Junk food has become very popular nowadays especially among children. Children really like junk food and as a result junk food are provided at school. Is it good or bad for children? There are advantages as well as disadvantages of junk food in schools.

There are three main advantages of junk food in schools namely quick preparation, change in routine and benefits for children’s health (Borkar, 2011). One of the main advantages of junk food is that it is simple to cook and it satiates hunger. If any child forgets his/her lunch bag at home it is very convenient to have junk food for lunch at school (Maire, n.d.). More than that, it is delicious and liked by children. It is the food that is easy to eat even on the go. As a result, junk food saves a lot of time and it is very convenient at schools where the breaks are not so long to have a rigorous lunch (Jenkins, 2005).

The second advantage is the change in routine. Children are accustomed to the food prepared at home and junk food at school may add the variety to their routine menu (Antwerp, n.d.). It does not have serious effects on the health if it is varied with the food prepared at home.

Earlier this week I was teaching healthy eating to Kindergarten kids. I was invited to speak at my little cousin’s school to talk to about 36 girls and boys about healthy, balanced eating. In this post, I’m sharing the class lesson outline I created.

While I didn’t get paid to do this (I do get paid a small fee to go into other schools), I thought it was such a good opportunity to have an impact on young kids.

I’ve done workshops and talks for older children (mostly high school) but this was my first time creating health lessons for Kindergarten kids.

Full disclaimer: I’m not a teacher. I’m a dietitian and nutritionist. I’m not a mum yet so my experience with kids is from spending time with my cousins, nephews and nieces… but because I’m a dietitian, you bet I did my research! 

I really wanted to prepare properly. So I asked my friends who are teachers for assistance. And researched online. But I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for online – a balanced, healthy eating class lesson outline created for Kindergarten kids.

And because I believe sharing is caring (something I learned in Kindergarten!) here is the class lesson I ended up creating… in case it helps you in any way.

My healthy eating class lesson for Kindergarten kids

Here is my class structure when I taught kids aged 6-7 about being healthy: 

  • Students: 36 Kindergarten kids, mixed-sex
  • Time: 45-minute class length
  • Start time 8:45 am (I think this helped with engagement)
  • Other details: I brought with me a bag of vegetables, fruit and food as props, but obviously nothing that could be a good allergen such as nuts. I wore casual clothes (a bright yellow jumper, jeans and sneakers) to feel more relatable and fun. I don’t know if this matters but it felt right for me.

Section 1. THE BASICS

Intro: I started by introducing myself by my first name (more casual then Mrs. Cohen) and I explained that I help people eat healthily for my job. This means that I can help sick people in hospitals to feel better, guide healthy people to feel happier and support athletes to play even better and be stronger or run faster.

Back to basics: I explained that lots of things can affect how healthy you are… like what you eat, how you think and other things like whether you put on sunscreen to protect you from the sun.

Living things need to eat to stay alive. Like your pet at home needs to be fed.

Why should we eat a healthy diet?: Eating healthier foods can help you feel happy and strong so you can do the things you love. Being healthy is about having energy so you can concentrate at school, play with your friends and do your favourite activities. It can help you grow strong muscles and do amazing things with your body.

(Note: I did not talk about weight at all. Because real health isn’t about what someone weighs, it’s about so much more).

Section 2. HUNGER

What is hunger?: I asked the kids… And then let them explain it to me.

  • Why do you think you get hungry?
  • What does hunger feel like to you?
  • Can you remember when you last felt hungry?

I explained that being hungry is a natural and amazing thing . It’s your body’s way of telling you when you need more fuel. And it’s really important to listen to your hunger. We identified what hunger feels like. Some answers included: “strange feeling in my tummy”, “sometimes I get hangry when I don’t eat”. “I get tired and sleepy”.

Section 3. BALANCED EATING

I talk about how eating a range of balanced food makes you feel your best.

  • I asked: Do you think it would be healthy if you only ate lollies… Or healthy if you only eat carrots? Why do you think this is?

Eating a healthy balanced diet means our bodies get a mix of all the nutrients it needs – giving us the energy to feel strong and feel happy.

Our bodies are constantly talking to us and giving us clues about how to look after it. Just like when you feel tired, you know it’s time to go to sleep or you know when it’s time to go to the toilet…

I asked: What happens when we eat too many lollies? One little boy explained that over Halloween, his brother ate too much candy and threw up because he felt so sick. I agreed that this is possible.

I explained that we want to eat mostly healthy ‘everyday’ foods but that having lollies ‘sometimes’ was healthy too because that’s balance.

Section 4. EAT THE RAINBOW

I asked the kids: Does anyone know: what is a ‘nutrient’? One little girl explained it’s something in food that is good for us. I agreed. (…and I was impressed!)

Then I asked if you can see nutrients in food? The kids didn’t think you could see nutrients but then I explained that you can see some nutrients! Different colours in food show us different nutrients.

How to eat the rainbow

I had a bag full of fruits and vegetables… One for each colour of the rainbow. I asked six volunteers to come stand next to me in a row, one by one. Each child got to hold onto the vegetable/fruit. And I asked the volunteer to name the item and tell me what colour it is… Then we talked about what each colour was useful for (e.g. red in the same colour as your heart, and it’s good for your heart).

  • Red (red capsicum, red apple, tomatoes)
  • Orange (carrot, orange)
  • Yellow (banana, yellow capsicum, tinned corn)
  • Green (lettuce, cucumber, zucchini)
  • Blue/Purple ((blueberries, eggplant, purple cabbage, red onion, radish, beetroot)
  • Brown (mushrooms, onions, beans)

I brought a bag of ‘party style’ lollies with me. I showed them all the colours and asked if ‘eating the rainbow’ was the same for lollies. They knew it’s not the same! :P

Count colours

I asked them to play a game next time they eat – to count the colours on their plate. I asked when was the last time they ate food? How many colours can they remember eating?

Note: If I had time, I would have asked the kids to draw a plate of food and include as many different coloured foods as they could think of. 

  • How many vegetables should you eat every day?

I got the kids to hold up their fists to the air, like superheroes. I explained that one serve of fruit or vegetables was the size of their fist. As they get bigger, their fist will get bigger.

We talked about how when you’re grown up, it’s awesome to eat 5+ veg and 2+ fruit a day. I didn’t want to confuse them by talking about the recommendation for their age group.

Section 5. TRYING NEW FOODS

I got the kids to stick out their tongues like a lion. They laughed. I explained that your tongue has taste buds, that help you taste the food. And your nose smells different foods too.

As you get older, your taste buds change and develop. So just because you didn’t like a food last time you ate it, doesn’t mean you won’t like it now.

I said you don’t need to finish a bowl of food you don’t want to but it’s a good idea to keep trying foods you didn’t like before in case you now love them.

Section 6. ‘EVERYDAY’ VS ‘SOMETIMES’ FOOD + DRINKING WATER

We talked about everyday foods. I.e. foods you can eat every day to be healthy. I got them to come up with ideas on what was an ‘everyday’ food. e.g. fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, yoghurt…

I explained that eating lollies every day won’t make you feel good. We talked about what ‘sometimes’ food is e.g. lollies, chocolate, cake, cookies, soft drink etc. I explained that this is the kind of food you enjoy at parties with your friends and family.

We talked about why drinking water was healthier than other drinks. I got them to talk about other drinks like soft drinks and juice. I explained that these are ‘sometimes’ drinks, the kind of thing we have on special occasions.

I reiterated by listening to your body was the best thing to do.

Section 7. MOVING WITH ENJOYMENT

I explained that moving your body – gives you energy and helps you have fun and be strong. I said that moving your body should feel good. And that the best way to move your body is in a way that feels fun.

I asked them how they like to move their body in a fun way. We talked about fun ways to be active.

Section 8. BODY RESPECT + GRATITUDE

According to research, little girls become aware of the fact that thinness is desirable at age six. This makes me so sad. But it’s also the reason I wanted to have this conversation.

We talked about respecting your body and being grateful for what it can do. I explained that different bodies look different and each body has a different strength. We need to take care of our body and appreciate the wonderful things our own body can do. And also, to respect that other people’s bodies will look and be different from ours – and this is what makes us all special.

I asked for a volunteer to come up and tell me what she was grateful for her body for doing.

She said she was grateful for the colours she could see, that her legs could take her places and that her body helped her learn. It was awesome. I felt proud.

If I had too much time on my hand, I had a few questions I was going to ask:

  • What healthy food do you like to eat?
  • What are popular foods made from: ketchup, pizza, nuggets, chips, lollies etc.

Question time

For the last 5 minutes of the class, I asked if anyone had questions. There were lots of questions! And they had the best questions. Here are a few:

  • Yellow and red and green capsicums are different colours. Does that mean they have different nutrients? Amazing question!
  • White and brown are colours. So If my plate has mashed potatoes, chicken and white rice, does this mean I’m eating the rainbow?
  • How did you become someone who teaches people how to eat healthily?
  • My dad said that salmon and fish have something special in them that we can’t get from anywhere else. Is this right?

Great questions, right?! I was so impressed.

The Impacts of Junk Food on Health

Energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods, otherwise known as junk foods, have never been more accessible and available. Young people are bombarded with unhealthy junk-food choices daily, and this can lead to life-long dietary habits that are difficult to undo. In this article, we explore the scientific evidence behind both the short-term and long-term impacts of junk food consumption on our health.

Introduction

The world is currently facing an obesity epidemic, which puts people at risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. Junk food can contribute to obesity and yet it is becoming a part of our everyday lives because of our fast-paced lifestyles. Life can be jam-packed when you are juggling school, sport, and hanging with friends and family! Junk food companies make food convenient, tasty, and affordable, so it has largely replaced preparing and eating healthy homemade meals. Junk foods include foods like burgers, fried chicken, and pizza from fast-food restaurants, as well as packaged foods like chips, biscuits, and ice-cream, sugar-sweetened beverages like soda, fatty meats like bacon, sugary cereals, and frozen ready meals like lasagne. These are typically highly processed foods , meaning several steps were involved in making the food, with a focus on making them tasty and thus easy to overeat. Unfortunately, junk foods provide lots of calories and energy, but little of the vital nutrients our bodies need to grow and be healthy, like proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Australian teenagers aged 14–18 years get more than 40% of their daily energy from these types of foods, which is concerning [ 1 ]. Junk foods are also known as discretionary foods , which means they are “not needed to meet nutrient requirements and do not belong to the five food groups” [ 2 ]. According to the dietary guidelines of Australian and many other countries, these five food groups are grains and cereals, vegetables and legumes, fruits, dairy and dairy alternatives, and meat and meat alternatives.

Young people are often the targets of sneaky advertising tactics by junk food companies, which show our heroes and icons promoting junk foods. In Australia, cricket, one of our favorite sports, is sponsored by a big fast-food brand. Elite athletes like cricket players are not fuelling their bodies with fried chicken, burgers, and fries! A study showed that adolescents aged 12–17 years view over 14.4 million food advertisements in a single year on popular websites, with cakes, cookies, and ice cream being the most frequently advertised products [ 3 ]. Another study examining YouTube videos popular amongst children reported that 38% of all ads involved a food or beverage and 56% of those food ads were for junk foods [ 4 ].

What Happens to Our Bodies Shortly After We Eat Junk Foods?

Food is made up of three major nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. There are also vitamins and minerals in food that support good health, growth, and development. Getting the proper nutrition is very important during our teenage years. However, when we eat junk foods, we are consuming high amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which are quickly absorbed by the body.

Let us take the example of eating a hamburger. A burger typically contains carbohydrates from the bun, proteins and fats from the beef patty, and fats from the cheese and sauce. On average, a burger from a fast-food chain contains 36–40% of your daily energy needs and this does not account for any chips or drinks consumed with it ( Figure 1 ). This is a large amount of food for the body to digest—not good if you are about to hit the cricket pitch!

  • The carbohydrates of a burger are mainly from the bun, while the protein comes from the beef patty. Large amounts of fat come from the cheese and sauce. Based on the Australian dietary guidelines, just one burger can be 36% of the recommended daily energy intake for teenage boys aged 12–15 years and 40% of the recommendations for teenage girls 12–15 years.

A few hours to a few days after eating rich, heavy foods such as a burger, unpleasant symptoms like tiredness, poor sleep, and even hunger can result ( Figure 2 ). Rather than providing an energy boost, junk foods can lead to a lack of energy. For a short time, sugar (a type of carbohydrate) makes people feel energized, happy, and upbeat as it is used by the body for energy. However, refined sugar , which is the type of sugar commonly found in junk foods, leads to a quick drop in blood sugar levels because it is digested quickly by the body. This can lead tiredness and cravings [ 5 ].

  • In the short-term, junk foods can make you feel tired, bloated, and unable to concentrate. Long-term, junk foods can lead to tooth decay and poor bowel habits. Junk foods can also lead to obesity and associated diseases such as heart disease. When junk foods are regularly consumed over long periods of time, the damages and complications to health are increasingly costly.

Fiber is a good carbohydrate commonly found in vegetables, fruits, barley, legumes, nuts, and seeds—foods from the five food groups. Fiber not only keeps the digestive system healthy, but also slows the stomach’s emptying process, keeping us feeling full for longer. Junk foods tend to lack fiber, so when we eat them, we notice decreasing energy and increasing hunger sooner.

Foods such as walnuts, berries, tuna, and green veggies can boost concentration levels. This is particularly important for young minds who are doing lots of schoolwork. These foods are what most elite athletes are eating! On the other hand, eating junk foods can lead to poor concentration. Eating junk foods can lead to swelling in the part of the brain that has a major role in memory. A study performed in humans showed that eating an unhealthy breakfast high in fat and sugar for 4 days in a row caused disruptions to the learning and memory parts of the brain [ 6 ].

Long-Term Impacts of Junk Foods

If we eat mostly junk foods over many weeks, months, or years, there can be several long-term impacts on health ( Figure 2 ). For example, high saturated fat intake is strongly linked with high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, which can be a sign of heart disease. Respected research studies found that young people who eat only small amounts of saturated fat have lower total cholesterol levels [ 7 ].

Frequent consumption of junk foods can also increase the risk of diseases such as hypertension and stroke. Hypertension is also known as high blood pressure and a stroke is damage to the brain from reduced blood supply, which prevents the brain from receiving the oxygen and nutrients it needs to survive. Hypertension and stroke can occur because of the high amounts of cholesterol and salt in junk foods.

Furthermore, junk foods can trigger the “happy hormone,” dopamine , to be released in the brain, making us feel good when we eat these foods. This can lead us to wanting more junk food to get that same happy feeling again [ 8 ]. Other long-term effects of eating too much junk food include tooth decay and constipation. Soft drinks, for instance, can cause tooth decay due to high amounts of sugar and acid that can wear down the protective tooth enamel. Junk foods are typically low in fiber too, which has negative consequences for gut health in the long term. Fiber forms the bulk of our poop and without it, it can be hard to poop!

Tips for Being Healthy

One way to figure out whether a food is a junk food is to think about how processed it is. When we think of foods in their whole and original forms, like a fresh tomato, a grain of rice, or milk squeezed from a cow, we can then start to imagine how many steps are involved to transform that whole food into something that is ready-to-eat, tasty, convenient, and has a long shelf life.

For teenagers 13–14 years old, the recommended daily energy intake is 8,200–9,900 kJ/day or 1,960 kcal-2,370 kcal/day for boys and 7,400–8,200 kJ/day or 1,770–1,960 kcal for girls, according to the Australian dietary guidelines. Of course, the more physically active you are, the higher your energy needs. Remember that junk foods are okay to eat occasionally, but they should not make up more than 10% of your daily energy intake. In a day, this may be a simple treat such as a small muffin or a few squares of chocolate. On a weekly basis, this might mean no more than two fast-food meals per week. The remaining 90% of food eaten should be from the five food groups.

In conclusion, we know that junk foods are tasty, affordable, and convenient. This makes it hard to limit the amount of junk food we eat. However, if junk foods become a staple of our diets, there can be negative impacts on our health. We should aim for high-fiber foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits; meals that have moderate amounts of sugar and salt; and calcium-rich and iron-rich foods. Healthy foods help to build strong bodies and brains. Limiting junk food intake can happen on an individual level, based on our food choices, or through government policies and health-promotion strategies. We need governments to stop junk food companies from advertising to young people, and we need their help to replace junk food restaurants with more healthy options. Researchers can focus on education and health promotion around healthy food options and can work with young people to develop solutions. If we all work together, we can help young people across the world to make food choices that will improve their short and long-term health.

Obesity : ↑ A disorder where too much body fat increases the risk of health problems.

Processed Food : ↑ A raw agricultural food that has undergone processes to be washed, ground, cleaned and/or cooked further.

Discretionary Food : ↑ Foods and drinks not necessary to provide the nutrients the body needs but that may add variety to a person’s diet (according to the Australian dietary guidelines).

Refined Sugar : ↑ Sugar that has been processed from raw sources such as sugar cane, sugar beets or corn.

Saturated Fat : ↑ A type of fat commonly eaten from animal sources such as beef, chicken and pork, which typically promotes the production of “bad” cholesterol in the body.

Dopamine : ↑ A hormone that is released when the brain is expecting a reward and is associated with activities that generate pleasure, such as eating or shopping.

Peer pressure and TV commercials for junk food can make getting your children to eat well an uphill struggle. Factor in your own hectic schedule and it’s no wonder so many kids’ diets are built around convenience and takeout food. But switching to a healthy diet can have a profound effect on your child’s health, helping them to maintain a healthy weight, stabilize their moods, sharpen their minds, and avoid a variety of health problems. A healthy diet can also have a profound effect on your child’s sense of mental and emotional wellbeing, helping to prevent conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD.

Eating well supports your child’s healthy growth and development into adulthood and may even play a role in lowering their risk of suicide. If your child has already been diagnosed with a mental health problem, a healthy diet can help them to manage the symptoms and regain control of their health.

It’s important to remember that your kids aren’t born with a craving for French fries and pizza and an aversion to broccoli and carrots. This conditioning happens over time as they’re exposed to more and more unhealthy food choices. However, it is possible to reprogram your children’s food preferences so that they crave healthier foods instead.

The sooner you introduce wholesome, nutritious choices into a child’s diet, the easier they’ll be able to develop a healthy relationship with food that can last them a lifetime. And it can be simpler and less time-consuming than you imagine. With these tips, you can instill healthy eating habits without turning mealtimes into a war zone and give your kids the best opportunity to grow into healthy, well-balanced adults.

Whether they’re toddlers or in their teens, children develop a natural preference for the foods they enjoy the most. To encourage healthy eating habits, the challenge is to make nutritious choices appealing.

Focus on overall diet rather than specific foods. Kids should be eating more whole, minimally processed food—food that is as close to its natural form as possible—and less packaged and processed food.

Be a role model.  The childhood impulse to imitate is strong so don’t ask your child to eat vegetables while you eat potato chips. Rather, show your child that you are enjoying a variety of vegetables and diverse meals, as well as limiting your own screen time and participating in physical activity.

Disguise the taste of healthier foods , such as bitter vegetables. Serve vegetables with dips such as ranch, ketchup, hummus, or a cheese sauce to peak their interest. Add blended vegetables to a favorite sauce or beef stew. Or try adding spinach or avocado to a smoothie.

Cook more meals at home. Restaurant and takeout meals have more added sugar and unhealthy fat so cooking at home can have a huge impact on your kids’ health. If you make large batches, cooking just a few times can be enough to feed your family for the whole week.

Get kids involved in shopping for groceries and preparing meals. You can teach them about different foods and how to read food labels.

Make healthy snacks available. Keep plenty of fruit, vegetables, and healthy beverages (water, milk, pure fruit juice) on hand so kids avoid unhealthy snacks like soda, chips, and cookies.

Limit portion sizes. Don’t insist your child cleans the plate, and never use food as a reward or bribe.

Kids who enjoy breakfast every day have better memories, more stable moods and energy, and score higher on tests. Eating a breakfast high in quality protein—from enriched cereal, yogurt, milk, cheese, eggs, meat, or fish—can even help teenagers manage their weight.

  • Breakfast needn’t be time consuming. Boil some eggs at the beginning of the week and offer them to your kids each morning along with a low-sugar, high-protein cereal, and an apple to go.
  • Make breakfast burritos filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, chicken, or beef on a Sunday and freeze them.
  • An egg sandwich, a pot of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, and peanut butter on wholegrain toast can all be eaten on the way to school.
  • High protein pre-made waffles and pancakes, or protein bars are also easy to grab and go on busy mornings.
  • Smoothies with oats, chia seeds, or flaxseed added to fruits and vegetables can provide extra nutrients.

Making time to sit down as a family to eat a home-cooked meal not only sets a great example for kids about the importance of healthy food, it can bring a family together—even moody teenagers love to eat tasty, home-cooked meals!

Regular family meals provide comfort. Knowing the whole family will sit down to eat dinner (or breakfast) together at approximately the same time every day can be very comforting for kids and enhance appetite.

Family meals offer an opportunity to catch up on your kids’ daily lives. Gathering the family around a table for a meal is an ideal opportunity to talk and listen to your kids without the distraction of TV, phones, or computers.

Social interaction is vital for your child. The simple act of talking to a parent over the dinner table about how they feel can play a big role in relieving stress and boosting your child’s mood and self-esteem. And it gives you a chance to identify problems in your child’s life and deal with them early.

Mealtimes enable you to “teach by example.” Eating together lets your kids see you eating healthy food while keeping your portions in check and limiting junk food.  Refrain from obsessive calorie counting or commenting on your own weight, though, so that your kids don’t adopt negative associations with food.

Mealtimes let you monitor your kids’ eating habits. This can be important for older kids and teens who spend a lot of time eating at school or friends’ houses. If your teen’s choices are less than ideal, the best way to make changes is to emphasize short-term consequences of a poor diet, such as physical appearance or athletic ability. These are more important to teens than long-term health. For example, “Calcium will help you grow taller,” or, “Iron will help you do better on tests.”

Limit sugar and refined carbs in your child’s diet

Simple or refined carbohydrates are sugars and refined grains that have been stripped of all bran, fiber, and nutrients—such as white bread, pizza dough, pasta, pastries, white flour, white rice, and many breakfast cereals. They can cause dangerous spikes in blood sugar and fluctuations in mood and energy.

Complex carbs, on the other hand, are usually high in nutrients and fiber and are digested slowly, providing longer-lasting energy. They include whole wheat or multigrain bread, high-fiber cereals, brown rice, beans, nuts, fruit, and non-starchy vegetables.

A child’s body gets all the sugar it needs from that naturally occurring in food. Added sugar just means empty calories that can contribute to hyperactivity, mood disorders, and increase the risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and even suicidal behaviors in teenagers.

How to cut down on sugar

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children 2 years and older consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar daily. Beverages are often a large source of added sugars. For example, a 12-ounce soda contains up to 10 teaspoons or 40g of added sugar, a 20 oz sports drink contains 34 grams of added sugar, and a medium frozen chocolate coffee shake can contains 113 grams of added sugar.

Added sugar can also be hidden in foods such as bread, canned soups and vegetables, frozen dinners, and fast food. In fact, about 75% of packaged food in the U.S. contains added sugar.

Don’t ban sweets entirely. Having a no sweets rule is an invitation for cravings and overindulging when given the chance.

Give recipes a makeover. Many recipes taste just as good with less sugar.

Avoid excess sugary drinks , such as soda, sports drinks, and coffee treats. Instead, try adding a splash of fruit juice to sparkling water or blending whole milk with a banana or berries for a delicious smoothie.

Create your own popsicles and frozen treats. Freeze 100% fruit juice in an ice-cube tray with plastic spoons as popsicle handles. Or make frozen fruit kabobs using pineapple chunks, bananas, grapes, and berries.

Avoid foods that impair your child’s mood

  • A diet high in processed foods, such as fried food, sweet desserts, sugary snacks, refined flour and cereals can increase the risk for anxiety and depression in kids.
  • Kids who drink four or more cups of soda or sweetened fruit drinks a day—including diet versions—have a higher risk for depression .
  • Caffeine from soda, energy drinks, or coffee drinks can trigger anxiety in kids and aggravate feelings of depression.

Fast food is typically high in sugar, unhealthy fat, and calories and low in nutrients. Still, junk food is tempting for kids, so instead of eliminating it entirely, try to cut back on the times your kids eat fast food and, on the times that they do, make the healthiest choices possible.

Eating out with kids

Skip the fries. Instead, take along a bag of mini carrots, grapes, or other fruits and vegetables.

Watch portion size. Stick to the children’s menu or go for the smallest size. Order pizza by the slice—it will satisfy your child’s craving without tempting overindulgence.

Order the kid’s meal with substitutions. Children often love the kid’s meal more for the toys than the food. Ask to substitute healthier choices for the soda and fries.

Opt for chicken and vegetables in a sit-down restaurant, rather than a big plate of macaroni and cheese.

Be wise about sides. Sides that can quickly send calories soaring include fries, chips, rice, noodles, onion rings, and biscuits. Better bets are grilled vegetables, side salads, baked potato, corn on the cob, or apple slices.

Kids need healthy fats —and plenty of them—in their diet. Healthy fat helps kids fill up (and stay full), concentrate better, and improves their mood.

Monounsaturated fats, from olive oil, avocados, nuts (like almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans), and seeds (such as pumpkin, sesame).

Polyunsaturated fats, including Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish, such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and sardines, or in flaxseed and walnuts.

Unhealthy fats

Trans fats are found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, candies, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods made with “partially hydrogenated” vegetable oils (even if they claim to be trans-fat-free). No amount of trans fat is safe.

Picky eaters are going through a normal developmental stage. Just as it takes numerous repetitions for advertising to convince an adult consumer to buy, it takes most children 8-10 presentations of a new food before they will openly accept it.

Instead of simply insisting your child eat a new food:

  • Offer a new food only when your child is hungry; limit snacks throughout the day.
  • Present only one new food at a time.
  • Make it fun: cut the food into unusual shapes or create a food collage (broccoli florets for trees, cauliflower for clouds, yellow squash for a sun).
  • Serve new foods with favorite foods to increase acceptance. Add vegetables to their favorite soup, for example.
  • Have your child help prepare meals—they’ll be more willing to eat something they helped to make.
  • Limit beverages and snacks, to avoid filling up between mealtimes.

Whether picky eaters or not, kids don’t always want what’s healthy for them—especially fruit and vegetables. But there are ways to make them more enticing.

The first step is to limit access to unhealthy sweets and salty snacks. It’s much easier to convince your child that an apple with peanut butter is a treat if there are no cookies available. Here are some more tips for adding more fruits and veggies to your child’s diet:

Let your kids pick the produce. It can be fun for kids to see all the different kinds of fruits and veggies available, and to pick our new ones or old favorites to try.

Sneak vegetables into other foods. Add grated or shredded veggies to stews and sauces to make them blend in. Make cauliflower “mac” and cheese. Or bake some zucchini bread or carrot muffins.

Keep lots of fresh fruit and veggie snacks on hand. Make sure they’re already washed, cut up, and ready to go. Add yogurt, nut butter, or hummus for extra protein.

GMOS and pesticides: Keeping your children safe

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are mainly engineered to make food crops resistant to herbicides or to produce an insecticide. Since children’s brains and bodies are still developing, they are more sensitive to these toxins. Eating organic produce has been shown to reduce pesticide levels in kids, but tends to be more expensive.

So how can you keep your children safe if you’re on a budget? The most important thing is to feed your kids plenty of fruits and vegetables, whether they’re organic or conventionally grown—the benefits far outweigh the risks.

  • When possible, go organic for fruits and vegetables that you don’t peel before eating, such as berries, lettuce, tomatoes and apples. Choose conventional produce for thick-skinned fruit and veggies like oranges, bananas, and avocados.
  • Explore local farmers’ markets for less expensive organic produce, or join a local crop share.
  • Scrub conventionally grown produce with a brush. Washing won’t remove pesticides taken up by the roots and stem, but will remove pesticide residue.
  • When buying meat, choose organic, grass-fed whenever your budget allows. Choosing cheaper cuts of organic meat may be safer (and no more expensive) than prime cuts of industrially raised meat.

Don’t ignore weight problems

Children who are substantially overweight are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, poor self-esteem, and long-term health problems in adulthood.

Addressing weight problems in children requires a coordinated plan of physical activity and healthy nutrition.

The goal is to slow or halt weight gain (not weight loss, unless directed by your child’s doctor), thereby allowing your child to grow into their ideal weight.

Don’t fall into the low-fat trap. Because fat is so dense in calories, a little can go a long way in making kids feel full and keeping them feeling fuller for longer.

Eating a breakfast high in quality protein —from enriched cereal, yogurt, milk, cheese, eggs, meat, or fish—can help overweight teenagers eat fewer calories throughout the rest of the day.

Encourage exercise

The benefits of lifelong exercise are abundant and regular exercise can even help motivate your kids to make healthy food choices.

  • Play with your kids. Throw around a football; go cycling, skating, or swimming; take family walks and hikes.
  • Help your kids find activities they enjoy by showing them different possibilities.

Kids and teens in the U.S. get the majority of their calories from ultra-processed foods like frozen pizza, microwavable meals, chips and cookies, a new study has found.

Two-thirds — or 67% — of calories consumed by children and adolescents in 2018 came from ultra-processed foods, a jump from 61% in 1999, according to a peer-reviewed study published in the medical journal JAMA . The research, which analyzed the diets of 33,795 youths ages 2 to 19 across the U.S., noted the "overall poorer nutrient profile" of the ultra-processed foods.

"This is particularly worrisome for children and adolescents because they are at a critical life stage to form dietary habits that can persist into adulthood," says Fang Fang Zhang , the study's senior author and a nutrition and cancer epidemiologist at Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and policy. "A diet high in ultra-processed foods may negatively influence children's dietary quality and contribute to adverse health outcomes in the long term."

One reason for the increase may be the convenience of ultra-processed foods, Zhang says. Industrial processing, such as changing the physical structure and chemical composition of foods, not only gives them a longer shelf life but also a more appetizing taste.

"Things like sugar, corn syrup, some hemp oil and other ingredients that we usually don't usually use in our kitchen, that are extracted from foods and synthesized in the laboratory, those are being added in the final product of ultra-processed foods," Zhang said. "A purpose of doing this is to make them highly palatable. So kids will like those foods that somehow make it hard to resist."

During the same two-decade period when the study data was collected, the consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods decreased to 23.5% from 28.8%, the study found.

The greatest increase in calories came from ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat meals such as pizza, sandwiches and hamburgers, rising to 11.2% of calories from 2.2%. Packaged sweet snacks and treats such as cakes and ice cream were a runner-up, which made up 12.9% of calorie consumption in 2018, compared with 10.6% in 1999.

When broken down by race and ethnicity, the growth in consumption of ultra-processed foods was significantly higher for Black, non-Hispanic youth, compared to white, non-Hispanic youths. The study also noted that Mexican American youths consumed ultra-processed foods at a persistently lower rate, which the researchers said may indicate more home cooking by Hispanic families.

The study also found that the education levels of parents or family income didn't affect consumption of ultra-processed foods, suggesting that these types of foods are common in many households.

But the responsibility for tackling this problem shouldn't fall only on parents, Zhang says.

While she would encourage parents and children to consider "replacing ultra-processed foods with minimally and unprocessed foods," Zhang says changes at the policy level are needed "to achieve a broader and more sustainable impact."
