), and engaged in sexual situations that were later regretted (18.2) were the next most commonly endorsed negative consequences” (Wood 23). To name a few more, too much alcohol consumption can lead to heavy vomiting, increased urge to fight, spiked emotions, and loss of self-control, decision making, perception, balance, and reason.

In Wills’ study based on alcohol and its consequences on adolescents, it was discovered that “out of a total of 961 teens between the ages of 10 and 14, 64% experienced no problems when drinking, 20% had experienced one problem, 8% had two problems, 4% had three problems, 3% had four problems and 1% had experienced five or more problems” (Wills 27). Some of the heavier penalties and problems that can be faced when drinking are drunk driving, being arrested, and alcohol poisoning. In addition, some serious long-term consequences include death, both one’s self and killing another, permanent brain damage, severe injuries, and sicknesses. As I stress the importance of these issues, note films chose not to highlight these complications. Granted, should it matter that teens are shown drinking in films it if is illegal to do so? Parents and other authorities would like to believe this. However, what they don’t take into account is that it is still easy to obtain alcohol. INSERT YOUTH SERVICE SURVEY. In this paper, I aimed to contesting this claim and argue the advertisement of alcohol would cause “forbidden fruit” theory to show how that makes it even more desirable. With this, I mean it would push for the idea that when teens can’t have something they want, they want to get it even more.

Short Essay on the Movie I Like Most

  • March 5, 2019

The following movie review is provided by a professional academic writer from a short essay writing service which helps students with academic writing. Watching a movie is a pastime that plenty of people across the world really enjoy. While many people prefer to watch their movies on the big screen at the cinema, advancements in technology enable us to stream movies at home or on the go. The cinema, as well as our mobile or tablet devices, have made it easy for us to see some documentaries and stories portrayed on screen.

i love watching movies essay

Personally, the cinema is the place to be when it comes to watching a movie due to the big screen and amazing sound. The one movie that stands out in my mind, as well as the minds of many people that I like most, is “Titanic”.  This movie does not only tell us what happened on 15 April 1912, but it also features some of the best actings I have ever seen.

It is a captivating and incredibly produced movie that is seen as a classic till this very day. Many people across the world have heard of this movie in some way shape or form because of its historical references. Released way back in 1997, James Cameron’s “Titanic” is a movie that successfully tells an emotional love story of two people who bumped into each other on board the ship.

The story follows lovebirds Jack Dawson, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Rose Bukater, played by Kate Winslet. The ship was sailing from the south coast of England, heading to America. Jack and Rose come from two very different social classes but nothing stopped their love from blossoming.

Jack comes from a very poor background and is a struggling article while Rose is a beautiful woman married to a rich man who does not her. This movie brought to life a relationship that is present in this day and age. It is possible now for a young lady from a wealthy background to wed a man who comes from a poor background if they love each other so much.

The movie proves that love can indeed be found anywhere in this world, even on a ship as big as the Titanic. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet had amazing chemistry which is clear to see especially when they shared screen time. One amazing moment in the movie is when the crew on the ship are drawn to the two teenage lovers making love.

By diverting their attention to them, no one is paying attention to the ship and it hits an iceberg. The horrible death of over 1500 people onboard the ship as well as the efforts to save as many people as possible is what makes this movie amazing. While the ship is sinking and Rose on board a life board with her mother, she decides life cannot go without Jack and jumps back onto the sinking ship.

When they two love bird eventually get united, there are no lifeboats left on the ship and passengers are dying all around them. As the ship falls apart, Jack helps Rose get on a wooden panel that can only hold one person to prevent her from drowning. In one of the most powerful scenes ever captures, he tells her she will die an old woman and Jack pays the ultimate price at the end.

He dies of hypothermia for being in the cold icy water for too long thus sacrificing his own life and saving Kate. Seeing and hearing Kate say “come back, come back” to Jack knowing her lover has passed away is one of the most emotional and touching scenes I have ever seen. It is a scene that not only brings tears to my eyes but the eyes of everyone who watches it play out.

You cannot help but feel for the poor lover especially Jack who loses his life. The reason is you become emotionally attached to Jack and Rose, their love story, their rebellious nature and to see a tragic ending like this is heartbreaking. A lot of credit has to go to the actors, writers, director, composers, and producers of this amazing film.

The script, the music and camera angles were all on point and tell a story that is experienced today. It comes as no surprise to see that the movie was well received by both critics and fans when it was released. The Titanic was a ship that cannot be sunk according to various allegations and not even God could sink it.

What I love about this film from the first time I watched it is I wanted to know if this is the case. Is the Titanic really a boat that cannot be sunk by God or any other force of nature. There are not many movies out there that can captivate an audience the same way that “Titanic” has. This movie is a timeless classic, a masterpiece and has a special place in my heart.

It is till this day remains one of my favorite movie ever made and the 5 th highest grossing movie of all time in the USA and Canada. The movie has won 4 golden globe awards for best original song, best motion picture drama, best original score, and nest direction. It was nominated for an amazing 10 BAFTA awards however, it didn’t win any which came as a surprise to many people.

Watching Movies in Cinemas and at Home

Which one is better: watching movie in theatre or at home? Both options have their pros and cons. Read this “watching a movie at home vs. theater” essay to learn more!

Introduction

Differences between watching movie in theater and at home, similarities between watching movie at home vs cinema, comparison between watching a movie at home and in theatres.

It does not matter whether a person likes action, drama, comedy, or another genre of films and movies. Almost everyone loves watching video materials. There are many reasons for people’s desire to watch video films and movies.

While most people watch videos to release stress or for recreation, others watch films for bonding and socializing. Movies can be watched either at home or in the available theaters. Therefore, one has to choose whether to stream movies alone at home or go to a movie theater with friends and family. Both types of places have differences and similarities that are tabulated below.

High cost Low cost
High quality Lower quality
Less comfort Very comfortable
Less convenient Very convenient
No privacy Privacy guaranteed
Recent movies available Recent movies available after some time
In both, one gets stimulation and excitement.
One can bond with family or loved ones by watching movies at home or in theatres.
One can watch while taking a snack in either of the two types of places.

The activity is fun and compelling regardless of where one watches a movie. Both venues provide the stimulation and excitement that comes along with watching a movie. Many people tend to use the moment as the time for developing bonds with their relatives and friends.

It is achieved regardless of the venue chosen for watching the movie. Many people also like taking a snack like popcorn while watching movies. These items can be bought at the theaters. Similarly, one has the freedom to eat some snacks at home.

There are many differences between watching a movie at home and in theatres. The cost, for instance, is different. First, watching a film at a theatre requires a person to drive and pay for the ticket and any other facility or accompaniment. On the other hand, no cost is incurred when watching a film at home.

The quality of the video and sound is also a major aspect that shows significant differences between the two scenarios. Theatres have installed perfect sound systems and high-quality screens that create a perfect customer experience.

At home, one may have a good sound system, but it rarely matches those in theatres. Theater owners are aware that they are competing with affordable home theaters. Therefore, they include visual upgrades like IMAX and Real 3D. They increase the quality of experience at these facilities compared to the home-based systems.

One can sit on a couch, on the carpet, or watch a movie in any position to achieve comfort. Therefore, the comfort level when watching a movie at home is higher than in a theater. In fact, one needs to be aware of strangers sitting next to him or her. At home, there is a high degree of freedom of posture, style, music, and other aspects.

Convenience is also a significant aspect. For instance, people going to the theater are required to wait until their film choices are aired. In addition, they are required to make plans on how to get there. If one viewer wishes to leave the place for a moment due to any reason, an important scene is likely to be missed. These kinds of inconveniences are not experienced at home.

At home, a person can pause, rewind, or forward when necessary. In addition, one could watch a movie halfway, stop it and look for another if they do not like it. In theaters, viewers could leave the place for a while but miss some sections.

This means that watching movies at home is convenient. However, in theaters, one does not have to deal with commercial breaks between the movies, but a television telecast of the same movie is always full of frequent advertisements.

The issue of privacy is also a major aspect of this case. Noteworthy, theaters are shared facilities, while homes are privately owned properties. In particular, movies like “Titanic,” which invokes human emotions, are better watched at home. Few people like to show their emotions in public.

Another essential difference involves the desire to keep updated with the film market. For instance, watching a movie in theaters enables one to watch recent materials and movies in the industry. When watching them at home, one has to wait until they are released in a DVD format or aired on a television channel.

The environment in the two places is different. In theaters, viewers must adhere to the rules of the facility. For instance, one is not supposed to shout, but at home, one is free to shout.

On the other hand, watching some terrifying films is more exciting when a group is involved than when a viewer is alone. Thus, theaters are the best places to watch such films.

There are several differences between watching a movie at home and in a theater. The choice is based on personal tastes and preferences. Therefore, some people love watching movies in groups and choose theaters, while others like watching them alone and prefer watching the material at home.

Surprising Effects Of Watching Movies With Your Family

Having movie nights with your family during weekends is a great way to spend time together. Even if you are in a small family or a large family set-up , nothing beats huddling up to watch your favorite movie. Besides, watching movies is an easy and inexpensive recreational activity that you can do with your family. This activity can be enjoyed even just in your own DMCI Homes condo unit. All you have to do is prepare your snack, probably a tub of popcorn; set up the table and TV; play the film, and you’re ready to go.

Even though this activity is cheaper compared with other family activities such as going to recreational parks or going out of town, it nonetheless offers the same benefits. Study shows that watching a movie with your loved ones is good for you—it strengthens bonds, promotes family togetherness, and builds tradition, among others.

Here, we list 10 benefits of watching movies with your family.

Studies also show that children who spend time with their parents on weekends score higher on tests and are more likely to graduate than those who do not. On the other hand, children who spend less time with their parents are less able to focus at school.

3. Lessens Behavioral Problems Among Children

One of the benefits of watching movies for children is that it lessens behavioral problems among them. Children who do not spend time with their family tend to do destructive things such as stealing and cheating. Thus, watching movies with your children is a good opportunity to instill good values to them.

As parents, you can also explain the social situations your children see in the films. Doing so will instill to your children the proper values they need to become better people.

4. Results In Less Violent Kids

One of the best things to do on weekends is to watch a film with your loved ones. Watching movies is not only an enjoyable activity, it also promote strong bonds, leading to less violent kids. A study revealed that teens who spend more time with their parents have lower risk for substance abuse. Whereas, teens who spend less time with their parents are twice likely to try drugs  in the future such as marijuana, cocaine, or other illegal drugs.

A good way to avoid this is to spend time with your kids through watching your favorite movies in your own condo unit in the Philippines.

6. Boosts Self-Confidence

Spending time with your spouse results in better intimacy, better communication, and strengthened bond, and in turn strengthening your marriage. In addition, you can provide your children a good example for their future relationships.

Children always want attention from their parents. However, sometimes, parents cannot divide their attention to their children equally, resulting in sibling rivalry.

Watching a movie together as a family gives ample opportunity for parents to bond with their kids. In turn, kids will feel loved and will feel that there is no competition between siblings, which lessens sibling rivalry.

9. Increases Trust Among Family Members

Movie time is a good way to bond with your children and spouse. Bonding time can help eliminate any barrier between family members. Movie time is also a good venue for laughs. You and your family members can talk about the memorable scenes in the movie afterward, building a strong foundation between family members.

The social and communication skills of children are first honed at home. That is, home is where children first learn how to establish relationship with others. Therefore, spending time with your children during weekends through watching your favorite film is a good way to foster their communication skills.

Watching movies with your kids also encourages children to cooperate and collaborate with others.

Watching a movie or two with your family during weekends is a good way to spend your time. Movie time is an easy and inexpensive recreational activity that you can do with your family. Television as a window to the world.

One of the main reasons I am drawn to television is its ability to act as a window to the world. It provides me with a glimpse into different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Being a Cougar Is So Back

Recent films like The Idea of You and A Family Affair are challenging long-held myths about older women and desirability.

older women younge rmen on screen

Everything old is new again, as the saying goes. Or rather, everything older . At least when it comes to the age of women being romanced onscreen (and sometimes off), and new when it comes to the young men romancing them.

What’s also new? The direction of this age gap.

In the last two decades, culture has labeled women who pursue these relationships “cougars.” Suggesting an inappropriate power imbalance, and framing the woman as a predator of a sort (that this concern is never applied in the reverse is but one small example of how women are forever held to different standards).

But lately, what has been considered a derogatory punchline is being reclaimed as empowering in the cultural zeitgeist. The last few years, however, have seen a refreshing resurgence of storylines featuring love stories between older women and younger men when we’ve long been accustomed to the opposite. After all, some of the most classic films in Hollywood have starred older male actors and much younger actresses: Gary Cooper (51) and Grace Kelly (23) in High Noon ; Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (24 year age gap) in their many collaborations; Jimmy Stewart (42) and Grace Kelly (now 25) in Rear Window ; Gwyneth Paltrow (26) and Michael Douglas (54) in A Perfect Murder (a classic to some of us!); Tom Cruise and nearly all his recent co-stars.

nicholas galitzine and anne hathaway in the idea of you

The film version of The Idea of You was released on Prime Video in May, with Anne Hathaway in the role of Solène, a gallerist who just turned 40, and Nicholas Galitzine playing the much younger Hayes, the frontman of pop sensation August Moon. (Much like real-life Wilde, who was the target of much online vitriol from certain corners of the Internet during her relationship with Styles, when the tabloids catch wind of Solene’s and Hayes’ relationship, she is blasted as a cougar in the press, prompting her daughter to get bullied and teased at school.) And last week, A Family Affair premiered on Netflix starring Nicole Kidman as a successful widowed writer in her early fifties who falls for the boss of her 23-year-old daughter (played by Joey King); the man in question is an over-indulged dimwitted movie star played skillfully by Zac Efron, who is 20 years Kidman’s junior.

a family affair l r nicole kidman as brooke harwood and zac efron as chris cole in a family affair cr aaron epsteinnetflix 2024

While these are the two most recent high-profile examples they are hardly the only ones. In the HBO limited series The Sympathizer , Hoa Xuande’s character, 36, has an affair with Sandra Oh (52) (also: duh). In 2022, Jean Smart won the Emmy for her performance in season 2 of Hacks , which contained an episode where her character has a one-night stand with a much younger man.

We’ve also seen critical interrogations of this relationship dynamic. The 2023 film May December , which was inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau case, is a difficult, if, at times, darkly comedic, look at a relationship between a 36-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy, who go on to marry and have children together. Further afield, the compelling French film Last Summer , directed by Catherine Breillat, which arrives in American theaters this month, is about a fifty-something married lawyer who has an affair with her teenage stepson. As the plot progresses, audiences are increasingly asked to interrogate the sexual dynamics at play through a #MeToo lens.

One noteworthy distinction here is that these relationships are not fodder for cheap laughs. Drama, yes. But not a punchline—or a pity party. And this attitude is extending beyond the screen: A recent revival of Sunset Boulevard in London cast the glamorous and powerful Nicole Scherzinger, 45, as Norma Desmond, a role that has long defined the pitiful aging woman grasping desperately at her lost youth. In this case, however, director Jamie Lloyd told The New York Times , he was specifically looking for an actress “in her prime.”

So what accounts for this flipping of the age ratio?

Entrepreneur and former ad executive, Cindy Gallop , whose viral 2009 TEDTalk “Make Love Not Porn” opened with the line “I date younger men,” believes it’s a reflection of who is making these films. “The onscreen narratives we’re seeing now come from books and scripts by women, and are being helmed by women, and backed and driven by women.”

.css-1aear8u:before{margin:0 auto 0.9375rem;width:34px;height:25px;content:'';display:block;background-repeat:no-repeat;}.loaded .css-1aear8u:before{background-image:url(/_assets/design-tokens/elle/static/images/quote.fddce92.svg);} .css-1bvxk2j{font-family:SaolDisplay,SaolDisplay-fallback,SaolDisplay-roboto,SaolDisplay-local,Georgia,Times,serif;font-size:1.625rem;font-weight:normal;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;margin-bottom:0.3125rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.2;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 73.75rem){.css-1bvxk2j{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-1bvxk2j b,.css-1bvxk2j strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1bvxk2j em,.css-1bvxk2j i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-1bvxk2j i,.css-1bvxk2j em{font-style:italic;} We know that older women are just as attractive to younger men, as older men are attractive to younger women, no matter how threatening the patriarchy finds that.”

And like anyone else, women want to see both their realities and fantasies reflected in the world. Culture, meanwhile, is struggling to keep up with how women actually live. We know from studies that single women without children report being happier, and yet we see few storylines that reflect the possibility of satisfaction outside of partnership or parenthood. Similarly, women are increasingly earning more, and thanks to access to better healthcare and nutrition and exercise many of us are remaining physically healthy for longer (as every celebrity website loves to point out). Why wouldn’t we be considered attractive to literally everyone?

Says Gallop: “We know that older women are just as attractive to younger men, as older men are attractive to younger women, no matter how threatening the patriarchy finds that.”

In some ways, these storylines feel long overdue. A small but necessary counterbalance to the so-called “ trad wife ” movement that has become increasingly popular on social media.

And yet, it’s worth noting we’ve been here before. As new as these pairings might seem, they are just the latest iteration. In 1996 Terry McMillan published How Stella Got Her Groove Back about Stella, a successful 42-year-old woman who flies to an island for vacation and falls for a 21-year-old, whom she eventually ends up marrying. In the movie, Stella is played by Angela Bassett and the younger man by Taye Diggs. And let us not forget Sex and the City ’s Samantha Jones and Smith Jerrod.

taye diggs and angela bassett in how stella got her groove back

In fact, if anything, this latest round feels tame—at least on screen. In The Idea of You, Hayes’ age has been upped from 20 to 26. Hathaway, meanwhile, could pass for a 30-year-old. The sex scenes onscreen are extremely mild compared to what’s described in the novel. Similarly, in A Family Affair , Kidman not only looks young, but she behaves like a woman half her age—giggling and insecure—and even then it begs the audience to believe that someone as accomplished as we’re told her character is would find anything in common with Efron’s, who behaves like an incompetent five year old. Abs are nice, but not that nice.

It leaves one craving something closer to what many of us are experiencing: The power and confidence of aging, with or without the youthful body to match. That’s something we all should be attracted to.

The No. 1 film this weekend is expected to be Warner Bros./DC’s “Inside Out 2,” a sequel to James Wan’s $1.15 billion superhero hit released back in 2018. “Inside Out 2” earned an opening weekend of $67 million five years ago and reached $100 million in domestic grosses after Christmas Day two days later.

Overseas is much better for Inside Out 2, with a 73-market launch looking to deliver $75M-$80M including China. That worldwide debut at its highest would be $110M through Sunday. The Middle Kingdom, which was a prime territory for the first movie, is looking at $25M-$30M alone. The sequel currently leads presales throughout the frame in the PRC, but remember we are far from the heady days of 2018, when the Inside Out 2al bowed to $93M+ at historic rates.

According to Forbes, the official budget for Inside Out 2 is over $274.8 million, making it one of the most expensive MCU films to date.

This comes as a bit of a surprise seeing as how the movie is only rumored to be around 100 minutes in length (however that has not been confirmed as of yet), but the high cost is likely due to the extensive VFX work that will go into bringing it to life.

However, Forbes also reported that Disney received a $55 million subsidy from the United Kingdom government while making the film, bringing the total amount spent on Inside Out 2 down to around $220 million.

In comparison the the budgets of other MCU films, this $274.8 million mark makes Inside Out 2 the fourth-expensive movie in the entirety of the MCU. The Greatest Night in Pop came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season’s most durable grossers and one of the year’s few bright spots when it comes to films

If you love Studio Ghibli, you need to watch this new Netflix movie

One reason I didn’t cancel my Max subscription after Warner Bros. Discovery started removing original shows and movies is the streamer’s complete collection of Studio Ghibli movies . I can’t stream Spirited Away , My Neighbor Totoro , or Kiki’s Delivery Service anywhere else, so I’ll stick with Max for now. Meanwhile, Netflix has been building up its own library of animated films from Studio Ponoc, founded by a former Studio Ghibli producer. Ponoc’s latest film is The Imaginary , and based on early reviews, it’s one of Netflix’s best movies of 2024.

Netflix announced that it acquired the international streaming rights to the movie in January, and now, months later, you can finally stream the movie at home:

According to the synopsis provided by Netflix, The Imaginary  “portrays the depths of humanity and creativity through the eyes of young Amanda and her imaginary companion, Rudger, a boy no one can see imagined by Amanda to share her thrilling make-believe adventures. But when Rudger, suddenly alone, arrives at The Town of Imaginaries, where forgotten Imaginaries live and find work, he faces a mysterious threat.”

As of Monday, The Imaginary has an impressive 91% on Rotten Tomatoes , with critics praising the movie’s impressive visuals and touching narrative. Though it might not stand up to some of Ghibli’s most exceptional works, it’s still a worthwhile watch.

After you are done watching The Imaginary , you can also stream Studio Ponoc’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower as well as Modest Heroes on Netflix.

A Woman Sleeping With Her Stepson? This Director Knows It May Shock.

The French filmmaker Catherine Breillat has been exploring relationships between girls and older men since the 1970s. Her latest, “Last Summer,” flips the script.

  • Share full article

A portrait of Catherine Breillat, looking soulfully at the camera.

By Carlos Aguilar

When the French director Catherine Breillat was 40, her then-husband and the father of her first child ended their relationship to be with a much younger woman. Soon after, Breillat started dating a man 12 years her junior.

“Men want to repudiate their wives of a certain age by saying they couldn’t be loved by anyone anymore,” Breillat said in a recent video interview via an interpreter. “But for me that’s not true. I want to tell other women there’s no cause for despair.” In “Last Summer,” which comes to theaters Friday, she probes at this realization through an incendiary premise.

Since the 1970s, the lauded director, now 75, has repeatedly focused her unflinching gaze on the troubled sexual awakenings of girls, often in the uncaring hands of older men, but in “Last Summer,” that dynamic is inverted: A middled-aged lawyer, Anne (Léa Drucker), risks her career and marriage by having a clandestine affair with her 17-year-old stepson, Théo (Samuel Kircher).

The film, Breillat’s first in a decade, joins several recent movies concerned with the power dynamics of heterosexual couples in which the woman is older, including the lighter Anne Hathaway-vehicle “ The Idea of You ” and Todd Haynes’s divisive “ May December .” (Haynes’s movie was inspired by the true story of a teacher who started a relationship with one of her students.)

According to Breillat, this wave of films reflects a simple reality. “It’s the truth,” she said: “Young people are attracted to older women.”

Aaron Eckhart's New Movie Is A Must-Watch Thanks To Continuing His Great Recent Career Trend

Keanu reeves' best neo scene doomed the matrix movies forever, 10 best alfred hitchcock mystery movies.

  • Muzzle, starring Aaron Eckhart, shares similarities with John Wick in its revenge plot and action-packed scenes.
  • Both movies feature a central character seeking vengeance after losing a beloved canine companion.
  • Aaron Eckhart's shift towards action thrillers, like Muzzle, highlights a new direction in his career.

John Wick is a pretty niche movie with a revenge story considering the revenge plot over a dead dog, but Aaron Eckhart's action thriller, Muzzle , has a lot in common. John Wick became a huge sensation after the first movie, starring Keanu Reeves, was released in 2014. Since then, it has been a huge part in reviving Reeves' career as a prominent action star, as well as launching a successful franchise. It now includes four central films following the titular hero, a spin-off TV show about The Continental , and planned spin-offs set within the same world.

But, with Wick now laid to rest, potentially for the last time, it's worth looking at other movies that have similar themes. Most action thrillers don't focus on dogs, or a revenge picture that is incited by a dog's death , but Aaron Eckhart starred in just such a film that had its initial release in 2023, around the same time as John Wick's potential final appearance in John Wick: Chapter 4 . For those missing the Wick franchise, Muzzle could be the perfect follow-up.

Aaron Eckhart as Benjamin Malloy in Chief of Station and Eckhart smiling as Steve Vail from The Bricklayer

Aaron Eckhart's latest thriller follows his 2024 hit The Bricklayer, and is the latest step in the actor's evolution as an action star.

Aaron Eckhart's Muzzle Movie Has A Lot In Common With John Wick

The relationship between a dog and their owner.

John Wick stars a middle-aged hero who is an extraordinarily skilled assassin in a world full of assassins. However, after a lengthy career, Wick decides to withdraw from his old job, and chooses to make a new life, living peacefully with his new dog. However, he is unable to escape his past for long, when a group of naive thugs break into his home and kill his dog . This singular incident causes Wick to return to his former life, at least in order to get revenge on the killers.

Muzzle has a lot of similar elements in the story. A middle-aged man who has spent years working in law enforcement as a K-9 officer ends up losing his canine companion in a shootout with some violent criminals. This causes him great distress, and he is desperate to find the killers, but his department puts him on the bench. However, Jake Rosser (Eckhart) is unwilling to sit on the sidelines, and he opts to adopt another, more aggressive canine companion to set out on a mission to find the killers and uncover a seedy criminal underworld in the process.

Muzzle Is Continuing An Interesting Career Trend For Aaron Eckhart

Aaron eckhart's new specialty focus.

Aaron Eckhart has enjoyed a long career in Hollywood, with his earliest credits dating back to 1992. His breakout role then came in 1997, when he starred in In the Company of Men , and he has continued to enjoy significant roles in popular films ever since. One of his most notable roles came in 2008, when he played the dual role of Harvey Dent and Two-Face in the Christopher Nolan film, The Dark Knight .

However, this could have marked an interesting turn in his career, as Eckhart was able to deliver an outstanding performance in an action-packed role. And, in the years following, it appears as though Eckhart has taken a special interest in action thrillers, as the star has appeared in nearly a dozen action thrillers since 2019. Muzzle stands out as the most similar to John Wick , but Ekhart is clearly prioritizing action roles at this stage in his career, and delivering some excellent new projects.

Muzzle (2023) - Poster

Muzzle (2023)

Muzzle is a 2023 crime thriller directed by Tibor Takács. The film stars Aaron Eckhart as LAPD K-9 officer Jake Rosser, who, after a tragic incident, teams up with a retired detective to unravel a conspiracy within the police force. The narrative explores themes of loyalty, corruption, and the quest for justice in a complex and dangerous world.

How a 'hungry' Mia Goth revamped the horror final girl in 'MaXXXine'

i love watching movies essay

Mia Goth has not yet put a body part in wet cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood – a place her starlet in the 1980s-set meta slasher movie “MaXXXine” would kill to be included. What Goth is an old pro at is weathering goop being put on her head to make a life cast.

She’s had it done for a few movies, including one rather stressful session for Marvel’s upcoming “Blade.” “I remember being very tired and a little hungry. I went in and we did the cast and I actually had to rip it off because I needed to take a breather and have a cup of tea,” Goth says of the incident, which ended up being good practice for a similar scene in “MaXXXine” (in theaters now).

Being covered in gunk is honestly one of Maxine Minx's lesser worries in director Ti West's ambitious, blood-soaked horror trilogy. In 2022's “X," Maxine is the lone survivor of a porn-film crew after a 1979 massacre perpetrated by an elderly Texas couple, including vicious wife Pearl, also played by Goth. (The actress played a younger version of her as a murderous, fame-starved farm girl circa 1918 in the prequel “Pearl.”)

“MaXXXine” catches up with Maxine in 1985, as the now-successful adult-film star has the chance to break mainstream in Hollywood when she’s cast in a high-profile horror sequel. Unfortunately, she’s also targeted by a mystery killer at the same time the Night Stalker haunts the streets of LA.

From first filming "X" to now headlining "MaXXXine," Goth's own star has grown – even going viral on TikTok – and the 30-year-old actress sees parallels between herself and the equally "determined" Maxine: “We knew what we wanted and we were going after it.” Adds West, “She was very much ready to prove herself that she could carry a movie.”

Ever been affected by a movie? 'MaXXXine' is for you

West tackles a bunch of themes over the course of his trilogy, from stardom and celebrity to the Moral Majority and Satanic panic of the ‘80s. But he also wanted to explore how characters are affected by different eras of cinema for a movie-loving audience, even those who aren't horror fiends.

With “X,” which sported a tone akin to “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” West wanted to show the “entrepreneurial DIY nature of trying to make a tiny movie outside of the system and carve your own niche,” he says. Then “Pearl,” a Technicolor nightmare influenced by “The Wizard of Oz” and old Disney films, centered on “someone who's unhappy with their state in life and looks to the glitz and glamour of the movies as the grass is greener: If I had a life like that, it would be better."

And with “MaXXXine,” inspired by the “gritty, sleazy” likes of “Vice Squad” and “Angel,” the 43-year-old filmmaker set out to recapture his own experiences of going to an '80s video store: "There's this endless amount of movies that look salacious and subversive and interesting.”

'MaXXXine' puts a dangerous spin on the horror final girl

In the trilogy, Goth portrays two very different characters: Pearl, the jealous woman with a violent backstory, and Maxine, the preacher’s daughter who lives by the mantra “I will not accept a life I do not deserve.” “She's got a chip on her shoulder. She's hungry to prove herself to the world and even more importantly to herself,” Goth says of Maxine.

And with her in particular, West wanted to reinvent a well-tread trope: “A big part of it was to try to have the final girl not act like one.” In “X,” Maxine escapes and gruesomely runs over Pearl’s head at the end, and in “MaXXXine,” she’s not to be trifled with either, pulling a gun on a creepy dude in Buster Keaton cosplay and driving her heel into a rather sensitive spot on his body.

“She's fully aware that she has little to no control over people around her and the situations that might take place around her, but she is in full command of her decisions and her actions and she has the fearlessness and the courage to act on those,” Goth says. “It's fun to be the one that's holding the gun, taking matters into her own hands.”
