School discipline policies and practices are a critical part of creating a school’s overall climate. Choosing harmful practices can result in short and long-term negative impacts on students’ social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD), whereas other, evidence-based practices can support a students’ holistic development and well-being.  

Although the rules may be intended to be applied equally regardless of a student’s race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability status, or other personal characteristic, harmful school discipline policies are often disproportionately used on underserved students, particularly students of color and students with disabilities. Harsh discipline practices, such as corporal punishment, restraint, and seclusion can result in serious and life-threatening physical injuries. These and other practices, such as hardening measures (e.g., metal detectors and school police) and exclusionary discipline (e.g., suspensions and expulsions), create even more academic and psychological harms and have been linked to the school-to-prison pipeline.  

While districts and schools are supposed to reserve these various school discipline policies for serious offenses, many also employ these measures for minor and subjective infractions, including dress and hair code violations , talking in class, truancy, tardiness, “willful defiance,” and more. In many instances, students of color and students with disabilities are targeted for these minor offenses in ways that attack their cultural identity and strip them of their rights to a safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environment.  

Improving School Discipline Beyond Covid-19

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a toll on students’ mental health and well-being. The National Center for Education Statistics found that 56% of school leaders said the pandemic led to increased classroom disruptions from student misbehavior. And 48% said it led to more acts of disrespect toward teachers and staff.  

Even though school leaders have reported a dramatic uptick in students “acting out,” it is not without valid reasons. Whether it’s the devastating impact of losing a loved one, or the disruptions to routines, relationships, and learning environment due to months-long quarantines, the pandemic resulted in economic and health challenges, increased stress, social isolation, and anxiety for students. It’s no surprise the COVID-19 pandemic deeply affected student behavior in school.  

As reports demonstrate , school staff has had increasing challenges with responding to student behavior. While stricter school discipline policies are broadly intended to foster a safe and manageable learning environment, discipline is far too often used in ways that further harm students’ social, emotional, academic, and in some cases, physical and mental health and well-being.  

How to Evaluate a State’s School Discipline Policies

School discipline practices are determined by policies at all levels — federal, state, district, school, and even in individual classrooms. State leaders can have strong influence in how districts adopt and implement school discipline practices and policies by:  

  • Creating clear goals
  • Adopting evidence-based guidance and policies
  • Publicly reporting discipline data

In 2022, building on Ed Trust’s 2020 seminal report titled, Social, Emotional, and Academic Development Through and Equity Lens, in partnership with CASEL, Ed Trust released Is Your State Prioritizing Social, Emotional, and Academic Development? , a 50-state scan that shows how states support the social, emotional, and academic needs of students in their discipline policies, as well as four other key policy areas:

  • Rigorous and culturally sustaining curriculum
  • Student, family, and community engagement
  • Wraparound services

Educators, advocates, and policymakers at all levels of government can use the 50-state scan to evaluate how their state’s school discipline policies compare to other states in holistically creating safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for students.

A crucial part of implementing positive discipline practices with fidelity is ensuring all adults in schools and districts develop a race equity lens with which to implement those skills. A long history of research in school discipline shows that disproportionate disciplinary outcomes for students of color are not due to differential rates of behavior, and that the role of discrimination and bias in discipline outcomes must be taken seriously. Furthermore, research shows that using an approach that is racially and culturally conscious is the key to addressing disparities in discipline. A race-equity approach should therefore be embedded in all actions districts take to address discipline policies and practices.  

For actionable guidance, district leaders can use the toolkit from the Alliance for Resource Equity (ARE), a partnership between Ed Trust and Education Resource Strategies. ARE has developed a series of tools and guidebooks that outline specific actions to create a more equitable student experience, starting with a diagnostic tool that identifies areas for growth in a district’s current policies and practices. Then, district leaders can then reference the guidebook on creating a positive and inviting school climate that demonstrates how to further these goals. In particular, district leaders should consider the following key question in the ARE diagnostic tool and guidebook:  

Does each student experience a safe school with transparent, culturally sensitive, and consistently enforced rules and discipline policies?  

Decisions at the local level can ensure that state and federal discipline policies are implemented with fidelity or can even go beyond current policies by utilizing better or more evidence-based practices. This program will also enhance student’s leadership skills. All stakeholders will play a role in rule making. It will be an annual activity done at every beginning of the academic year. To kick off the process, the following will be done:

  • Creation of Interim Election Board- considering that this is a new plan, Interim Election Board will comprise of teaching staff but majorly students to conduct a free and fair elections of representatives. Most schools appoint representatives based on their academic performance. The Elections Board will be mandated to conduct elections.
  • Establishment of Students’ Representatives Parliament- the elected officials will form a parliament and a member of teaching staff preferably will be the speaker. This is to ensure neutrality. Subcommittees in parliament will be formed and given different roles such as Law making, sports and entertainment. The parliament will also create a permanent Election Board mandated to oversee elections.
  • Law making process- this will be the most important stage of the plan. Students will get involved in drafting rules and regulations. The process will start with parliament committee in charge of laws. The committee will be responsible for collecting student’s views before tabling them in parliament after which they will debate on it.
  • Executive committee- this will be the supreme body in rule making. It will comprise of staff s, students’, non-teaching staff and parents’ representatives. It will be chaired by the school head. They will have the power to finally accept students’ drafted rules, to be made laws of the school.

This plan can also be applicable in a small classroom where every student will take a role in law making. The process will be part of the school’s traditions. Equitability will be ensured by forming a committee that will be responsible for different functions. The program will need evaluation at the end of every academic year, to get changes that can be made. By making the process a school tradition will award the process required consistency. This program is aimed at teaching student’s social responsibility and leadership skill at early stages in development. The school administration, which plays an oversight role, will ensure that high quality rules are formulated and implemented.

Discipline in the school is meant to ensure there is balance and accountability within the school. Rules, regulations, and responsibilities are provided for accountability to be practiced within the school. Examples of popular rules and regulations include; being punctual for school and all classes, respecting other people’s rights and avoiding disturbing or interrupting the class, wearing the correct school uniforms, completing all the assignments, and being cooperative with teachers and the staff.

Punctuality is an essential value for one to be successful. In this case, students should ensure they are always punctual for school and classes to have the ability to plan their schedule and perform their tasks in an orderly manner rather than rushing at the last minute. It also helps students build their confidence before approaching the class for a presentation or an exam. Besides, every student is responsible for creating ample time for other students within that institution. No student is allowed to disturb fellow students who are studying by either making noise or engaging them in unnecessary activities (Rasmitadila et al., 2021). All students are equal to each other and ideally have equal rights in school. No student is allowed to make fellow students feel uncomfortable while in school.

Wearing the correct school uniform is one of the factors that boost one’s self-confidence, helps them develop the pride of belonging to a particular school, and eases the pressures of deciding what to wear while going to school. School uniform also helps enhance the students’ security since whenever they are seen wearing them, every adult feels it is their responsibility to protect them. Lastly, all students are responsible for completing all the assignments and cooperating with their teachers, fellow students, and other staff working within the school. Ideally, this makes it easy for every one of them to operate, and as a result, the students are likely to score good grades. Failure to do that, the school performance might be lower than expected.

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

  • Distance learning: Greater ability to reach out to teacher privately
  • Sum up, emphasize that distance learning introduces more difficulties than it solves
  • Stress the importance of addressing issues with distance learning as it becomes increasingly common
  • Distance learning may prove to be the future, but it still has a long way to go

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

  • Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
  • Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy

  • Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
  • Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
  • Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
  • Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
  • Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

  • This is a long-term solution but could be highly effective
  • It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively
  • Rather than trying to contain the spread of fake news, we must teach the next generation not to fall for it

Signposting means guiding the reader through your essay with language that describes or hints at the structure of what follows.  It can help you clarify your structure for yourself as well as helping your reader follow your ideas.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

I admit it: I allowed students to chew gum in class. Why? Because I chewed gum. I have a throat that tends to get dry after mid-morning, and gum helps.

The point is that if you have a rule, you have to follow it yourself or the kids will question you, and worse, may lose respect. No food allowed in the classroom and you eat a blueberry scone during class every morning? I learned from experience. The beauty of teaching 16- and 17-year-olds is that they don’t often hold back their opinions. Being a model for what we expect is at times inconvenient and exhausting, but it comes with the job.

Follow Through

Rules have consequences, and routines have reminders. What worked for me was far fewer rules and many, many more routines and procedures.

Once you make a rule, you have to stick with it. Students will expect a warning, a second warning, and then a consequence. A rule cannot be treated like a routine ever. If being on time is a classroom rule, for example, when a student walks in 22 seconds late, we can’t say, “I reminded you yesterday about being tardy”—we have to say, “This is a warning and a consequence will follow.” And then, a consequence has to follow if they walk in two seconds late two days later.

All the other students are watching and expecting the follow through. If we just sigh, shake our head, and let it slide, students will not see being on time as a rule. We need to be selective when choosing that small handful of rules because those will need to be enforced.

Choosing Routines to Emphasize

There will be procedures and routines that will take several seconds to go over and others that are more in-depth. The ones that take extra effort to explain and model are often those that are border on being rules, like getting out of your seat.

You’ll want to address all scenarios for getting out of one’s seat: sharpening a pencil, getting supplies or a tissue, turning in work, etc. I always told students, “If you’re up, you are on a mission,” which sets it up nicely: If you see a student wandering a bit or stopping at a classmate’s desk for an off-topic chat, ask, “What’s your mission?” This serves as a gentle reminder. The key word here is reminder —this kind of situation doesn’t need a consequence.

There isn’t really a limit to how many routines and procedures you have, but you’ll need to make sure each one is clear to every learner in your room.

Transparency

Be it a rule or a routine, kids have to know what it looks like, with examples, on day one. If a rule is a general, all-encompassing one like “be respectful to all,” you’ll have to give numerous examples of what that looks like—and what it doesn’t look like.

Have the class brainstorm examples and add a few yourself. Some of the things we expect students to bring up: no name-calling or putdowns, and hands to yourselves. However, students always brainstorm things beyond what we can imagine, so it’s important that they’re part of this process. It gives a keener understanding of the rules for the class collectively.

Every time we decide to involve students in the decision-making or discovery process in the classroom, it takes considerably longer. We’re often tempted to just give them the information. But exploring examples of what the rules and routines look like together gives students ownership around these agreements, which will pay off the entire school year.

The Ultimate Goal

Of course, the ultimate goal of teaching is not enforcing rules and routines but teaching effectively. And when teachers are together, we spend most of our time talking not about classroom management, but about effective teaching. When we’re effective, the majority of kids are learning and getting what they need, goals and objectives are achieved, and we teachers feel an incredible sense of accomplishment.

Setting classroom expectations – by establishing ground rules early on – can help to not only underpin your behavior management plan and ensure prosocial behavior in the classroom.

Perhaps more importantly, it can help create a culture of learning through high expectations for doing your best, turning up ready to learn, and showing respect to one another in the clasroom.

A few years back, I conducted a visual analysis of classroom rules charts in schools in Northern England. Based on that data, I collated some of the most common classroom rules across different classrooms.

So today, I’ll share 27 ways you can set high expectations in the classroom that you should implement in the first two weeks of your new school year in order to promote a productive, safe, and inclusive class environment.

Classroom Expectations for All Ages

1. for preschool and kindergarten.

Rules of Behavior

  • Respectful Interaction : Treat classmates and teachers with kindness and respect at all times.
  • Listening Skills : Listen attentively when others are speaking and wait for your turn to talk.
  • Following Directions : Follow the instructions of teachers and staff promptly and accurately.
  • Sharing and Cooperation : Share resources and work cooperatively with others during group activities.
  • Personal Space and Safety : Respect personal space and practice safe behaviors in the classroom and playground.

Academic Expectations

  • Active Participation : Actively participate in classroom activities and discussions.

Behavior Management Strategies

Behavior management is often the hardest thing for new teachers to master. But without it, the classroom will not have a culture of learning.

You can choose your own strategy to establish classroom norms – from assertive discipline on the conservative end of the spectrum through to the progressive maangement model on the other.

"Respect everyone" is the most important school rule - O level

Explain which of these you think are the most important) Rules, always a part of our lives, which have been imposed on us ever since we were born. School rules are no exceptions either, which can defer greatly from one school to another. The amount of defiant students in schools are rising and fights are occurring more frequently and I believe that most of this attributes to the school rules imposed by the school, which are fairly ineffective. I will be discussing about three school rules in this essay and they are as follow; "School uniforms are mandatory", "Students who are late should be punished severely" and "Respect everyone". I feel that "Respect everyone" is the most important school rule. It is not unusual to see students, especially those in high schools or in junior schools wearing their school uniforms to school everyday. These school uniforms give the students a sense of belonging to the school whereas if for example students wore their own clothes to school every day, it doesn't make the student feel as though they belong to the school at all as wearing school uniforms help to foster unity among their schoolmates and pride towards the school. Moreover, the problem of students wearing sleazy or offensive clothes to school would be eliminated as they are forced to follow the school's dress code. This teaches the students to adhere to dress codes which they have to be following when they grow up to work in the society in the future. "School uniforms are mandatory" is therefore an important rule for any school in the world. Students should be punished whenever they are late for school severely. The reason is very apparent because being late to school will hamper their learning in school. In addition, they will develop lazy habits and often come late to school giving excuses like they have overslept at home which can pose a risk to their character development and future. If these students cannot even wake up to go to school on time, these students would probably be not interested in learning anything in school and would most probably procrastinate at home. These students would therefore suffer in the future as they have lost their morals in the process which for example is responsibility. If they are not even responsible for their own learning, how can they even go out to work in the society in the future? They would most probably come to work late or do not put in any effort in the work that they would be producing. Therefore "Students who are late should be punished severely" is an important school rule because if students are punished severely, they would not try it again as they fear the consequences and this would correct their thinking as they grow up. There is a phrase that says "Once bitten twice shy". I believe that this applies to students. Respect is a moral that I believe every single person should have. Every problem that occur is usually because of a lack of respect for the other party. As students are still very young, they should be taught how to respect everyone including their peers and especially other higher authorities like their teachers. Respecting each other will provide students an opportunity to understand each other to prevent arguments and conflicts from happening. Once respect is established among students, the school would be a conducive environment for students to study. I believe that students should bow their heads to teachers whenever they are present the first time and greet them politely as this would nurture their character positively like for example manners. An example is Japan which already has this rule imposed on students already. Statistics have shown that Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. I strongly believe that this is attributed to the character development that the Japanese students are exposed to. With respect, there would also be no bullies and fights. Therefore "Respect everyone" is the most important rule a school should be using. "Respect everyone" is the most important school rule to have because if everyone respects one another, everyone would be able to understand each other and there would be no conflicts or disagreements. For example Albert Einstein says that "Peace cannot be kept by force, it can only be kept by understanding" Conflicts and arguments among students would not exist if they understood one another. Respecting each other also helps to nurture other morals like integrity, responsibility and manners. Students can then apply these life skills in the future and be a responsible citizen in their country. If students respect their teachers, they would not be late as they would not be respecting the teachers if they are late and they would also not wear sleazy or offensive clothes to school as this would means that they would not be respecting the school. All in all, rules are meant to be followed. With effective school rules implemented in schools, I believe we would be seeing a change in our future generations. Society will then be a better place for everyone to live in.

The Supreme Court on Friday reduced the power of executive agencies by sweeping aside a longstanding legal precedent, endangering countless regulations and transferring power from the executive branch to Congress and the courts.

The precedent, Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council , one of the most cited in American law, requires courts to defer to agencies’ reasonable interpretations of ambiguous statutes. There have been 70 Supreme Court decisions relying on Chevron, along with 17,000 in the lower courts.

The decision is all but certain to prompt challenges to the actions of an array of federal agencies, including those regulating the environment, health care and consumer safety.

The vote was 6 to 3, dividing along ideological lines.

“Chevron is overruled,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority. “Courts must exercise their independent judgment in deciding whether an agency has acted within its statutory authority.”

In dissent, Justice Elena Kagan said the ruling amounted to a judicial power grab. “A rule of judicial humility,” she wrote, “gives way to a rule of judicial hubris.”

Justice Kagan summarized her dissent from the bench, a rare move and a sign of profound disagreement. “Courts, in particular this court, will now play a commanding role” in setting national policy, she said.

    Rules, always a part of our lives, which have been imposed on us ever since we were born. School rules are no exceptions either, which can defer greatly from one school to another. The amount of defiant students in schools are rising and fights are occurring more frequently and I believe that most of this attributes to the school rules imposed by the school, which are fairly ineffective.
