[Book Review] ‘Here, There and Everywhere’ by Sudha Murty

Sudha Murty Here, There and Everywhere Download PDF free

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sudha Murthy is a philanthropist, entrepreneur, computer scientist, engineer, teacher and, above all, an extraordinary storyteller. She has been conferred with many prestigious awards such as the R.K. Narayan Award for Literature, the Padma Shree from Government of India , the Attimabbe Award from the Government of Karnataka, and the Raymond Crossword Lifetime Achievement Award. She writes in various genres like adult fiction, adult non-fiction, technical books, travelogues and children’s books.

Powerful stories, no matter where they come from, are meant to be told.

Here, There and Everywhere is a compilation of stories written by Sudha Murthy. This is her two-hundredth book and is a collection of 22 stories on various themes such as honesty, philanthropy and success .

The book starts with a touching and thoughtful introduction from the author, where she reminisces about her close bond with her brother and other siblings. She tells the reader that this book is a collection of the most cherished experiences from her life, which are like beautiful flowers. All the flowers are put together to form a beautiful garland, which she would like to dedicate to her brother.

The short stories in the book are easy to read and fill the readers with positivity while forcing them to engage in some introspection. The stories can be understood even by young readers as the style of writing and choice of words are simple and pretty straightforward. While most of the stories are chosen from her other publications, there are two fresh stories about her literary journey and her take on what philanthropy truly means.

The Tale of Many Tales is the first story in the book that gives us a glimpse into Sudha Murthy’s literary journey. She fondly recalls her childhood days and how her mother played an importing role in creating in her a flair for both reading and writing. She narrates her difficulties in adjusting to English as a medium of instruction after completing her tenth grade from Kannada medium.

Murty also recounts her published articles and how one editor made her realize the importance of maintaining a fine balance between reality and imagination. The part of the story where she explains how she and her husband saved three hundred bucks a month and traveled by crowded buses and local trains just to buy books is particularly heart-warming and motivating in equal measure. It helps young readers to understand the importance of saving for things that they really want. She recalls the experiences that motivated her to pen down some of her popular novels in Kannada, such as her first novel Athirikthe , and the later ones like Mahashweta , Dollar Sose , among others.

Another fresh story in the book is The Meaning of Philanthropy wherein she explains the true meaning of philanthropy and how one should always give the best to others. The way she explains this profound subject in a conversational tone of writing is very engaging. The key takeaway from this story is that giving is a selfless act and that one actually does not need any money to be a philanthropist . To quote Murty, “The only thing you need to be a philanthropist is the attitude and determination to assist others.”

Though all the other stories are repeated from her other books, the readers certainly won’t mind giving them another read. The stories are crisp, short and to the point. They take you down the memory lane of her life and make you laugh, cry and think – all at the same time.

Here, There and Everywhere is a joy to read and is out-and-out worthy of a rare 5-star rating. The stories are relatable and written in a conversational tone. The language is simple – à la Sudha Murthy. Furthermore, the book is suitable for readers of all age groups. It teaches young readers about the most important values and principles of life, while it forces adults to rethink some of their notions of education, philanthropy and success.

Book review: Sudha Murthy’s Three Thousand Stitches isn’t a book you’ll remember

Three thousand stitches presents anecdotes from sudha murty’s life.

Dear Diary,

The write stuff!(Shutterstock)

I finished the book today. It left a mellow after-taste. I didn’t know what to make of it initially because the best way to judge a story is to gauge its effect. It felt light and uncomplicated, but unresolved, as if the pages ran out but the words shouldn’t have.

book review of sudha murthy short stories

Three Thousand Stitches won’t be the book I remember. It isn’t the kind of story that keeps flickering in and out of your consciousness. No random face with a peculiar nose or the lights hanging in the sky will remind me of this story. I knew when I finished reading that it just wasn’t this sort of a book.

It is instead the book I will forgetfully place on my shelf. Its pages will turn yellow and an accidental glance at the title or the author will spark a thought until I stumble on it again. The story won’t exist until the eyes allow it to.

The writer of Three Thousand Stitches is powerful in her tone. She is boastfully confident, and proud. At least her voice is. But don’t get me wrong. It isn’t a repulsive trait. It’s the energy that deserves recognition simply because some are born to be great at what they do. Like Cristiano Ronaldo is for football. He, despite his humble origins, has image after image of his contoured body sprayed with layers of tan. He is bashful, yes, but rightfully so.

The book has anecdotes presented in short stories of her experiences. She recounts the time she was called ‘cattle class’ because of the language she spoke and the way she dressed. The co-founder of one of the most successful IT companies in India tells of her ambition, when she was the only to woman to study engineering in an all-men’s college. She remembers her grandmother and wore silk sari with flowers in her hair. She describes the feeling of contentedness as she soaked herself in the holy waters of Varanasi. She speaks of her daily routine at the foundation she has nurtured so obsessively to help the needy. She detours into her travel diary and rejoices in finding a Bollywood connection everywhere she goes. She, for no logical reason whatsoever, ends the book by reciting her experience of attending an AA meeting to witness the havoc of alcoholism.

Sudha Murty (Aniruddha Chowdhury/ Mint)

Still, despite the assortment of emotions, let this serve as a warning -- there’s no eloquence in her words or even her sentences. It seems they’re written on a whim and a fancy. They are an insight into the author but they don’t give away enough. The fragments of her life are too far apart, like a lucky draw of moments she chose to display and tantalizingly blacked out the rest. The stories are featured like scriptures meant only to inspire and not provoke. They lack intensity and the episodes are penned with a childish naivety quite similar to writing in you, dear diary.

Does it help to know that she is the enigmatic Sudha Murthy, the philanthropist who gave her savings to create Infosys? Does her burdened name heighten your expectations from her? Does the knowledge of her authorship make you wish there were more dimensions to Three Thousand Stitches?

It does for me.

Yours Lovingly,

Book Review: My Thoughts on Sudha Murty and her book, 'Three Thousand Stitches.'

Three Thousand Stitches introduces us to the devadasi community and their sordid lives. Sudha Murty is a key contributor in making their lives better through her determination and her father's important advice.

In How To Beat The Boys , a seventeen-year-old Sudha strives to become an engineer despite all the obstacles that come her way. Sudha goes on to become the only female student in her entire college, showing her strength and perseverance.

In chapter three, Food For Thought , you will learn about the diverse vegetables and fruits used in Indian cooking and their surprising places of origin.

Fun Fact: Tomato , a prime ingredient in Indian cooking, used in making soup, rasam, rice, sandwiches, and chutney, did not originate in India, but Mexico.

In Three Handfuls Of Water , Sudha Murty is introduced to a holy place — Kashi — by her grandparents. She learns the significance of going there and ends up taking a vow that opens her the door to freedom.

In the fifth chapter, Cattle Class , she recounts an incident that took place at an international airport. Also published on various media channels, this story elicits a thought-provoking message about the society that readily judges people by their appearance.

Watch Now : Sudha Murty On Being Called 'Cattle Class'

A Life Unwritten is the story of the writer's father, a doctor, who is temporarily posted in a remote village. While there, he delivers a baby of an unmarried girl and ends up doing something kind that makes a difference in her life forever.

This seventh story titled No place like home depicts people who worked as housemaids in the Middle East and their horrific experiences.

In A Powerful Ambassador , Murty explains how movies were considered a luxury in her village, Shiggaon. During her college days, she was an avid moviegoer, often visiting the movie theatre with her friends to watch classic Bollywood movies. Further, when she tours the world, she is thrilled to learn that the charm of Bollywood films and their actors has not only captured Indians but people worldwide.

Sudha Murty says, "Bollywood has graduated from being a part of the movie industry to becoming a vital partner when it comes to business generation. All in all, it is a great ambassador for our unique country."

Rasleela and the Swimming Pool , the ninth story in the collection, tells Draupadi and Krishna's story from both the writer's and her grandchildren's perspectives.

When an old friend criticizes Sudha Murty for not sparing an hour for her, she is invited to spend a day with her at Infosys Foundation. Seeing her work, the friend becomes aware of the huge responsibility Sudha Murty has. To Mrs. Murty, her day is nothing short of a marathon. This is the theme of the tenth chapter, A day in Infosys .

When Sudha Murthy first discovered the term AA i.e. Alcoholic Anonymous, she grew curious. Multiple questions arose in her mind:

What is AA and how it plays a role in an alcoholic’s life?

Is alcoholism hereditary?

What is the success rate of de-addiction? and so on.

Researching about it on the internet was not enough. She wanted to gather the information first-hand . A friend’s relative, also a chairman of an AA committee, opens a pool of information to her by inviting her to an open meeting in a church.

There, participants share how alcohol brought them to the lowest points in their lives and how AA helped them cope with them. Several of them were now dedicated to educating others about it.

AA includes 12 steps, which include apologizing to those we've hurt, helping others, and surrendering to God. God need not be religious in nature. It can also be a higher power that exists within us.

It takes years for people to become sober. However, it isn't guaranteed. There are cases of relapses as well. Because of this, they meet regularly to control their urges.

AA is active in 186 countries and has helped many alcoholics become sober.

After leaving that meeting, Murty remembers the famous Marathi play "Ekach Pyala", where the first peg of alcohol ruins a married couple's life.

Alcoholism is a medically recognized disease.

Alcoholics Anonymous deals primarily with alcohol, though some people fall for smoking and drugs as well. Nobody can predict who will develop an addiction. But, organizations like AA contribute to a better society and give people hope.

The stories Sudha Murty writes, whether fiction or non-fiction, are light to read but have a lot of value. Her books do not contain fancy wordplay or extravagant sentences. Some of them even seem like a blank stating of events, but what I get to learn from her writing is still worth it for me. I think she is very open-minded w.r.t her generation and she feels like a person loyal to her roots.

Here are three stories that I enjoyed the most in this book and why I loved them:

Reading 'Food for Thought' was like exploring different cuisines and traveling to different countries with the author.

'Cattle Class' is a great example of how your clothes do not determine who you are. Maybe I'll use this story someday when I meet some narrow-minded jerk.

Sudha Murty's dedication in 'How to Beat the Boys' is inspirational because she broke stereotypes and followed her dream to become an engineer with flying results.

Grandma’s bag of stories – Book review

Bhumika Goel / September 2018

book review of sudha murthy short stories

The conversation between Ajji and her grandchildren is interesting and engaging. It lets us dig into the kind of bondings and inspiration grandparents can have on today’s younger generation.

The book takes you on a journey from a real world to the world of fantasies and fiction. The children in the story learn about the village life, farmers, birds, and animals while walking in the paddy fields with their grandfather. On the other hand, they learn about the moral values, culture and different virtues of life from the stories narrated to them by their loving and affectionate grandmother.

After narrating every story the grandmother discusses it with the kids in the first few stories. And this is the part which brings the crux of every story they listened. The visualizations the kids went to and the lessons they learned are all discussed at last which further increases the curiosity of the reader to read all the stories covered in the book.

Though we miss this discussion in the later part of the book, yet the stories keep us excited and interested enough to read.

Ajji’s stories are based on the values of courage, intelligence, foresight, and kindness. There are stories where she tells the significance of listening to others, how with the help of intelligent people in our life we can overcome any problems. The importance of being active in life, the goals that can be achieved through courage and determination, our outlook and perception of things and a lot of other emotions and values are discussed via engaging, interesting stories of different characters. The characters are so lively and imaginable that one starts connecting with them. There are stories about shopkeepers, mouse, kings, Gods, sculptors and other people.

The author Sudha Murthy has no doubt done a wonderful job of highlighting the importance of family bondings. In between the storytelling sessions, the family chores are very well inserted by the author. The concept of the grandmother telling a story a day is really nice as it keeps the stories length at a pace enough for young readers to carry on with their reading habit.

This book is truly one of the finest books of short stories. The language used in the book is simple and easy to understand with the inclusion of new words for kids to learn. I would recommend this to be a part of your kid’s books library. Do grab your edition here and enjoy reading it with your kids.

11-year-old reviews Sudha Murty's latest book

'Grandma's Bag of Stories' neither a novel nor a short stories book it is a mix of the two.

Here is a review of Sudha Murty's 'Grandma's Bag of Stories' by an eleven-year-old, Vidur Bahl, the book is published by Penguin India.

'Grandma's Bag of Stories' is a lovely book written by Sudha Murty. It is neither a novel nor a short stories book it is a mix of the two.

In this book the children go to meet their grandparents (Ajja and Ajji) in Shiggaon in North Karnataka. They also meet Vishnu Kaka's grandchildren who live next door. Together the seven children go to a fair, the weekly market, Rehmat chacha's place and a fun-filled picnic. But their favourite activity is to gather around and listen to their Ajja and Ajji's stories. The grandparents narrate, not one, not two but twentyone stories like 'Doctor, Doctor', 'Kavery' and 'The Thief', 'The Enchanted Scorpions' and many more.

My favourite story was 'What's In it For Me, which is about a mouse who wants to get paid for everything he does. I also liked 'The Enchanted Scorpions' in which a man sells his ancestral home to a merchant. The merchant finds a box of scorpions which was actually money but only a true family member could see it as that. The merchant finally hands over this family treasure to the grandson of the man who sold him the house.

The book is quite realistic and reminded me of the stories my grandparents have told me. And just like me, everyone was upset when this adventure comes to an end.

This story is based on Sudha Murty's childhood in Shiggaon. These stories are based on the stories her grandmother told her.

Vidur Bahl is a 11-year-old, he will soon be in class 6 at Step By Step school. He is a keen golfer and enjoys his horse riding and cricket. He is crazy about cars.
