What is nuclear fission?

Nuclear fission is a reaction where the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, while releasing energy.

For instance, when hit by a neutron, the nucleus of an atom of uranium-235 splits into two smaller nuclei, for example a barium nucleus and a krypton nucleus and two or three neutrons. These extra neutrons will hit other surrounding uranium-235 atoms, which will also split and generate additional neutrons in a multiplying effect, thus generating a chain reaction in a fraction of a second.

Each time the reaction occurs, there is a release of energy in the form of heat and radiation . The heat can be converted into electricity in a nuclear power plant, similarly to how heat from fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil is used to generate electricity.

How does a nuclear power plant work?

Inside nuclear power plants, nuclear reactors and their equipment contain and control the chain reactions, most commonly fuelled by uranium-235, to produce heat through fission. The heat warms the reactor’s cooling agent, typically water, to produce steam. The steam is then channelled to spin turbines, activating an electric generator to create low-carbon electricity.

Mining, enrichment and disposal of uranium

Uranium is a metal that can be found in rocks all over the world. Uranium has several naturally occurring isotopes , which are forms of an element differing in mass and physical properties but with the same chemical properties. Uranium has two primordial isotopes: uranium-238 and uranium-235. Uranium-238 makes up the majority of the uranium in the world but cannot produce a fission chain reaction, while uranium-235 can be used to produce energy by fission but constitutes less than 1 per cent of the world’s uranium.

To make natural uranium more likely to undergo fission, it is necessary to increase the amount of uranium-235 in a given sample through a process called uranium enrichment. Once the uranium is enriched, it can be used effectively as nuclear fuel in power plants for three to five years, after which it is still radioactive and has to be disposed of following stringent guidelines to protect people and the environment. Used fuel, also referred to as spent fuel, can also be recycled into other types of fuel for use as new fuel in special nuclear power plants.

What is the Nuclear Fuel Cycle?

The nuclear fuel cycle is an industrial process involving various steps to produce electricity from uranium in nuclear power reactors. The cycle starts with the mining of uranium and ends with the disposal of nuclear waste.

Radioactive waste makes up a small portion of all waste. ‘A very warm welcome to all of you. Allow me to present my speech on nuclear energy. The power of nuclear is immense. It provides 10 percent of the electricity across the world and still has the potential to meet much more energy needs. But as every coin has two sides similarly, nuclear energy can meet many more of our needed energy concerns about safety, waste, and the spread of nuclear weapons. 

In my speech, I will try to give a balanced perspective on the pros and cons of nuclear power.

Let us examine some examples of how nuclear energy impacts our daily lives. As we all know, nuclear reactors generate huge amounts of carbon-free electricity. This carbon-free electricity also provides current to our homes and provides us with an alternative way of generating electricity.

So next time, whenever you turn on the lights, charge the phone, tablet, or any electronic device, it might happen that your gadgets are consuming electricity from the nuclear plant. Furthermore, the current also powers major military assets such as aircraft carriers and submarines. In medicine, one cannot imagine treating cancer without the consumption of nuclear energy. Is there any other example of nuclear energy in our everyday lives?

Certainly Yes, the five major uses of nuclear technology include carbon-free powder, scientific research, naval power projection, space exploration, and last but not least, medicine. Learning about the uses a bit comprehensively makes us understand that electricity and nuclear power plants generate 2 to 3 percent more than wind and solar energy.

Using nuclear energy as fuel in scientific research not only boosts the speed of particle accelerators but also helps in the high performance of computer simulations. Whether it is nuclear-powered submarines, radioisotope thermoelectric generators, or radiation therapy to cure cancer, everywhere nuclear energy plays a vital role and marks its presence strongly for the benefit of humans.

So where does this leave us? In my view, nuclear energy is an important part of our energy mix. It provides stable as well as carbon-free power throughout 24 hours and 7 days and in every season or climate. Though nuclear energy has risks too if handled carefully then the technology definitely will come as a boon for us.’

The released heat is used to boil water, which later on helps in the spinning of turbines to generate electricity.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) , As of 2023, there are 413 nuclear reactors for generating electricity across 32 countries. By the end of the year 2022, 12 countries were dependent on nuclear energy to supply at least one-quarter of their total electricity. The United States ranks first in having the most reactors, followed by France. 

It is important to note that nuclear reactors emit no greenhouse gases and, therefore, don´t affect the environment in any way. If we compare it with the burning of fossil fuels, then the numbers are a bit shocking. The lifecycle emissions of nuclear reactors are 8–12 times lower than those of coal and natural gas per unit of generated electricity.

Like every coin, it has two sides, and similarly, nuclear energy provides no harm to the environment but also has some disadvantages. The careless handling of nuclear energy can cause severe consequences for the atmosphere. Accidents such as Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and Fukushima Daiichi are some of the calamities that don´t want to be repeated. Moreover, the waste of power plants and its impact on the environment, as well as radioactive waste, are some of the disadvantages of nuclear energy that raise our eyebrows and raise our concerns.

Nuclear power helps in generating electricity worldwide. It is reliable, affordable, and emits low carbon dioxide as compared to fossil fuels. But still, some challenges require attention as well as constructive discussion to find solutions to the drawbacks.’

Firstly, it is a renewable energy source, which ensures that it can be used to generate electricity without consuming scarce natural resources such as coal, oil or gas. As we all know, fossil fuels are being used at an unprecedented pace.

Second, it is safer than fossil fuel, in other terms, it will help us minimise the carbon content that induces global warming. Ultimately, the development of nuclear power will create more job possibilities and even make those technologies more effective for the industry.

Furthermore, the expense of constructing a nuclear power plant is high, and expensive investment would put a heavy economic strain on the country.

In addition, I agree with the assertion that nuclear technology can be used somewhat in some nations, such as some developing countries. Nevertheless, the country’s growth has been driven by technical and scientific developments, and the officials are required to boost the country’s global influence and increase the quality of living of people.

The threat of nuclear weapons maintains world peace but nuclear power provides cheap and clean energy. The benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree? the innovation of unclear technology has brought human being into a new world. some people believe its advantages over the disadvantages. however, i have different view on it. doubtlessly, the advances of nuclear technology benefit people in many ways. the invention of nuclear generator provides thousand times electricity than the traditional one does. also, instead of burning fossil fuel, it emits no carbon dioxide to the surroundings, which is recognised as the only solution to solve global warming and continuously supplies adequate power. besides, nuclear weapons are powerful defences to against terrorist activities. although the nuclear energy generation can eases the energy crisis all over the world, it is highly hazardous not only to nearby citizens but also nations. last year, the tsunami destroyed nuclear plant in Japan and caused massive reactant leakage. this accident contaminated nearby water region, even countries over the pacific ocean are affected. countless kinds of species are mutated, which the harmful consequences are still unknown. the incident poses serious threat to all organisms. furthermore, countries are competing to hold as much nuclear weapons as possible. they claim that such weapons are simply for security purpose. however, the total amount of nuclear weapons is more than enough to destroy the entire world several times. in my opinion, it is questionable that maintaining national peace by such scary weapons. on a whole, nuclear technology is beneficial to mankind especially on energy issue. meanwhile, it also poses life-threatening hazards to all species. i doubt about the worthiness of risking people's lives to obtain temporary merits. Are the benefits of nuclear technology far outweigh the disadvantages! I think that is a seriouse question.So ,We need to think carefully and invistage both the benefits and disadvantages of nuclear power in oder to give an accurate helpful answer here.

First of all .Nuclear teachnology could be a great result of the dedicated scienticfic efforts in that domain .Specially when it is used in peaceful ways .If we use it in gnerating electricity .Or ,for example to run factories and lighten organisation .

However ,It can be a double edged weapon .Clearly ,the results of Heroshima and Nagasaki Catastroph are still evident until our days .It affected the shape of all people that lived in those areas in a specific way .In addition to, the distortions of the human genes .

Even If ,some people said that it decreases the carbon dioxide print .I would rather look at the mass desctruction such nuclear wars can bring to our world .No wonder it may destroy our planet in no time .
I'm not against the nuclear technology at all .On the contorary ,I'm for its peaceful uses that can bring peace ,welfare and prosperity for humanity .It may oneday be able to cure wicked dideases like cancer or diabetes .who knows !neveretheless ,I think that disadvantages of nuclear would far outweigh its benefits as long as we dont have guarantees about its use .In conclusion Peace and safety of humnaity and the planet earth comes first .

Although, nuclear weapons are one of the most integral parts of maintaining world’s peace, however policy makers debate whether the advantages of nuclear technology surpass the disadvantages. Mainly, because of its benefits such as public protection and cheap energy sources, clears the air why advantages of using nuclear technology way outweigh the disadvantages. Nuclear technology presents a vital role for public protection since it has the direct correlation with the safety with citizens all over the world. To clarify this, many strong and powerful countries like USA, Russia, India and China have nuclear weapons made from nuclear technology and utilize this whenever a very dangerous and harmful war happens between countries to save its own people. For example, in 1965, in China-India war, India utilized nuclear atom against China to shield its people. It can be also used for producing various energies, which plays beneficial role for human’s life. It helps to generate cheap and clean energy. For example, in the year of 1998, Russia manufactured cold water refinement energy, which helps to clean and cold water to its citizens with very low-cost money. Although disadvantage such as explosion with the misuse of nuclear technology, however its use as public protection and useful source for energy surpassing all of its disadvantages. In future, Governments from all across the world should need to utilize more nuclear technology in a correct way to explore more benefits for human beings with keeping in mind, that any misuse must be avoided.

An example here would be, in India the government is taking measures to remove all the dangerous waste generated by nuclear energy. To conclude, nuclear technology is more beneficial to mankind. Although, its manufacturing can lead to many environmental problems. Thus, we should always consider its advantages and disadvantages before taking any step.

Nuclear energy is the all-powerful alternative to fossil fuels, and it is the finest choice to satisfy the rapidly increasing demand across the world. In my opinion, I completely agree with the fact that Nuclear energy is a pretty appropriate choice and a good replacement for fossil fuels. I will explain my views on why nuclear energy is a superior option in the subsequent paragraphs.

One of the best substitutes for fossil fuels is Nuclear energy. It generates a lot of energy from a very small amount of fuel and emits very little Co2 and other harmful pollutants. It also has a very good safety record as hundreds of nuclear power plants worldwide have been operating for more than fifty years without any serious accidents. Moreover, several nations are using nuclear energy as an alternative source to generate electricity as they don’t emit harmful gases that lead to acid rain or global warming. In fact, nuclear energy has saved many lives in the past, which may have been lost if we had built fossil-fuel plants instead of nuclear reactors.

One of the major threats of using nuclear power is the creation of radioactive wastes that might be an environmental issue. The radioactive materials might also be fatal. However, these nuclear power plants are built very carefully to prevent such releases. As a result, even the two worst nuclear accidents in history (Chernobyl and Fukushima) have harmed very few people in number compared to fossil fuel pollution.

Although nuclear fuel is not renewable like fossil fuels, they have high productivity with no geographical limitations. The sustainability of nuclear power is a very big concern as it will be an environmental tragedy if a dangerous crash occurs.

To reiterate, nuclear energy is a reliable and powerful source of electricity with zero emissions. Besides, nuclear energy is still more viable than fossil fuels and is relatively safe.

Nuclear technology has become one of the potent resources and fulfills the demands of people accordingly. In my opinion, nuclear power has demonstrated more benefits for constructive purposes for varying factors of life. I shall illustrate my perspective in the below paragraphs.

To begin with, there are plenty of advantages that can be gained by developing more nuclear stations. First and foremost, nuclear technology is extensively used in the fields of science and medicine, such as X-rays, to diagnose significant internal fractures and injuries. Another noteworthy example is radiotherapy that is universally used to cure patients suffering from deadly diseases, such as malignant cancerous tumours, and more.

In addition to this, the green power stations, being eco-friendly, do not have any contribution to air pollution. Moreover, it can be used to produce electricity without wasting any restricted natural resources, be it gas or coal. To represent it better, everybody knows that nuclear gas is a renewable resource and that it cannot go extinct; hence, it can be effortlessly used in diverse major sectors. With this gas, there will be no issues of carbon emission. Furthermore, this way, there will be no issues of climate change, or the air quality will not further deteriorate. Consequently, a lot of countries are comprehending to integrate nuclear power as the solution to high demands of gas, oil, electricity and decrease the issues with climate changes as well as pollution.

While it is true nuclear power is being used for negative factors too, such as nuclear bombs, the benefits it offers evidently surpass the drawbacks.

Conclusively, nuclear technology definitely has a lot of positive uses and provides a promising future. From my point of view, it would be better if this power is used for its true benefits and the betterment of the world.

In my opinion, nuclear power needs to be used, and the user should also be controlled and hedged with renewable energy sources as they are the only viable solution. Nuclear plants currently provide 11% of the world’s electricity. With an ever-increasing demand for electricity being seen everywhere and the fossil fuels reducing each day, it is now more important than ever that major decisions should be made. In the upcoming decades, energy consumption will only increase and meet the rising demand; nuclear power plants will be required as they are the best source of traditional energy-producing sources. Although nuclear power plants are required, it is also necessary to gradually push renewable energy sources and promote them to create a sustainable future for future generations. Nuclear power plants’ waste disposal and radioactivity are the concerning factors that have been the hot topic of most debates at conventions and meetings. In addition to that, a single misuse of this tremendous power can result in the disruption of life for all mankind. Striking a balance between the two will be crucial in the coming time as global warming and the energy crisis are on a constant rise. If nothing is done in the near time, countries could get submerged underwater within the coming decades, and the entire world will have to fight for survival.

The writing section of the IELTS exam consists of two sections. Writing task 2 is an essay writing task that requires deep thinking and coherence. This task will be our focus for this blog, as the rules and guidelines of the IELTS exam can be confusing for students appearing for the first time. Writing task 2 has the subsequent guidelines:

  • The essay should have a minimum of 250 words. An essay written in less than 250 words will be penalised and negatively marked. There is no penalty for writing a longer essay, but it will cause you to stray off-topic and waste time.
  • 40 minutes is a good enough time to complete this task and will leave you with time to recheck your answer.
  • The essay’s contents should be written with perfect grammar and solely focused on the topic.
  • You can be penalised if you stray off-topic while writing your essay. All the sentences must be related and formed to provide a clear view and information.
  • The content must be well structured to fetch the best results and have proper cohesion between the sentences.
  • The tone of your answer must be academic or semi-formal and should discuss the given topic at length and focus on proper and sophisticated language.
  • Using bullet points and notes is not allowed in the IELTS exam . The real answer must be written together and broken into paragraphs to better examine your writing style and structure.

Structure of Essay in Writing Task 2

The structure of the essay in writing task 2 is the base of your essay, and a clear idea of the structure will make it much easier for you to finish the essay on time. The structure of the essay can be broken down in the following way:

  • First Paragraph
  • Second Paragraph
  • Third Paragraph
  • Fourth Paragraph

The first paragraph of your essay should provide a small introduction to the topic and provide an opinion of yours about what side you are on about the topic. The first paragraph should be minimal and to the point. A clear and concise introduction leaves a good impression on the examiner. The second paragraph should begin with your stance on the topic. The first sentence should provide clarity on your stance. The second sentence should build on that idea and delve deeper into the specifics. The next sentences are suitable for providing an example and developing it in detail. You can make up research studies and quote them in your essay to support your point. At the end of the paragraph, end with a statement that sums up the overall idea of the paragraph and supports the idea you started with. The third paragraph is very similar in structure to the second paragraph. The main objective of this paragraph is to provide either the opposite view of the topic or discuss new ideas that touch on a different perspective of the topic but ultimately support your opinion. The structuring is the same as in the second paragraph, with minute changes. The fourth paragraph is the conclusion of your essay and, just like the introduction, should be minimal. Summing up your essay with a statement supporting your opinion and overall idea is best advised.

In April 2021, Japan declared they would be dumping 1.2 million tonnes of nuclear waste into the sea. This is the same Japan that called the 1993 ocean dumping by Russia “extremely regrettable.” The discharges are bound to begin by 2023, and various legal proceedings and protests have been going on inside Japan against this inhuman decision that would destroy marine life.

Ans: Opposition to nuclear power has been a long-standing issue. It is backed by a variety of reasons which are as follows:Nuclear waste is hard to dispose of, and improper disposal affects the radioactivity levels and can disrupt the normal life of people as well as animals. Nuclear technology is another concern of people as the usage of nuclear power plants leads to deeper research into the nuclear field. In today’s world, anything can be weaponised, and the threat of nuclear weapons is one of the drawbacks of nuclear power. This brings the threat of nuclear war and disruption of world peace. Any attack on nuclear power plants by terrorist organisations can result in a massive explosion that can disrupt and destroy human life and increase radioactivity to alarming levels around the site of the explosion.

5. What is the best way to dispose of nuclear waste?

Ans: Nuclear waste needs to be disposed of properly to prevent radioactive issues in the environment. The best methods to dispose of nuclear waste are as follows: a. Incineration : Radioactive waste can be incinerated in large scale incinerators with low production of waste. b. Deep burial: Nuclear waste can be buried deep into the ground as the radioactivity of nuclear waste wears off over time. This method is used for waste that is highly radioactive and will take a longer time to lose its radioactivity. c. Storage: Nuclear waste with low radioactivity is stored by some countries in storage. This is because their radioactive decay takes lesser time and can be disposed of safely once the radiation wears off.

6. Is it possible to produce electricity without using fossil fuels?

Ans: At the moment, 11% of the world’s electricity is produced by nuclear power plants alone. Replacing fossil fuel-based energy with renewable needs to be done gradually and properly. Renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, and wind will have to be promoted and pushed to create a sustainable future. Renewable energy sources provide cheap energy, do not use up natural resources and fossil fuels and are much cheaper to construct than a nuclear power station.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Nuclear Energy Effectiveness Essay

It is argued that nuclear energy has negative impact on the environment. It is believed that nuclear energy can be used to promote terrorism through manufacturing of weapons. It is also feared that the radioactive elements of nuclear can have adverse effects on the environment. However, nuclear energy is the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way of generating electricity.

It is regarded as the most effective way of producing electricity in large scale (Bull 1218). This essay will argue that nuclear energy is the most appropriate way of producing large scale electricity with minimal effects to the environment.

The first argument presented is, nuclear energy can produce large scale electricity without depleting environmental resources available. Nuclear energy is extracted from atomic nuclei through nuclear fission (Serrano & Rus 2374). Moreover, compared to fossil fuels, nuclear energy does not utilize natural resources entirely in order to produce electricity.

The elements used in nuclear power production are renewable due to their radioactive nature; a factor which qualifies it to be classified as a renewable energy. It is evident that developed countries use nuclear energy to produce electricity for both domestic and industrial use. France reprocesses nuclear waste and recovers up t0 95% of the remaining plutonium and uranium which is used as fuel in nuclear plants (Bull 1220).

Although water is used to cool nuclear plants, we can conclude that nuclear energy is the most cost effective method of producing electricity. In addition, it is an environmental friendly and the best alternative for fossil fuels. Nuclear energy is not dependent on natural resources to produce energy, thus these resources are not overused (Bull 1221). We can conclude that nuclear energy is environmental friendly.

The second argument is that nuclear energy does not pollute the environment. Furthermore, it is regarded as a sustainable source of energy because carbon emissions are minimal; it increases security in energy sector and reduces dependence on foreign oil. It does not emit green house gases like carbon dioxide which cause global warming and climate change (Serrano & Rus 2375).

Fossil fuels, natural gas and coal produce green houses which in turn result to climatic changes and global warming. Nuclear energy is regarded as the best option to reduce these adverse effects making it environmental friendly. Although nuclear energy accumulates waste which is an environmental concern; the waste is in small amounts and can be re-used to produce power.

Due to increasing concern over global warming, countries are encouraged to utilize nuclear power to reduce environmental pollution. According to a broadcast in 2007, nuclear energy gives France the cleanest air considering it is an industrialized country. It also provides the whole of Europe with cheap electricity (Serrano & Rus 2376).

In addition, nuclear energy is cost effective because it is affordable and relatively less expensive. Although building of the nuclear plants can be relatively expensive, the maintenance cost of running the plant is low. Considering that fuel (Uranium) is cheap and water is free and readily available, then the cost of running the plant is in expensive.

Moreover, a nuclear plant is able to produce large scale electricity thus making nuclear energy cost effective. It consumes less and produces more. The plants are energy- efficient and little maintenance is required to run them (Bull 1224). As a result, the cost of labour is reduced hence making nuclear energy cost effective.

The fact that nuclear energy produces less greenhouse gases lowers the environmental cost. Nuclear plants can utilizes a small surface area thus making it affordable and less expensive to run. When we combine these factors, we realize that nuclear energy is the most cost effective way of producing electricity (Bull 1226).

In conclusion, the main argument is that, nuclear energy is the most cost effective and environmental friendly method of producing electricity.

In my opinion, it is cost effective because it’s less expensive to run, efficient and the cost of labour is reduced. Moreover, the materials used in nuclear plants are cheap and readily available (Serrano & Rus 2379). I believe, nuclear power is environmental friendly because it does not depend entirely on natural resources to produce energy thus ensuring environmental conservation.

It does not generate greenhouse gases hence has less negative impacts on environment. In my opinion, countries should be encouraged to invest on nuclear energy to produce cheap electricity efficiently. Also use of nuclear energy should be controlled to ensure that it is not used to produce destructive weapons 9 Serrano & Rus 2380).

South Korea’s stance on nuclear latency – the condition of possessing the technical capability to develop nuclear weapons without actually doing so – is a critical and complex issue in international relations. Seoul’s nuanced position reflects a blend of historical, strategic, and geopolitical considerations that require thorough analysis to understand its necessity. 

From an objective perspective, several factors underline the importance of South Korea maintaining nuclear latency: regional security dynamics, technological advancement, international alliances, and domestic political landscape.

Historical Context and Regional Security Dynamics

The Korean Peninsula has long been a flashpoint of geopolitical tension, especially since the Korean War (1950-1953). The war ended in an armistice, rather than a peace treaty, which left South Korea perpetually under the shadow of North Korea’s aggressive posturing and military provocations. 

North Korea’s advancements in nuclear weapons and missile technology have further exacerbated this threat. The regime’s successful nuclear tests and the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the U.S. mainland have heightened South Korea’s security concerns.

Nuclear latency provides South Korea with a strategic deterrent against North Korean aggression. By maintaining the capability to develop nuclear weapons rapidly if necessary, South Korea ensures a form of strategic ambiguity that can serve as a deterrent in itself. This potential capability can make adversaries think twice before engaging in hostile actions, thereby contributing to regional stability.

Technological and Economic Considerations

South Korea is a technological powerhouse with advanced capabilities in nuclear technology. Its civilian nuclear program is one of the largest and most sophisticated in the world, providing a substantial foundation for potential military applications. The country’s prowess in this sector means that transitioning from civilian to military nuclear capabilities, if ever deemed necessary, could be achieved relatively swiftly.

Moreover, South Korea’s economic vitality is deeply intertwined with its technological advancements. The ability to harness nuclear technology for both civilian and potential military purposes underscores its technological sovereignty and reinforces its position as a leading global innovator. This dual-use capability enhances national pride and can act as a bargaining chip in international negotiations.

Domestic Political Landscape

South Korea’s internal political landscape also influences its stance on nuclear latency. Public opinion and political leadership play pivotal roles in shaping national security policies. While there is considerable public support for the U.S. alliance, there is also a growing sentiment that South Korea should have greater self-reliance in defense matters, including the potential for an independent nuclear deterrent.

Political leaders must balance these domestic pressures with international obligations, particularly regarding non-proliferation. South Korea is a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and has consistently advocated for denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula. Any move toward developing nuclear weapons would not only undermine these commitments but also potentially provoke regional arms races and international sanctions.
