Can Entrepreneurs and Governments Team Up to Solve Big Problems?

In 2017, Shield AI’s quadcopter, with no pilot and no flight plan, could clear a building and outpace human warfighters by almost five minutes. It was evidence that autonomous robots could help protect civilian and service member lives. But was it also evidence that Shield AI—a startup barely two years past founding—could ask their newest potential customer, the US government, for a large contract for a system of coordinated, exploring robots? Or would it scare them away? Harvard Business School professor Mitch Weiss and Brandon Tseng, Shield AI’s CGO and co-founder, discuss these and other challenges entrepreneurs face when working with the public sector, and how investing in new ideas can enable entrepreneurs and governments to join forces and solve big problems in the case, “Shield AI.” Open for comment; 0 Comments.

We analyze total United States advertising spending from 1960 to 2018. Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2021

Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

  • Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
  • Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
  • The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
  • Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
  • A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
  • Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
  • The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

All of this year’s Top 40 cases are available for purchase from the Yale Management Media store .

Macroeconomics: Key Topics

economic case study topics

Managing Director, Sim Institute

Tim Rogmans is Managing Director at Sim Institute. He is the author of Sustainability Managment Simulation: Net Zero , Business Essentials Simulation: Coffee Shop Inc. , and Macroeconomics Simulation: Econland .

This module covers the fundamental topics of a macroeconomics course. Students will learn about critical economic concepts and how they interact with each other.

6 Topics in This Module

Measuring a nation's output: gdp.

A nation’s output, as measured by its gross domestic product (GDP), is the start of most macroeconomics courses. This topic looks at GDP—how it is calculated, its individual components (consumption, government expenditure, Investment, and net exports), and the determinants of GDP. There are various challenges when calculating GDP, some of which are addressed by considering real GDP or GDP at purchasing power parity. Although GDP is a useful measure of a nation’s output, it has several shortcomings and can’t be used as the sole measure of economic health.

GDP Explained

Assignments

Describe the main limitations of using GDP to measure an economy. How can these limitations be addressed?

Money, Prices, and Inflation

This topic introduces money as a means of exchange and facilitating trade. Money affects important macroeconomic variables, such as interest rates, exchange rates, and the aggregate price level (inflation). Several macroeconomic variables (GDP, exchange rates, or interest rates) can be considered in real terms rather than nominal terms (i.e., after adjusting for inflation).

A country’s central bank and its banking system determine the supply of money. Governments can apply monetary and fiscal policy tools to avoid or minimize economic recessions.

Inflation Explained

Using information from one or both case studies in this topic, what are the main costs of high inflation for companies? How can companies deal with the challenges posed by high inflation?

Production and Growth

Over the last few decades, the economies of many emerging markets have been catching up with developed countries. Identifying high growth economies is a challenge for international investors and can depend on nontraditional economic indicators and an assessment of government institutions.

Solow’s growth model is used to explain long-term economic growth. In this model, a country’s output or productive capacity depends on the amount of physical capital, the size of the labor force, and productivity. A combination of capital accumulation, population growth, and increasing productivity help to explain why emerging markets can grow more quickly than developed markets. However, effective government institutions are critical in facilitating economic development.

What indicators would you use to assess the economic growth potential of a country? Compare two countries of choice based on the indicators that you identified.

Apply Solow’s model to explain the economic growth and development of a country. You can use data from one of the case studies or publicly available data.

What are the main factors inhibiting South Africa’s economic development?

Unemployment

Unemployment is a key topic for economists, and maintaining low levels of unemployment has become part of the mandate of central banks of the world’s major economies. The causes of unemployment, as well as the appropriate measures to reduce it, are hotly debated among economists.

Simulation

Unemployment Explained

For a country of your choice, analyze the level and causes of unemployment. What would be appropriate policies to reduce the unemployment rate or maintain it at an acceptable level?

When you played Econland , which policies did you implement and why?

During the simulation, did your policy decisions lead to the results you expected in all areas? If not, can you determine why you obtained the results that you did?

How did expectations and the economic situations in other countries depicted in the simulation impact your country’s economy and your policy decisions?

Open Economies

International trade can be explained through the theory of comparative advantage: countries specialize in the production of goods and services in which they hold a relative advantage. Although this theory is quite good at explaining trade between countries with very different factor endowments, it does not explain inter-sectoral trade between similar countries (for example, cars being traded in both directions between France and Germany). The “new trade theory” relaxes some of the assumptions of the theory of comparative advantage and describes trade between markets with imperfect competition and differentiated products.

Dealing with fluctuating and unpredictable exchange—which are determined by relative levels of inflation, interest rates, and the volume of international trade between countries—is an ongoing challenge for companies.

Identify and describe an export of goods or services between two countries. Discuss to what extent the theory of comparative advantage helps to explain the existence of the trade flow.

Fiscal and Monetary Policy

Governments impact an economy in a range of ways, most importantly through their ability to tax and spend (fiscal policy) and the central bank’s ability to control the money supply (monetary policy). Common macroeconomic goals that governments aim to achieve through their policies include economic growth, low unemployment, and a manageable level of inflation. By implementing expansionary fiscal or monetary policies, aggregate demand can be stimulated. Risks associated with expansionary policies include unacceptable levels of government debt and high inflation. The case studies in this topic discuss the most important current fiscal and monetary policy debates, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

1369 word count

Fiscal Policy Explained

Monetary Policy Explained

4.5 minutes

For a country in which you work or operate, what are the main risks the economy is facing? How can managers prepare for the consequences of these risks materializing?

After playing the  Econland  base case scenario and at least one other scenario, how did you adapt your policy decisions compared to the first time you played? Were you able to improve on your score for the base case scenario?

Discuss some of the areas of impact of each of your decisions while playing the simulation and relate these to the macroeconomic data in the reports section. For example, what do you expect the difference in impact to be between changes in the corporate tax rate and the income tax rate?

How did the circumstances of the either rollercoaster or stagnation scenario impact the policy decisions that you made?

About this module

The study of macroeconomics deals with the analysis of an entire economy, usually a country, but potentially also a group of countries or a region with a country. This module introduces learners to key topics in macroeconomics, including national income (GDP), productivity, inflation, unemployment, and international trade.  Macroeconomics Simulation: Econland  can be used throughout the module or as an integrative exercise towards the end, when the topics of fiscal and monetary policy are introduced.

In this module, case studies apply macroeconomic concepts to national economies and discuss the managerial implications of macroeconomic developments. Instructors looking to link the topics of the module to current events can use the weekly economics newsletter,  Econland News .

Economics Subject Guide: Finding Case Studies

Finding case studies, case studies.

Case studies are often used in business courses to illustrate management problems. A case study tells what happened to and in a business (or industry) over time. They allow you to learn about real world organisational problems and how they can be addressed. They challenge and develop your problem solving abilities. They are usually written by academic institutions or professional bodies and intended to be used as teaching material. Some are based on real companies; some are entirely fictitious and designed to illustrate a particular situation.

Case Studies can be found across a range of resources including in books, journals, professional magazines, databases, company websites and online.

Excellent guides to analysing and writing case studies are available free online from  Cengage Learning  and the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland .

Economic projects delve into various aspects of how societies produce, distribute, and consume products or goods and services. Whether you’re a student looking for compelling economics project topics or someone curious about the world of economics, this guide will walk you through some fascinating areas to explore.

How Do You Write An Economic Project?

Table of Contents

Writing an economic project involves several steps to effectively research, analyze, and present your findings. Here’s a general guide on how to write an economic project:

  • Choose a Topic: Choose an economic subject that captures your interest and is in line with the requirements of your assignment or the objectives of your research. It could be a macroeconomic trend, a microeconomic analysis, or a specific area like environmental economics or development economics.
  • Conduct Research: Collect pertinent data and information from credible sources like scholarly journals, government reports, economic repositories, and literature. Make sure to critically evaluate the credibility and reliability of your sources.
  • Outline Your Project: Create an outline that organizes your ideas and arguments logically. Include sections such as introduction, literature review, methodology, findings, discussion, and conclusion.
  • Write the Introduction: Begin with an introduction that provides background information on your topic, states the purpose of your project, and outlines the structure of your paper.
  • Review the Literature: Perform a thorough examination of existing literature and theories pertinent to your subject matter through a literature review. Identify any deficiencies or areas lacking sufficient research that your project intends to fill.
  • Develop a Methodology: Describe the methods you used to collect and analyze data. This may include quantitative techniques such as econometric modeling or qualitative approaches like case studies or interviews.
  • Present Your Findings: Present the results of your analysis in a clear and organized manner. Use tables, charts, and graphs to illustrate key findings and trends.
  • Discuss Your Results: Interpret the implications of your findings and discuss their significance in relation to existing literature and theoretical frameworks. Address any limitations or constraints of your study.
  • Draw Conclusions: Provide a condensed overview of your project’s key discoveries and derive conclusions from your analysis. Consider the broader implications of your research and suggest areas for further study.
  • Write the Conclusion: Conclude your project by restating the main points and highlighting the contribution of your research to the field of economics. Discuss any practical implications or policy recommendations arising from your findings.
  • Cite Your Sources: Make sure to cite all sources properly used in your project according to the appropriate citation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago).
  • Proofread and Edit: Finally, carefully proofread your project to check for errors in grammar, spelling, and formatting. Ensure that your writing is clear, concise, and coherent.

By following these steps, you can effectively write an economic project that demonstrates your understanding of economic concepts, analytical skills, and ability to communicate research findings effectively.

What To Avoid For Economics Projects?

When working on economics projects, it’s essential to be aware of common pitfalls to avoid. Here’s a list of things to steer clear of:

  • Lack of Clarity in Research Question: Ensure your research question is clear, specific, and well-defined. Avoid ambiguity or broad topics that make it difficult to focus your research.
  • Poor Data Quality: Avoid using unreliable or outdated data sources. Ensure your data is accurate, relevant, and obtained from reputable sources.
  • Ignoring Assumptions: Be transparent about the assumptions underlying your analysis. Ignoring or glossing over assumptions can weaken the validity of your findings.
  • Overly Complex Models: While sophisticated models can be impressive, avoid unnecessarily complex models that obscure key relationships or make interpretation difficult.
  • Ignoring Alternative Explanations: Consider alternative explanations for your findings and address potential counterarguments. Ignoring alternative explanations can weaken the credibility of your analysis.
  • Misinterpreting Correlation as Causation: Be cautious when interpreting correlations as causation. Correlation does not imply causation, so ensure you have robust evidence to support causal claims.
  • Ignoring Feedback Effects: Consider feedback effects and dynamic interactions between variables in your analysis. Ignoring feedback effects can lead to biased or misleading conclusions.
  • Ignoring Heterogeneity: Recognize heterogeneity within the population or sample under study. Ignoring heterogeneity can lead to overgeneralization of results.
  • Overlooking Endogeneity: Be mindful of endogeneity issues, where the relationship between variables is bidirectional or influenced by unobserved factors. Addressing endogeneity requires careful modeling and appropriate techniques.
  • Inadequate Literature Review: Conduct a thorough literature review to situate your research within the existing literature. Avoid overlooking relevant studies or failing to acknowledge prior research.
  • Inadequate Discussion of Limitations: Acknowledge the limitations of your study and discuss their implications for the validity and generalizability of your findings.
  • Poor Presentation and Organization: Ensure your project is well-organized and clearly presented. Avoid cluttered or confusing visuals, inconsistent formatting, or unclear writing.

By avoiding these common pitfalls, you can enhance the quality and credibility of your economics projects and contribute meaningfully to the field of study.

Economics is a dynamic and multifaceted field, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Whether you’re interested in understanding the forces shaping the global economy or seeking solutions to pressing social issues, there’s a wealth of topics to explore.

By delving into these areas, you’ll gain valuable insights into how economies work and how they can be improved for the benefit of all. So, don’t hesitate to dive into economics project topics and start exploring the fascinating world of economics.

In 2016 rental vacancy rates dropped to as low as 0.6% in Greater Victoria. When compared to the national average of 3.3% it is clear why many media channels and individuals were calling it a ‘housing crisis’. Students were especially hit hard by these low vacancies, with some international students at Camoson college having to return home when they couldn’t find a place to stay. Using our competitive market model, let’s examine some of the factors that played into this crisis and policies that could be used to fix it.

Read more about the Victoria Housing crisis.

Below is a representation of the Victoria Housing Market.

1. Label Figure CS3 a. with the Equilibrium price and quantity, and label supply and demand curves as either renters or landlords.

image

If supply is equal to demand there should be no vacancy, but we know that a 0% vacancy rate would be an extremely difficult market for renters.

2. Explain why a housing market at equilibrium could still have a vacancy rate of 4%.

One factor that has been blamed for the housing crisis is Airbnb. Airbnb describes itself as  an online marketplace and hospitality service, enabling people to list or rent short-term lodging including vacation rentals, apartment rentals, homestays, hostel beds, or hotel rooms, with the cost of lodging set by the property owner. City councillors have targeted these short term rentals, saying that many landlords have opted to Airbnb their home, rather than rent out longer term. The growth of Airbnb in Vancouver has been shown below.

3. Assume 3000 landlords decide to switch from renting to Airbnb, show the impact of the changes on Figure CS3 b. Label the new equilibrium price and quantity.

economic case study topics

Note that Airbnb has been adamant that short-term rentals have had a neglible impact on the housing market, citing that in Vancouver only 320 hosts rent out thier properties often enough to make more money that long term rentals. That represents only 0.11% of the total housing units. In Victoria, that would mean only 25 units are affected by short-term rentals.

Tom Davidoff , a  University of B.C. business professor, said t he general public frequently looks at the fact that Airbnb is popular in expensive neighbourhoods and concludes that it is Airbnb that drives up rents there. But, he said, those neighbourhoods were expensive anyway and the impact of Airbnb taking a certain slice of the available stock is minimal.

Another factor that has had an impact on the rental market is the inability of many young Canadians to buy homes. Not only have house prices skyrocketed, but more are burdened by student loans out of university. It is estimated that it takes 3 times longer (15 years) to save enough to have a 20% downpayment on a house than it did in 1976. This reduction in Canadians mortgaging a home has caused an increasing amount to enter the market.

4. Assume 9000 new renters enter the market instead of mortgaging homes, show the impact of the changes on Figure CS3 b.  Explain the impact of both the shock from Airbnb and the shock from less housing buyers on equilibrium price and quantity. Do the shocks work together or oppose one another?

In the housing market, prices are slow to adjust, landlords cannot simply raise prices immediately under the Residential Tenancy Act. Landlords can only raise prices when negotiating a new contract. This causes many unjustified evictions from landlords as they want to charge the new equilibrium price. In the short-term, prices stay relatively the same causing shortages or surplus.

5. Assume price remains at the original equilibrium , calculate the magnitude of the shortage or surplus of housing that results. Explain the impact this shortage will have the behaviour of landlords.

The British Columbia government unveiled a $500-million affordable-housing plan targeted at communities that have struggled with a shortage of low-cost housing.  Premier Christy Clark announced her government’s commitment to fund 68 new projects to help address the crisis

Groups have criticized the government response, saying that they have ignored many other avenues that could more easily increase the supply of affordable housing.

The Spatial Effect of Integrated Economy on Carbon Emissions in the Era of Big Data: A Case Study of China Provisionally Accepted

  • 1 School of Economic and Management, Xi'an University of Technology, China
  • 2 School of Business and Circulation, Shaanxi Polytechnic Institute, China

The final, formatted version of the article will be published soon.

The digital economy has the characteristics of resource conservation, which can solve China's high carbon emissions problems. The digital economy can quickly integrate with the real economy, forming an integrated economy. However, it is still unclear whether an integrated economy can effectively reduce carbon emissions and achieve China's 'dual carbon goals'. Therefore, this study takes 30 provinces in China as the research object, constructs the integration economy index system through the statistical data from 2011-2021, and explores the spatial effect of the impact of the integration economy on carbon emissions by using principal component analysis, coupled coordination model and spatial econometric model. The research results are as follows. (1) From 2011 to 2021, the comprehensive economy showed a trend of increasing yearly (from 0.667 to 0.828), and carbon emissions showed a slow decrease (from 0.026 to 0.017). (2) Due to the infiltration of China's economic development from the eastern to the western, the spatial distribution of the integrated economy shows a decreasing trend from east to west. The spatial distribution of carbon emissions may be related to China's industrial layout of heavy industry in the northern, and light industry in the southern, showing a trend of low in the south and high in the north. (3) The integrated economy can significantly reduce carbon emissions (the coefficients of influence, -0.146), and the reduction effect will be more obvious if spatial spillover effects are taken into account (-0.305). ( 4) The eastern coast, the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the middle reaches of the Yellow River economic zones all increase carbon emissions at a certain level of significance (0.065, 0.148, and 3.890). The Northeast, South Coastal and Southwest economic zones significantly reduce carbon emissions (-0.220, -0.092, and -0.308). The results of the Northern Coast and Northwest are not significant (-0.022 and 0.095). ( 5) China should tailor regional economic development policies, such as strengthening investment in digital infrastructure in the Northwest Economic Zone and fully leveraging the spatial spillover effects of integrated economy in the Northeast, Southern Coastal, and Southwest Economic Zones to reduce carbon emissions.
