Want Updates?

The school system seems to be demanding more and more of 3rd grade students. I guess we have to give them what they want. This page has some reading worksheets and activites to help prepare your 3rd graders. The worksheets on this page are written at the 3rd grade reading level. I used this fantastic tool to determine the readability scores of my worksheets, but you should read and approve each of them yourself for quality and appropriateness before giving them to a child. I encourage you to check out the worksheets written for the next two grade levels also. Reading scores vary greatly from one measure to the next. The readability scores on this page are a composite of those numbers. You'll get a better variety of appropriately leveled reading worksheets if you consider this idea of "reading bands." Lydia boutwell.

I love the ereading activities, since my school is virtually, and I would love to see more for 3rd grade. The only problem I have is when one is labeled grades 2-5 for example, then the reading is to difficult for a 2nd grader. I just wished it would be broken down more. Otherwise, what you are doing is great and I appreciate all the work people are doing.

A big thank you to everyone makes this website possible.

This is a fantastic platform to have for guiding students in grades 3-6 through specific skills. For the students the lessons are interesting, often captivating, and inspiring for those students who experience difficulties taking tests. Thank you! I appreciate your work. Be well.

I love this Site it always me and my kids to work one on one and it is very fast loading also

Thank you so much for this brilliant website!

Eric Harrison

I feel you are in need of more 3rd grade material.

I agree with you.

Thank you so much for your hard work. I really appreciate what you do for us teachers with this site. I have been a 3rd grade teacher for more than 10 years and its not like it use to be, there is a great demand for rigor in 3rd grade. I have used your work when I have had gifted classes and the students loved the texts. Your work helps me challenge my 3rd graders and prepare them for 4th & 5th. Thank you!

That’s awesome.

Be on the look out for a bunch of new content for grades 3-6. I’m currently developing these activities…

Thanks for visiting and taking the time to comment!

The number of Alabama third-graders reading below grade level in 2024 is almost half of the number from 2023.

Last week, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama released its latest measure of statewide third-grade reading tests. The number of Alabama’s third graders reading below grade level dropped 8 percentage points in 2024.

In 2023, over 9,000 third-graders were performing below grade level, but this year, under 5,000 third-graders were at or above grade level. The top improving categories were rural counties and charter schools.

The study also explores some of this year’s factors that could further explain an uptick like recovering from the pandemic in a classroom and the new sense of urge surrounding an effective retention provision.

The Alabama Literacy Act was passed in 2019 and began assessing the educational needs of third-grade students below their reading levels and directing additional resources for select students to improve.

The Alabama Literacy Act also added a retention component that took effect this year. For the first time, if third graders were not reading at or above grade level, they would be offered a voluntary summer reading program starting this summer and opportunities to retake the test.

After the voluntary summer program and taking it a second or third time until passing, students would be eligible to move to the next grade level this August.

The largest systems in the state saw the percentage points tick down. Birmingham City Schools cut the percentage of students below reading level in half and Montgomery County School System saw a significant decrease.

Since Birmingham City Schools and Montgomery County Schools are two of the largest school systems in the state, there is an increased population of economically disadvantaged students.  The majority of reading improvement was made in high-poverty systems that are already facing the setbacks of underfunding.

The school system with the highest number of third-graders below reading level was the state’s largest school system, Mobile County. There, 13 percent of students were below grade level for a total of 476 students.

Teachers licensed in Oregon will soon be required to take science of reading training

by Christina Giardinelli

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek at the State Library in Salem on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, during the announcement that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is expanding to all counties in the state. (KATU)

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — According to the latest statewide report card, a majority of Oregon students are not reading at grade level by third grade.

CONTINUING COVERAGE | Early Literacy in Oregon

When taking office, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek promised to change this. A series of initiatives she rolled out since then aim to strengthen schools' literacy programs.

The latest change will modify teacher training curriculums to align with a series of recommendations made by a council convened by way of Kotek's executive order issued last year.

“These recommendations are a significant step forward,” Kotek said in a prepared statement. “I appreciate that the council has not just layered on new requirements. They have also tried to streamline existing standards and build on the things we’ve had and continue to be important, like dyslexia standards. In addition to the council, I want to thank Oregon’s educator preparation program faculty and leaders who took the time to share their perspectives with us. We listened and many hours were spent taking your feedback into the revisions of the recommendations.”

The new curriculum for teacher teaching K-5th Grades will combine Reading Instruction Standards with Dyslexia Standards so that teachers are learning about reading disabilities at the same time they are learning how to teach kids to read.

The recommended curriculum also brings reading instruction in line with the science of reading. For decades teachers nationwide were taught reading instruction methods that research has since show to be ineffective.

The so called "whole language" approached used guess work and pictures to help kids essentially memorize what words look like instead of learning how to decode words through phonics.

Since the latest research has shown decoding is the most effective way to learn how to read, many schools have started re-introducing phonics-based reading instruction to some extent however many teachers have not been trained to teach those methodologies.

The Early Literacy Educator Preparation Council was tasked with making sure newly licensed teachers are prepared to teach according science based methods.

Teachers licensed starting in the fall of 2026 will be required to take the new curriculum. Rep Boomer Wright (R-Coos Bay) who sits on the council says the council recommended a phased-in approach to allow teaching colleges to catch up.

"It takes a while to implement a curriculum like we have come up with it takes training for the professors," he said.

The process will take longer for teachers already licensed in Oregon.

Boomer says the council will likely recommend having them take the updated reading instruction courses as a continuing education requirement when they renew their license.

Who Won the Debate? Biden Stumbles Left Trump on Top

A halting debate performance by President Biden left Democratic strategists reeling, raising questions about his fitness to stay in the race.

Reporting from Washington

In the first presidential debate of the year between the leading Democratic and Republican candidates, President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump clashed on inflation, taxes, Ukraine and the future of democracy.

A halting performance from Mr. Biden and a relatively steady and measured delivery by Mr. Trump left Democrats deeply concerned about Mr. Biden’s prospects. Personal attacks overshadowed discussions of policy during the debate, with the candidates sparring over who had a better golf game, their respective cognitive abilities and their legal problems.

On cable news and social media, strategists from both parties wondered if Mr. Biden could continue in the race against Mr. Trump. Few Democrats could muster an upbeat assessment of the president’s performance.

Here is a sampling of the reaction.

“It was a really disappointing debate performance from Joe Biden. I don’t think there’s any other way to slice it. His biggest issue was to prove to the American people that he had the energy, the stamina — and he didn’t do that,” Kate Bedingfield, Mr. Biden’s former White House communications director, said on CNN.

“Biden is even whiffing on his easy pitches — abortion and Jan. 6. I mean, my God,” said Matt Gorman, a Republican strategist and former senior adviser to the presidential campaign for Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

“Look, I debated Joe 7 times in 2020. He’s a different guy in 2024,” Andrew Yang, a Democratic presidential candidate in 2020, said on the social media platform X, adding the hashtag #swapJoeout.
