Essay on Importance of Good Manners

How a person behaves towards the other can be termed ‘manner’. Manners play an important part in everyone’s life. Someone’s manners can tell us so many things about that person, like their background, their education etc. But ‘Manner’ is a general term, that is to say, it does not necessarily mean that manners are always good, though they always should be good, if not cultivated properly they can be bad, which is generally termed as ‘bad – Manners’. And therefore, manners, that is to say, ‘Good Manners’ are cultivated in every child from childhood.

The learning of manners starts from the home since parents are the first teacher of the child, the parents also become the first to teach manners to the child. But one thing to understand here is that the mind of a human is receptive, and hence we, the human, receive or rather learn and grasp so many things that happen in our surroundings. And this surrounding also up to an extent plays a role in the cultivation of manners in the child.

Hence, good surroundings cultivate good manners and vice-versa.

Afterwards, the parents and the surrounding school and teachers play an important part in teaching good manners to the students. For instance, the students must greet the teacher good morning, or good afternoon (according to the time) whenever the teacher enters the classroom, also the use of phrases such as “may I come in” and “may I go” are taught to be used in the school. And these phrases remain with the students for the rest of their life.

Understanding Good Manners

The one thing to understand here is that good manners are not formalities, neither are they social protocol or the rules, which one has to follow to avoid the fine. But it is something that comes from the inside most naturally and by itself, it is something that should not be forced or faked. The way in which we want others to behave with us is also how they want us to behave to them, it can be the simplest way to understand good manners.

People with good manners are liked by everyone, while on the other hand, those who do not possess good manners are more often than not despised by others. It does not matter how wealthy one is, how well educated one is, or how great marks one managed to score, if the person does not possess good manners people are not going to admire him. But if the person knows how to act and behave with others, then everyone likes that person. Also, good manners turn into good nature, and a person who has a good nature is liked by everyone.

Writing an Essay on the Importance of Good Manners

As discussed, good manners are important in life, writing about the same helps it in a better manner. And hence students are required to write an essay on the importance of good manners. Because for writing an essay students have to think about it, and therefore it also in a way allows the students to check their manners.

But one thing is also important which is, essay writing should be good, and hence Vedantu provides the essay on the “importance of good manners” for free to guide the students in writing the same.

From our childhood, good manners have been cultivated as a major part of every being's life. Being a human it plays an important role in every one day to day life. Our parents nurtured us since our childhood with good mannerism, good behavior and discipline. These three features are a vital part of good manners. Manners either its bad or good can't be imposed to the child, some basically inherited from their parents and other social mannerism etiquettes will be taught by parents itself at home first, since a home is the first school of any child to start its learning process where parents both mother and father plays an important role in developing good social etiquette or good manners to enhance the child’s upbringing in a good shape.

Good manners has its own definition. If a person needs to be liked by someone then he or she needs to act like a good person with good behavior or manners. No matter what level of studies you did, either highly qualified or simply 10th passed out doesn’t make a difference if a person knows how to act or behave in front of others.

Respect and courtesy are the major assets in developing good manners. One should be polite and courteous to others, even while communicating we need to be kind, calm and patient enough to listen to others, which means he or she should be a good listener. These qualities even makes life problems more simple and makes the person think more broadly.

Types of Good Manners:

Here are some specific mentioned good manners which helps a person in enhancing

Speak politely to others

Say thank you always wherever needed in conversation.

Open doors for others.

Maintain eye contact while shaking hands.

Stand up while elders enter the room.

Polite phone manners.

Serve people when any guest enters your home.

Highlights of Good Manners

Good manners can differentiate between in two aspects that is one in school and other at-home itself.

These are some major qualities that help children in enhancing good manners in all aspects.

Good Manners vs Discipline

There is a thin line between these two words which makes a big difference, generally, we cannot identify these differences. Good manners is completely associated with a  person's act or behavior such as politeness, patience, good listener, courtesy, helping nature and so on are some of the traits that signify good manners. Whereas Discipline describes a person's own set of rules and standards which he/ she follows throughout their life for example if a person is a smoker but here his discipline says not to smoke in front of parents or any elders this follows as same by any means.

Carry yourself well, stay under control, be polite at all times, and you will develop a good reputation for being well-behaved. Good behavior makes a good impression on teachers and administrators and they'll be inclined to put in a good word for you. A squeaky-clean record and upright demeanor can also improve your college admission prospects and help when you search for jobs.

Behaving in the Classroom

Step 1 Listen attentively to your teacher.

  • Avoid asking your teacher to re-explain things they've just explained in great detail just for fun or to gain their attention or else you may frustrate or anger them. Instead, wait for a moment when you can approach your teacher one-on-one and say something like, "I'm sorry, I think I need a little more help understanding how to do this."
  • If you have any such condition that makes it hard for you to concentrate, remember to take resolve it when you wake up in the morning (such as take a medicine if you are not feeling well) so that you'll pay attention during the lectures and lessons.

Step 2 Follow the teacher's directions.

  • If, for instance, your teacher said not to enter the classroom before they arrive, but your classmates have gone in anyway, you should wait outside. If you're the only person to follow the rules exactly, you'll stand out in your teacher's mind as a good rule-follower.
  • Some teachers like to give vague, cagey advice to see who listens and who doesn't. If they say something mysterious like, "be sure to study this weekend," take note - they might be planning a pop quiz for Monday. You'll make an excellent impression if you are the only one prepared.

Step 3 Strive for good grades.

  • Your willingness to seek help will show your teacher that you're taking their class seriously. A student who's clearly engaged in the material is more likely to be considered favorably when the teacher is assigning partial credit, tests, re-takes, etc.
  • If you're struggling hard to comprehend any subject, don't be afraid to ask your teacher for a tutor recommendation. Seeking help when you need it is a sign of maturity which most teachers will admire and prefer.

Step 4 Participate in the class.

  • Raise your hand when you have something to say in class. Never blurt out answers! Most teachers get irked when students answer without being called on.

Step 5 Be quiet.

  • If the teacher leaves the room, you might get away with talking a little. However, quiet down as soon as they return. Never talk if the teacher leaves during a test - other students might tell about you if you disturb them or try to cheat.

Step 6 Work towards a clean slate.

Behaving Outside of the Classroom

Step 1 Don't waste time in the hallway.

  • If you've got a timer function on your watch or cell phone, use it. Designate a set amount of time - three minutes, for example - that you're allowed to talk with friends. When your timer goes off, wrap up what you're doing and get to class!

Step 2 Stay in the administration's good graces.

  • Here's one example: many schools have a secretary in the school's office who you need to talk to if you arrive at school late for some reason. Sometimes, this person is annoying, and, because they don't have the power to discipline you, it's tempting to give them sass. Don't do it. They probably talk to the principal every day. Even if they don't rat you out to the principal, they'll make life difficult for you the next time you show up with a poorly-forged doctor's note.

Step 3 Avoid fights.

  • Never instigate a fight. No matter how disrespectful someone is to you, you'll bear the brunt of the blame if you throw the first punch. If you're fuming mad at another student, do whatever you need to do to control your temper - listen to some calming music, eat a big meal, or perform some vigorous exercise, for starters.

Step 4 Don't badmouth anyone.

  • It goes without saying, but spreading gossip is also just a mean thing to do. Before you say something mean about someone, reflect on whether the statement is true or just a rumor. If it's true, think about how it would make this person feel if they heard it.

Going the Extra Mile

Step 1 Enroll in extracurricular activities.

  • Musical ensembles or bands
  • Vocal groups
  • Plays or musicals
  • Special interest clubs (debate, cooking, robotics, etc.)

Step 2 Cultivate a

  • Boys should be clean-shaven, with a short, conservative haircut. Tend towards button-up shirts and clean, good-fitting pants or slacks. Don't wear earrings.
  • Girls should avoid ostentatious makeup, revealing clothing (a bare midriff, low-cut shirts, etc.), and excessive jewelry.

Step 3 Reach out to unpopular people.

  • Don't stoop to your haters' level by hurling your own insults back at them. The best revenge is to live happily while continuing to do good - it'll frustrate them to no end.

A child with good manners grows up into a good adult who is well-liked and respected amongst his friends and colleagues. After all, no one likes to hang out or work with people who are rigid and rude or who say offensive things without caring about other people’s feelings.

Good manners are not the things one does in a forced manner. It is not about social protocols or rules that need to be followed. Instead, it is about the kindness and respectful attitude that comes naturally to a person, that the person displays in his day-to-day life while dealing with other people.

Some examples of good manners are saying “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me” and “sorry”, holding doors open for others, helping elders carry their luggage or cross the road, being disciplined and punctual as well as treating everyone with respect irrespective of their social status. When we are respectful and kind towards others, other people also respect us and treat us kindly. This creates a joyful atmosphere and makes everyone happy.

Good manners take a person far in life. We must always try to cultivate good manners and let go of our bad habits and manners.

500+ Words Importance of Good Manners Essay

Good manners create respect, loyalty and gratitude in society. It attributes to a good social structure. Being well-mannered means acknowledging people each time we meet them. Good manners are a sure key to success. They help in making friends, winning over people and obtaining appreciation and admiration. Following the rules of the road, respecting the queues, helping the weak and old people, and saying ‘thank you’, ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘excuse me’ are a few examples of exhibiting good manners. When we give someone else our seat on a crowded bus, when we hold the door open for another person to walk through, when we wait for our turn, when we walk on the right-hand side of the mall or sidewalk, when we knock before opening the closed door of a room – all of these are also examples of good manners.

Good Manners at School

Childhood is the best period for learning and imbibing good manners. It is in the early formative years that good conduct, behaviour and manners are nurtured and developed. Good manners are learnt early in life. A child born in a cultured family will learn to be respectful to others because he will see his elders behaving gently.

In school, while interacting with teachers, children should listen attentively, raise their hands before speaking during lessons, make eye contact, and be polite when talking. Kids should also treat their peers well by listening when they speak and respecting their personal space. Respecting the classroom is another way to practise good manners. Even when children are playing outside, they can still keep manners in mind. Encourage children to invite another child, who is playing alone, to join the group game or activity.

Social Implications of Good Manners

Good manners are very necessary for progress in life. They help a person to win the favour and confidence of others. They are a sure passport to success in life. An ill-mannered person, on the other hand, is disliked by everyone and has no chance of success in any walk of life. They may be wealthy, great warriors, or intellectuals, but without manners, they can hardly win the respect of others. Good manners endear people to each other. Practising good manners on a daily basis makes life more pleasant.

The norms of human behaviour change in our fast-changing social life, but the status of ‘good manners’ remains constant. Good manners are closely linked to moral values. Basic manners are good to use everywhere, and that care and attention to manners should start at home, among all family members.

Online Behavior of Students Essay

Online behavior of students is an interesting topic for discussion because it still has not been researched well enough. The Internet allows students to express their opinions in various, previously unavailable ways. Online interactions may lead to new relationships and sometimes have a positive influence on the education process.

However, there are some complications. Universities feel responsible for the comments of their students because their reputation is at stake. Extremely offensive online posts may damage the future career of a student, so there should be measures to protect the students from making crucial mistakes. Universities should punish students for their questionable online behavior dependant on the situation, and conditions should be researched.

The issue is that students should be able to voice their opinion because of the freedom of speech. The problem is that sometimes these views are extremely controversial, and universities do not want to be associated with such comments. The problem is that the Internet and social media allow such points of view to be seen by millions of people. It is a relatively new form of social interaction, which still has not been adequately studied.

This way of communication slightly differs because of various factors (Arendholz 5). Online behavior of a person is dramatically different and “sometimes the character portrayed online bears little resemblance to a student’s true character” (Flanigan par. 17). This means that the Internet allows students to act the way they would not be allowed to in public. However, it must be understood that most of the time people behave on social media in the same way that they would among their peers.

Online communication is used by students to form relationships (Zheng, Burrow-Sanchez and Drew 3). It should not be disregarded that people are extremely prone to the influence of their peers at this age. Students that suffer from chronic depression are more likely to post inappropriate comments or make offensive videos.

The problem is that people may change their behavior, and it is more similar to their behavior online (Amichai-Hamburger 93). This means that if one sees a positive response from peers about their online behavior, the person may start to act the same way in public so. Furthermore, students should be disciplined to prevent harmful consequences.

There is always a possibility that they would post inappropriate comments or videos.

In my opinion, officials should warn parents about dangers of the social media to protect students from the information that could harm them and their psyches. However, access to the Internet should not be entirely limited. When it comes to education, the information is better perceived by students when it is delivered on the Internet.

The attention span of students is reduced because they are used to social media and fast access to information (Paul, Baker and Cochran 2118). Use of devices should be strictly prohibited during classes. The Internet helps students to develop their social identity (Jenkins 29). It is important for one to have an understanding of his social identity to function as an individual.

The Internet can be used at any place at any time, so students may not think about the consequences of their actions. There are programs that help with monitoring online activities of students on university computers. However, universities should let the students express themselves on the Internet because it is necessary for every individual.

In conclusion, the Internet is a great platform for communication between students because it has changed the way people perceive information. However, there are some complications because it affects the education process. Inappropriate online comments posted by a student may damage the reputation of a university.

Students should be punished for their inappropriate online behavior only in the most severe cases. However, such factors as the mental state of a student and problems in the family should be researched. Overall, universities should look for the root of the problem and not just blame students for their missteps.
