A PhD is a big commitment – you've heard it before. It’s a commitment of time, energy and (yep, you guessed it) money. But financial help is available. So, realistically, how much does it cost to do a PhD?

There’s how much a PhD costs, and then there’s how much a PhD costs after you factor in tuition scholarships . It’s also important to note that the cost of the program itself is only one component of how much you will actually spend doing your PhD.

You also need to consider:

• general living expenses and how you will afford these during the 3-4 years you’ll be studying your Doctor of Philosophy
• student services and amenities fees
• travel and accommodation expenses for non-essential workshops or conferences, should you wish to attend.

Scholarships and financial assistance programs can give you a leg up financially. After all, deciding whether or not to do a PhD shouldn’t just be about if you can afford it.

What is the cost of a PhD?

Let’s tackle this systematically and break down each of the main costs associated with a PhD.

How much do PhD programs cost?

There are 2 key factors that affect the cost of your PhD program:

• the field in which you’re studying
• whether you’re studying full time or part time.

Of course, everyone’s PhD journey differs, and students can take anywhere between 3 and 4 years to complete their PhD full time, and 6 to sometimes 8 years to complete it part time. This is why we’ve broken down fees per year, even though they’re actually charged per research quarter at UQ.

With this in mind, we’ve also included the below table, to outline how much an average PhD at UQ would cost, based on our findings that students typically finish their PhD in 3 years and 9 months .

These figures can look super daunting at first, but it’s important to note that most students in Australia don’t undertake a PhD without securing a scholarship that will cover all of their tuition fees.

Student services and amenities fees (SSAF)

Another key cost of doing a PhD is the student services and amenities fee, which is also charged per research quarter. It’s typically the same amount per quarter, but the cost does differ depending on whether you’re studying full time or part time, and if you’re away for a short period on field work (remote).

You can apply for an SA-HELP loan to defer your SSAF. There’s no limit to the amount you can charge to the loan; however, you will need to start paying it back once you begin earning a salary over the compulsory repayment threshold ($51,550 as of 1 July 2023).

What’s the cost of living during a PhD?

This expense isn’t quite as straightforward to calculate as tuition costs and is largely dependent on your lifestyle and where you live. If you’ve been a student for some time already, you probably have pretty strong budgeting game – but here are a few essential expenses that you can break down to better assess your weekly cost of living while doing your PhD:

• bills (utilities, internet, phone)
• transport (public or fuel)
• recreation.

You can apply for a living stipend scholarship while you do your PhD to assist with the cost of living while studying. This scholarship provides  $35,000 a year  (for 3.5 years with the possibility of extension), so that’s about $673 a week to cover all the costs listed above. If that doesn’t quite fund your living expenses, you can look at a range of other scholarships that may provide further financial support.

What kind of travel and accommodation expenses are associated with a PhD?

Some PhD projects require you to travel outside the area in which you live to conduct research. Any travel that’s essential for your research should be factored in by your supervisor and school or institute at the time of application. However, sometimes there are conferences or workshops that you may wish to attend, that aren’t ‘essential’, but would be beneficial to your professional development. There may be scholarships available to you that include travel and accommodation allowances for these additional, non-essential research-related activities.

PhDs obviously don’t come cheap. But the upside is that there’s accessible funding and scholarship support for both tuition and living expenses. And unlike undergrad student loans, you don’t have to defer fees and pay them back down the track (except for your SSAF).

At UQ, you’ll apply for tuition and living stipend scholarships offered by UQ at the same time as your PhD application. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, evidence of research capability and the quality of your research project – much the same as the criteria for having your PhD proposal approved (if required).

The important thing is to go into your PhD with a realistic outlook and a backup plan when it comes to finances. You want to know that you can carry your research through to completion, and that means having a financial plan, as well as the academic drive, to make this possible.

Admission Requirements

Approval for admission to a PhD requires an applicant to demonstrate that they have sufficient background and experience in independent supervised research to successfully complete the course. It also requires the University to ensure that appropriate supervision and resourcing are available. Applicants are required to demonstrate that they have met the requirements of the University Policy on: Adequate Research Preparation and any other requirements for admission of the University, and— (a) have a bachelor's degree of this University or equivalent qualification; or (b) (i) have previously undertaken work of a sufficiently high standard towards a higher degree by research in this or another approved institution but not have submitted it for any degree; and (ii) have completed an appropriate PhD research proposal;

A student who wishes to undertake a PhD in the field of creative writing must, in addition, submit a substantial folio of published creative work, normally in the form of one or more books.

Prior to enrolment,  all applicants are required to demonstrate that they have met the University’s English language requirements .

But, there's a good chance that you won't pay the full fees because of the funding on offer. Many Australian PhDs will also be advertised as pre-funded projects, especially for Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM) topics.

Living costs

There is a high standard of living in Australia, but with that comes a higher than average cost of living. According to Numbeo , the cost of living in Australia is (on average) 5.17% higher than in United States. This doesn’t include rent which is on average cheaper. It will also depend on where in Australia you want to live and the sort of lifestyle you want to have.

The Australian Government estimates that students will need at least AUD $24,505 (USD $15,610) for each year of their course. This is the amount of money you will need to have available to apply for a student visa .

Other expenses

As an international student, you (and anyone you bring with you) will need health insurance to cover the duration of your stay. There are various providers you can choose from, but you need to make sure they meet the standards set by Australia's Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) guidelines .

There are student offers so shop around for the best deal. A quick quote from ahm OSHC for a single person for a year came back with AUD $570 (USD $365). Your university can help you decide which insurance policy is best for you.

You’ll also need to apply for a visa. Australia now only offers one visa for international students: the Student Visa (subclass 500). The standard cost is AUD $710 (USD $450). You may have to pay extra if you’re bringing people with you, but you can use the Australian Government searchable visa cost database to help.

Government funding

You can use the Australian Government’s scholarships search tool to find out what scholarships you may be eligible for. Here are a couple of the main ones to consider as an international student:

Australia Awards

The aim of the Australia Awards is to boost opportunities for students from partner countries to study, research and develop professionally in Australia. The Awards combine scholarships from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT), the Department of Education and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

Destination Australia

The Destination Australia Program (DAP) is an Australian Government program valued at up to AUD $15,000 (USD $10,300) per student, per year. As a PhD student, you can access these scholarships for up to four years.

Research Training Program (RTP) scholarships

The Research Training Program at the Department of Education is a pool of funding that can help offset your tuition fees, act as a stipend to help with living costs, or be an allowance to help with costs such as relocation, publications and health cover. Applications for these scholarships are made directly to a participating university .

Coming from the US

The good news is that if you’re a US student, you can usually bring your US Financial Aid with you. There are also some international organisations and charities that offer US scholarships for international study , but you’ll need to apply for them in your home country.

Coming from the UK

To encourage UK students to study in Australia, as well as government and university funding options, there is also the The Northcote Postgraduate Scholarship which is awarded by the Northcote Trust, and administered on the Trust's behalf by the Britain-Australia Society.

Institute and university scholarships

A lot of Australian universities offer scholarships based on academic performance. It’s worth checking with the admissions team or international office at your university before applying to see what you might be eligible for.

There may also be specific funding from institutes who have partnerships with certain member universities. The Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE), for example, has a Postgraduate Research Award of AUD$9,000 (USD $5,730) per year. The Award also provides travel and accommodation support for conferences and field work.

What is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)?

The Doctor of Philosophy is a highly regarded research degree, in which you will conduct independent research under the supervision and guidance of experts in their field. The Doctor of Philosophy requires the completion of a thesis which demonstrates original thought and academic rigour, and which makes a significant contribution to existing knowledge. The PhD is available to study on campus in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, offshore and online.

Our Higher Degree by Research allows you to develop your research skills, so you are work-ready in academic and industry contexts. By conducting original research and practising cognitive flexibility, you will craft your professional identity and be able to communicate the impact of your findings to interested stakeholders in real-world applications.

The Doctor of Philosophy is comprised of independent research under the guidance of experienced supervisors, culminating in the submission of a thesis, to be presented in one of the following formats: standard narrative, publication, exegesis or PhD by folio. You will be required to provide an Expression of Interest and a Research Proposal as part of your initial application.

• What is a Higher Degree by Research (HDR)? A higher degree by research is focused on undertaking self-directed independent research that contributes to discipline-based knowledge and theory building. A student pursuing a higher degree by research requires core knowledge in a discipline, research skills, self-motivation and drive, the ability to work independently with a supervisor, critical thinking skills and very strong academic writing skills.

The first step in the application process is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) .

This document needs to be completed in full. The EOI is an opportunity to show your academic ability, your ability to follow instructions and your attention to detail. Incomplete applications and EOIs will be rejected.

The EOI needs to be submitted to [email protected]  along with the following supporting documentation:

• Official and certified copies of all academic transcripts (including course offerings and results) and certificates attained from any and all undergraduate and postgraduate courses completed
• Proof of citizenship
• Evidence of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)

If applying for a PhD:

• copies of, or links to, any research publications authored by you (in English), and
• An up-to-date curriculum vitae.

The EOI is a screening assessment to ascertain:

• Your level of academic writing
• Your ability to interrogate literature
• The alignment of your project area to the targeted projects of TUA
• Your ability to follow instructions and problem solve, and
• Your understanding of the current literature and research opportunities.

When we have received your EOI, your academic eligibility will be assessed first. If you have met the academic criteria for entry, the quality of your EOI will then be assessed based on the criteria listed above.

Late or incomplete EOIs, including EOIs submitted with insufficient documentation, will not be assessed. If the EOI is approved, we will request a two-page Research Proposal. The Research Proposal should advance on your EOI, further developing your research idea and proposed methodology. To ensure your proposal is of the standard required for entry, we suggest you interrogate the research in your chosen area, ensure your proposal is founded in research and that clear gaps for future research have been identified.

The strength and quality of your Research Proposal will also be assessed, and supervisor availability will be determined.

Please be advised that Expressions of Interest and Research Proposals are run through software which identifies similarity rates to other submitted and published work. If your submission returns a high similarity rate, it will not be accepted and we will not review any resubmissions.

Applications can be rejected at any stage during the application process for a variety of reasons, ranging from not meeting the entry requirements, to the university being unable to supervise the project. Please be assured all efforts are made to carefully review and accommodate all applications.

• What is required in a Higher Degree by Research? A Higher Degree by Research is an advanced program of study which requires the candidate to conduct independent research into a particular topic in their field, while being guided by a supervisory team. It requires the submission of a thesis comprised entirely of original work and submitted for examination at the end of the student’s candidature. The submitted thesis must demonstrate original and critical thought, contribute to the current body of knowledge in the student’s chosen area, and be clearly and coherently written.
• What is the time commitment for a Higher Degree by Research? A full-time HDR course requires a 40-hour commitment each week. HDR students are entitled to four weeks of annual leave, and can apply for 12 months of additional leave due to exceptional circumstances such as illness or injury. Although the academic year at Torrens is divided into three trimesters, HDR students do not have trimester breaks and are expected to work consistently throughout the year.

The costs of a research degree

As a research student at Macquarie University, you will need to understand the costs involved with your degree and the fee payment process.

Research degree fees vary depending on whether you are a domestic or international student and whether your degree is coursework-based or thesis-based.

Domestic students

You are a domestic research degree student if you are enrolled in a research degree and are one of the following:

• an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• a New Zealand citizen
• an Australian humanitarian visa holder.

Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma of Research

When working out the cost of your tuition, you will need to take into account:

• course type and unit cost
• student services and amenities fees, textbooks etc.

Master of Research/Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy

Domestic students enrolled in either the Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)  program are funded by the Government under the Research Training Program (RTP) .

Students are entitled to a maximum of three years’ full-time equivalent study if undertaking a PhD, and a maximum of two years’ full-time equivalent study if undertaking a MPhil or MRes.

Students with incomplete research degrees will have their prior candidature period deducted from their full RTP entitlement when they enrol.

International students

If you are studying with us on an international student visa, you are considered an international student and must pay international fees.

Fee amounts for our graduate research degrees are available below.

• The approximate annual cost is based on a full-time study load completed over two enrolment periods.
• You will be required to pay the  commencement fee when you accept your offer. This fee will be taken off your first session tuition fees (i.e. it is not in addition to your tuition fees).
• Refunds of any fees paid will be in line with the Graduate Research International Fee Refund Policy .

International Out of Time (iOOT) fee

Students who apply for and are approved for an extension of Expected Work Submission (EWS) date in accordance with the HDR Variations to Candidature Policy will be charged a flat rate of AUD $2000 for a three-month extension (iOOT fee).

Students will be expected to apply for an extension of EWS date before the expiry of their candidature. If you do not pay your iOOT fee by the payment due date, late payment penalties may also apply.

Further information about the iOOT fees for the Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) are available below.

Master of Research

• Students will not be liable for full tuition fees for more than one year (full time equivalent) of the MRes program.
• Students may apply for up to two extensions of EWS date for three months at a time - a cumulative maximum of 0.5 EFSTL.
• The first extension of candidature for MRes for three months up to the end of January (for Session 1) or end of July (Session 2) will not incur a charge of full tuition fees or a write up fee.
• $2000 iOOT fee will apply for the second approved application for extension of EWS date.
• When a student has an approved extension, marks are not deducted should they submit on or before their new EWS date.

Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy

• Students will not be charged full tuition fees for the period beyond their standard period of candidature. The standard period of candidature is defined in the Graduate Research Rules .
• Students may apply for up to four extensions of EWS date for three months at a time - a cumulative maximum of 1 EFTSL.
• $2000 iOOT fee will apply for each approved application for extension of candidature.

iOOT fee FAQs

Can I apply for six months’ extension?

PhD and MPhil can apply for a six-month extension in accordance with the HDR Variations to Candidature Policy, however you will be charged for two three-month periods (2 × iOOT = $4000).

I have a scholarship, will it cover my iOOT?

Scholarships for international students funded by Macquarie University do not cover the iOOT fee. If you have an externally funded scholarship you will need to check with your provider or sponsor.

I don’t need three months; can I apply for less than a three-month extension and pay a lesser fee?

No, if you apply for an extension of EWS date you will be granted three months, for a flat rate of $2000. This is not pro-rata.

Can I submit before the end of my approved extension period?

Yes, you can submit before the end of your approved extension. If you submit your thesis within one month of your original EWS date after applying for a three month extension, the fee will be reversed and you will not have to pay.

When is the fee due?

The fee due date will be displayed in your eStudent account. It will be due one month from your original EWS date.

I haven’t submitted an extension of EWS date, will I be charged the fee?

You will only be charged the iOOT fee of $2000 when you apply for an extension of EWS date. If you do not submit your thesis and you have not obtained an EWS date extension your candidature may be ceased in accordance with the HDR Variations to candidature policy.

I withdrew from my program without applying for an extension and now I want to re-enrol to submit my thesis, will I be charged?

If you withdrew on or after your original course EWS date, yes, when you apply to re-enrol to submit your thesis you will be charged the iOOT $2000 fee and be given three months in which to finalise and submit your thesis. If you submit in the first month the fee will be reversed, and you will not have to pay.

I am a cotutelle student, will I have to pay?

Yes, cotutelle and joint PhD students who apply for an extension will be subject to the $2000 iOOT fee on application for a three-month extension of EWS date.

Will the fee apply when I am completing my thesis corrections?

No, if you are completing thesis corrections following an examination outcome of Award with Corrections you will not be charged tuition fees and you will not be required to pay the iOOT fee.

I have been asked to revise and resubmit my thesis, what fees will I have to pay?

You will not be required to pay full tuition fees for the period of enrolment for revision and resubmission of the thesis. However, you will be charged the iOOT fee for each three months of enrolment (4 × iOOT = $8000).

Your fees explained, research training program (rtp) fee offset scholarship.

The University of Melbourne offers a range of scholarship for students undertaking graduate research training. These scholarships are funded by the University, philanthropic gifts or Government grants.

All domestic students who are admitted to a Master by research or Doctoral degree at the University of Melbourne will receive a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to acknowledge the contribution from the Australian Government towards the cost of their tuition.

Other scholarships may provide a stipend towards the cost of living and a relocation allowance. International students may also receive Overseas Student Health Cover and a tuition fee offset.

Scholarships

Graduate research scholarships.

The Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship and the Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS) are the principal graduate research scholarships offered by the Faculty of Science. Both scholarships provide a stipend and a full fee offset. You will be automatically considered for these scholarships when you apply for the course. More about Graduate Research Scholarships.

Other scholarships

You will be automatically considered for these prestigious scholarships:

• Elizabeth and Vernon Puzey Scholarships : available to Australian citizens only, this scholarship provides an additional $10,000 per year pro-rata offered concurrently with an MRS or RTP scholarship.
• Rowden White Scholarships : available to both domestic and international students, this scholarship provides a one-off payment of $6,500 and can be held concurrently with an MRS or RTP scholarship.

The following scholarships are only available to domestic students. You must check the eligibility requirements and submit separate applications for each scholarship (in addition to your course application).

• The Fay Marles Scholarship is for applicants of Australian Indigenous descent or those experiencing compassionate or compelling circumstances.
• Sir John and Lady Higgins Research Scholarship is for applicants undertaking research in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry relating to the pastoral and agricultural industries.
• Ernst and Grace Matthaei Scholarship for applicants undertaking research in the field of optics.

• To start your PhD you need to clarify your research topic and seek an academic staff member to be your supervisor. This can sometimes take time so it is wise to allow several months for discussion with potential supervisors and for consideration of your application.
• Graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy is ideal if you wish to pursue a career in industry, academia or government with specialisation in your chosen field.

Applicants must have one of the following:

• an Australian-university Bachelor honours degree with First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Division A) or equivalent (with a thesis comprising at least two units), or
• an Australian-university Masters degree (with a thesis comprising at least two units) or equivalent, or
• other qualifications and/or experiences equivalent to First Class or Second Class Honours (Division A).

English language requirements

You are required to satisfy the applicable English language requirements  and this degree requires a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent . If you do not meet the English language requirements you may apply to study a University-approved English language program .

UniSQ offers a number of masters degrees  for you to study to help you meet the entry requirements for your chosen degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy comprises a minimum of 16 independent research units, although students would normally complete 24 independent research units, with the option to extend to 32 independent research units if needed.

Grant to help you pay your fees

All Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens commencing a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) degree will have their tuition fees paid by the Australian Commonwealth Government under the Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset scheme. The RTP Fees Offset scheme covers program fees for an HDR student up to a maximum period of four years for full-time study or up to eight years part-time study for a Doctoral degree, and up to a maximum period of two years for full-time or four years part-time for a Masters by Research degree.

As part of the enrolment process, students are required to submit proof of citizenship or permanent residency status and transcripts of all previous academic study. This documentation enables the University of Southern Queensland to determine eligibility for an RTP Fees Offset place.

• have not used RTP Fees Offset funding in the previous three years; or
• have already used RTP Fees Offset funding and have successfully completed an HDR degree. Once a student completes an HDR degree, full entitlements of RTP Fees Offset are restored.

If a student's RTP Fees Offset entitlement expires before completion of the degree, the student will be required to pay full tuition fees, or if meeting the eligibility criteria be able to apply for a FEE-Help loan .

The study expectations of PhD by distance mode students are the same as on-campus students. This means that you will:

• need to meet the same admissions requirements , including English-language proficiency

• go through the same candidature stage assessments as other PhDs from your faculty
• be subject to the same student rules that govern PhD study at UTS
• have the same expected timelines for your study as other PhD students
• be liable for the same course fees as other international students unless you are assessed as eligible for a tuition fee scholarship

As one of the leading countries for higher education, Australia is famous for so much more than just its warm climate, beaches and kangaroos. The Land Down Under is home to over 43 universities of which 36 institutions were ranked in the QS World University Rankings for 2021.

2. Charles Sturt University

Charles Sturt University offers hundreds of courses spread across five welcoming campuses. Pursue any one of them, and you stand to get jobs faster than graduates from any other Australian university, according to QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey 2021. They earn an average of A$70,000 straight after graduating. If your campus is in a regional area, you could be eligible for extended post-study work rights too.

It’s rated the number one university in Victoria for the way it supports students and develops their skills. It’s also number one in Victoria for helping its graduates find full-time employment.

That’s not all. FedUni is the alma mater of Australia’s leaders, innovators and thinkers for 150 years. ranked in the top 100 worldwide for Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities and Communities and Gender Equity.
