'Fatafati' Review: Abir-Ritabhari's film is a refreshing take on body positivity

‘Will it even fit you?’, ‘Oh, you won’t get it this size’, ‘Sit on this side of the auto to balance it out’, ‘Another serving?’ – Sentences like these might sound just normal but not to the person it is targeted towards. Body shaming, body stereotypes are way beyond meagre subtle matters. It pinches like a needle to those targeted. That’s what Abir Chatterjee and Ritabhari Chakraborty’s film ‘Fatafati’ was aimed at. But was it done the right way or did it turn preachy? Let’s discuss.

Abir Chatterjee AKA Bachaspati is a middle-class salesperson at a clothing shop. He is synonymous with ‘husband goals’ and loves his wife Phullora (Ritabhari Chakraborty), irrespective of how she and others feel about her. She perfectly fits into the ‘bouma’ card and is a tailoring expert. She has a loving husband and non-problematic mother-in-law but has to hear a few taunts here and there. But, by now, she has developed the habit of taking things with a pinch of salt. But. She is obese and life ain’t easy. The auto driver refuses her as a passenger and a neighbourhood fashion influencer (Biki Sen) is idealised by all because she fits into the ‘perfect figure’ bill. But is life only around weight? That’s where stereotypes seep in.

The first half of the film lays the foundation for an evolved second half. Phullora is body shamed, and ridiculed but has found her own tribe in women with similar weight issues. However, one thing that sets Phullora apart is her will to take charge of her life and a supportive husband. She takes on life as it comes and steadily becomes an influencer, who cleverly hides under the garb of masks and fans to share her take on body positivity. The second half of the film is where the meat lies.

Abir Chatterjee, famous for his intense roles, slips with ease into the shoes of a soft-spoken introvert. He is exceptional when showcasing the emotional growth of his character when he encounters Phullora, who instills in him an appreciation for real beauty and unconventionality. As for Ritabhari, the actress has put in a class act and has made the film her own. Already known for her spellbinding performances, she stands tall with her confident portrayal of a body-positive character and deals with her emotions with subtlety and depth.

‘Fatafati’ is a decent deviation from usual films on body image issues and body positivity that you see. The film pushes boundaries by tackling societal norms about physical appearance and size. It builds a captivating narrative around self-acceptance and love, conveying to the audience that beauty is not skin-deep and is subjective, changing with individual perspectives. By representing a plus-size protagonist in a refreshing, positive light, the creators challenge the stigmas and body-shaming culture perpetuated by society.

The film's dedication to presenting a potent message about body positivity is indeed praiseworthy. Its carefully crafted script integrates humour and romance with social issues, leading to a wholesome cinematic experience. Supporting actors provide the necessary depth, enhancing the overall viewing experience with their stellar performances.

However, 'Fatafati' does have a few shortcomings. The excessive number of songs and lengthy discussions on weight issues take away from the overall impact of the film. Additionally, the portrayal of plus-sized women as only good-hearted friends rather than exploring greater diversity in their characters is a missed opportunity.

In conclusion, 'Fatafati' would have been a total fatafati (fantastic) film, if not for a few misses. But full marks to director Aritra Mukherjee and makers Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy for attempting a film on body positivity, addressing body image candidly.

‘Fatafati’ is more than just a tale of platonic love; it is a story of fighting body image issues and finding self-acceptance. This film shows that it's crucial to look beyond societal norms and appreciate the beauty within. If you are in the mood for some wholesome Bengali entertainment, coupled with family drama, and of course, your love for Abir or Ritabhari, then the film surely deserves a chance, for how wholesome it is!

Ritabhari Chakraborty shines brighter than ever in her latest body positive film, ‘Fatafati’

Ritabhari Chakraborty ‘s much-awaited Fatafati recently witnessed a theatrical release and has received nothing but praise from audiences of all age groups. The film has surpassed the expectations of every viewer, and Ritabhari has delivered beyond what was expected from her.

Instead of opting for fake body makeup, prosthetics and more, Ritabhari opted to gain 25 kilos to fit into the character and express real unfiltered emotions on-screen. When Satram Ramani's Double XL , addressing body shaming was released last year, it failed to make an impact. But Aritra Mukherjee's Bengali film Fatafati which also talks about fat-shaming, is sensitive and moving, among many other things. Starring Ritabhari Chakraborty and Abir Chatterjee , Fatafati is an empowering watch that teaches you that you're beyond your bodily "flaws." The film is now streaming on SonyLIV .

A small-town tailor who becomes an influencer

Phullora (Chakraborty) is a tailor who stitches women's blouses. She may be on the heavier side but there's no dearth in her love for the art of stitching, and wanting to fulfill her dreams. From being body shamed by her neighbor Biki and a cycle-autorickshaw driver to becoming a plus-sized influencer with her brother-in-law's support; the film is the " fatafati (brilliant)" story of Phullora.

Chakraborty owns this piece of art

From the first weighing-machine scene to the bold ramp walk, It's a complete Chakraborty film. Her screen presence is so strong that by the end of it, you'll fall for her. Chakraborty, who gained 25 kgs for the film, is the queen bee who will leave you with a wow factor. Being my first Bengali film ever, Chakraborty sure has impressed me.

The Bengali drama comes with romance and humor

Fatafati is a lot more than just raising awareness regarding body shaming. It teaches you humility, acceptance, and respect. But more than its sensitive and warm screenplay, it never becomes overly nagging or preachy. What adds to the fun is the hint of comedy and romance that has been nicely infused in the script, making it a complete package.

Chatterjee is a 'dream husband'

Chatterjee, who essays the role of Bachaspati (Phullora's husband), loves and supports his wife. He is always encouraging and comes off as every woman's "dream husband." But, it was Raktim Samanta as Gogol, who won my heart. His moments with Chakraborty are endearing. Swastika Dutta as Biki is so annoying and mean to Phullora, that you'd have to admire her acting.

Areas where the film lagged

One of the aspects where Mukherjee lost points, is in the film's editing. The first half seems too stretched, to the extent that you may lose interest. Although it picks up pace later, there are some scenes related to Phullora's popularity that seem far-fetched. The four songs seemed forceful; they could've been deleted, eventually cutting on the film's time.

More than acting, the film's beauty lies in its writing

The film was originally released in the theaters in May. However, its screening was mostly limited to West Bengal. But now that it's out on OTT , you shouldn't skip watching it. The things that stayed with me are its beautiful writing, realistic art direction, and of course, the messages it delivered through its story. Verdict: 3 out of 5 stars .

ಇನ್ನು 'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ' ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಹಾನ್, ಅಂಕಿತಾ ಅಮರ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಯೂರಿ ನಟರಾಜ್ ನಟಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸ್ಟಾರ್ ಕಾಸ್ಟ್ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ, ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರು ಕೈ ಹಿಡಿದರೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಸ್ಟಾರ್‌ಗಳಾಗಿ ಮರೆಯಬಹುದು. ಇನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿತ್ ಶೆಟ್ಟಿ ಪ್ರೊಡಕ್ಷನ್ ಅಂದ್ಮೇಲೆ ಕ್ವಾಲಿಟಿ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕಾಂಪ್ರೈಸ್ ಇರಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಕೂಡ ಅದೇ ಫೀಲ್ ಕೊಡುತ್ತೆ.

'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ' ಅಂತಹ ಮ್ಯೂಸಿಕಲ್ ಡ್ರಾಮವನ್ನು ತೆರೆಮೇಲೆ ತಂದಿರೋದು ಚಂದ್ರಜಿತ್ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯಪ್ಪ. ಇಂತಹದ್ದೊಂದು ಪ್ರೇಮಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರ ಪಾಲಿಗೆ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರೇ ಹೀರೋ ಆಗಬಹುದು. ಕ್ಯಾಮರಾಮ್ಯಾನ್, ಮ್ಯೂಸಿಕ್ ಡೈರೆಕ್ಟರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಡಬಹುದು. ಸರಿ, 'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ' ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಹೇಗಿದೆ? ಅಂತ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಮಾಡೋರಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಉತ್ತರ.

ಏನಿವರ ಕಥೆ?

ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಟೀಸರ್, ಟ್ರೈಲರ್ ನೋಡಿರುವವರಿಗೆ ಈ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಒಬ್ಬ ನಾಯಕ, ಇಬ್ಬರು ನಾಯಕಿಯರ ಕಥೆ ಇರಬಹುದು ಅನ್ನೋ ಅನುಮಾನ ಮೂಡಿತ್ತು. ಅದು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಸತ್ಯ. ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ್ (ವಿಹಾನ್) ಕೊಟ್ಯಾಧಿಪತಿಯ ಮಗ. ಅನಾಹಿತಾ (ಅಂಕಿತಾ ಅಮರ್) ಬೆಂಗಾಲಿ ಹುಡುಗಿ. ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ರಾಧೆ (ಮಯೂರಿ ನಟರಾಜ್). ಇಡೀ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಈ ಮೂರು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತೆ. 7 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗಿರುವ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಂಕಿತಾ ಅಮರ್ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ರಾಧೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ್‌ಗೆ ಅನಾಹಿತ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಾ? ರಾಧೆಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ್ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಾನಾ? ಅನ್ನೋದೇ 'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ' ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಒಂದೆಳೆ ಕಥೆ.

ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕನ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಮಾರ್ಕ್ಸ್

'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ' ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡಿ ಹೊರಬಂದ್ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಚಂದ್ರಜಿತ್ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯಪ್ಪ ಹೀರೋ ಅನಿಸಬಹುದು. ಒಂದು ಸಿಂಪಲ್ ಕಥೆಗೆ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲೇಬೇಕು. ಹೀರೋ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನವನ್ನಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ವೇಳೆ ಸ್ಕ್ರೀನ್ ಪ್ಲೇನಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಸ್ಟ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಪ್ರೆಸೆಂಟ್ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಮುಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಿಗೆ ಸಾಥ್ ಕೊಡೋದು ಛಾಯಾಗ್ರಾಹಕ ಶ್ರೀವತ್ಸನ್. ಒಂದೊಂದು ಫ್ರೇಮ್ ಪೇಂಟಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡಿದಂತಿದೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಗಗನ್ ಬದೇರಿಯಾ ಅವರ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಸಂಗೀತ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಾಡುಗಳು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕನ ಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಸಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ತಾಂತ್ರಿಕ ವರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮೂವರು ಹೈಲೈಟ್ ಆಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ವಿಹಾನ್, ಅಂಕಿತಾ, ಮಯೂರಿ ನಡುವೆ ಪೈಪೋಟಿ

'ಇಬ್ಬನಿ ತಬ್ಬಿದ ಇಳೆಯಲಿ'ಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಟಿಸಿದ ವಿಹಾನ್, ಅಂಕಿತಾ ಅಮರ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಯೂರಿ ನಟರಾಜ್ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಸಿನಿಮಾ ನೋಡಿ ಹೊರಬಂದ ಮೇಲೂ ಕಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ವಿಹಾನ್ ಅಭಿನಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಬುದ್ಧತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತೆ. ಹಿಂದಿನ ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳನ್ನು ಮರೆತು ನೋಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೆ. ನಟಿ ಮಯೂರಿ ನಟರಾಜ್‌ಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಸ್ಕ್ರೀನ್ ಸ್ಪೇಸ್. ಆದರೆ, ತಮ್ಮ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ತಿಂದು ಹಾಕಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಾಲಿ ಹುಡುಗಿಯಾಗಿ ಅಂಕಿತಾ ಅಮರ್ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕರ ಫೇವರಿಟ್ ಆಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಮೂವರು ಸಿನಿಮಾದ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಪಿಲ್ಲರ್.
