As a result of Wöhler’s research, the definition of organic chemistry changed. The new definition was based on the observation that every compound discovered in living organisms had one property in common: they all contained the element carbon. As a result, the modern definition of organic chemistry—as the study of carbon compounds—was adopted.

Organic and Inorganic Chemistry

One important point that Wöhler’s research showed was that the principles and techniques of chemistry apply equally well to compounds found in living organisms and in nonliving things. Nonetheless, some important differences between organic and inorganic (not organic) compounds exist. These include the following:

  • The number of organic compounds vastly exceeds the number of inorganic compounds. The ratio of carbon-based compounds to noncarbon- based compounds is at least ten to one, with close to 10 million organic compounds known today. The reason for this dramatic difference is a special property of the carbon atom: its ability to join with other carbon atoms in very long chains, in rings, and in other kinds of geometric arrangements. It is not at all unusual for dozens, hundreds, or thousands of carbon atoms to bond to each other within a single compound—a property that no other element exhibits.
  • In general, organic compounds tend to have much lower melting and boiling points than do inorganic compounds.
  • In general, organic compounds are less likely to dissolve in water than are inorganic compounds.
  • Organic compounds are likely to be more flammable but poorer conductors of heat and electricity than are inorganic compounds.
  • Organic reactions tend to take place more slowly and to produce a much more complex set of products than do inorganic reactions.

Functional Groups and Organic Families

The huge number of organic compounds requires that some system be developed for organizing them. The criterion on which those compounds are organized is the presence of various functional groups. A functional group is an arrangement of atoms that is responsible for certain characteristic physical and chemical properties in a compound. For example, one such functional group is the hydroxyl group, consisting of an oxygen atom and hydrogen atom joined to each other. It is represented by the formula -OH.

All organic compounds with the same functional group are said to belong to the same organic family. Any organic compound that contains a hydroxyl group, for instance, is called an alcohol. All alcohols are similar to each other in that: (1) they contain one or more hydroxyl groups, and (2) because of those groups, they have similar physical and chemical properties. For example, alcohols tend to be more soluble in water than other organic compounds because the hydroxyl groups in the alcohol form bonds with water molecules.

The simplest organic compounds are the hydrocarbons, compounds that contain only two elements: carbon and hydrogen. The class of hydrocarbons can be divided into subgroups depending on the way in which carbon and hydrogen atoms are joined to each other. In some hydrocarbons, for example, carbon and hydrogen atoms are joined to each other only by single bonds. A single bond is a chemical bond that consists of a pair of electrons. Such hydrocarbons are known as saturated hydrocarbons.

In other hydrocarbons, carbon and hydrogen atoms are joined to each other by double or triple bonds. A double bond consists of two pairs of electrons, and a triple bond consists of three pairs of electrons. Hydrocarbons containing double and triple bonds are said to be unsaturated.

Hydrocarbons can also be open-chain or ring compounds. In an open-chain hydrocarbon, the carbon atoms are all arranged in a straight line, like a strand of spaghetti. In a ring hydrocarbon, the carbons are arranged in a continuous loop, such as a square, a pentagon, or a triangle.

The previous chapters of this textbook have explored different general chemistry topics, including fundamental chemical concepts, theories, and quantities that were subsequently applied to derive important mathematical relationships and determine the properties and reactivity of all of the elements that are represented on the periodic table. In contrast, the current chapter will discuss several topics that are specific to organic chemistry , which is defined as the study of carbon-containing compounds.

Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth and, more importantly, is extremely versatile. Atoms of carbon can form four stable covalent bonds with each other and with many other elements and, consequently, are found in millions of different substances. In particular, most living organisms are primarily composed of organic molecules , which are covalently-bonded chemicals that must be comprised of carbon, C, usually contain hydrogen, H, and can, more rarely, include other non-metals. Because nitrogen, N, oxygen, O, phosphorus, P, sulfur, S, and the halogens, X, are less prevalent in organic molecules, relative to carbon and hydrogen, these eight non-metals, which are all located on the right side of the periodic table, are collectively-known as heteroatoms . Metalloids, such as boron, B, and silicon, Si, are generally not found in organic compounds. Furthermore, since the structures of organic molecules must, by definition, be covalently-bonded, metals and polyatomic ions, which can only bond through ionic interactions, cannot be incorporated into organic materials.

As stated above, millions of molecules contain carbon and, therefore, can be classified as organic. However, many organic materials have distinct characteristics and, consequently, can be further categorized according to the specific elemental composition of, and types of bonds that are present in, their corresponding structures. Hydrocarbons are defined as organic molecules that contain only carbon, C, and hydrogen, H. Because these substances are comprised of only two elements, a relatively small percentage of organic molecules can be classified as hydrocarbons. Additionally, recall that covalent molecules can contain single bonds, double bonds, or triple bonds, which are produced when one, two, or three pairs of electrons, respectively, are shared between the same set of atoms. Because the presence of a double or a triple bond in a structure changes the reactivity of the corresponding molecule, organic molecules that contain these multiple bonds are classified using different terminology, relative to those substances that are solely-comprised of single bonds. Alkanes , alkenes , and alkynes are defined as hydrocarbons that contain only single bonds, one or more double bonds, and one or more triple bonds, respectively. Two-carbon alkane, alkene, and alkyne structures are shown below in the first, second, and third images, respectively, in Figure \(\PageIndex{1}\). Each carbon that is present in these structures is associated with four total bonds, as is typical of organic molecules. However, as the number of bonds that exist between the carbon atoms increases, the relative number of hydrogens that are bonded to each carbon and, therefore, that are found in each molecule, decreases. As a result, alkanes are classified as saturated , because their corresponding structures contain the maximum possible number of hydrogens, and alkenes and alkynes, which contain fewer hydrogens, are categorized as unsaturated . In Chapter 7, these terms were analogously used to describe the amount of solute that is present in a solution, relative to a calculated maximum quantity.

Finally, each of these types of hydrocarbons can be categorized according to their connectivity , which indicates the relative bonding arrangement of the carbon atoms that are contained in the structure. The carbon atoms that are present in a cyclic structure , which often resembles a geometric shape, must connect with one another to form a "ring" that has no discernible "ends." In contrast, an acyclic structure , which can be can be further classified as being linear or branched, cannot contain a "ring." Instead, the atoms that are found within this type of molecule must be connected to one another in a "chain" that has at least two distinctive "ends." In order to be categorized as a linear structure , all of the carbon atoms that are present must be organized in a single "chain" that has exactly two discernible "ends," and a branched structure must contain more than two unique "ends." The top-left, top-right, and bottom images in Figure \(\PageIndex{2}\) show four-carbon alkanes that are connected as cyclic, linear, and branched structures, respectively, and the "end," or terminal, carbons that are present in each structure are indicated in red .

The remaining sections of this chapter will further investigate the structures and reactivity of alkanes, which, due to their limited elemental composition and lack of multiple bonds, can be discussed more comprehensively than other types of organic molecules. Because the structures of alkanes are relatively similar to one another, these chemicals all share several common physical properties, which, as stated in Chapter 3, correspond to the observable, descriptive characteristics of a substance. As stated in Chapter 7, the electron distributions of alkanes and water are dissimilar, and, consequently, these types of chemicals are immiscible , or insoluble , in one another. As a result, a heterogeneous bilayer, in which organic alkanes and water are present as two visually-distinctive liquids, forms when these chemicals are mixed together. Furthermore, because most alkanes have density values that are less than 1.00 g/mL, which is the density of liquid water, these organic substances will be present in the top , or floating , layer in a heterogeneous mixture, as shown below in Figure \(\PageIndex{3}\). Finally, since all hydrocarbons must, by definition, contain carbon, these types of organic materials have similar electron distributions, relative to each other , and, therefore, also do not readily dissolve in water. As a result, liquid alkanes are often used as solvents in which other water-insoluble organic molecules can be dissolved.

Luca Sancineto, PhD, University of Perugia (UNIPG), Italy. Dr. Sancineto got his PhD in Chemistry and Technology of Drugs at the UNIPG in 2012. After postdoctoral positions, and thanks to a Marie Curie Fellowship, he spent two years at the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies (Polish Academy of Science, Lodz). In 2018 he obtained the habilitation as associate professor in medicinal and organic chemistry. In 2019 he was hired by UNIPG as researcher and in 2022 he became associate professor. His main research interests lie in the development of green synthetic procedures and the preparation of pharmacologically active compounds.

Ornelio Rosati, Researcher in Organic Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Perugia, Italy. Dr. Rosati graduated from the University of Perugia (Italy) in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies in 1988. He holds a Ph.D. degree In "Bioecology of entomophages and biocontrol in the agroecosystem" in 1993. He is currently a permanent researcher at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Perugia. His research activity is essentially oriented to the organic synthesis, catalysis, isolation and structural determination of natural compounds and their analogues with potential biological activity.

Regulation on c 2 h 2 /co 2 adsorption and separation by molecular rotors in metal-organic frameworks..

The introduction of molecular rotors with distinct kinetic characteristics into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) imparts these materials with heightened responsiveness, facilitating precise control over gas molecule recognition, adsorption as well as separation. This enhancement translates into improved performance in separating light hydrocarbons. In this investigation, three MOF materials (In-NDC, SNNU-118, and SNNU-128) were synthesized with two molecular rotor-containing ligands, 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1,4-NDC), and 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylic acid (9,10-ADC). Among these materials, In-NDC and SNNU-118 exist as supramolecular isomers. Through meticulous adjustment of synthesis conditions, successful structural transformations were achieved. Unlike In-NDC, the rotational flexibility of the molecular rotor 1,4-NDC endows SNNU-118 with distinctive adsorption behavior, manifesting as a gate-opening effect induced by the rotation of the molecular rotor. This phenomenon is facilitated by electrostatic repulsion between 1,4-NDC and CO 2 during the adsorption process. Additionally, the electrostatic attraction between the framework and C 2 H 2 molecules significantly enhances C 2 H 2 adsorption at low pressure, thereby improving selectivity for C 2 H 2 . Compared to In-NDC, the IAST value increased from 4.55 to 17.05. Dynamic breakthrough experiments demonstrate the effective separation capabilities of both In-NDC and SNNU-118 in separating C 2 H 2 /CO 2 mixed gases.

Researchers create materials with unique combo of stiffness, thermal insulation

Researchers have demonstrated the ability to engineer materials that are both stiff and capable of insulating against heat. This combination of properties is extremely unusual and holds promise for a range of applications, such as the development of new thermal insulation coatings for electronic devices.

"Materials that have a high elastic modulus tend to also be highly thermally conductive, and vice versa," says Jun Liu, co-corresponding author of a paper on the work and an associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University. "In other words, if a material is stiff, it does a good job of conducting heat. And if a material is not stiff, then it is usually good at insulating against heat.

"But there are instances where you'd want materials that are stiff, but are also good insulators," Liu says. "For example, you might want to create thermal insulation coatings to protect electronics from high temperatures. Historically, that's been a challenge.

"We've now discovered a range of materials that are both stiff and excellent thermal insulators. What's more, we can engineer the materials as needed to control how stiff they are and how thermally conductive they are."

Specifically, the researchers were working with a subset of the class of materials called two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (2D HOIP).

"These are thin films consisting of alternating organic and inorganic layers in a highly ordered crystalline structure," says Wei You, co-corresponding author of this paper and professor of chemistry and applied physical sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "And we can tune the composition of either the inorganic or organic layer."

"We found that we can control the elastic modulus and thermal conductivity of some 2D HOIPs by replacing some of the carbon-carbon chains in the organic layers with benzene rings," says Qing Tu, co-corresponding author of this paper and an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Texas A&M University. "Basically -- within this specific subset of layered materials -- the more benzene rings we add, the stiffer the material gets, and the better able it is to insulate against heat."

"While discovering these materials in itself holds tremendous potential for a range of applications, as researchers we are particularly excited because we've identified the mechanism that is responsible for these characteristics -- namely the critical role that the benzene rings play," says Liu.

In experiments, the researchers found at least three distinct 2D HOIP materials that became less thermally conductive the stiffer they got.

"This work is exciting because it suggests a new pathway for engineering materials with desirable combinations of properties," Liu says.

The researchers also discovered another interesting phenomenon with 2D HOIP materials. Specifically, they found that by introducing chirality into the organic layers -- i.e., making the carbon chains in those layers asymmetrical -- they could effectively maintain the same stiffness and thermal conductivity even when making substantial changes to the composition of the organic layers.

"This raises some interesting questions about whether we might be able to optimize other characteristics of these materials without having to worry about how those changes might influence the material's stiffness or thermal conductivity," says Liu.
