15 Sites Looking For Writers Now – Byline Included!

There are many sites you can do ghost writing for, and this is fine if you have bills you need to get taken care of. But a reader mentioned to me the other day that she is really interested in advancing her writing career, and to do this she'd like to find more places to write for that will pay her while also giving her full credit for her work.

So I did some research and find places you can write for that will pay you a flat fee for your work while also giving you credit for it.

What is a byline?

If you're pretty new to the writing world, you may be wondering, “What is a byline anyway?”

Basically, this is just a a paragraph, or a few lines, of information about you that appears on articles you write. It gives you credit for the content, and ultimately makes it so you can use your articles in your portfolio since you are credited.

Ghostwriters do not get bylines, and many, many content sites (particularly those lower-paying ones that use writers for SEO and link-building purposes) will not put your name on the content you create.

And this is fine if you're OK with that. But it won't help you grow your writing portfolio.

When you're writing out your byline, you'll want to be sure to include your name, a link to your website or social media profiles, and some interesting tidbits about yourself.

Don't make it overly long — it needs to be just long enough to catch someone's attention, but at the same time you need to realize it will probably get skimmed over if it's a huge block of text.

1 – Listverse – Read Listverse Review – Pays $100 for lists, and you will get an author byline if your list is accepted.

2 – Bustle – Read Bustle Review – Always on the lookout for interesting content. If your work is published, your name will appear at the top of your article in a clickable link. When clicked, the link takes the reader to a page with your photo and some info about you, and your past work.

3 – Cracked – They will pay $100 for your first accepted article, plus you will get a byline. They get a lot of traffic, so you would also get a lot of exposure.

4 – How Stuff Works – If you are accepted as a contributor for How Stuff Works (not easy to do!), your name will go on your articles and you will have a short bio listed on their author page.

5 – Medium – You can write articles on just about any topic for Medium and get a byline! Many bloggers and authors looking to build up their portfolios and online presences do use Medium for those purposes. Medium will also pay you for your content after a month of consistent publishing on the site.

6 – iWorkWell – From the website, “Do a handful and we'll post your bio on the  iWorkwell Experts  page — linked to every article you co-author, and optimized so you'll be easily found on search engines and get your name out there as an expert.”

7 – Wanderful – This is a women's travel website that will pay you $50 per post, plus publish your name on any accepted content. They are looking for well-written content on destinations and itineraries, travel tips, global issues, and women to watch.

8 – LovetoKnow – Every article you write has your name at the top. Clicking your name leads to your detailed “About Me” page.

9 – Matador Network – This is mostly travel-related content. All your articles will have your name along with a short bio at the end as well as a link to your other Matador content. You'll have to keep tabs on their “opportunities” page to find the writing work when it is available.

10 – Salon – This site publishes content on a variety of topics, and they accept submissions from freelancers. You will be paid and credited for your work if your submission is accepted.

13 – Mental Floss – Mental Floss is usually looking for writers to contribute lists and/or short features across a wide variety of different categories including entertainment, history, science, and more. They do give you a bio and pay you for accepted content ($125 to $150 starting rates).

If you’re new to “ job board ” websites, they are websites with special search engines. People looking for work can search for jobs based on keywords, like “Christian writing jobs.”

You must sign up to use the site, but it is completely free. You can set up a profile with your work experience and a downloadable resume.

Indeed is a full-service job board that lists all kinds of jobs. They also have company reviews and salary information. 

You can view jobs without signing up, but creating a free account allows you to save a profile with a resume, and apply for jobs with less data entry.

Linkedin is the premiere networking and career-building website for entrepreneurs, influencers , freelancers, and job seekers of all kinds. 

It is free to sign up, and they have various levels of paid memberships that offer perks like Linkedin Learning, Premium job search tools, and more.

11. SimplyHired

Simply Hired is a job board for all types of work opportunities. Whether you are looking for a traditional full-time job, or a remote freelance role , you can find listings on Simply Hired.

Spread the good news! Write for a Christian market.

From Christian headline news around the world, to inspirational features, to prayers and devotionals, and emotional first-hand accounts, these magazines are hungry for Jesus-inspired articles.

The two articles I wrote recently for a Christian magazine were based on my personal experience and expertise; “Giving a Talk at Your Church” informed readers how to prepare and present an oral presentation for a church-based, Christian audience. “Loving the Mentally Ill” discussed dealing with those with mental illness in your Christian congregation. I’m currently writing an article for a specifically Catholic Christian magazine about Jesus’ relationship to his mother Mary.

What’s important when writing for this market is to be sincere and honest. Prayer and reflection about your topics and their impact can only add to their quality. You’re writing to believing editors who can differentiate the wheat from the chafe. When you’re quoting the Bible, be sure to draw from the magazine’s Bible version and edition of choice.

2. The Forward

The Forward is a Jewish site and independent news organization that offers not only news but also commentary on politics, arts and culture as well.

When it comes to seeking content from freelancers, they will consider trend stories, series, multimedia and video projects.

While they don’t clearly lay out their compensation, they do state that compensation is “highly competitive for the right pitch”.

3. Guideposts

The typography is done well here. The text is easy to read and the different types of fonts complement each other nicely. Her lead magnet asks for your email address and in return, you receive free tools and printables. Her offering is fitting for the audience she wants to attract.

She uses her platform to promote her books and blogs but also to help others in need. Her website houses the Grace Case and Grace Flame; where you can buy heirlooms. The profits from it go to help change people’s lives. 

This helpful nature is felt at every corner of the site. The website captures the spirit of Ann. The website is soft and delightful. It welcomes you to her as not only an author but as a person.

2. Drs. Donna & David Lane

In a world where we are all scrolling to the next thing, staying in one place is a rarity. This website breaks that pattern with powerful imagery. A sequence of videos plays across the screen as text leads you through the journey. Within seconds you get a glimpse of the Doctor’s Lane and what they can offer you if you simply hop on board.

To contrast the striking imagery, we have a simple menu that emphasizes their blogs. The blogs are filtered into categories. This makes it easy for the user to find something that resonates with them.

As with any good website, they have tons more to offer. They have videos and extra content. You can even be rewarded with a free book if you sign up for their newsletter ! This is an excellent lead magnet.

The website goes far beyond their books. They even have a FAQ section as well as an invitation to email them personally. They care about their audience, and this is shown in multiple ways across their website.

We may be a bit biased since we designed it. But we’re sure that once you’ve seen the website, you’ll agree.

3. Karen Kingsbury

When clicking the link, you are introduced to Karen’s upcoming book with a background that suits the theme of the novel. You see the description as well as all the ways you can pre-order the book. This is a fantastic way to promote a book.

Then we have the official website. It gets straight to the point! The font is big and so easy to read.

The playful colors and some cursive fonts truly capture the essence of Karen’s books and pour it into her website!

We love how personal she gets on her ‘My story’ page. She dives deep into her life and what got her into writing… what led her to become a Christian author. Her story is inspiring!

On other websites, it’s called an ‘About’ page . But we feel ‘My Story’ fits Karen’s case. 

4. Kristy Cambron

The website has eye-catching colors with funky fonts. It even captures the promised vintage feel without looking outdated! We especially love the usage of tape to hang up pictures. Truly vintage!

The first picture where Kristy introduces herself is lively and fun! Consistency is key!

She has a good lead magnet. Within seconds you receive a pop-up to sign up and receive tons of worthwhile content. I know, I know. Pop-ups are not our favorites, but when done right they can really help you attract new readers.

Kristy offers a lot! In her ‘Media’ section, you can see videos of her teachings and stories. You can even see her research for her books! 

5. Valerie M. Bodden

Branding, Branding, Branding ! Valerie comes out the gate with exactly what type of author she is and what types of books she writes. 

She speaks directly to the website user, already building an immediate connection. On top of that, the CTA stands out on the right where you can sign up and get a free short novella.

Warm colors and an easy-to-navigate website make this a great author website if you need something streamlined.

Valerie also has a ‘Connect’ page where you can write her an email. We love seeing authors invite readers to engage with them! Readers get to talk to their favorite authors and ask them questions about their books. And this is exactly what Valerie is encouraging!

6. George Weigel

Another website we at Rocket Expansion designed to add to the list, folks!

And what is not to like about this website? Anything and everything George is in one corner of the internet – his website!

George offers tons of things on his author’s website. You can have a look at his online interviews, read various articles, as well as get access to lectures.

The effort and knowledge on this website are what makes it epic. It is definitely worth taking a few notes on what George is doing.

You can dive into any aspect of his world, but it is made easier with a search bar. This is a great feature if you have as much going on as George.

His newsletter name, The Catholic Difference, is super effective. It has a sense of prestige in that it is content that cannot be owned unless you sign up!

His website has professionalism to it that suits his branding well. When you rock up on his website, you know George means business.

A mixture of green and yellow buttons pops on the page. It makes it easy to go down the rabbit hole of Mary Alford. She even has options for where you can buy her books. This makes it convenient for readers to pick their preferred platform.

She has a wide range of books, and she even features her upcoming books on the home page. This solidifies her staying power as a Christian Author. It reassures readers that there’s more to come!

8. Francis Chan

Francis’ website is pleasantly simplistic. The mixture of light colors contrasted with dark colors is outstanding. Also, the font is clear and fits the design successfully.

The menu stacks vertically which gives room for the central text to be the main focus. We love that there is Mandarin that accompanies the English menu. This fits the author well.

The website’s contemporary design makes what the author has to offer to stand out. From podcasts to training to his New York Times Best Seller, Until Unity. You can feel the author’s branding throughout. 

9. Jen Wilkin

Jen’s website is professional and classy. The elegant design showcases her books and speaking events.

Although she doesn’t have a newsletter, she has a distinct booking option for you to request her to speak. What better way to get a lead than to attract those who want your services?

She has even more to offer with videos and articles where she discusses her passions for Christianity and helping others.

We appreciate that her website is streamlined and to the point!

10. Scott Sauls

Another example of a streamlined website. Scott has his books and blogs out on display in an elegant way. He also offers sermon podcasts on various platforms for anyone interested but can’t visit his church. This is a great way to connect with your audience.

The color palette used is easy on the eyes. It also allows the images for his books and blogs to be the focal point. The website works well to draw your eyes to what Scott has to offer.

We really enjoy how easy it is to navigate through his website. 

11. Lysa Terkeurst

This website provides a gentle feel, from the colors to the text. The neutral colors allow the content to shine.

The content feels personalized and authentic. She shares her favorite podcasts first before her recent ones. And the subtexts usually have a feeling of community. For example, ‘Let’s get into God’s Word together.’ You feel more connected to the author.

Her events page is particularly navigable. It has so much relevant information! Anyone interested will be able to easily pick the next event they can see her at. 

What we love the most is her home page’s lead magnet design. It allows you to customize what sort of updates and content you want from Lysa. You can tick boxes and get the experience that you desire!

12. Suzanne Leonhard

We were thrilled at the prospect of building a website for Suzanne’s post-apocalyptic Christian fantasy genre…

You’re stopped in your tracks when you land on Suzanne’s website. Suzanne promotes her book front and center for interested readers to get pulled in. A powerful video and an intriguing quote are a winning combination here.

The sleek design has a dark layout. It uses pops of thematic colors to draw focus. We found the logo in the bottom right fun to look at. It turns as you scroll through the page. It’s so unique!

Suzanne has a ‘Get in touch’ option where you can email her directly! Readers can engage with her personally. This way, she can build authentic connections with her community outside of her blogs.

Her lead magnet is quite good too. In exchange for your email address, you are given 3 chapters of her book for free, along with updates and blogs from Suzanne. 

We think the website fits the genre very well. Her identity is reflected solidly throughout her website.

13. John Mark Comer

John’s website is a one-stop shop. And wow, is it done well!

It is single-paged and polished. 

When you hover over the black dots on the right, information zips in and out to label the sections. This is the smoothest design yet.

You slide down the page, slowly being introduced to what John wants to show you next. The stylish design that’s fused with a hint of color-blocking, paves the way for an enjoyable website visit.

His lead magnet, although at the middle and end of the page, pops out. He offers free eBooks and updates in exchange for your email address. He also promises not to email too often which can help get more people to sign up.

His website is out-of-the-box, just like John himself!

14. Tracie Peterson

This website feels like a breath of fresh air! With its Classical design and warm colors, you can feel the heart of Tracie’s novels seep through the screen.

The website is subtle but direct. A neat feature in her ‘Books’ section shows all the places you could get her books from. This makes it easy for the user to pick their desired platform upfront.

We particularly love her ‘Note To Readers’ page. You are brought into her world for a moment as she answers some questions asked by her fans.

The lead magnet is not in your face but can be found everywhere on the website. 

15. James R. Hannibal

The home page opens and you find yourself captivated by an awesome book teaser . This sets the tone for the rest of the website. You’re in for a ride with this one.

James’ book covers are bold and iconic, and his website follows suit. There are so many colors used on the website. But they are all used so expertly!

The website does not follow the norm. Its ordered chaos fits James’ branding to a T. Each page on the author’s website is like stumbling into a new world, all curated by James.

This website goes to a whole new level with content. We’re talking ‘to infinity and beyond.’ He’s written multiple blogs that explain elements of his books, giving fans a magnified look into these worlds. There’s so much to discover!

His lead magnet is like honey to bees if you’re already a fan. He offers a top-secret digital dossier! He definitely knows his audience well.

12 christian magazines that pay freelance writers $200+ per article.

This past year has been particularly hard on Christian publishers, especially because of the often close connection to in-person church services being an important component of distribution. With most in person services brought to a halt by the pandemic, there are now fewer opportunities for writers to be published in Christian publications.

That being said, there are still many opportunities out there. The following is a list of 12 Christian publishers that pay at least $200 per article. We’ve found contact information, payment rates, and submissions guidelines pages for all of these articles.

— Jacob Jans

St. Anthony Messenger is a Catholic monthly magazine published by Franciscan Media. Editors look for inspiring uplifting material reflecting Catholic views and values. Editors do not accept simultaneous submissions and reprints from publications outside of Franciscan Media. Payment is $0.20 per word for features (about 2,000 words) and short stories (2,000-2,500 words). To learn more, read writers’ guidelines .

Guideposts is an inspiration-focused magazines about “people who have attained a goal, surmounted an obstacles, or learned a helpful lesson through their faith.” They typically publish first-person narratives. They pay $250 or more for stories. To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

Salvo : Writers interested in writing for this magazine should query the editor to see if their idea will be acceptable. Not only do querying writers need to explain their ideas, but they are also expected to give a little background information about their experience regarding the subject at hand. Salvo runs stories on sex, science, and society, and articles will ideally offer a “systematic deconstruction” of fallacious philosophies and ideologies. Payment is $0.20 per word and submission guidelines are posted here .

Eureka Street is an online journal published by Australian Jesuits. They’re looking for articles that “provide humane, ethical analysis or commentary on politics, religion, popular culture or current events in Australia or the world.” They’re also open to short fiction and creative nonfiction. They pay $200 per article. (Bonus: They also pay for poems.) To learn more, read their submission guidelines.

America Media provides “editorial content for thinking Catholics and those who want to know what Catholics are thinking”. They accept select unsolicited, unpublished pieces for their print, web and other digital formats. Payment reports suggest that they pay $0.25 to $0.38 per word. To find out more, visit this page .

Message is a bi-monthly religious journal. They love captivating comeback stories, inspirational profiles, well-crafted features and insightful Biblical analysis. They also consider financial, professional, health and relationship stories that have a strong Biblical foundation. They pay $75 to $300 per article. Psychology for Living (PFL) is a Christian psychology magazine published by the Narramore Christian Foundation. They publish articles ranging from those that deal with psychological problems to those that discuss communication and family relationships. They pay $200 for articles of 1,200 to 1,700 words and $125 for articles of less than 1,200 words. For previously published articles, they pay $75. For more details, read their writers’ guidelines .

Relevant Magazine covers the intersection of faith, culture and life. Their readership is mostly “Christian 20 and 30somethings who are looking for purpose, depth and spiritual truth.” Our sources suggest that they pay $0.20 per word for print magazine articles. They do not pay for web articles. To learn more, refer to this page .

DTS Magazine is Dallas Theological Seminary’s official publication. They “publish articles applying biblical truth to life as a ministry to friends of Dallas Theological Seminary.” They prefer articles written by their “alumni, faculty, students, staff, board members, donors and their families.” They prefer articles of 1,500 words. They pay $150 for reprints and up to $500 for original articles. For online content, they pay $50 to $100 per article. Details here .

Connect Journal is a print and online publication by ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Youth Ministry Network. They “support adults working with children, youth and families in ELCA congregations by provoking thought, reflection and by providing resources.”  According to a previous report, they pay $200 for full-length print features, and $50 for sidebar-length and full-length web articles. That information appear to be outdated, unfortunately. They can be contacted here.

Faith & Leadership is a biweekly, online magazine that is a learning resource for Christian leaders. They are always seeking new writers and stories. Their feature articles are 1,500-2,000 words, essays are 800-1,000 words, and Q&As are 1,000-1,500 words. They pay $1,500 for feature articles and $300 for essays. They also pay for mileage, parking, and other expenses. For details, read their submission guidelines .

National Catholic Reporter (NCR) is a biweekly newspaper that reports on “the Catholic Church and justice issues.” They want hard news and sharp features. Their features are typically 1,200 words and commentaries are around 800 words. They don’t publish poetry or fiction. Query first. Cigar City: Tales From a 1980s Creative Ghetto Turns Five!

Cigar City is a collection of linked short stories about the young artists, writers, poets, musicians and actors who inhabited Tampa’s Ybor City in the 1980s. Drawn by urban authenticity and cheap rents, they created a surreal, chaotic, arts scene set against the backdrop of the empty cigar factories and shotgun shacks of Tampa’s immigrant past. The Ybor scene drew international artists like James Rosenquist and mirrored what was happening in New York’s East Village.

Now, at five, Cigar City is getting new life. Author Paul Wilborn will celebrate with appearances throughout St. Petersburg and Tampa. Select events will include live music by Paul’s four-piece group and readings featuring actor Eugenie Bondurant.
