Engineering Dissertation Topics

A dissertation (or a final year project report) is a comprehensive technical report of the research work carried out. A dissertation must present some new, original concepts that lead to further research. The core area of a dissertation consists of a hypothesis (or a research question) upon which an investigation is conducted and, in most cases, inevitably leads to further research. A dissertation must be focused, concise and must address the research topics at every level. A thesis or dissertation is a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author’s research and findings. In some contexts, the word “thesis” or a cognate is used for part of a bachelor’s or master’s course, while “dissertation” is normally applied to a doctorate, while in other contexts, the reverse is true. The term graduate thesis is sometimes used to refer to both master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Dissertations and theses may be considered to be grey literature. Engineering report writing is a crucial part of seminar and thesis submission, one has to invest his time and commitment to come out with an excellent report.

Undergraduate Programs

Civil engineers design the infrastructure of our modern society. Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow by 7% between 2021 and 2031, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our researchers are at the forefront of civil engineering innovation, studying advances in bridge design and evaluation; composite material use in concrete and steel; field study and modeling of coastal processes; intelligent transportation systems; disaster science; and sustainability.

Our program prepares today’s students to be tomorrow’s civil engineers through a required core of courses in math, science and engineering. Starting spring of junior year, students take technical electives in focus areas of structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, railroad, and ocean and coastal engineering. Minors in environmental engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental sustainability are also offered.

Our active research programs and faculty involvement in professional societies ensures that the content of the undergraduate program is current, maintained at a challenging technical level and integrates discovery learning. Opportunities abound for undergraduates to work with faculty and graduate students as research assistants, either for pay or independent study credit. Students may also choose to participate in our co-op program, gaining industry experience while remaining on a four-year path to graduation.

Did you know that our civil engineering program is more than 125 years old?

Make your ambitions a reality.

FOSTERING EPISTEMIC JUSTICE: THE JOURNEY OF A SECRET NINJA YOGA TEACHER IN INTEGRATING ARTS AND ENGINEERING INTO CURRICULAR DESIGN

In contemporary engineering education landscapes, integrating the arts and engineering often adopts a utilitarian lens, emphasizing the enhancement of engineers' creativity or the aesthetic embellishment of final solutions. However, this narrow perspective overlooks the profound potential of the arts in co-creating meaningful solutions, perpetuating epistemic injustices by relegating the arts and other ways of knowing to mere complements of technical knowledge. In this seminar, I present the findings of an autoethnographic inquiry aimed at disrupting traditional disciplinary boundaries within engineering design education. I explore novel educational paradigms by integrating arts and engineering to challenge the notion of engineering as the exclusive owner of problem-solving knowledge.

Through the lens of autoethnography, I engage in reflective analysis of my role as a curriculum and instructional designer endeavoring to integrate the arts and engineering in pursuit of epistemic justice for the arts. Four distinct curricular initiatives are studied: the Compassionate Engineering course for undergraduate engineering students, the Shadow Puppetry Box activity for middle-school students within a summer camp setting, the Elegance in Engineering module for graduate-level engineering education, and the Social Justice and Civil Engineering module designed for undergraduate civil engineering students. By crafting autoethnographic artifacts such as video reflections and video art, I embrace reflexivity and introspection, elucidating the critical considerations and obstacles encountered in designing for epistemic justice through arts-engineering integration. Additionally, I explore how the learning design process facilitated the development of comprehensive and impactful curricula. I also examine the outcomes and implications of implementing these emergent curricula on pedagogical approaches and student learning experiences.

This study provides a space for reflection, inquiry, and inspiration, inviting participants to challenge conventional disciplinary boundaries, interrogate prevailing engineering paradigms, and envision transformative approaches to interdisciplinary education. By embracing the complexities of arts-engineering integration, I endeavor to forge new pathways toward inclusive and equitable educational practices, reshaping the education landscape for the better.

School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences

David freedman recognized for ten years of service as department chair for eees, august 13, 2024.

Colleagues, alumni, and friends gathered for a celebration of David Freedman’s ten years of service as Chair of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (EEES). The event was held on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Clemson University’s Outdoor Lab. It was an excellent opportunity to gather in a casual setting and remember all the good Dr. Freedman has done for the past decade.

Participants played outdoor games and mingled, ate a barbecue dinner, and enjoyed the pavilion at Clemson’s Outdoor Lab on a quiet Summer afternoon. They heard from Dr. Jesus de la Garza, Director of the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences, who thanked David for his hard work over the years. Cindy Lee, a faculty member and outgoing Chair of the Department of Engineering & Science Education, spoke of the many years she and David have interacted through research and teaching, since her time as a young faculty member in EEES. Sudeep Popat talked about being the first faculty member hired under David’s leadership, and appreciating his mentorship as he rose to the Associate Professor rank. David Ladner told stories of Dr. Freedman’s late night emails, passion for being heavily involved on student thesis and dissertation committees, and the open and honest communication everyone had with Dr. Freedman as chair.

Dr. Freedman addressed the group and thanked everyone for their support. All consequential leadership positions have their ups and downs, but overall he loved being Chair of EEES and enjoyed serving the faculty and students. He was presented with a basketball signed by faculty, staff, and students, and with a gift-wrapped case of Diet Coke, his favorite beverage (that many could hear him popping open in the afternoon at Rich Lab over the years).

Dr. Freedman will remain on the faculty for a couple more years until he fully retires. He is replaced by Dr. Debora Frigi Rodrigues, who we are excited to have joining us on August 15, 2024 as the new chair for the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences.
