Jennifer Love Hewitt

Who Is Jennifer Love Hewitt?

Jennifer Love Hewitt is an actress and singer who got her start on Disney's Kids Incorporated as a child actor. In 1992, she released her first album, Love Songs . In 1995, she earned the part of Sarah on the television drama Party of Five . Her big break came with the lead in the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. In 2005, Hewitt debuted on the CBS drama The Ghost Whisperer , which lasted five seasons. She returned to television in 2012 on the series The Client List .

Early Life and Career

Hewitt was born on February 21, 1979, in Waco, Texas. She is the daughter of two medical professionals who divorced when their daughter was just six months old. Hewitt got her first name from her 8-year-old brother, Todd, who chose the name Jennifer as an homage to his grade school crush. As a child, Hewitt showed an early passion for music. She started performing at the age of three when she made her debut as a singer at a livestock fair, not far from her childhood hometown of Nolanville, Texas.

Two years after her performance at the fair, Hewitt's mother enrolled her daughter in jazz, ballet and tap dance classes, which eventually landed the young performer a spot on the prized Texas Show Team, a cadre of performers who toured Europe and the former Soviet Union.

In 1989, a talent scout recommended that Hewitt and her mother move to Los Angeles so Hewitt could pursue better acting and dancing opportunities. It turned out to be sound advice. Hewitt quickly found work, appearing in television commercials for companies like Mattel Toys and LA Gear, the latter of which brought her on board for a world tour to promote its sneakers.

That work soon led to a regular part on Disney's Kids Incorporated , a music-driven show that catered perfectly to Hewitt's talents. Those same skills were also on full display for the 1991 release of the Dance! Workout With Barbie video, which featured the young actress. Other credits followed, not all of them huge successes, including a string of failed television pilots. In 1992, Hewitt stepped up her profile as a singer when she released her first album, Love Songs , a collection of romantic teen ballads.

Music Career

Hewitt tried to cash in on her new celebrity with a second album. The album performed poorly, and she returned to the studio again to record what would become a 1996 self-titled album. While it didn't produce any chart-topping hits, Hewitt's voice and style earned some praise from critics.

"Her feathery light voice is more soulful than you'd imagine," wrote one reviewer. "Depending on your threshold for harmless, white-bread teen pop, this album could be a welcome addition to your collection because, frankly, it makes you like her even more than her image did in the first place." Hewitt released her fourth album, Barenaked, in 2002, and followed up with Cool with You: The Platinum Collection , a compilation released in Asia in 2006.

Hollywood Star

As much as she could, Hewitt also continued to find more acting opportunities. Film work was a part of the mix, with roles in House Arrest (1996) and Trojan War (1997). Her big break came the same year as the release of Trojan War , with the lead role in the surprise scream-fest hit, I Know What You Did Last Summer . Hewitt made movie executives millions, and she earned herself big-time Hollywood stardom. While a sequel proved to lack the same kind of commercial punch, Hewitt scored another hit in 1998 with Can't Hardly Wait , whose storyline centered on a night at a final high school party.

Hewitt then starred in the unsuccessful Party of Five spin-off Time of Your Life , which found Hewitt's character relocating to New York to seek her real father. The show only earned enough ratings to make it halfway through the 1998-99 television year, and the actress started making moves to shed her teenage status. She attempted some fairly ambitious roles starting in 2000, when she starred in the made-for-TV movie, The Audrey Hepburn Story . A year later she starred alongside Sigourney Weaver and Gene Hackman in Heartbreakers (2001), which was followed up with a family action comedy The Tuxedo (2002) alongside Jackie Chan .

As one might expect, Hewitt's stardom has been accompanied with some criticism, both of her acting and her looks. Citing her performances in The Tuxedo and Garfield (2004), she was discussed as a possible Worst Actress nominee for the Razzie Awards, an annual ceremony dedicated to "saluting the worst that Hollywood has to offer."

Recent Work

The later part of Hewitt's career has seen her refocus her career on her television work. In 2005, she debuted as the lead star in the new CBS drama, The Ghost Whisperer , in which the actress plays Melinda Gordon, a young newlywed who can converse with the dead.

After The Ghost Whisperer ended its successful run 2010, Hewitt remained on television. In 2012, she took on the lead role in the Lifetime series The Client List . The series centered on Hewitt as Riley Parks, a woman in Texas who straddles the line between being a single mother and working as a massage therapist. The show was canceled in 2013 after its sophomore season.

In 2018, Hewitt took on the role of 9-1-1 operator Maddie Buckley on the TV show 9-1-1 .

Personal Life

In late 2007, an unflattering photograph of Hewitt was shown sporting a bikini on a beach in Hawaii surfaced. The photograph coursed through the Web, attracting snarky comments from bloggers and others. Hewitt rushed to her own defense, and fired back at the commentators.

"I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized," she wrote on her Web site. "To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image. A size two is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size zero doesn't make you beautiful."

Hewitt's love life has also been a subject of scrutiny. The actress—who continued to live with her mother well into her 20s and has long proclaimed she doesn't drink, smoke or swear—has been linked to a bevy of celebrity boyfriends, including singer Enrique Iglesias , musician John Mayer , talk show host Carson Daly, comedian Jamie Kennedy and actor Will Friedle, among others.

In November 2007, she became engaged to Scottish actor, Ross McCall. The pair had been dating for two years, but a little more than a year after their big announcement, the pair called off their wedding plans and their relationship.

On June 4, 2013, Hewitt announced that she is expecting her first child with The Client List co-star, Brian Hallisay. They met on the set of the series Love Bites in 2010, and started their relationship in early 2012. She gave birth to a daughter, Autumn James Hallisay, in November 2013. Between the announcement of the pregnancy in June and the birth in November, the couple quietly got married.

In May 2021, Hewitt announced they're expecting their third child.

Biography by Rebecca Flint Marx

The '90s saw actress Jennifer Love Hewitt rise from relative obscurity to become a bona fide teen queen. Hewitt was born on February 21, 1979, in Waco, TX. She made her first appearance on television in 1984 in the show Kids Incorporated. She also did a multitude of commercials, even doing a stint as an L.A. Gear spokesgirl at the age of ten. After spending the majority of the '80s working in television, Hewitt got her first film role in the 1993 film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit , but it wasn't until she got her big break as Sarah Reeves on Party of Five (1994) that she began to gain recognition. More recognition came first in the form of Trojan War (1997) and then I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997). The film, which capitalized on the growing trend in teen horror flicks catalyzed by Wes Craven 's Scream (1996), proved to be immensely popular among audiences, if not critics; it was predictably followed by a sequel, the aptly titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). In addition to her film work, which also included 1998's Can't Hardly Wait , Hewitt maintained her role in Party of Five and continued to star in commercials, most notably as the Neutrogena spokesgirl, as well as headlining her own Fox series, Time of Your Life , in which her Party of Five character, Sarah Reeves, moves to New York to look for her father.

Affectionately known as Love by family and friends, Hewitt has had moderate success as a pop singer, as well as on the big screen. She made her American musical debut in 1995 with the release of Lets Go Bang, and could also be heard singing two tracks for the House Arrest (1996) soundtrack in addition to playing a lead role in the film itself. Can't Hardly Wait , a 1998 teen movie which featured Hewitt as the girl du jour, made enough of a splash in the genre to be parodied in 2002's Not Another Teen Movie . In 2000, Hewitt received some critical acclaim for her portrayal of Audrey Hepburn in The Audrey Hepburn Story , a made-for-television dramatization of Hepburn 's life. The next year, Hewitt starred opposite Alien queen Sigourney Weaver in Heartbreakers , which featured the two actresses as mother-and-daughter con artists.

The year 2002 brought Hewitt the opportunity to star opposite martial-arts favorite Jackie Chan in The Tuxedo , though the movie would tank among critics and audiences alike. After lending her vocal cords to a series of animated roles ( The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina [2002], Groove Squad [2003], and The Hunchback of Notre Dame II [2001]), Hewitt wouldn't return to a major theatrical role until 2004. She is scheduled to work with Val Kilmer in Marc F. Adler 's Delgo , as well as play lead roles in Gil Junger 's If Only and in the much anticipated 2004 adaptation of Garfield starring Bill Murray . A return to the small screen as a medium with the supernatural ability to communicate with the recently departed in Ghost Whisperer proved to be a major event for Hewitt, and she would stick with the show for five years.

Over the coming years, Hewitt would remain a particularly strong actress in the realm of TV, appearing most notably on the saucy series The Client List. She joined Criminal Minds in season 10, playing an undercover FBI agent.

About Jennifer Love Hewitt

Jennifer Love Hewitt is an American actress, singer, songwriter and producer. She began her career as a child performer on television and rose to fame for her roles in the FOX series Party of Five and I Know What You Did Last Summer. She has since starred in numerous films, including Heartbreakers and The Client List.

As one of her biggest fans, I‘ve followed Jennifer‘s career from the beginning. She‘s brought such joy and inspiration into my life from a young age. Here‘s a more in-depth look at Jennifer‘s background and what makes her so special.

Early Life and Career

Jennifer was born in Waco, Texas on February 21, 1979. From the time she was a toddler, Jennifer loved to sing, dance, and entertain. Her mother enrolled her in jazz, tap, and ballet classes at age 3, and she went on to win the "Texas Our Little Miss Talent Winner" pageant at just 5 years old.

After spotting her talent, Jennifer‘s mom decided to move the family to Los Angeles when Jennifer was 10 to pursue her dreams of stardom. The big move paid off – Jennifer landed her first role in a Mattel commercial soon after arriving in LA.

Her first big break came in 1989 when she became a Disney Channel star on Kids Incorporated. Being cast on the show as a lead performer was a huge accomplishment for a young actress. It gave Jennifer crucial experience singing, dancing, and acting in front of the camera regularly.

90s Fame with I Know What You Did Last Summer

Jennifer‘s career really took off when she won the role of Sarah Reeves on Party of Five in 1995. She shone on the hit teen drama, earning a YoungStar Award nomination.

But it was her pivot to the big screen in the late 90s that made Jennifer a bonafide star. I Know What You Did Last Summer was a slasher film starring Jennifer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Freddie Prinze Jr. It grossed over $125 million worldwide!

I vividly remember lining up on opening night to see Jennifer shine in her first major film role. She brought the perfect mix of innocence and spunk to her character Julie James. Seeing her flee from the menacing Fisherman killer was edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

The massive success of I Know What You Did Last Summer cemented Jennifer as Hollywood‘s new "It Girl." I loved watching her stunning red carpet appearances and fashion shoots around this time. She was absolutely glowing!

Triumphant TV Comeback with Ghost Whisperer

Even the most loyal fans were bummed when Jennifer stepped back from acting in the early 2000s. But she more than made up for it with her triumphant return to TV in 2005!

Starring as Melinda Gordon on Ghost Whisperer, Jennifer completely captivated me once again. She made communicating with earthbound spirits look easy with her emotional depth and compassion. I never missed an episode during its 5 season run.

Jennifer also flexed her creative muscles by directing several episodes herself. How could you not admire her for wearing so many hats?

Recent Roles

While Ghost Whisperer remains her most memorable TV work, Jennifer continues to take on exciting acting challenges. She‘s popped up on hit shows like Hot in Cleveland and 9-1-1 over the past decade.

One of my favorite performances is her starring role in The Client List in 2012. Jennifer played a mother who takes a job at a day spa offering risqué services to make ends meet. She brought nuance and dignity to such a complex character.

At 44, Jennifer is still as talented and beautiful as ever! I can‘t wait to see what captivating characters she takes on next.

For Disney , she played Robin in Kids Incorporated (seasons 6–7) and voiced Medusa  in the Hercules episode " Hercules and the Gorgon " and Madellaine in the 2002 direct-to-video film The Hunchback of Notre Dame II . Although Madellaine doesn't sing in the sequel film, Hewitt sings " I'm Gonna Love You " for the end credits, possibly in Madellaine's point-of-view. She also voiced Thumbelina in the 2002 Miramax animated fantasy film The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina and herself in  The Weekenders . Additionally, she portrayed Margaret in the 1993 Touchstone Pictures film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and Jennifer Love Fefferman (a likely parody of herself) in Boy Meets World .

Hewitt was born in Waco, Texas , to Patricia Mae (née Shipp), a speech-language pathologist, and Herbert Daniel Hewitt, a medical technician. She grew up in Nolanville in Central Texas, and has close kinship ties in parts of Arkansas . After their parents divorced, Hewitt and her older brother Todd were raised by their mother. As a toddler, Hewitt was attracted to music, which led to her first encounters with the entertainment industry. At age three, she sang " The Greatest Love of All " at a livestock show. The following year, at a restaurant/dance hall, she entertained an audience with her version of " Help Me Make It Through the Night ". By age five, she had tap dancing and ballet in her portfolio. At nine, she became a member of the Texas Show Team, which also toured the Soviet Union.

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Jennifer Love Hewitt is best known for starring as Sarah Reeves on the hit drama “Party of Five” and its spinoff, “Time of Your Life.”

Hewitt starred in and executive produced the hit cable film “The Client List,” for which she received a Golden Globe® nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. The film’s success led to a weekly series of the same name, in which Hewitt starred and served both as an executive producer and episodic director for two seasons. She also starred in, executive produced and directed several episodes of the hit network series “Ghost Whisperer,” which ran for five seasons. Jennifer Love Hewitt

Jennifer Love Hewitt

  • [In a Playboy interview, Love commented about her breasts] I just accepted them as a great accessory to every outfit.
  • When I came to Los Angeles, it was the first time that I ever felt like I belonged somewhere. Not because it was wacky, but because people here understood what I felt like to perform, and there were other kids my age who wanted to do it. I didn't get looked at as, "God, you freak".
  • I don't consider myself a great dresser either. But I try. Most of the time, I'm in khakis and a white T-shirt. I'm a total Gap girl. Super casual, hair in a pony tail and no makeup. - in response to being voted as one of the Worst Dressed by People magazine.
  • We had this joke on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) . All the girls wore tiny tops, so we called it "I Know What Your Breasts Did Last Summer".
  • I try to find things that are insanely cheap and brilliant. My Bonne Bell lip gloss is about 75 cents, and I have worn it as my lipstick to almost every main event in Hollywood in the past two years.
  • I would just love once to be called sexy. Just because it would make me something other than cute.
  • I'm not a person who naturally loves to wake up in the morning and go "Yeah, I'm going to work out for five hours - wooh!" Like, that's not my thing. I'm from Texas. I like to eat carbs. I like to chill out with my friends and do anything but 150 push-ups and sit-ups.
  • [May 2018] I just have to apologize for how wrecked I look in all the pictures that have come out. I was literally melting. By the time I got to the red carpet, I was honestly melting. My hair was flat, my makeup was running off my face and I looked like I had completely forgotten I was an actress in this business who is supposed to look [perfect] when you step on the red carpet.
  • Gene Hackman and I - he doesn't smoke either - and he and I had to learn to smoke together. I think they were Honey Rose herbal cigarettes. It was just the two of us sitting together and practicing together. (laughs) That would be a great DVD extra.
  • [on interviewers focusing on her body when she was younger] I definitely look back on it and go, Ew. And it really started with I Know What You Did Last Summer, because that was the first time that I had worn a low top ... At a press junket for I Know or I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, I remember purposely wearing a T-shirt that said 'silicone free' on it because I was so annoyed, and I knew something about boobs was gonna be the first question out of [reporters'] mouths.

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Highlight reel, live performance, red carpet interview.

Scheduled Presenter – 10th Annual LA Music Awards 2001 (No-Showed)

Jennifer Love Hewitt was born in Waco, Texas, to Patricia Mae (Shipp), a speech-language pathologist, and Herbert Daniel Hewitt, a medical technician. She has English, Scottish, and German ancestry. She got her first name from her older brother Todd Daniel Hewitt (b. November 8, 1970), who picked the name after a little blonde girl he then had a crush on. Her mother selected her middle name, Love, which she goes by offstage from her best friend at college. Her parents separated when she was six months old. She was raised by her mother in Harker Heights, Texas. She made her official performing debut at age 3 where she sang at a livestock show. At age 5, she was taking tap, jazz, and ballet lessons which led her to joining the Texas Show Team, which toured the Soviet Union and Europe. At age 10, the family moved to L.A. with the encouragement of talent scouts, while Todd stayed behind to finish high school in Texas. Jennifer quickly found commercial work and a role on Disney’s Kids Incorporated (1984) in 1984. She went through a series of television flops before finally hitting it big on Party of Five (1994) in 1995.
