On 5 th June 2019, our school celebrated the environment day. I was the head of the environment club of the school and I got several responsibilities, such as preparation of the to-do schedule and to guide all other students of the club to perform accordingly.

So to make the things fluent and easy for me I asked one of my friends who was also in the club to assist me. She helped me with what we can plan to do in the program.

Then accordingly we made the schedule. We have divided to make one Chorus to sing certain songs in the environment and we will assign a group to do certain dance performances and I and my friend will be the anchor in the event.

Then we decided that we will take everyone to the main ground and will ask everyone to plant at least three plants on the sides of the ground. 

Then we submitted the list to the respected teacher and then they approved our schedule after making certain changes in the schedule. Then the preparation started for the event students started to prepare for the dance and song teachers started to do their preparation by calling the chief guest, principal and arranging for the seeds and saplings to be planted.

Then on the fifth of June, everything was set and the students were in proper school uniforms and well dressed. Then the event started. We were the hosts of the event and we started initializing the day we called the guests and inaugurated the program then the events were performed simultaneously after one by one.

Then everyone revived the samosas to eat and juice to drink. The principal and the guest told us about the importance of environmental safety. Then everyone planted a sapling and the event was successfully over.

Let’s Spread the Greens

On 5 th June 2019, our school has decided to organise the environment programme. It was a very successful program. On this day every year, the entire world celebrates the environment safety event.

Our school environment club has decided to organise a big event in this regard. Therefore the club in charges was assigned to bring out all the necessary details about the event that has to be performed and executed. The leader of the club was assigned to give a speech on the world environment day.

And all the other member students of the club were assigned to do dancing and singing activities. The students started preparing for the event, they started making posters, quotations started decorating the stage and the other places of the campus the main thing that they mentioned in their preparation as they didn’t use and materials which can harm the environment they have used all the environment-friendly products in the decoration so the environment can be saved. 

On the day of the event, all the students came early in the morning and started preparing for the day. Then they gave a warm welcome to the guests and to all the other students and teachers. Then the event started and different forms of dance and songs were performed.

They have practised for those events for a month. Then the chief guest Dr. Manisha Uppal from WHO gave the speech and the motive and topic were “lets spread the green”. That motivated the students for spreading green and saving the environment.

Then everyone took the pledge to keep the environment safe and not to cut the trees and stop others from destroying the environment. Then the chief guest proceeded to plant the saplings and seeds, in the ground and motivated the students to love the environment.

World Environment Day – A day to celebrate tireless commitment to our planet and to remember the tremendous positive impact we can have as a community – as long as we stick together – for the one Earth we have, its inhabitants and our children’s future.

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has been held annually since 1974. The goal of the day of action is to promote environmental awareness and draw attention to crucial concerns around our planet’s survival, that require active engagement and commitment. Today, the day represents one of the largest global platforms for environmental action, with millions of participants from around the world. Each World Environment Day focuses on a specific issue that reflects urgent problems and challenges of our time, such as climate change, biodiversity loss or pollution.

In 1972 the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm. One of the results of this conference was the inception of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP’s aim is to promote partnerships in environmental protection, provide information and create awareness on urgent planetary issues. The slogan of the first UN conference was “Only One Earth,” which is just as true 50 years later, as it was then. 

This year’s theme is “Our Land, Our Future” and focuses on land restoration, stopping desertification and building drought resilience. The 2024 celebrations will take place in Saudi Arabia.

Big challenges require big commitments

But what are the big challenges we face and where do they come from?

As human beings, our never-ending production and consumption structure, especially in industrialized nations, is causing planetary boundaries to be increasingly exceeded. Planetary boundaries refer to the processes that are responsible for the stability of the Earth’s natural ecosystems. The overloading of this ecological resilience has significant impact on people and their livelihoods – as we can already see today. 

Climate change, loss of biodiversity or pollution are just three of many consequences that can be observed. But let’s dive deeper into the background and take a look at what needs to be done.

Climate change

In 2015 the Paris Agreement , a legally binding international treaty on climate change, was adopted by 196 countries – a historical breakthrough. According to that contract, global warming should be limited in this century to below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C, in comparison to pre-industrial levels. Without significant efforts to achieve this goal, the climate crisis will have devastating consequences in the years to come, such as extreme weather events or intensified famine. 

Therefore, we need to halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This issue requires international cooperation and coordination but also the commitment of each individual . Here are a few tips on how you can reduce your own carbon footprint:

1. Use public transport or carpooling services, ride your bike or go on foot 2. Try to consume local and seasonal products  3. Reduce your consumption of meat 4. Ask yourself with every purchase if you really need it 5. Switch off lights and electronic devices when they aren’t in use

Biodiversity loss 

The loss of biodiversity refers to the decline or disappearance of the biological variety of all living species that inhabit our planet. This diversity has declined at an alarming rate in recent years, which can be attributed primarily to human activities. Some of the main causes are climate change, pollution, devastation of habitat or the invasion of alien species that displace indigenous ones. 

Yet, in many ways, healthy ecosystems reflect the basis for our survival on Earth and allow us to thrive. They provide clean air, fresh water and rich soils. But what can you do to protect and restore these sensitive systems?

In terms of health, air pollution is the most significant environmental threat of our time. It accounts for approximately 7 million premature deaths every year. Billions of people are exposed to particulate matter. Particulate matter is defined as airborne particles that do not immediately sink to the ground but remain in the atmosphere for a certain time. They can cause health problems if they are inhaled over a long period of time. Main emitters of fine particles are, for example: burning of fossil fuels, waste burning and agriculture.  In Africa and West Asia, windblown dust is a significant source of particles. 

Not only air pollution, but marine pollution is also a growing threat. As we celebrate World Environment Day on June 5 th , it is an opportune moment to reflect on the impact our individual actions can have on the planet we call home. The theme for this year's observance, "Solutions to Plastic Pollution," serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need to address the mounting plastic waste crisis that threatens the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

The Indian Context

Plastic Waste Generation:

• According to a recent study by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) , India generated around 3.5 million metric tons of plastic waste in 2019-20, with a per capita generation rate of 3.5 kg per year.
• The study also revealed that only about 60% of the plastic waste generated in India is processed or recycled, while the remaining ends up in landfills or the environment.

Plastic Waste Management Rules and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):

• The Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2022 , further strengthened the implementation of EPR for plastic packaging waste.
• Under the new rules, producers, importers, and brand owners are mandated to collect and manage a specific percentage of plastic waste generated from their products.
• The targets for EPR implementation have been set at 70% for rigid plastic packaging and 50% for flexible plastic packaging by 2024.

Initiatives by the Indian Government:

• In addition to the Plastic Waste Management Rules, the Indian government has launched the " Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" (Clean India Mission) in 2014, which aims to achieve a clean and litter-free India by promoting waste management practices and public participation.
• The government has also announced the phase-out of single-use plastics by 2022, starting with the banning of specific items like plastic straws, cutlery, and bags.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

• India has implemented a nationwide ban on single-use plastics, including plastic bags, cups, plates, and straws, to reduce plastic waste.
• Initiatives like " Plastic Lao, Muft Jaao" in Delhi encourage people to exchange plastic waste for free metro rides, promoting recycling.
• Startups like Green Delight and Bamboo India are promoting the use of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics, such as bamboo products.

Mindful Consumption:

• Indian brands like Fabindia, Anokhi, and Okhai promote sustainable fashion by using eco-friendly materials and supporting traditional artisans.
• Companies like Saaze and Bamboo India offer eco-friendly packaging solutions made from bamboo and other sustainable materials.
• The Indian government has introduced initiatives like the Eco-Mark and GreenPro certification to encourage sustainable manufacturing practices.

In 2023, Government of India has launched Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for renewable energy. Global Initiatives

• United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The SDGs, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provide a comprehensive blueprint for addressing global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable consumption and production patterns. Goals such as SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) are directly related to environmental sustainability.
• Paris Agreement: The Paris Agreement, signed by 196 parties, is a legally binding international treaty on climate change. It aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Countries are required to submit Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) outlining their planned efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The agreement also includes provisions for financial support, technology transfer, and capacity-building to assist developing countries in their transition to a low-carbon economy.
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): The CBD, ratified by 196 countries, is an international legal instrument for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. The convention has established targets, such as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets , which aim to address the underlying causes of biodiversity loss and promote sustainable use and conservation efforts.
• United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP): UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP initiatives, such as the Global Environment Outlook , provide valuable scientific assessments and policy recommendations for decision-makers worldwide.
• Global Climate Finance Initiatives: International organisations, such as the Green Climate Fund and the Global Environment Facility, provide financial resources to assist developing countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. To encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment, every year the 5th of June is celebrated as World Environment Day. This day was first celebrated in 1973 and since then, it has been a platform for raising awareness against climate change and other environmental issues like marine pollution, unexpected growth in human population, global warming, wildlife crimes, and sustainable consumption. Over 150 countries use this platform to raise concerns and take steps for environmental protection. Every year, this platform decides a theme or forum for government and non-governmental organizations and businesses to advocate environmental issues. World Environment Day is a global platform that encourages positive change in the environment.

Every year, one of the countries takes the responsibility to host the World Environment Day. This year, the responsibility is taken up by Sweden. The day will serve as an opportunity to showcase some of Sweden’s work in the area of environmental protection. It will cover stories and short videos on the work done by Sweden over the past 50 years towards environmental concerns.

How can students help in solving environmental concerns?

Global warming, air and water pollution, deforestation, ozone layer depletion, and many more are the major environmental concerns. However, these issues may get resolved if we start taking more eco-conscious steps. On this World Environment Day, students can take a pledge to work collaboratively towards reducing environmental concerns. Some of the steps that can be taken by them are:

• Using reusable items. For example, instead of plastic bottles and straws, glass bottles and steel straws can be used.
• Minimizing the use of paper. Moreover, the focus should be on using recycled paper.
• Conserving water and electricity by switching off the fan and turning off water taps when not in need.
• Supporting environmentally friendly practices.
• Reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.

Taking one step at a time can bring a positive impact on the environment.

World Environment Day is a platform that encourages people to take action to protect the environment and resolve the existing environmental problems. To make students realize the importance of this day, teachers can take the help of the following fun activities .

Connect with nature

The best way to celebrate World Environment Day is by connecting with nature. Teachers can take kids to a nearby park or zoo and help them explore the beauty of nature. It allows them to explore the untouched parts of nature, and they look at the changes closely. Moreover, children can take pictures of nature. Teachers can also ask questions to students about different animal and plant species.

Scavenger hunt

Students can learn a lot about nature by walking around a park or other open spaces. Moreover, they can record nature without disturbing it. Some of the activities that they can perform are:

• Drawing pictures of flowers and plants
• Spotting birds
• Collecting litter and throwing them into the dustbin

Students can build a bird feeder from cardboard to attract birds. It is a simple activity that does not require many resources. Students can use string, scissors, bird seeds, bamboo skewer, and cardboard tubes to make a bird feeder.

Learn how to compost

Every household produces a lot of bio waste, and students can use this bio waste to learn composting. This organic material can be added to plants to support their growth. Students can collect fruits and vegetable peels, eggshells, tea bags, newspapers, and other bio waste to make compost. To perform this activity, students require soil, a compost bin with a lid, and plant and kitchen waste. One thing that they should remember is to turn over the compost with a shovel as it decomposes.

Learn recycling techniques

Make students eager to learn the ways to solve the environmental crisis . Teachers can help students understand how they can sort different recyclables. Show them the techniques to separate plastics, metals, cardboard, and glass. They can use different bins to collect the segregated waste.

Twins' Royce Lewis to begin rehab assignment with St. Paul on Tuesday

Twins star third baseman Royce Lewis will begin a rehab assignment with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. If he avoids any setbacks, his return to Minnesota's lineup isn't far away.

Lewis has been out since suffering an oblique strain on July 2. Between a right quad strain on opening day and this oblique injury, he's played in just 24 of the Twins' 98 games this season. During those 24 games, he posted a ridiculous 185 OPS+ with 10 home runs, 18 runs, and 18 RBI.

When he's in the lineup, Lewis is a difference-maker. The 25-year-old former No. 1 overall pick has 31 home runs in 100 career major league games, including last year's postseason; he just hasn't been able to stay healthy for an extended period of time at any point in his major league career. Lewis suffered a torn ACL in February 2021 and another in May 2022. Last season, he missed time due to oblique and hamstring injuries after returning from the second ACL recovery, but got healthy in time for the playoffs and mashed four homers in six postseason games.

Earlier this year, Lewis played in six games for the Saints on his rehab assignment from the quad injury that cost him 58 major league games. He may not need that many this time around, though it'll presumably be at least three or so. The Saints are beginning a six-game homestand against Omaha on Tuesday. The Twins start a three-game series against the Phillies at Target Field on Monday, then have an off day Thursday before traveling to Detroit for a weekend road series.

Minnesota also hopes to get Carlos Correa (foot) and Jose Miranda (back) off of the injured list sooner rather than later.

Last Sunday was Earth’s hottest day in all recorded history, European climate agency says

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Sunday, the Earth sizzled to the hottest day ever measured by humans, yet another heat record shattered in the past couple of years, according to the European climate service Copernicus Tuesday.

Copernicus’ preliminary data shows that the global average temperature Sunday was 17.09 degrees Celsius (62.76 degrees Fahrenheit), beating the record set just last year on July 6, 2023 by .01 degrees Celsius (.02 degrees Fahrenheit). Both Sunday’s mark and last year’s record obliterate the previous record of 16.8 degrees Celsius (62.24 degrees Fahrenheit), which itself was only a few years old, set in 2016.

Without human-caused climate change , records would be broken nowhere near as frequently, and new cold records would be set as often as hot ones.

“What is truly staggering is how large the difference is between the temperature of the last 13 months and the previous temperature records,” Copernius Director Carlo Buontempo said in a statement. “We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years.”

While 2024 has been extremely warm, what kicked Sunday into new territory was a way toastier than usual Antarctic winter, according to Copernicus. The same thing was happening on the southern continent last year when the record was set in early July.

But it wasn’t just a warmer Antarctica on Sunday. Interior California baked with triple digit heat Fahrenheit , complicating more than two dozen fires in the U.S. West. At the same time, Europe sweltered through its own deadly heat wave.

“It’s certainly a worrying sign coming on the heels of 13 straight record -setting months,” said Berkeley Earth climate scientist Zeke Hausfather, who now estimates there’s a 92% chance that 2024 will beat 2023 as the warmest year on record.

July is generally the hottest month of the year globally, mostly because there is more land in the Northern hemisphere, so seasonal patterns there drive global temperatures.

Copernicus records go back to 1940, but other global measurements by the United States and United Kingdom governments go back even further, to 1880. Many scientists, taking those into consideration along with tree rings and ice cores, say last year’s record highs were the hottest the planet has been in about 120,000 years . Now the first six months of 2024 have broken even those.

Scientists blame the supercharged heat mostly on climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas and on livestock agriculture. Other factors include a natural El Nino warming of the central Pacific Ocean, which has since ended. Reduced marine fuel pollution and possibly an undersea volcanic eruption are also causing some additional warmth, but those aren’t as important as greenhouse gases trapping heat, they said.

Because El Nino is likely to be soon replaced by a cooling La Nina, Hausfather said he would be surprised if 2024 sees any more monthly records, but the hot start of the year is still probably enough to make it warmer than last year.

Sure Sunday’s mark is notable but “what really kind of makes your eyeballs jump out” is how the last few years have been so much hotter than previous marks, said Northern Illinois University climate scientist Victor Gensini, who wasn’t part of the Copernicus team. “It’s certainly a fingerprint of climate change.”

University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann said the difference between the this year’s and last year’s high mark is so tiny and so preliminary that he is surprised the European climate agency is promoting it.

“We should really never be comparing absolute temperatures for individual days,” Mann said in an email.

Yes, it’s a small difference, Gensini said in an interview, but there have been more than 30,500 days since Copernicus data started in 1940, and this is the hottest of all of them.

“What matters is this,” said Texas A&M University climate scientist Andrew Dessler. “The warming will continue as long as we’re dumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and we have the technology to largely stop doing that today. What we lack is political will.”

The average global temperature reached 17.09 degrees Celsius, or about 62.76 Fahrenheit, which is just above the record of 17.08 C set on July 6, 2023.

“We are now in truly uncharted territory and as the climate keeps warming, we are bound to see new records being broken in future months and years,” Carlo Buontempo, the director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement.

So far, July of this year and July 2023 were both much hotter than the average from 1991 to 2020, according to Copernicus data. Before last year, the hottest day ever recorded was Aug. 12, 2016, when the average temperature reached 16.8 degrees.

Last week, heat waves across southern and central Europe brought wildfires to southern Italy and forced Greece’s Culture Ministry to close the Acropolis for several hours, according to The Associated Press . 

In the U.S., excessive heat warnings were in effect for six states Tuesday, including Arizona, California and Montana. Officials suspect that more than 300 deaths in Maricopa County , Arizona, have been connected to heat-related illness already this year. 

Last month was the hottest June on record globally and the 13th month in a row that broke records for high temperatures, according to the Copernicus service’s monitoring .

“We’re going to have to have massive readjustments in the way in which we live our lives” as heat intensifies, said Bharat Venkat, the director of the UCLA Heat Lab, which studies the effects of rising temperatures.

As a small personal example, Venkat said he took his dog for a walk in the local mall this summer because the pavement “was so hot that I was worried she was going to burn her paws.”

He emphasized that on a larger and more serious level, “a lot of these negative impacts overlay pre-existing social inequalities.” 

People with underlying health conditions are more likely to be harmed by heat-related illness. Those who work outdoors, such as delivery workers and farmers, face greater challenges. Certain types of structures, like prisons and food trucks, retain more heat, making it especially hot for the people inside.

Global average temperatures usually peak from late June to early August, because that is generally the hottest time of year in the Northern Hemisphere, which has most of the world’s land and population.

In the Southern Hemisphere, melting sea ice in Antarctica has led to higher average temperatures, as well, the Copernicus service reported. 

This year was also especially warm because of the El Niño climate pattern, said Bob Henson, a meteorologist and climate writer for Yale Climate Connections.

La Niña, which is predicted to arrive in the coming months, should have a moderate cooling effect.

But overall, Henson said, temperatures will keep rising, and records will continue to be broken.

Welcome to Boiling Point. I’m Melody Petersen, a reporter on The Times’ climate team, writing the newsletter this week to fill in for my colleague Sammy Roth.

California’s Death Valley is famous for being the “ hottest place on Earth .” Even without this month’s heat waves, temperatures in July in the national park frequently top 120 .

Tourists seldom spend more than 24 hours here in the summer, but park rangers, tourism staff and Native Americans live in the park full-time, and conditions can easily kill those who are careless.

My colleague Noah Haggerty recently traveled to Death Valley and talked to residents about how they deal every day with extreme heat in the summer.

One park ranger measured her tap water at 105 degrees because the underground pipes were so hot. In order to avoid being scalded while showering, rangers sometimes turn off their hot water heaters, which gives the water a chance to cool down to a more reasonable 80 degrees.

“My first summer here, it was a learning experience,” said Jennette Jurado, who works as a park spokesperson and supervisory ranger. “I started to learn to tentatively touch a metal surface before just grabbing a doorknob to open it.”

Stephen Peterson works in the general store in the small tourist town of Stovepipe Wells. He moved to Death Valley in the spring because the concession company that manages Stovepipe Wells for the federal government offered a sweet deal: cheap on-site housing, subsidized food and modest pay.

The heat, he says, can feel like a blow dryer in your face. And sweat evaporates so fast that the skin doesn’t seem to get wet.

Not far from Stovepipe Wells, tucked away on 300 acres within the park, members of the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe live through it all, as visitors come and go.

“This is our homeland — we’ve lived here all our lives,” said Cathy Cottonwood, a maintenance worker from the tribe. “We just hunker down, try to stay cool, do things in the morning and evening, just deal with it.”

Mandi Campbell, the tribal historic preservation officer, hopes people understand that the area has more to offer than the hottest temperatures on Earth. “That isn’t all that Death Valley is about,” she said. “You just have to come out and see it.”

Another bout of prolonged heat has kicked off across California and much of the West, with expectations that it will again bring several days of triple-digit temperatures to most inland areas, writes Grace Toohey.

July’s second major heat wave isn’t forecast to be as extreme as the first one, but officials are bracing for an increased threat of wildfire.

A pair of fast-burning fires ignited Sunday in Riverside County , rapidly scorching more than 2,000 acres of brush, causing evacuations and burning multiple structures.

South of downtown Riverside, the Hawarden fire had burned about 500 acres by late afternoon Sunday. Video from the scene showed several homes burned and residents fleeing the area.

“It’s a scary day here in Riverside,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said on Sunday. “It’s going to be a very long night.”

Arson investigators were probing reports that the fire was caused by children setting off fireworks .

Meanwhile, about 175 firefighters were battling the Eagle fire, which erupted about 2:15 p.m. Sunday at Cajalco and Eagle Canyon roads, east of Corona. The fire burned out of control for several hours, blackening about 500 acres. The blaze continued to grow Monday morning, with more than 1,600 acres burned.

And in new research related to wildfires, a study found that millions of people are living in close proximity to oil and gas wells that are in the potential path of flames, writes Hayley Smith.

More than 100,000 wells in 19 states west of the Mississippi River are in areas that have burned in recent decades and face a high risk of burning in the future, with the vast majority in California, according to a study published in the journal One Earth .

Nearly 3 million Americans live within 3,200 feet of those wells, putting them at heightened risk of explosions, air and water pollution, infrastructure damage and other hazards.

CHEMICALS IN TAP WATER

California’s drinking water comes from more than 2,900 different community water systems, according to the Environmental Working Group’s Tap Water Database .

And the water delivered by each of those systems can have surprisingly different trace levels of arsenic and other harmful chemicals. That’s because each draws from different water sources.

In 2023, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power — which serves about 4 million people — sourced its tap water from the L.A. Aqueduct, the California Aqueduct and the Colorado River Aqueduct as well as from local groundwater, according to its most recent drinking water quality report .

Staff writer Deborah Vankin detailed how readers can use their ZIP Code to look up what chemicals are in their home’s tap water and then buy the right filter to help remove them.

Water agencies say the levels of chemicals in our drinking water are too low to be harmful. Yet officials are continuing to find ways to improve water quality.

For example, Hayley Smith writes about how state regulators, scientists and tech companies are trying to keep agricultural weed killers and pesticides out of our water supplies and the rest of the environment.

Last year, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation released a road map for sustainable pest management that aims to transition the state away from harmful chemicals and toward safer, organic alternatives by 2050.

On a recent summer morning, nearly 200 farmers, academics and engineers gathered to witness the future of automated agriculture.

Thirteen hulking machines with names like “Weed Spider” and “Mantis” crawled through rows of romaine. One used artificial intelligence cameras to scan the crops and spray them with herbicides. Another zapped weeds with lasers. Yet another deployed robotic arms to cultivate and pick through the foliage.

And in some good news about water, which is always in short supply in California, residents are using about 8 fewer gallons of water per day than they did during the last drought emergency.

For the 12 months that ended April 30, urban water users consumed an average of 77 gallons per person per day. That is a 9% decrease since the drought emergency ended March 2023, according to an analysis by Sean Greene , assistant editor for data and graphics.

THE ENERGY TRANSITION

Sales of electric vehicles are a key statistic in determining whether California can meet its goal of banning new gas-powered cars by 2035. And recent numbers will disappoint those who have been pushing for that transition, writes my colleague Russ Mitchell .

After years of rapid expansion, electric vehicle sales growth in California trended down in the middle of last year and now has turned negative. In this year’s second quarter, 101,443 all-electric cars were registered in the state, down from 102,730 in the second quarter of 2023, a drop of 1.2%.

As recently as last summer, that growth rate was positive at 55%. It fell to 16% growth in the fourth quarter last year, 2% in the first quarter this year, and now has gone negative.

Tesla, once the darling of California car buyers, was hit hard. It’s still by far the EV sales leader, but Tesla’s California sales plunged 24.1% in the second quarter. Nationally, according to Kelley Blue Book, Tesla sales dropped 6.3% for the second quarter, even as total EV sales climbed 7.3%.

“Tesla’s allure seems to be wearing off, signaling potential trouble for the direct-to-consumer manufacturer,” the car dealers group said in a news release.

ONE MORE THING

The annual celestial spectacle of the Perseid meteor shower is now on and will reach its peak in mid-August.

The Perseids are caused by Earth passing through debris left by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which completes its orbit around the sun every 133 years.

From mid-July to early September, the Earth’s orbital path crosses that of the comet. And those grain-sized debris become “falling stars” as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed, burning up and producing spectacular streaks of light.

The term “neurodiversity” acknowledges that neurological differences among people are natural variations in the human brain. Individuals experience and interact with the world in many different ways, and there is no single "right" way of thinking, learning or behaving.

While often associated with autism spectrum disorder, neurodiversity also encompasses other neurological or developmental conditions, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

According to reports, between 10% and 20% of the world’s population is neurodivergent.

Although the Americans with Disabilities Act, a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities, protects neurodivergent workers and safeguards equal employment opportunity, the United States is experiencing high unemployment (between 30% to 40%) among neurodiverse adults, according to data cited by employee experience platform CultureAmp.

Several factors may contribute to the high employment rate, including a lack of reasonable workplace accommodations, misconceptions and stigmas about neurodiversity and a lack of awareness among employers about the strengths and talents of neurodivergent professionals.

Research shows that workplace culture is falling short in fostering an inclusive atmosphere for neurodivergent employees.

More than half of neurodivergent workers perceive a lack of support from both their broader organization (52%) and immediate team (54%) to address neurodiversity topics, according to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a human resources and learning and development group, and neuro-inclusion training provider Uptimize.

Additionally, the report revealed that one in five neurodivergent professionals have experienced harassment or discrimination in a work setting because of their neurodivergence.

Moreover, nearly a third of neurodivergent employees opt not to disclose their neurodivergence to management or HR personnel. Their hesitation is rooted in concerns about facing stereotypical judgments (37%) and skepticism regarding their organization's empathy or ability to offer appropriate accommodations (18%). Twenty-nine percent are worried about the potential negative impact on their career.

As a result of the aforementioned, approximately 33% of participants stated that their work environment had detrimental effects on their mental health and wellbeing.

The stigma surrounding neurodivergence can create an environment where neurodivergent employees feel they cannot be their authentic selves, leading to stress and burnout from "masking" when they are in an office setting.

Masking is a coping mechanism that some neurodivergent people may use to conceal or suppress their traits, in order to appear “neurotypical”—someone whose cognitive processes, sensory experiences and behaviors fall within the range deemed typical by the majority.

Cultivating A Neuro-Inclusive And Supportive Environment

The absence of awareness and understanding regarding neurodiversity has resulted in a lack of consideration in the design of organizational processes, management styles and work environments. This oversight can lead to neurodivergent individuals feeling marginalized by workplace cultures, systems and technologies that fail to acknowledge their cognitive differences.

Employers must work toward establishing a culture that is open and supportive, enabling individuals to feel comfortable discussing neurodiversity. Raising awareness among staff about neurodiversity and the necessity of a neuro-inclusive workplace can contribute to greater understanding.

To effectively recruit and retain neurodiverse talent, it is crucial to collaborate with neurotypical colleagues to identify and address the unconscious biases and microaggressions that neurodivergent individuals often face. Hiring teams should be particularly aware of any biases they may hold against neurodiverse candidates during the interview process and implement measures to ensure fair and inclusive hiring practices.

Although reasonable accommodations are required by law, some employers fail to provide the adjustments needed to meet neurodivergent workers’ needs.

Managers should seek input from individual employees regarding their specific needs to excel in their roles and ensure that reasonable accommodations are easily accessible. Workplace adjustments may consist of providing headphones or establishing quiet areas within the workspace.

Neurodivergent employees may feel the pressure to adhere to social expectations in a traditional office setting. The lack of accommodations tailored to their needs can further compel them to mask, which can be emotionally draining and detrimental to overall well-being.

Remote work allows neurodivergent individuals to create a workspace that suits their sensory needs, reducing distractions and sensory overload often encountered in a physical office setting.

Lastly, flexible scheduling enables neurodivergent employees to work during their most productive hours, accommodating unique cognitive patterns and energy levels.
