திரை விமர்சனம்: அதோமுகம்

aftermath movie review in tamil

Now streaming on:

" Aftermath ," a new revenge drama starring Arnold Schwarzenegger , is considerably more contemplative and downbeat than the Austrian leading man's fans might expect. Unfortunately, the film's commendably atypical focus on characters, mood, and psychological realism does not make Schwarzenegger's latest necessarily good. We spend much of the film waiting for something to happen after two strangers—a construction foreman (Schwarzenegger) and an air traffic controller ( Scoot McNairy )—have their lives implicitly bound together by the collision of two commercial airliners. "Aftermath" should be refreshing for its atypically slow build-up to these two characters' climactic meeting. But more often than not, it feels lifeless and angsty, mostly because it never has anything substantial to say about the grieving process beyond immersing viewers in trite representations of post-traumatic stress. The film's short-comings are especially upsetting since Schwarzenegger is actually rather good in the film, and proves once again that, despite a severely limited range, he knows how to brood.

Schwarzenegger plays Roman, a man who works with his hands, but is woefully unable to do anything after a plane crash—perpetuated by a combination of equipment failure and negligence by well-meaning family man Jake (McNairy)—kills his wife, his daughter, and his daughter's unborn child. Roman is devastated. He stays in his house, sees nobody, visits his family's grave, and generally stares off into the mid-distance. Roman has emotionally checked out, and that gives Schwarzenegger a lot of room to be moody and exhausted, his two main emotional registers during recent performances. He doesn't know Jake, but he's shown to suffer just as much as him. Jake, post-accident, cannot concentrate. He tries to show love to his wife and son, but that proves futile. He doesn't sleep well, is obsessed with the news, and is hounded by the press.

We spend much of "Aftermath" waiting for these two characters to catch up with each other, which should give you an indication of the emotional pressure that builds throughout this film. Yes, "Aftermath" is inevitably about revenge, but it's also about the emotional stakes that lead characters to want to avenge their loved ones. Still, this movie does not make narrative sense beyond a point since it's essentially a series of scenes that show how consumed by grief these two characters are. That's not always a bad thing. Schwarzenegger carries many of his scenes, like the one where Roman, facing a panel of unfeeling bureaucrats, demands that somebody apologize for the death of his family. The scene in general may be hackneyed—who really needs to see another angry man face an uncaring world ruled by ass-covering company men—but it does have a kernel of raw emotion thanks to Schwarzenegger.

The scenes that revolve around Jake and his wife Christina ( Maggie Grace ) are similarly rote, but intense. You really get the sense that these characters are going through hell when she tries to break through his self-pity and convince him that a temporary separation might eventually lead to the salvaging of their marriage. Grace comes off as a real person in that sense, even if the scenes themselves do inevitably gravitate around McNairy's hang-dog expression, and his pitiful inability to do anything but pout and parrot his wife's suggestion that they spend some time apart for their son's sake.

Still, there are way too many scenes where Jake and Roman unproductively sulk and revel in shell-shock. The film's cast do the hard work of making you believe these characters exist, but director Elliott Lester ("Blitz," "Nightingale") and screenwriter Javier Gullon rarely give them anything worth saying. Gullon skillfully avoids some major clichés, and genuinely gives you the impression that he's interested in his characters' inner lives. But what does it say about "Aftermath" that Roman's inner turmoil is expressed through generic recurring nightmares about his wife and daughter's airplane breaking apart before his eyes? And why does the movie dwell so much on Jake's marriage, to the point where it inadvertently confirms his latent fear that he is nothing without his family? "Aftermath" is consistently too neat to be thoughtful.

Still, I don't want to dismiss this film too hastily since it does give viewers a rare opportunity to watch Schwarzenegger, one of the last great action stars, prove he's more than just his muscles. Schwarzenegger is, in a couple of scenes, filmed with his clothes off, as if to remove the mystique of his bulky frame. He'll never be average, but he looks less imposing with his chin stuck to his enormous chest, and his eyes on his feet. The man still radiates menace when he needs to, but he never had to work so hard to do it.

Gone are the days of one-liners and gory deaths. Today's Schwarzenegger is a man of inaction. This new look kind of suits Schwarzenegger, an actor whose limited range has often made him the target of unfair criticism. Now, the man doesn't have to just provide a presence (though that's realistically more than most stars, regardless of genre, are able to do). Here, his essence is boiled down to a deferred look, a hard stare, or a slumped pose. Or, put another way: his body talks without overstating the obvious. I just wish it had something more to say.

Our Mothers.

Our Mothers review – moving drama about aftermath of unspeakable war violence

Cezar Diaz’s sensitive and humane film looks back at one of the bloodiest periods of the Guatemalan civil war from the perspective of one damaged family

H ere is a thoughtful, restrained drama about one of the bloodiest periods during the long civil war in Guatemala , fought between US-backed rightwing generals and leftwing insurgents. In the 1980s, thousands of men, women and children were killed, mostly by soldiers. Our Mothers starts as a straightforward drama about families, decades later, still looking for relatives who disappeared in the massacres. But what emerges is a sensitive and moving portrait of female survivors – the clue is in the title.

In 2018, Ernesto (Armando Espitia) is a hard-working young government forensic investigator. Director Cesar Diaz follows Ernesto with a low-key documentary-like style as the young man goes about his job locating mass graves and exhuming bodies. One day, an indigenous woman, Nicolasa (Aurelia Caal), walks into his office with a familiar story: more than 30 years ago, soldiers tortured and killed the men in her farming village, then raped the women. Diaz handles the accounts of sexual violence with tremendous sensitivity, giving no more information than needed.

Nicolasa has a photograph of her husband posing with guerrillas who had visited their village shortly before the army raided. Ernesto thinks one of the men in the photo might be his father, a guerrilla who disappeared around this time. At home, his mother Cristina (Emma Dib), a paediatrician, clams up. The past is in the past; she doesn’t want to know. At her birthday party, old comrades and intellectuals sing leftist anthems. One friend is about to testify at the trial of a former soldier accused of rape, but Cristina has apparently refused to give evidence.

Between 1960 and 1996, more than 100,000 Guatemalan women were victims of rape. A more traditional “issue” drama would force a big confrontation between mother and son, but here it plays out in a lower key, in a humane film that feels deeply respectful towards the real-life survivors.

The Ending Of Aftermath Explained

Natalie Dadich looks pensive Aftermath

The brutal horror movie "Aftermath" is taking over Netflix and currently sits on the streaming platform's trending list. The creepy horror film is purportedly based on a true story  and follows a young married couple named Natalie (Ashley Greene) and Kevin Dadich (Shawn Ashmore) who are facing marital issues after the former's affair. Things start to look up for the couple when they move into a beautiful house, though it does come with a caveat: the previous owners died in the home in a gruesome murder-suicide.

Almost immediately after moving in, strange occurrences start taking place in the Dadich family's new home, including odd noises and doors opening by themselves. The weird events get more sinister until they finally culminate in a huge reveal at the end of the film, giving us an answer as to who — or what — is behind all of the mysterious goings-on.

Here's the ending of "Aftermath" explained.

The answer was within the house all along

Throughout "Aftermath," Natalie and Kevin are tormented in a variety of ways. Though they start out mildly, the events quickly get more and more horrific: their dog Odi is poisoned and has to be put down, illicit magazines are sent to their home in Kevin's name, and Natalie is even attacked at home when Kevin is away one night. Though we learn that some of the unsettling stunts were committed by a disgruntled family member of the deceased original inhabitants of the home, a twist in the story reveals the true culprit is even more creepy.

As it turns out, the original couple who lived in the home — Erin and Jay — were not killed in a murder-suicide. They were, in fact, killed by Erin's secret lover named Otto (Jason Liles), who'd been living within the home the whole time. Since Erin designed the home herself, she included a secret space that allowed her to sneak Otto in and out.

Unfortunately for Erin, when she ultimately chose her husband Jay over her lover, Otto lost control and killed the couple, then continued to live in his secret hideaway and enact his revenge on the new inhabitants of the house.

Is the nightmare truly over?

In the last moments of the film, Otto has Natalie chained up in his hidden room and she learns the truth about his existence as well as the murders. Suddenly, Kevin returns home, and Otto attacks him as well — though Natalie is able to break free, and together, she and Kevin kill Otto. Or do they?

The final scene shows Natalie and Kevin one month later as they finish moving the final things out of their home with the help of their friends. They say their sassy goodbyes to the house and head out the door jovially; this suggests that the movie will end on a happy note. However, the camera keeps panning over to the closet door that they'd left open — only it starts to close on its own, signifying perhaps the terrifying events aren't quite over after all.

Whether Otto ended up surviving or some other horrifying person moved into the vacant house, the ending of "Aftermath" is sure to send shivers down your spine.

Aftermath – Netflix Review (3/5)

Posted by Karina "ScreamQueen" Adelgaard | Aug 4, 2021 | 4 minutes

Aftermath – Netflix Review (3/5)

AFTERMATH on Netflix is a horror mystery that works surprisingly well. From the mystery of the plot to the moments of brutal horror. It’s a bit too long, but the dialogue is realistic and the story works well. Read our full Aftermath movie review here!

AFTERMATH is a new Netflix horror mystery starring Shawn Ashmore and Ashley Green. I didn’t know what to expect, but from the beginning, the dialogue made the whole story come together. You don’t often notice dialogue unless it’s very bad or really good. In this case, it’s surprisingly good because it feels real and natural.

BASED ON TRUE STORIES Yes,  Aftermath  is actually based on a true story and you can read up on this here *spoilers* >>>

The basic mystery of the haunted house story works well, despite this only being part of the plot of this movie. Also, I never expected that the horror elements of this movie would work so damn well.

Continue reading our  Aftermath movie review below and check it out on Netflix.

Many elements come together nicely

The core element of Aftermath is the married couple played by Shawn Ashmore ( Devil’s Gate ) and Ashley Greene (the Twilight movies). However, the house where a murder-suicide took place also plays a key role. And yet, this isn’t the only element either, but everything works well and comes together very nicely.

Just one element is the fact that the husband (Shawn Ashmore) works cleaning up crime scenes. This results in some nasty scenes featuring various “creative” crime scenes along the way. And then there are the very  creepy moments in the house, which work extremely well in their simplicity.

Sure, you may guess elements of this horror mystery about halfway through, but it doesn’t really take anything away from this film. Basically, it just means that you’ve watched a lot of movies and know what might happen in these kinds of horror mysteries.

Aftermath (2021) Netflix Review

The ending of  Aftermath  on Netflix *minor spoilers*

It’s very possible that you’ll guess the ending of Aftermath . Or perhaps just elements of the Aftermath ending. This Netflix movie has several plot twists along the way and there are hints throughout the movie. Just when you think you’ve guessed one thing, another element becomes the key focus.

If you’ve watched movies about hauntings, home invasions, and various “mind games” related plots, then you’ll probably catch on quicker. Even if you guessed one or two of these plot twists, then more are to come. And the final one is definitely the big one!

IS AFTERMATH BASED ON A TRUE STORY? Yes, and we’ve written a spoiler-filled piece on the true stories behind this Netflix movie here >

Also, for anyone who doesn’t feel that the ending of this movie is realistic; You need to look up real stories and true crimes in this area. It is more common than you might think! I loved the ending, but of course, we’ve also covered several movies that feature similar plots ( click here to be taken to the tag for those movies ).

Watch  Aftermath  on Netflix now!

Peter Winther is the director of  Aftermath which he also came up with the story for. This isn’t the first feature film from Peter Winther, but his previous movies have a rather low IMDb rating (under 5). However, he has been a producer on some major movies over the past decades. From The Patriot  (2000) to the vampire movie  Bit  (2019) .

Also, Lars. P. Winther is a producer on this movie and he has worked on some of the biggest movies in recent years. Including the new  The Suicide Squad (2021), The Hunt  (2020) , and  many movies in the Avengers universe. Either as First Assistant Director or Producer. Or both! And yes, Lars and Peter Winther are brothers, in case you were wondering.

YOU MIGHT LIKE Our review of the crazy action thriller The Hunt  here >

The screenplay was written by Dakota Gorman so she’s responsible for the great dialogue in this movie. This is only the second feature film written by Dakota Gorman after her own writer-director debut in 2020 with Natural Disasters . I should mention that it switches it up whenever this movie looks like it’s going down a stereotypical path. I loved that!

At just under two hours, the runtime is a bit long. However, it’s a solid movie in terms of story, acting, and overall entertainment.

Aftermath  is out on Netflix in most countries from August 4, 2021.

Director: Peter Winther Writers: Dakota Gorman, Peter Winther Stars: Ashley Greene, Shawn Ashmore, Britt Baron, Diana Hopper, Sharif Atkins, Alexander Bedria, Jamie Kaler, Travis Coles, Jason Liles, Ross McCall, Susan Walters

Desperate to save their marriage, a young couple takes a deal and moves into their dream home, but disturbing events reveal the house’s troubled history.

I write reviews and recaps on Heaven of Horror. And yes, it does happen that I find myself screaming, when watching a good horror movie. I love psychological horror, survival horror and kick-ass women. Also, I have a huge soft spot for a good horror-comedy. Oh yeah, and I absolutely HATE when animals are harmed in movies, so I will immediately think less of any movie, where animals are harmed for entertainment (even if the animals are just really good actors). Fortunately, horror doesn't use this nearly as much as comedy. And people assume horror lovers are the messed up ones. Go figure!

The result is a listlessly soapy melodrama, save for a little bit of modern-day nudity and bloodshed, could have been churned out 60-70 years ago and then gone largely forgotten in the ensuing decades. Aftermath. " Aftermath ," a new revenge drama starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is considerably more contemplative and downbeat than the Austrian leading man's fans might expect.
