Who Is Beyoncé Knowles?

Beyoncé Knowles first captured the public’s eye as lead vocalist of the R&B group Destiny’s Child. She later established a solo career with her debut album Dangerously in Love , becoming one of music’s top-selling artists with sold-out tours and a slew of awards. Knowles has also starred in several films, including Dream Girls . She married hip-hop recording artist Jay-Z in 2008, and the couple has three children. She also holds the record for most Grammy wins ever by a female artist with 28.

FULL NAME: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter BORN: September 4, 1981 BIRTHPLACE: Houston, Texas SPOUSE: Jay-Z (2008-present) CHILDREN: Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Virgo

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born on September 4, 1981, in Houston. She started singing at an early age, competing in local talent shows and winning many of these events by impressing audiences with her singing and dancing abilities.

She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School, Parker Elementary School, and High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

Teaming up with her cousin Kelly Rowland and two classmates, Knowles formed an all-female singing group. Her father, Matthew Knowles, served as the band’s manager. The group went through some name and line-up changes before landing a record deal in 1997 with Columbia Records.

Destiny’s Child soon became one of the most popular R&B acts, with the release of their first, self-titled album. Gaining momentum, the group scored its first No. 1 single on the pop charts with “Bills, Bills, Bills,” off their second album. The recording also featured another smash hit “Say My Name.”

While enjoying her group’s success, Knowles began exploring other projects. She made her acting debut in 2001 with a starring role in Carmen: A Hip Hopera . She then co-starred with Mike Myers in the Austin Powers spy parody Goldmember the following year.

On the musical front, Knowles took center stage as a solo artist, releasing her first album, Dangerously in Love , in 2003. The recording became a huge success for her both commercially and critically. It sold millions of copies and won five Grammy Awards. On the album, Knowles worked with a number of different artists, including Missy Elliott , Sean Paul, and Jay-Z . She was rumored to be dating Jay-Z around this time, but the couple didn’t publicly acknowledge their relationship.

Destiny’s Child released their last studio album, Destiny Fulfilled , in 2004, and officially broke up the following year.

On her own, Knowles continued to enjoy great success. Her second studio album, 2006’s B’Day featured such hits as “Irreplaceable” and “Deja Vu.” On the big screen, she starred opposite Jennifer Hudson , Jaime Foxx , and Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls . The film was adapted from the hit Broadway musical of the same name.

In 2008, Knowles married rapper and music mogul Jay-Z in a small, private ceremony in New York City. Among the guests sighted at the wedding were Knowles’ mother, Tina Knowles; father, Matthew; sister, Solange ; Destiny’s Child members Rowland and Michelle Williams; and friend Gwyneth Paltrow .

The newlywed continued to work as hard as ever, promoting her latest effort, I am... Sasha Fierce (2008). Knowles scored two big hits off the album: “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “If I Were a Boy.” She also returned to the big screen that year, starring as R&B legend Etta James in Cadillac Records . The following January, Knowles sang James’ trademark song, “At Last,” for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at his inaugural ball.

In addition to acting and performing, Knowles ran a clothing line called House of Dereon with her mother. She also launched her own fragrance, Heat, in 2010. Throughout her career, Knowles has served as a spokesperson and model for several other brands, including L’Oreal and Tommy Hilfiger .

Knowles found herself under fire after performing a private concert for Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi on New Year’s Eve in 2010. She later donated her fee from the event to help victims of the Haitian earthquake. According to some reports, Knowles said that her father had been responsible for arranging the Libyan concert. She decided to drop her father as her manager in March 2011. Later that year, Knowles reached the top of the album charts with her latest solo release, 4 .

In January 2013, Knowles generated some negative headlines for her performance at President Obama’s second inauguration in Washington, D.C. She was criticized for reportedly pre-recording a version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and lip-syncing to her own track during the outdoor ceremony. Despite wide media coverage, in the days following the incident, Knowles didn’t publicly address the controversy.

Not long after, prior to her appearance at Super Bowl XLVII, Knowles performed the song live at a press conference. She explained to reporters that she had used a “backing track” at the inauguration, adding that she would “absolutely be singing live” at the NFL’s biggest event of the year, according to The Huffington Post .

Indeed, Knowles more than redeemed herself in the public eye at the Super Bowl on February 3, 2013. During the event’s halftime show, she took the stage and wowed the crowd, joined by her former Destiny’s Child bandmates Rowland and Williams for parts of her performance. Knowles also announced that her next major tour would start in the spring of 2013.

Beyonce and Jay-Z 2017 Grammy Awards

At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Knowles walked away with six honors—the most wins in a single night by a female artist. Her record was matched two years later by pop/soul artist Adele . In 2010, she also tied the record for most No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart, which is based on radio airplay. In 2011, she made the Forbes Top 10 list of entertainment’s highest-earning women. By 2013, Knowles had won 16 Grammys.

Knowles broke records once again on December 13, 2013, with her fifth studio album, self-titled Beyoncé . The album surprised fans and critics alike, as no promotion for the album had been announced prior to its release. The record, which Knowles called a “visual album,” was released exclusively on iTunes, with physical discs available for purchase after December 18. The record-breaking album sold more than 800,000 copies throughout the weekend it was released alone.

The collection—which was the fastest-selling album ever distributed by iTunes, having sold more than 80,000 copies in three hours—also marked Knowles’ fifth studio album to debut at No. 1. With that, she became the first woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with her first five albums. She released the Platinum Edition of the album in 2014, and the following year won three additional Grammys, including a Best R&B Performance award for “Drunk in Love.”

In February 2016, Knowles returned to the Super Bowl stage, once again earning raves for her performance. This time around she appeared with Bruno Mars and Chris Martin of the band Coldplay, highlighting her new single “Formation” and subsequently announcing a world tour. The tune, its video, and accompanying halftime show also garnered a wave of attention for politicized lyrics and imagery touching on everything from Black power to Hurricane Katrina.

Just two months later, the hour-long Knowles conceptual film, Lemonade , which presented tracks from the album of the same name released immediately afterward. The cable special showcased the singer reeling from the romantic and sexual betrayal of her partner while acknowledging the strength found in communities of Black women. Tennis star Serena Williams and young actor Quvenzhané Wallis also made appearances in the New Orleans–based project, which was helmed by a variety of directors and featured poetry from Warsan Shire.

Lemonade the album was only initially available via Tidal, the online streaming service backed by Knowles’ spouse, Jay-Z , and then eventually became available on iTunes and Amazon with its accompanying film. Musical contributors to the project, which quickly garnered acclaim, included Jack White, The Weeknd , James Blake, and Kendrick Lamar . Lemonade debuted at No. 1, making Beyoncé the only artist in history to have all of her first six studio albums reach the top of Billboard’s album charts.

In February 2017, a pregnant Knowles delivered a surprise performance at the Grammys, singing songs from Lemonade amid a swirling spectacle of lights, holograms, and backup dancers. Although she lost the coveted Album of the Year Grammy to Adele , she did take home two awards, for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video.

In March 2018, reports surfaced that Knowles was working on new music and preparing to hit the road with Jay-Z . Following a false alarm in which a tour announcement appeared and quickly disappeared from her Facebook page, the power couple officially announced that their On the Run II (or OTR II) Tour would kick off in Cardiff, Wales, on June 6.

One year after she canceled a planned appearance at Coachella because of her pregnancy, Knowles took the stage for an eagerly anticipated performance at the April 2018 music festival. The first Black woman to headline the event, Knowles wowed attendees and critics alike with her top-shelf singing and choreography, delivering favorites like “Crazy In Love” and a rendition of the civil rights anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” She was also joined during the two-hour set by hubby Jay-Z, sister Solange and her old Destiny’s Child cohorts, Rowland and Williams.

In June, Knowles and Jay-Z embarked on the European leg of their 48-date tour. While they lived up to expectations with their theatrics and swagger, the couple also surprised fans with the release of their joint album, Everything Is Love , following a London show on June 16. Initially available for streaming only on the Jay-Z-owned Tidal, the nine-track album was accompanied by a video for the track “Apesh–t,” which featured the couple and their dancers gallivanting around some of the world’s most famous artworks at the Louvre in Paris.

Homecoming , The Lion King , “Black Parade,” and Black is King

On April 17, 2019, Knowles released a documentary about her Coachella performance, Homecoming , and a surprise companion album which included 40 live tracks.

July brought the premiere of The Lion King , which featured Knowles as Nala, the childhood friend turned love interest of the titular character, played by Donald Glover . The singer also curated and produced a companion album for the production, titled The Lion King: The Gift , and released the single “Spirit” around the time of the film’s release.

In April 2020, Knowles surfaced on a remix of rapper Megan Thee Stallion ’s “Savage,” with proceeds going to coronavirus relief efforts in their shared hometown of Houston.

In June 2020, Knowles surprised fans by releasing the song “Black Parade,” in honor of Juneteenth. The song was nominated for four 2021 Grammy Awards and won for Best R&B song. Knowles also made history at the 2021 Grammys by breaking the record for the most wins ever by a female artist with 28 total wins during her career.

In July 2020, Knowles directed, wrote and executive produced the visual album Black is King , which “reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today’s young king and queens in search of their own crowns.”

Following years of pregnancy rumors, Knowles and Jay-Z went public with the news of their impending new arrival in 2011, the mom-to-be showing off her growing baby bump at the MTV Video Music Awards that August.

Knowles and Jay-Z welcomed a baby daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, on January 7, 2012. The couple spared no expense to maintain their privacy during this special time, renting out a floor of New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital.

In February 2017, Knowles announced on Instagram that she and Jay-Z were expecting twins. Later, the iconic shot was revealed to be the year’s most-liked Instagram post, with 11.1 million fans offering their approval.

They welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, in June 2017. Although the couple didn’t immediately confirm the twins’ birth or their names, People magazine reported that they had filed trademark documents at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the names Sir and Rumi. In the early morning hours of July 14, Knowles made it official, posting a photo in which she’s holding her one-month-old twins.

  • Whenever I’m out in public, I have to be put together. When I get home, I rebel against it, and I don’t want to take care of anything. I drop it. I’m relaxed. I don’t have any shoes on. No makeup.
  • I feel that, especially now, with the internet and paparazzi and camera phones, it’s so difficult to maintain mystery.
  • One of the reasons I connect to the Super Bowl is that I approach my shows like an athlete.
  • I think people have an idea in their heads about entertainers [and] celebrities. I think they feel like their lives are so perfect, and it’s really hard to go through painful experiences when you are in the public eye because it’s hard to have closure.
  • The best thing is looking back and realizing how good life is. If you don’t take the time to think about it, analyze it, you’ll never realize all the dots that are connected.
  • We’re all going through our problems, but we all have the same insecurities and we all have the same abilities, and we all need each other.
  • In my hardest moments, where I thought, “What am I doing? I’m not strong enough for this, I can’t get through this, I’m not ready.” I just have to say, “Jump!” because I know I’m gonna land in that water and swim back on the boat, and I’m going to jump again and land in the water and swim back to the boat. I have to trust myself.
  • My life is a journey. It seems like I set a goal and, some kind of way, I accomplish it, and then I set another one. And my goal was trusting myself, and my goal was growth.
  • Women have to work much harder to make it in this world. It really pisses me off that women don’t get the same opportunities as men do. Because, let’s face it, money gives men the power to run the show. It gives men the power to define our values and to define what’s sexy and what’s feminine and that’s bullsh–t. At the end of the day, it’s not about equal rights, it’s about how we think. We have to reshape our own perception of how we view ourselves.
  • I didn’t want to release my music the way I’ve done it. I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There’s so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn’t want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it’s ready and from me to my fans.
  • It’s difficult being a woman. It’s so much pressure, and we need that support sometimes.

How Beyoncé Has Used Her Concert Films to Tell Us Who She Really Is

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

A Film by Beyoncé has become the official title used to denote pivotal entries into an archive that Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has been building for decades. It first appeared with the release of Homecoming (2019), a documentary concert film that captured the musician’s historic headline performances at Coachella in 2018. This year, Parkwood Entertainment is following up the culture-shifting Netflix release with Renaissance: A Film by Beyonc é , which similarly enshrines the global tour she completed in support of her seventh studio album. “In this world that is very male-dominated, I’ve had to be really tough,” Beyoncé explains in the trailer for the documentary, which hits theaters Dec. 1. “To balance motherhood and being on the stage, it just reminds me of who I really am.” And these films are how she has told us who she is.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, beyoncé, zach bryan lead 2024 people's choice country awards nominations, why beyoncé's 'cowboy carter' should get album of the year at the grammys — and kendrick lamar should get song of the year , beyoncé lawsuit over 'break my soul' sample dropped.

In the time between those two versions of Beyoncé, she had become a mother to three children — including a set of twins born less than a year before she became the first Black woman to headline Coachella. “There were days where I thought I’d never be the same. I’d never be the same physically. My strength and endurance would never be the same,” she said in the film, which she directed alongside Burke. “A lot of the choreography is about feeling, so it’s not as technical. It’s your own personality that brings it to life. And that’s hard when you don’t feel like yourself.” Her devotion to the art of performance itself was no different. But her search for balance had become more urgent.

The most intimate footage in Beyoncé’s earlier documentaries was often captured this way — no massive camera crews following her around, just her vlogging on Macbooks and early-model iPhones. In Life Is But a Dream , she bolsters the maternal thread throughout these works with footage of her nephew, Solange’s son Julez, at the pool. She also talks about the strain that being self-managed put on her relationship with her father, Matthew Knowles. In I Am… World Tour , she considers taking a 25-hour flight from Romania just to spend 48 hours with Jay-Z and counting down the days until they’re reunited. And from as early as 2003’s The Making of Dangerously in Love, the ocean has frequently appeared in Beyoncé’s documentary releases as a place of peace and escape. In both Year of 4 (2011) and Life Is But a Dream , she embeds candid beach vacation footage. “I learn from her everyday. Mostly, it’s how to take certain things that we bring to the table and make it her own,” Burke told Out . “She elevates everything.”

Films like Homecoming and now Renaissance provide rare insight into the intense behind-the-scenes process of building the presentation of Beyoncé’s music on a large scale. It’s what happens in the months leading up to these culture-shifting career moments and the cultural context surrounding them. Before, her focus was largely on preserving the performances themselves. Features like Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 (2011) and The Beyoncé Experience Live (2007) were more straightforward records of her live shows. They included the occasional addition of home video footage from her childhood and early years with Destiny’s Child but also lingered on the faces of enthralled fans in the audience. And earlier releases, like Year of 4 and The Making of Dangerously in Love , were more hyper-focused on the creation of the records.

In a recent interview, Jay-Z recalled an agreement they made with their daughter before she could step onstage in front of tens of thousands of people. “If this is something you want to do, you can’t just go out there. You gotta go work with the dancers and go work,” he said they told her. “And she worked every day. I watched her work hard. She had a little icy pack thing on her back some days.” It’s one of the most anticipated moments expected to appear in the forthcoming documentary concert film.

“It was important to me that everyone that had never seen themselves represented felt like they were on that stage with us, killing ‘em,” Beyoncé said in Homecoming . “I used to feel like the world wanted me to stay in my little box. And Black women often feel underestimated. I wanted us to be proud of not only the show but the process. Proud of the struggle.” There, she told this story through the often understated cultural significance of HBCU performers. On the Renaissance tour, her messaging was amplified through the Black queer culture that provided an ironclad foundation for her three-hour performance, as well as the dozens of game-changing women — from Diana Ross and Grace Jones to Janet Jackson and Rihanna — who had their names flashed across the screen during “Break My Soul.”

But this is far from the pop star's first foray into the world of documentaries. Since the beginning of her solo career, Beyoncé has often opted out of doing interviews and press , choosing instead to let fans inside both her creative process and her personal life through in-depth films that show the woman behind the artist.

In many of those documentaries—like 2013's Life is But a Dream , which aired on HBO— Beyoncé even included footage from a video diary that she keeps and records on her laptop, including early shots of her pregnant with her daughter, Blue Ivy , messages she's sent to her husband, rapper Jay-Z , and her real-time reactions while hearing news headlines about herself play on the television.

Homecoming is one of Queen Bey's most compelling projects yet, but in case you may have missed them, here's a look at the other 7 Beyoncé documentaries and concert specials the singer has already released. Fingers crossed we might eventually get one about her and Jay-Z's "On The Run II" tour.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Beyonce Knowles' father is Matthew Knowles who worked as a Xerox sales manager when she was born. Her mother is Tina Knowles, a hairdresser and salon owner. With encouragement from her parents, Beyonce began performing by the age of seven and was soon winning local dancing and singing competitions. With her childhood friend Kelly Rowland , she met LaTavia Roberson when auditioning for an all-girl entertainment group. They were placed into a group called Girl's Tyme with three other girls in 1990.

Girl's Tyme landed a spot on the Star Search TV talent show, but they failed to win. In 1995, Matthew Knowles resigned his position with Xerox to manage Girl's Tyme. He cut the group down to four members. In 1996 they began recording their debut album for Columbia Records and changed their name to Destiny's Child, based on a passage from the Bible's "Book of Isaiah. "

Destiny's Child

In 1997, the song "Killing Time," the first major label recording by Destiny's Child, appeared on the soundtrack for Men In Black . By the end of 1998 the group had reached the top of the R&B chart and #3 on the pop chart with the single "No, No, No, Pt. 2." Destiny's Child became one of the top-selling recording acts of the late 1990s and early 2000s with over ten top 10 pop hit singles. The group officially announced their breakup in 2005.

Solo Success

In 2002, Beyonce was the featured vocalist on the single "'03 Bonnie and Clyde" by Jay-Z . Then, with Destiny's Child officially on hiatus, she released a solo album Dangerously in Love . Propelled by its first single, the #1 smash "Crazy in Love," the album hit #1 in the U.S. and U.K. eventually selling over four million copies in the U.S. and eight million worldwide. Three more top 10 pop singles from the album followed in quick succession.

Beyonce released her second studio album B'Day  on her 25th birthday on September 4, 2006. She recorded the entire album in just two weeks. It sold over 500,000 copies in its first week of release and debuted at #1 on the album chart. The lead single "Deja Vu," a collaboration with Jay-Z in the manner of "Crazy In Love" from her first album, was a top 5 pop smash. The third single "Irreplaceable" hit #1 and earned a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

Beyonce's third studio album, 2008's  I Am...Sasha Fierce encompassed two discs of music. Each was designed to show a different facet of Beyonce's work. The first disc I Am is mostly slow and midtempo ballads while the second Sasha Fierce , named after an in-concert alter ego, includes more uptempo tracks and influences from electronic pop music. The album debuted at #1 on the album chart selling nearly 500,000 copies in its first week making it Beyonce's third consecutive #1. I Am...Sasha Fierce earned seven Grammy Award nominations and won six of them.

Two of the standout tracks on the album are "If I Were a Boy," a gender reversal song that spells out the inequality of male-female relationships, and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)." The latter is accompanied by a music video that became an instant classic. Beyonce's performance with her dancers has been repeated and parodied by admirers around the world.

Mature Artist

Beyonce's highly anticipated fourth studio album was titled simply 4 . She steered away from mainstream commercial concerns and recorded music heavily influenced by traditional R&B. Part of her inspiration in recording the album was disappointment with contemporary radio. Critics praised her commitment to the traditional style of music. The song "Love On Top" earned a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Despite the critical acclaim, 4 lagged commercially compared with Beyonce's first three albums. Released in 2011, it sold just over 300,000 copies in its first week and debuted at #1, making Beyonce only the second woman, after Britney Spears , to have her first four albums debut at the top, but it lacked significant hit singles to keep the sales up. "Best Thing I Never Had" was the most successful single peaking at #16.

Beyonce shocked the music world on December 13, 2013, by releasing her self-titled fifth studio album without out advance notice or promotion. It debuted at #1 on the album chart selling over 600,000 copies in its first week, the best first-week sales of Beyonce's career. She earned praise for her expression of full artistic freedom on the album and taking a deeper dive into her concerns about female empowerment.

With 17 short films created to illustrate the 14 audio tracks, Beyonce became a visual as well as audio album breaking new ground for pop artists. Two singles received promotion along with the initial release of the album. "XO" was promoted primarily to pop audiences while "Drunk In Love" was aimed at R&B audiences. The latter became the hit fast eclipsing the former and peaked at #2. It was Beyonce's highest charting single in five years. The album earned five Grammy Award nominations including for Album of the Year.

Beyonce's sixth studio album Lemonade was released as a second visual album in April 2016 and is also considered a concept album. It was promoted with a one hour film on HBO. The album is influenced by a wide range of musical styles and includes guest vocals from James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and Jack White . Lemonade became Beyonce's sixth consecutive album to debut at #1 selling 485,000 copies in its first week.

The song "Formation" was released as the lead single from the Lemonade project two months before the album. The next day Beyonce performed it live at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. She received some criticism for what was considered a militant statement about the treatment of Black people. "Formation" reached the top 10 on the pop singles chart. When Adele won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, she said that Lemonade was monumental and more deserving of the award.

Acting Career

Beyonce's first major acting appearance was in a starring role in the 2001 TV movie  Carmen: A Hip Hopera , an update of the opera  Carmen . In 2002 she appeared with Mike Myers as Foxxy Cleopatra in  Austin Powers in Goldmember . A third film appearance was released in 2003. Beyonce starred opposite Cuba Gooding, Jr. in  The Fighting Temptations .

Beyonce's most significant acting success came in the 2006 film  Dreamgirls  which earned multiple Academy Awards. She also starred as Etta James in  Cadillac Records  in 2008. Critics highly praised her performance. In 2010, she added her vocal and acting talents to Lady Gaga's "Telephone" and the accompanying epic music video.

Personal Life

Beyonce and rapper Jay-Z began a romantic relationship following their collaboration on "'03 Bonnie and Clyde" in 2002. She appeared as his girlfriend in the music video. They married on April 4, 2008. They revealed details on the event at the October 2008 listening party for Beyonce's album I Am...Sasha Fierce.

Beyonce suffered a miscarriage in either 2010 or 2011. She described it as, "the saddest thing." She became pregnant again in April 2011 while in Paris, France shooting the cover for the album 4. She revealed her pregnancy to the public in August 2011 t the MTV Video Music Awards. Beyonce gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter, a daughter, on January 7, 2012.

In February 2017, Beyonce announced that she was pregnant with twins. Rumi Carter, a second daughter, and Sir Carter, a son, were born on June 13, 2017.

Beyonce Knowles is recognized widely as an essential 21st-century pop music performer. Her music is consistently challenging and pushing boundaries. She has incorporated influences from blues through new wave and electropop. She consistently supports female empowerment. Her use of an all-female band while touring broke crucial ground for women in music.

Beyonce embraces her African-American heritage and presents herself as a positive role model for her community. Despite criticisms from the conservative end of the political spectrum, she directly addressed issues of violence against members of the Black community and adopted imagery from militant activists of the 1960s.

Widely recognized for her talent by her peers, Beyonce has won 22 Grammy Awards placing her second among women behind only country-bluegrass legend Alison Krauss . Beyonce's 62 nominations are the most ever received by a woman. Her 24 MTV Video Music Awards makes her the most awarded artist in the event's history.

Beyoncé is moving on to a new era in her music. If you haven’t listened to the singer’s new album , Cowboy Carter, yet — seriously, what are you doing reading this? Just a few months after her concert film/documentary, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, broke box office records, the Queen Bey announced that we were “ready” for her new music during a Super Bowl ad , officially ushering in Act II, AKA Cowboy Carter , AKA the sequel to Renaissance . Now that we’re in a brand new, distinctly Country era , fans may be wondering when the singer’s smash hit documentary capturing the making of Renaissance will be available to stream at home. Unfortunately, there’s no official word on when (or even if) Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé will be hitting HBO’s Max or Netflix or another popular streaming platform yet.

But when it comes to documentaries and concert films, Renaissance   was in no way Beyoncé’s first rodeo. The musical icon has put out many projects offering her audience a glimpse of what goes into the making of her albums and world tours, as well as unforgettable visual albums and concert performances. Beyoncé : I said I'm going to take a risk and I'm going to bring R&B music back and I'm going to add bridges to songs and chord changes. I'm going to sing about love and do the opposite of what I thought I was going to do. I'm not going to try to be cool, forget being cool, I'm going to be honest, I'm going to be sad, I'm going to be passionate, I'm going to be vulnerable, I'm going to sing from my heart.

The People’s Choice Country Awards, first held in 2023, will return for a second edition on NBC in September, with a list of nominees announced Thursday that includes some of the biggest names crossing over between country and the pop mainstream, including Beyoncé , Shaboozey , Zach Bryan , Kacey Musgraves, Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll.

Bungie layoffs highlight post-m&a issues for gaming industry as its unions react, 'snow white' live-action trailer: rachel zegler faces off against gal gadot's evil queen and meets the seven dwarfs, popular on variety.

Shaboozey, the newcomer whose “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has dominated the Billboard Hot 100 in the last couple of months, has 12 nominations. Shaboozey did make a huge impact at country radio, with his song reaching No. 1 in airplay, unlike Beyoncé, who had a modest success at the format, and Bryan and Musgraves, who didn’t much factor in at radio with their latest releases at all.

Nominated for the top award, the People’s Artist of 2024, are Beyoncé, Jelly Roll, Kacey Musgraves, Kane Brown, Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen and Zach Bryan.

But for artists who didn’t make it into that category, there are also separate divisions for top male and female artist as well as duo/group artist, as the People’s Choice Country Awards are big on gender-segregated categories as well as divisions in which all genders compete.

For this second year, the list of categories was expanded from 12 to 18, adding Male Song, Female Song, Group/Duo Song, Cover Song, New Artist Song and Storyteller Song.

The People’s Choice Country Awards entered a crowded field of country awards shows last year with an inaugural edition that was hosted by Little Big Town. It is NBC’s footprint in the field, while ABC has the CMA Awards in November and CBS began airing the CMT Awards last year, even as the ACM Awards, formerly on CBS, became an Amazon Prime exclusive.

The CMA Awards will be next up on the country calendar, with a date yet to be set for November.

Beyonce’s midas touch is alive and well.

In an unusual turn of events, Beyoncé has nabbed a Song of the Year nomination at the Video Music Awards for “Texas Hold ‘Em” without releasing a single music video in the past few years. This unexpected nomination highlights the enduring influence and prowess of Queen Bey in the music industry.

The Evolution of Beyoncé’s Visual Artistry

Beyoncé has come a long way from her earlier career days. One thing that hasn’t changed is her ability to put out visually compelling works of art curated to leave a lasting impression. Her reputation is secure not just as an artist but as a musical heirloom.

Early Beginnings with Destiny’s Child

Queen Bey first made her music video debut with the iconic 1997 music video to Destiny’s Child’s “No, No, No,” a body of work that was well-received and followed up by her debut as the lead in the musical Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001). However, it would be her first music video as a solo artist for “Crazy in Love” featuring Jay-Z that would set her up as a trailblazer who had mastered the art of music video storytelling.

To date, the “Halo” singer has grossed over $2.5 billion worldwide at the box office, and her music videos are so compelling that each time she releases music that her fans hold out hope —and speculation—for the visuals. This ritual has become a part of the Bee Hive matriarch’s music rollout.

Traditionally, VMA nominations have been heavily influenced by visually stunning and creatively ambitious music videos, rewarding artists who pour their time, effort, and resources into these masterpieces. Ironically, every other artist nominated in the same category had an official music video for the nominated song, except Beyoncé. Her legacy, similar to Michael Jackson’s, has left a lasting impression on fans and critics, positioning her perfectly for the VMA nod. It's not just her music videos that have earned her a reputation as a great artist; her live performances have also taken on a life of their own, establishing her as one of the greatest visual storytellers of her time. She set this precedent with the self-titled album Beyoncé , and since then, she hasn’t stopped.

Below are three takeaways we can learn from Beyoncé’s nomination:

1. A Solid Reputation Can Influence Future Opportunities

Beyoncé’s ability to earn a VMA nomination without a new music video is a product of her far-reaching reputation as a curator of excellence. Over the years, she has built a brand synonymous with careful thought, creativity and authenticity. A documentary like Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé was a perfect highlight to fans of the number of hours she pours into perfecting her craft. Her meticulous attention to detail ensures that her work is always eagerly anticipated and recognized, even when it diverges from traditional paths. This shows the importance of creating a strong personal brand and consistently delivering high-quality work, which leads to opportunities and recognition that might not be immediately obvious or conventional.

2. Innovation and Adaptability Are Keys to Longevity

Beyoncé has been on the music scene for over three decades. Even though Jay-Z declared in 2003 that he had the “hottest chick in the game wearing his chain” in reference to Beyoncé, that statement still rings true today.

Although the music industry is rapidly evolving, with new technologies and techniques changing how artists connect with their fans, Beyoncé has remained a relevant part of the pop culture conversation and has earned the respect and admiration of her fans. For career success and longevity, embracing innovation and pivoting new opportunities can lead to longevity.

3. Authentic Engagement Is Better Than Traditional Metrics

In today’s interconnected world, people crave authenticity. Beyoncé’s live performance nomination highlights the power of genuine engagement. Traditional metrics like album sales and music video views are no longer the sole indicators of success. Instead, connecting with audiences through live performances and well-thought-out visual translations of music are the way forward. The fact that Beyoncé still scored a nomination speaks volumes about her star power and the trust her fans have in her art and brand consistency. For professionals, this demonstrates the value of engaging authentically with their audience or customer base, building a foundation of trust and respect, which can translate to recognition and success, sometimes beyond the status quo.
